Welcome to the new edition of The Edge — which we hope provides a substantialcurtain raiser for the PLASA Show in London, the much-anticipated launch of theAQ Series (see opposite) and the onset of the Autumn season.

The last two quarters have seen Martin Audio consolidate the success of the newMini Line Array (W8LM) — first shown at last year’s London Show; with itsrelease, it is gratifying to see the former Eastern Bloc countries moving towardsMartin Audio Line Array technology in their droves.

Included in this is the Synco Network, and on the subject of that partnership, weshould congratulate the management team of UK-based RG Jones for successfullyimplementing their own company buyout. Having been through a similarexperience ourselves, we know what it is involved — and we wish the newadministration well.

The company has certainly enjoyed a busy summer season with our products —and the use of just two W8LM enclosures ground-stacked on either side of thePhilips big screen on what has become known as ‘Henman Hill’ at the WimbledonLawn Tennis Championships, underlines the breadth of application which theseeasy-to-rig enclosures are now being put towards. RG Jones admit that to theirsurprise this solution proved more than adequate for the masses who assembled.

We should also congratulate our friend Dave Parry of Most Technical (the technicalwizard behind London’s leading club fabric) for successfully exporting Westernexpertise into New Delhi. When he first experienced the Martin Audio sound atfabric Elevate club owner Monty Chadha’s dream had been to replicate this levelof club dynamic in India — and with Dave Parry as the guiding hand, this has beenachieved.

Finally, with this edition, The Edge has welcomed contributions from territorieswhich we are hearing from for the first time. It is a true measure of Martin Audio’sgrowing global authority — and a nice challenge for the editor when the biggestdilemma now faced is not how to source the material, but what to leave out.

AQ’s Ultra Compact New Age IntegrationIn true Martin Audio fashion, the new AQ Series loudspeakersare designed to be acoustically correct, stylish, powerful,efficient, easy to drive and a breeze to install – a dead cert forany installation.

The new AQ Series is an integrated ultra-compact package,designed to fulfil the need for high performance installed soundin pubs, bars, restaurants, retail outlets, conference facilities,post production suites, theatres, educational institutions, placesof worship, museums and exhibition centres.

Styled to be architecturally unobtrusive, six full rangeenclosures make up the range, from the ultra-compact dual 5"(130mm) ICT™ AQ5 to the very high power AQ15 with its400W AES (1600W peak) 15" (380mm) direct radiator and highefficiency HF compression driver.

The AQ5 and AQ6 are thick-walled structural ABS foamenclosures with the remaining models constructed in heavilybraced MDF, with flush mounting, tough, acousticallytransparent steel grilles. All models are finished in RAL7030grey, as standard but other RAL colours are available to order.

AQ Series loudspeakers are equipped with high-current, lowprofile input and link connectors, supplied with easy-to-fitmating plugs for ease of installation. Specially designed wall,ceiling and barrel clamp brackets are available for AQ5 – AQ12to cater for construction industry standard 1st and 2nd fixinstallation methods. This allows installers to pull cables andprefix wall or ceiling mounts during building constructionwithout having to bring the loudspeakers to site until the moresecure pre-opening phase of a project.

The horn-loaded AQ Series loudspeakers feature generouslysized mid/high frequency horns and high order crossovers forsuperior pattern control down into the low midrange andsmooth off-axis characteristics. Passive crossovers feature air-cored inductors and high quality capacitors for exceptionalprecision and low distortion.

AQ Series low frequency sections feature efficient, widebandwidth, high excursion drivers with generouslyproportioned voice coils for high power handling. The smallerAQ Series loudspeakers feature acoustically rigid industrialfoam enclosures whilst the larger enclosures in the series arewell damped for accurate, non-resonant operation.

The six full range AQ Series loudspeakers are complementedby four dedicated, high power sub-bass enclosures, rangingfrom the ultra-compact, 400W AES (1600W peak) single 12"(300mm) AQ112 to the very high power, 1000W AES (4000Wpeak) dual 15" (380mm) AQ215.

A high performance AQX controller has been speciallydesigned to manage AQ Series loudspeakers. The controller ishoused in a single rack unit and provides user-selectable activecrossover, limiter and trim functions for all AQ systemcombinations.

The New Barcelona ForumBarcelona’s latest archi-tectural statement is theiconic new 180-metreequilateral triangle known asthe Forum. Built for 141 daysof summer concerts andcultural conventions, it wasdesigned by the brilliantSwiss architects, JacquesHerzog and Pierre deMeuron (who were alsoresponsible for London’s Tate Modern).

Situated on a 30-hectarecoastal site, north east ofBarceloneta and PortOlympic (at the Diagonal

Mar), it has been in theplanning since the mid-1990’swhen former Socialist Mayor,Pasqual Maragall, put forwardthe idea. But in May this yearit became a reality.

The ‘Universal Forum ofCultures’ (to give it its fullname) is co-organised by theBarcelona City Council, theCatalan AutonomousGovernment and the SpanishGovernment, with UNESCOas its main partner. Threemain themes define theForum: Cultural diversity,

sustainable development andconditions for peace,covering a wide range ofuniversal geopolitical issues.

The Forum building itselfrests on 17 pillars, its wallsbuilt from coral-like blueconcrete, while water flowsfrom the giant reservoir onthe roof to keep it cool insummer. Forged into thedepths is a 3,200-seatauditorium (above which is avast triangular exhibitionspace). Across the ForumPlaza is an internationalconvention centre (which is

also used for visitorattractions).

