RAMADAN AND PUBLIC EXAMS

MEETING 16:00 on 3rd May, 2017 (School

Library)

As you will be aware, two extremely

important parts of the calendar are upon

us, Ramadan (which begins on 26 May, just

before half-term) and public examinations.

Ramadan falls within the examination

season in 2017 and will do so for the next

coincide with the summer weather. The

combination of long days and

examinations will put extra pressure on

young Muslims however they decide to

Y unus year 9 in his own words on his fantastic career so

far in youth football for Arsenal and England.

'I got called up for England u15s team in August 2016 to

go to the first selection camp.

After that competition there was another camp at St.

George's Park with some outstanding players, luckily, I got

picked out of 40 players to play a match against Turkey.

There were 24 of us in the squad and we won the game 5-

2. It was our first international match together and the

coach was extremely pleased with the team cohesion of

the group. Personally, I played one of my best games, an

unforgettable experience.

Not long after, in February, I got another call up to play

against a tough Belgium side. We had four days to

prepare, discuss ideas and train prior to the match. The

day before the game I got named captain by the coach

in front of all of the other players. I was lost for words and

felt an incredibly happy to be captain of England. We

didn't play well first half and Belgium went 4-1 up, second

half we showed more fight and desire but it wasn't

enough, and lost the game 4-3 with our heads held high.

This season has been great so far as I've played every

game with the u15s and two games with the u16s. I hope I

finish the season on a high and I can't wait to play in the

next tournament in Italy.

I am very humble and know that I am fortunate to

currently be in the position I am, I work extremely hard

and practice to be the best that I can be. My family and

school have supported me throughout my achievements

in football.' YEA

I am therefore organising a meeting with parents

about how we can best support students with

exams during Ramadan in addition to the many

other adjustments we make for all students during

Ramadan. I will not be giving any instructions as

how students observe Ramadan as this is a personal

decision for the individual, however I will be

providing advice.

FOND FAREWELLS

At the end of term we say goodbye to Miss Bedia,

Mr Joynes, Mrs Lee, Miss Pearson, Mrs Trayler and Ms

Walford and we wish them every happiness in the

future.

We would like to thank them for all they have

contributed to the success of Eastbury over the

years.

EASTER HOLIDAY

Please note this holiday is later this year and we

break up at 15:05 on Friday 7th April (Holiday

Monday 10th April – Friday 21st April).

May I take this opportunity in wishing all staff,

families and students a very happy and restful

holiday. I know that the vast majority of students in

years 11, 12 and 13 will be using some of the holiday

for revision and attending the additional sessions we

are putting on in school; however they must ensure

they have some rest periods during the holidays.

I look forward to seeing all students smartly dressed

in their uniforms (the summer uniform may be worn)

at 08:30 on Monday 24th April.

S tudents discovered how teamwork could help in and

out of the classroom, with many new friendships being

made.

This term, the maths department have taken 100 year 11

students on a weekend maths residential in preparation for

their GCSE exams. The residential took place over three

different weekends, with each one catering for students

and their specific target grades.

As well as revision for their exams, the students had the

opportunity to take part in activities that they had not

encountered before; such as aerial trekking, mountain

biking and archery. The students were fantastic on each

weekend, their enthusiasm and hard work resulted in a

successful residential which stimulated them mentally and

physically.