Both these venues are heavilyequipped with Martin Audioloudspeakers, processedwith XTA digitalmanagement systems —supplied by the companies’joint Spanish distributor,AdagioPro.

The design of the auditoriumis particularly impressive —its two tiers looking up to thescaly, reflective blue roof atground level, which was toplay havoc with the acoustics.

AdagioPro liaised with soundcontractors AGE Control(under project managerMiguel Guindulain); theacoustic consultant was theeminent Dr. Higini Arau andthe sound system design wasmasterminded by MartinAudio’s senior projectengineer Jim Cousins, incollaboration withAdagioPro. The signals arerouted via a CobraNet digitalnetwork designed byconsultants, AudioScan(working on behalf of the owners).

Cousins used the MartinAudio Line Array’sViewPoint™ predictivesoftware to calculate theoptimum positions for thetwo 11-enclosure hangs toprovide even coverage.

Cancellation of the acousticreverberations provedproblematic, but the 7.5° tiltbetween boxes three andfour weakened the coveragesufficiently to avoid audiblereflections from the balconyedge and rear glass walls,while continuing the line to

ensure lobe-free verticalperformance and minimalceiling excitation.

Eight WTUB underbalconyspeakers were recessed intothe stage risers to providenearfield coverage for thefront rows, while fourgroundstacked BlackineS18’s, set side by side, handlethe sub-frequencies.

The entire system ispowered by Lab GruppenFP3400’s with six eachcontrolling the two W8LChangs. System control is viathree DP6i’s — XTA’s

dedicated installationprocessors — controlling themain W8LC Line Arraysystem, WTUBs andsubwoofers.

Across the concourse at theConvention Centre threeinteractive ‘in the round’exhibitions kick-started theexhibition season withcivilisations as its theme.

of four clusters of two Blackline F15’s and an outer ring of fourclusters of four W8LM’s.

Statistically, the four-and-a-half-month event (which is beingoperated by management company, General Location) willfeature 450 concerts, 44 theatrical and dance performances, 20circuses, 10 major exhibitions and 45 seminars – among manyother events – all designed to reflect on the major challengesfor the 21st century. Expecting more than five million visitors,

the organisers hope this will become a recurring international event.

But in the meantime, the realisation of The Forum remains atribute to the hard work of all the designers and contractorsresponsible, and a particular source of satisfaction for JordiRoselló and his team at AdagioPro, who had worked so hard tobroker the deal.

Distributed in Germany byAtlantic Audio, Martin Audiosystems have been in actionat a variety of events recently.

Every summer a medievalfestival draws 100,000 visitorsto Prince Luitpold`sKaltenberg Castle, nearMunich, Germany. Andamidst the merriment offools, jugglers, wenches andmedieval marketplaceactivities, the popularhighlight is the KaltenbergTournament of Knights.

The competition ofhorsemanship and weaponrytook place in a 10,000-seatarena over ten days. Rain Agespecified Martin components,and their crew, led by PascalJohn and Jochen Petri,enhanced the festival with 36x Blackline F12’s, six W8C’sand six WSX subs, poweredby Crest Pro 8200`s and controlled by XTA DP226 units.

Rain Age and Martin Audiowere in action again,equipping the second stage atthe sold out Southside OpenAir in Germany.

Finally, Michael Enchelmaierhas invested in 16 x W8LC’s,16 x W8LM and 16 x WSXsubs. Having been in businessfor 25 years Michael has beena long-time fan of Martinsystems, recalling his firstexperience with Martin bins— back in the late 1970’s!

After hiring the Martin LineArrays several times during2003, it was logical for him toinvest in his own system.What impresses him most is

Meanwhile, Live Audio EventTechnic GmbH, located inBraunschweig, have investedin a combination of 16 xW8LC, 16 x W8LM and 16 xLE12JB monitors. Afterevaluation, Georg ‘Schorse’Hentschel’s companyfavoured the versatility of theMartin systems, reasoningthat his production companycaters for a wide variety ofshows — from classic andjazz, to sporting events,industry shows forVolkswagen and bands suchas Motörhead. He says, “Withthe combination of LC’s &LM’s I can cover all theseevents without compromise.The system is like all the

Aside from his open airevents, Michael was on dutywith the W8LC system on shows for Marla Glenn and Bill Wyman in 2004.

Other events onEnchelmaier’s roster includeKieler Woche 2004 (in Kiel,

Eastsee). This is the biggestsailing event in the world,withmore than 500,000 peopleattending over ten days.

Finally, Martin enclosureswere on duty at at theNürburgring Truck Grand Prix2004 — the biggest Truckerand Country Festival inEurope, combined with theFIA Racetruck EuropeanChampionship, located on

the well known NürburgringGrand Prix race track. 30.000people saw country artistslike Tom Astor, JoeHodgkinson, Gudrun Lange &Kactus and Silverwood on themain stage, using 16 xW8LC’s, eight W8LM’s and20 x WSX subs. Anothersmaller stage — located inthe Paddocks — wasequipped with W8LM’s andWSX subs.

Game Set and Matchless AudioWhen Philips again provided their 40 sq metre big screen toentertain tennis fans gathered on the Hill (now affectionatelydubbed ‘Henman Hill’) during Wimbledon Tennis Fortnight, RGJones — Wimbledon’s public address contractors — providedauxiliary audio playback via two W8LM Mini Line Arrays,ground-stacked on either side of the screen.

Simon Hodge joined overall project manager, Tim Speight, tohelp design and install the system. Said Simon, “The All EnglandLawn Tennis and Croquet Club felt that as the popularity of theHill has grown, the existing sound system was starting to proveinadequate. This year, the chosen position for the systemdictated that each array could be only five elements deep.

“Admittedly, I doubted that this would be sufficient, but myfears were quickly allayed — it was a difficult project but usingViewPoint™ (Martin’s proprietary predictive software) as aguideline, I need not have worried.”

He added that despite arriving on site armed with hisprocessing tools “the W8LC sounded great straight out of the box.”

‘Henman Hill’ is situated adjacent to the new No. 1 Court. AndSimon Hodge says one of the advantages of the W8LM systemwas not only the projection outfront but lack of spillage fromthe rear. “Because of the proximity of the screen to CentreCourt the Club had experienced problems with theprogramme sound leaking into the audience — but this was somuch more directional. I was surprised how far it threw, but atthe same time it provided even coverage over a very wide,180° area.”

With a crew anchored in the large Broadcast control room, RGJones took the feed from host broadcasters, the BBC, andinjected their own paging calls. “We were delivering either adirect source feed to the Hill from the BBC — or DVD duringdowntime,” said Tim Speight. “The general consensus was

whether it was handling programme feeds or paging calls, theMartin system behaved exceptionally well.”

Celebrating their recent management buyout, RG Jones, havealso completed a season working in the picturesque setting ofLeeds Castle, near Maidstone, for Relevant Productions.

The flown Synco Martin W8LC Line array (configured 16enclosures a side) was put through its paces during a variety ofperformances spanning a ten day period, including a classicevent, children’s concert and a Glen Miller tribute orchestra.

“We had only just taken stock of the new kit and we had theentire 32-box system straight out on duty,” reports Simon Hodge.

“We ran the Compact Line Array reasonably flat — and so farwe just love it. It was a joy to use, both in terms of the ease itwent in and out and the way it sounded.

“What was particularly impressive was the amount of gainbefore feedback — there was loads of headroom in the system.”

New Wine, New W8LCAugust saw the Royal Bath &West Showground in theWest of England’s ruralShepton Mallet besieged by‘pilgrims’ from all over thecountry attending the annualChristian New Wine Festival,followed by Soul Survivor.

During the changeover toSoul Survivor, the ranks of11,000 people swelled to14,000 — stretching thesite’s services to the limit —when the 96m x 69m AlbionWoods Big Top wasreconfigured for the moreyouth-oriented event.

Some of the traditionalproblems experienced by thepromoters were eased thisyear when both eventsconverted to a Compact Line Array (W8LC) for thefirst time, provided byWigwam Acoustics.

Shepton Mallet has been thesite for their fast-growingfestivals since 1989, andwhen Wigwam took over thecontract nearly a decade agothey immediately increasedthe sound specification. Inthose days the event tookplace on the site’s ShoweringPavilion but more recentlyhad to employ the 6,000-capacity big top, whereconventional loudspeakerswere groundstacked.

“There had always been adesire to fly a directionalsystem, to reduce the spilloutside the tent and minimisethe impact on thesurrounding villages,”explained productionmanager, Greg Szabo. “Ontop of that we now have farfewer speakers dottedaround the tent.”

Long-standing FOH engineerCharlie Jones takes up thestory. “People had beenraving about the Martin

system. With the W8LC wenow have absolute controland can focus the soundwhere we want it.”

Both men paid credit to theefforts of Martin Audio’s JimCousins, who set up thesystem, using Martin Audio’spredictive softwareViewPoint™ to set the correctarray angles — which bothoptimised the performanceand obviated any spill. As aresult Charlie and his team(co-engineer Steve Phillipsand monitor man IanHopkinson) were delightedto be mixing the wide rangeof source material — fromlectures, seminars to fullensemble live performance— through the system.

A lot of the low-levelconversational chat that takesplace on stage using Lavaliers,is now intelligible to theentire audience. “Wigwam’sW8LC front of house rig —plus the six W8LM Mini LineArrays we have used fordelays — have solved thatproblem,” says Charlie.

Helping achieve the coveragefrom the stage were a furtherfour (per side) W8LM’s,while at the delay points apair of WLX subs were also flown.

The Martin W8LC proveditself sufficiently versatile tobe quickly reconfigured forSoul Survivor. The stage andFOH array were movedback, the delays re-angled to

allow for the grandstandremoval as productioncompany Sound Foundationtook over from Greg Szabo.

Summarising, Greg reports,“We have had a lot of goodfeedback with the Martinsystem and people areamazed that such a smallsystem could fill a 6,000-capacity tent.”

Life on the Ocean Wavefront

Passengers on one of the world’s premier luxury cruise ships,the QE2, are enjoying the results of an extensive technicalrefurbishment of the Grand Lounge, the largest entertainmentvenue on the ship. A new Martin Audio sound system has beeninstalled to handle the Lounge’s diverse programme of events.

The Grand Lounge stretches over two decks of the ship,accommodating 450 people in cabaret-style seating on twolevels. Twice a night, the ship’s on-board cast present theatricalproduction shows, and occasionally guest cabaret artistsperform, as well as dance bands. Cunard’s EntertainmentTechnical Manager Andy Pygott had to search for a soundreinforcement system that was flexible enough to handle theseshows, as well as all the other events that are hosted by theGrand Lounge throughout the day.

“We were looking for a system that would deliver even soundcoverage across the whole room, with a particular emphasis onvocal clarity,” says Pygott. “The system needed to have theability to handle all these different types of shows and providethe levels required without feedback for everything from aspeech to a full theatre production. We looked at a lot ofoptions, considering also what would be easy to install. We’dused Martin Audio speakers previously, and concluded that this

system would be the ideal passive solution for ourrefurbishment.”

With the stage thrusting slightly forward into the audience area,Andy Pygott and Ross Portway, the sound designer, couldn’t usea conventional theatre configuration. Either side of the stage isa column where two W2 full-range cabinets are mounted, onefacing inwards, the other facing outwards. Behind each of thesecolumns, an EM26 provides fill for the left and right wings of theroom. At the front of the stage, EM15s provide the front fill for the first rows, while a single W2 flown 30 feet above thestage provides a centre presence. 20 feet into the Lounge, a pairof EM26s is mounted on a column each side of the room:further back still, two EM15s are ceiling-mounted under thebalcony. Two WS2A subs have been stacked on either side ofthe stage.

Installed by Stage Electrics, Ross Portway and the Cunardtechnical team, the system is powered by Crown, with MediaMatrix to align and EQ the system because of the number ofdelay speakers in the room. “The verdict on the Martin systemis excellent,” says Pygott. “We’re getting reports fromeverybody – the passengers, the staff and the acts – that thenew system is fantastic.”

Elevate gives Delhi Fabric Style LuxuryAfter seeing fashionableLondon club fabric in action,Indian entrepreneur,Manpreet ‘Monty’ Chadhacould see the potential forintroducing this cutting-edge Western-style concept to Delhi.

Last month the man whoseempire is founded on cinemasand shopping malls saw hisdream fulfilled when Elevateopened in the suburb ofNoida — with MostTechnical’s Dave Parry,overseeing the concept andcreating the same kind ofaudio luxury as he had atLondon club, fabric.

The new 1200-capacity venuehas been custom-built on thetop three floors of a neweight-storey shopping centre,while above that a roofterrace offers spectacularviews overlooking New Delhi.At 3am a separate watergarden opens up to allow thecrowd to witness the sunriseover the city.

Elevate’s sound system is thussplit into four zones. Controlthroughout is via a BSSSoundweb network — alldesigned by Most Technical’sFluke.

Some 46 x 1K ‘Buttkicker’Bodysonic dancefloortransducers are at the heart ofa Martin Audio sound systemon the Main dancefloor,powered by six Custom LineaResearch amps under BSSprocess control — similar to that found in theClerkenwell club.

The main soundreinforcement systemcomprises four Blackline H3’sand six S218 subs, infilled witha pair of Blackline F15s andfour F8’s — and powered bya combination of Martin

Audio MA2.8, MA4.2, MA1.6and MA1400 amplifiers.

In the DJ booth are a pair ofPioneer CDJ-1000’s, TechnicsSL1210 MkV and Allen &Heath Xone:464 mixer, withthe DJ’s reference soundbeing provided by a pair of thenow standard Blackline F12’s(and single S18 sub).

Above that on the Mezzaninelevel, six Blackline F8’s,underpinned by a pair ofS18’s, are powered byMA1400 amplifiers,

All the main dancefloorlighting was supplied by DaveMartin at Total Audio Visual.

The beam lighting ispunctuated by a laser suppliedby Laser Electronics andcontrolled by their Zioncontroller, while the VJ hastwo 5K ANSI lumen DLPprojectors at his disposal.

All this will make the clubmighty attractive to theinternational DJs that thevenue is looking to attract(already there are plans tobring in Sasha, Ali B and JamesLavelle).

The entire club was designedby Soo Wilkinson of IglooDesign (also responsible forRehab in Leeds — where thesound was again designed byParry — and Baby Cream inLiverpool).

“We were conscious of notwanting to go over there andcreate the west in the east,”she said. “You can go into anyhotel bar in Delhi or Bombayand quite frankly you could beanywhere in the world. Wewanted the experience of

Elevate to feel like you werein India.” In order to makesure this was the final resultSoo and partner, John Grant,travelled as much as possiblearound India, particularlyseeking inspiration in Rajistan,Kerala and Goa.

And it looks to have paid off.For Dave Parry reports after

the opening night, “The localslove it and we actually hadMiss Universe (a Bollywoodstar) visit on the Saturday.”

And so delighted is MontyChadha that he is alreadyscouring sites in thefashionable Mumbai region ofIndia with a view to opening asecond venue.

Wavefront adds Power to MercedesThe concept of the ‘AMG Dream Gallery’ was to show offsome of the most beautiful designs and leading technologydevelopments in the Automotive world.

Primarily it came into being as a key part of the 2004Mercedes Benz dealer conference but such was the buzz andpublic interest in the latest from Stuttgart, Germany, that acouple of days were put aside for general admission.

What better location than The Overseas Passenger Terminalat Sydney’s Circular Quay, with the Opera House just acrossthe water and Sydney Harbour Bridge just around the corner.Still used to berth the big boats, the Terminal has completedsomething of a renaissance with a thorough face lift and theincorporation of some high profile restaurants.

A key feature of any dealer conference is entertainment, andIain Reed of 3200 chose his Martin Wavefront W8CL compactline arrays for the task. “We needed extremely high power ina very compact package,” explained Iain. “The systemremained in situ during the show and the package reallyrocked the place.

“We used four W8LC’s a side each stacked on top of a singleWSX subwoofer. In terms of the audio requirement this wasmore than adequate but what impressed Mercedes the mostwas the system’s appearance. High tech compact boxes were

just the ticket … so much so that they became part of the visualfabric of the show. So we had a stack sitting right next to anML430 4WD and the second stack right next to a CL Coupé!”

The king-pin of the whole event was the first Australianshowing of the resurrected ‘Maybach’ a super premium,chauffeur-driven limousine. Mercedes were supremely carefulto ensure that nothing stole its thunder; consequently it waslocated some considerable distance from the Wavefront LineArrays!

C Series Boosts Tasmanian CasinoMartin Audio loudspeakers have been used extensively as partof an ongoing audio upgrade at Country Club Resort, one ofonly two casino venues in Tasmania, Australia.

As one of the largest, and longest-established electricalcontracting companies in Northern Tasmania, ContactElectrical has for some time been a service provider toCountry Club Resort. Derek Philipson from their audio visualdivision has been working on a timelined project to upgradethe sound system across the entire venue including the maincasino gaming areas, bars, hotel and restaurant areas.

The audio system chosen for the project consists of up to 280loudspeakers from Martin Audio. “I have around 20 yearsexperience in the audio industry and have installed thousandsof speakers in my time,” says Derek. “However when MartinAudio released the C516 and C115 Contractor series I had ademo of each. The speakers performed far beyond myexpectations; the C516 is very suitable in corporateenvironments — and when I need the extra power theseMartin loudspeakers deliver the goods without question.”

On the main Gaming floor Contact also installed 35 x C115surface loudspeakers, to create the directional approach theywere looking for.

complemented by four further EM150 bass units. Althoughconsiderably smaller than the area below, it was designed toattract large crowds for sporting events, since Rea Soundinstalled a 3.3m wide IR remote electric screen and projectorsystem, together with a number of 42in plasma displays.

The third area is the nightclub venue, a computer-controlledlighting experience installed, programmed and commissionedby Rea Sound. This time the suppliers went for a Martin AudioBlackline solution for the sound, with four F12 cabinets andfour F8’s, supported by six S15 sub bass units. The long narrowvenue is divided in two by the dancefloor, with one F12 hung ineach of the four corners, to provide good sound level andquality throughout the area. Above the dancefloor, a nightclublighting rig was installed and programmed for the purpose andis complemented by behind-seating LED strip lights. The F8’sare positioned to provide coverage of the alcoves, with the S15subs concealed under raised floor/seating areas.

All areas are controlled through an Allen & Heath GR05, withlocal control in each area, and powered using Martin Audiocontrollers and amplifiers. All neatly fit into the DJ area, alongwith with an Allen & Heath Xone 424 mixer and Technicsturntables.

Like many towns across Ireland Enniskillen has seen its fairshare of modernisation. One such popular venue is the towncentre Bush Bar public bar and nightclub, which has recentlyundergone a major refit and redesign, including furniture,décor, PA, audio visual and lighting systems. Every last detailhad to be addressed in this multi-functional venue.

After discussions with many suppliers throughout Ireland,owner Nicky Cassidy opted for a Rea Sound and Martin Audiosolution. Choosing Rea Sound provided them with a wellestablished and recognised company, offering all their technicalrequirements within budget, from a single source.

The venue is divided into three zones. The main bar has arelaxed modern interior; leather bound seating and simpleinterior colours. The main function of the sound system is toprovide a high quality background sound for music playbackand sports commentary, and the use of 12 x EM15 enclosures,complemented by three compact EM150 bass units wasperfect for this requirement. Each speaker has been placed toprovide even coverage across the main bar area, and beingcompact, they are also largely discrete. Uniquely positionedLED colour-changes are located throughout the bar to providesoft touches of colour and ambience.

Italy has enjoyed an activesummer with Martin Audioline array systems, includingtwo of the major summerevents — Gods of Metal atBologna’s Made in Bo –Arena Parco Nord, andPistoia Blues, the mostfamous blues festival in the country.

This year (more than anyother) Audiosales, the MartinAudio distributor, hasconsolidated itself as theleader in the live concertarena. “It is showing that thecommercial policy,professional attitude andservice given to ourcustomers is really payingoff,” says Audiosalesoperations manager, MauroCodeluppi.

He says Audiosales has beenassisted greatly by MartinAudio, and the introductionof their Line Array series. “Ithas helped our customersmeet modern productionrequirements,” he says.

He paid tribute in particularto the W8LM (Mini LineArray). “I remember howwell this was received by theaudio industry at its firstshowing — at PLASA last year.

“This seemed the naturaldevelopment for our manycustomers who until thenhad been using the traditionalW8 system.”

He explained that the W8LMhad given rental companiesthe opportunity to win jobswhich would otherwise havegone to other firms.

For example, Genova-basedPlanet Service employed theW8LM at shows by PatMetheny Trio, BB King,

Michael Bublé, David Byrneand Giorgia, fielding 24 xW8LM enclosures and sixBlackline S218 subs insystems driven by LabGruppen amps and XTAprocessors.

At Pistoia Blues in Tuscany,Procopio Nicola also fielded16 x W8LM, in conjunctionwith 12 x W8LC and 12 xWSX subs for artists such asBuddy Guy, Steve Vai, JoeSatriani, Robert Fripp, SteveWinwood, John Mayall,Richard Johnson and CarlosSantana.

“Of course we shouldn’tforget the original W8L —the biggest of Martin’s LineArray family,” says Mauro.This was used by Fumasoli(Aosta) during the touringFree Music Festival in Milan,Turin and Naples, where thecrowd always reachedaround 60.000 and the PAinventory consisted of 28 xW8L and 12 WLX. Some ofthe artists performingincluded Stereophonics,Alicia Keys, Susan Vega, Sting, Carlos Santana andPino Daniele.

Renato Fumasoli’s companyalso flew 28 x W8L alongside12 x W8LS, with four W3’s(for front stage) for theaforementioned Gods ofMetal festival in Bologna.

Martin’s classic LE12JB floormonitor was also fielded byFumasoli — but only on thefirst day. A heavy storm torethe cover off the main stageand a ton of water floodedthe stage drenching theLE12JB’s, which had to bereplaced — although the fourMartin WSX’s used as sidefills survived.

Synco Network Alliance goesfrom Strength to StrengthIn the two years since signing an exclusive agreement to providespecially-configured versions of their Line Array systems to theSynco Europe Network, Martin Audio are delighted that therelationship continues to go from strength to strength.

After underlining their faith in the original W8L line array with asubstantial investment, Fred Heuves, MD of Synco Europe,placed an order on behalf of Synco Europe for 64 enclosures (andnecessary amplification and rigging) the moment Martin Audioannounced the arrival of the W8LM at last year’s PLASA Show.

“We were waiting for this cabinet to arrive, since we were lackinga smaller version of the Synco line array,” remembers Fred.“Based upon the experience we had with the other Martin Audioline array products we placed an order, based on its specifications,without even seeing or hearing the new cabinet. It shows thetrust we had in the product and also gave us the opportunity toshow the products to the rest of the network.”

Far from plateauing out at the end of the honeymoon period, theMartin/Synco alliance just gets tighter. “The Network now has250 of the various Synco Martin Line Array enclosures, indifferent combinations,” confirms Fred. And he announced thatSynco Europe have just signed a new member to the network —Christian Singer’s Paradigma Production of Bucharest — whohave opened their account by purchasing a substantialcombination of Synco Martin W8LM Mini and W8LC Compactline arrays.

He sees this as a breakthrough, opening up greater potential inEastern Europe. In fact Paradigma have already extended theirorder with a further six W8LM enclosures to cover a show bySarah Brightman, and with Romania aiming to gain ECmembership in 2007 Fred Heuves believes it is the perfect timeto expose the system to the old Eastern bloc countries.

The Synco Group originally had their own OEM brand. “Butwhen line array technology came into the picture we auditioneda number of systems,” Fred recounts. “The beauty of the MartinAudio line array systems, besides their stunning performance, isthat we were able to match them seamlessly with the currentequipment, available in the Synco Network.

Furthermore, he says, the Synco line array equipment is fullycompatible with the original Martin Audio line array, which givesnew potential clients for the system the opportunity of choosingeither Martin Audio, or joining the Synco Network … dependingon their commercial needs.

At the same time Synco Europe standardised their Synco linearray systems on Martin Audio amplification, changing the faciaplates and badging them ‘Synco Martin’. They made their owncontrol software compatible with the system to optimise theperformance, and used ViewPoint™, Martin Audio’s predicitivesoftware, to optimise the splay angles of the hangs.

As a result, the eight European partners now have the resources

to cover every type of show imaginable — from large outdoorevents, to corporate shows, theatre and television.

“The relationship is extremely positive and the Synco partnersare really feeling the benefits,” believes Fred, “and there seemsno end in sight.”

Kylie’s Date with Deutsche BankA unique private concert wasgiven by Kylie Minogue in a converted Barcelona casino recently.

The audience comprised 500VIP guests of Deutsche Bank,who were treated to a 70-minute Greatest Hits show,with sound reinforcementprovided by Kylie’s system providers, CapitalSound Hire.

Forming the repertoire was amixture of arrangementsfrom the last two major tours,Fever and On A Night Like This,although the staging was on a much smaller scale than the conventional touring production.

The venue was the Finca MasSolers outdoor casino, justoutside the Catalan capital,and Cap Sound wascontracted on behalf of KylieMinogue, by the eventproduction company, OuterSanctum.

Although this was only a one-off show, the preparationtook in excess of two weeks,with ten days rehearsals andfour days on-site time.

“The production was quitespecific,” explained PaulTimmins of Cap Sound, whohas been working with Kyliefor the past four years. Thiswas because the full ensemble— including drums, guitar,bass, keyboard player, twobacking vocals and Kylieherself — were all on in-earmonitors.

At front-of-house, MartinAudio W8LC Compact LineArray loudspeakers wereflown in two hangs of sevenper side, under a pair of WLXsubs, with a floor-mountedW8LS on each wing. The

system was optimised using Martin Audio’s ViewPoint™software.

The stage was built by OuterSanctum to Kylie’sspecifications, but with thesystem flown about threemetres behind the front lineof the stage, the dispersionwas quite adequate to coverthe nearfield, obviating theneed to use the front fills.

Paul Timmins remainedconfident that thisconfiguration would notinduce feedback. “When wedid the Fever tour in 2002there was a similar thrust; itworked then, with Kylieperforming in front of the PA.”

The bigger problem, he says,was in access and loading.“We had eight trucks ofequipment, including the Vari-Lite lighting,” he said. “In totalwe carried a crew of 93people — for an audience ofjust 500!”

Engineering the show wereKylie’s trusty team of ChrisPyne (at FOH) and Rod

Matheson (monitors), whoagreed that the use of Martin’sW8LC line arrays had beenperfect for the requirementsof one of Kylie’s first everprivate corporate shows.

“This was the first time I haveused the W8LC’s as a mainsystem and I was very happywith the result,” retorts Chris.“I also think Martin have oneof the best rigging systems onthe market today!Dispersion wise the systemworked well and we wereable to aim it just over thefront lip of the stage and avoidany feedback problems withKylie’s vocal mic.”

In addition to performing several numbers from their new albumBorrowed Heaven, including their new single Summer Sunshine, theband played old favourites like Runaway and Breathless.

The date furnished an ideal opportunity for John Henry’s toaudition the Martin system, which is on the company’s shortlist forpurchase. “We are looking to buy a small line-array system,”confirms John Henry’s Pepin Clout.

The set-up featured just four W8LM’s left and right, with two WLXsubs a side, all managed by Martin Audio DX1 system controllersand MA2.8S and MA4.2S power amplifiers. The system wasoptimised using Martin Audio’s ViewPoint™ array software.

Martin Audio’s Jim Cousins commented, “The showcase was agood test for the W8LM mini line array. Although the Cochrane isa small theatre it can be tricky acoustically, with the mix positiontucked away at the back under a very low ceiling. ViewPoint™optimised coverage from the front row to the ‘under-balcony’ mixposition without causing feedback or exciting slap-back from the‘balcony’ front wall. The gig was a very relaxed affair with plenty oflight-hearted conversation between The Corrs and their audience.The powerful little W8LM system really brought out the group’s

exquisitely Irish sound and provided the intimacy and detailrequired for such an event.”

“We liked the way the boxes go together,” says Clout, “it was veryeasy to rig and to set up, and it delivered excellent coverage in thetheatres.”

And another fan was industry veteran live sound engineer AngeJones, who declared, “Martin Audio have a real winner in theW8LM Mini line array system.”

As with many parishes acrossthe country, the LutheranChurch of Hope outside DesMoines, Iowa, is growing fast.

Their Easter Service used tobe manageable enough for asmall high school gymnasiumdown the street. Now, withalmost 10,000 congregants inattendance, they had to holdtheir popular Eastercelebration in the Des MoinesMemorial Veterans MemorialAuditorium — with a full-blown audio system cappedoff by a W8LC Compact LineArray system.

As articulated by Brian Ingwellof Go Audio, contracted bythe Lutheran Church ofHope’s Media MinistryDirector Josh Kaiser toprovide sound, the challengeswere substantial: “TheChurch had done this event insmaller venues and hadcoverage issues with peoplenear the stage being adverselyaffected by high volumelevels, so they wereinterested in exploring thebenefits a line array couldoffer. It was imperative tohave a system that soundednatural and allowed everyonespeaking to be clearly heardand understood. Finally,directivity and isolation werea concern as there were twolarge choirs on stage tocontend with.”

The hall itself “was atraditional auditorium withquite a long reverb time, and alot of low end buildup …typical problems for this typeof venue.”

Go Audio’s solution? MartinAudio played a big role:“When it comes to compactline array systems, we haveyet to find a mid-size box that

has the vocal clarity and low-end output of the W8LC. Thesensitivity for the box is greatgiven that it’s fully horn-loaded. The output isamazing; the low-endextension is unbelievable for asingle 12in driver. We’ve doneseveral jobs where we’vebrought in subs and put themon an Aux, and didn’t evenhave to use them becausethere was enough low-endcoming out of the main array.”

Specifically, the systemconsisted of 28 W8LCcompact line array cabinets ––four hangs (two 10-deep fronthangs and two 4-deep sidehangs) plus 12 Martin AudioWSX subwoofers and fourEM56 front fills.

The rest of the systemconsisted of a Midas Heritage2000 with a Midas Venice 160submixer at FOH, aSoundcraft MH4 as monitorconsole, tc electronic 1128EQ, and QSC PowerLightamplifiers with Ashly Protea4.24C processing.

Josh Kaiser echoes BrianIngwell’s sentiments: “As afirst-time line arrayexperience for us, it was verygood. The sound was verynatural. I didn’t have to applymuch EQ.

“For small boxes, the W8LC’sproduce a lot of sound and Ihave yet to hear a person atthe event say they couldn’thear and understandeverything. Even in the back,at the top of the arena in the‘nose bleed’ section,everything was crystal clear.

“My supervisor, head of theWorship, even said, ‘We’vegot to have those boxes in ourworship centre!’”

Pulse’s Dramatic DebutTaking off like a multi-coloured rocket over the downtownOrlando, Florida club scene on July 4th weekend, the Pulse UltraLounge immediately set new standards for design, audio qualityand lighting as part of a total environment designed tooverwhelm the senses.

Putting a new spin on the concept of Ultra, Pulse was designedby Jimi Beach of GIST, with audio, video and control systemsprovided by Jeff Kenney and Heavier Than Gravity, one ofFlorida’s most progressive installers. Because Pulse owner RonLegler wanted the finest sound imaginable in every room tomatch the outrageous decor, Martin Audio was used throughout.

Much anticipated, Pulse wowed the opening night crowd with atriple-themed layout featuring a white Martini room bathed incolour-changing lights, the exotic red plush Jewel Box room, andblack Adonis room with a stage area.

For audio in the all-white Martini room, 12 Martin AudioC115T’s are recessed into a soffit that traverses one half of theroom. Three EM15T’s were deployed to provide piano monitorfor a Yamaha mini grand in the satellite bar system as well asadditional impact — or “oomph” as Kenney puts it — around thebar area, all powered by QSC amps. The control area providesDVD music/video on the plasmas or switcher to the upstairs DJbooth video system. The main room can be mixed in, with pianoand wireless microphones.

In the plush red Jewel Box room, Kenney selected the MartinAudio Blackline F15 for the main dancefloor. As he puts it,“dance music can really beat up a speaker. The F15 simply laughsat these kinds of problems. Out of the box with just five minuteson the workbench, we had raw CD output into the amplifier andsmiles on everyone’s face.”

For subwoofers he went with a horn loaded design. “It wasimportant for me to find a bottom end that could keep up withthe F15’s in volume and clarity – and my cabinets can do just that.The DJ has a nice little cozy spot on the second floor.” Sitting inthe booth are an Allen & Heath Xone 464, two Technics 1200MK5s and a Denon DN-9000 CD player.

DJ booth monitors are also Martin F15’s, while below that is asmall live performance stage which doubles as a VIP room duringthe busy nights. “Blackline F8’s provide all we need and more asstage monitor, while doubling as VIP room fill,” continuesKenney. The centrepiece of the dance floor is the original chandelier from the legendary Moulin Rouge club in Paris.

A study in basic black, the Adonis is a long narrow room with abar running the length of the room and a stage at the end, alayout which presents a unique set of audio challenges. Toaddress these, Kenney used two Blackline F12’s slung up snugagainst the ceiling “to provide enough throw to get the tunesdown most of the length of the room. A pair of F8’s at the backof the room are used to pick up the rest of the sound, and weused another pair of F8s’ as stage monitors. A single-horn sub sitsin the corner for additional fill in the room.”

Jeff Kenney concludes, “The owners were really knocked out bythe sound in all parts of the club. They wanted the kind of ‘wow’sound they’d heard about in London’s fabric club, and that’sexactly what they got!”

Genesis takes Hip Hop on the RoadCulminating a three-week tour of one-off shows, The BeastieBoys, Ludacris, Exzibit, Big Boi from Outkast, Kanye West, YingYang Twins, Too Short, and several others, all came together inAnaheim for a Power 106 FM radio concert at The Arrowhead Pond.

Following smaller shows in Denver, Dallas, Greensboro, andNorth Carolina — all of which were broadcast live in localmarkets with variations on the all-star hip hop lineup — thisshow was the largest, with an audience of around 24,000 fillingthe 270-degree seating. The Beastie Boys brought their own DJriser, complete with video wall, and Big Boi was traveling with

both support musicians and singers, requiring several additionalrolling risers for quick changeovers.

It is 135ft to the grid in The Pond and with 29 points in theshow, Genesis Audio Systems had to plan ahead. Additionalaudio, including another 12 2 x 18in subwoofers, was addeddue to the show’s high profile in a major market, and theBeastie Boys having just released their To The 5 Boroughs disc.“Sometimes less is more, but sometimes more is better — andyou need to know the difference”, said Jim Jorgensen at front-of-house

The PA for the show consisted of 24 W8L’s (12 per side), witheight W8LC’s (four per side underhung), 24 Audio AnalystsAALTO (12 per side outfill), supplemented by 36 2x18in subs— all driven by Martin Audio MA4.2 and Crown power amps.

Genesis’ crew welcomes the challenges of doing Rap/Hip Hopshows. The basic set-up for monitoring this show was eight toten wedges on the downstage line on one mix, plus big sidefillswith lots of low end using four tops and four subs to reproduce

the source material at the levels the artist wanted. From there,Genesis had to provide a decent but not ridiculous wedge set-up for the DJ, according to Mike ‘Milk’ Arnold of Genesis.“They really don’t like it too loud … it skips their needles.” AsArnold goes on to explain, “Most DJ rigs consist of an InstantReplay and DJ scratching over that. These guys have spent toomany years with records skipping in bad situations, and theywant reliability on these shows.”

Digging deeper into the special challenges of a Hip Hop show,Arnold points out that “Many monitor techs complain aboutthe fabled ‘rap grip’ on mics, and too many wireless mics on

stage, and not being able to get it loud enough for the artists.Here are a few things we found helpful: First, flip every othermic out of phase (it really helps). Second, prepare two or three‘artist’ mics that can be turned up incredibly loud. Ring theseout at great length and at the same time. Then prepare two orthree ‘Posse’ mics that don’t need to be as loud, but can begiven to the shout-out guys that don’t often take a lead. Third,have a stage manager who makes sure the right guys get theright mics. Fourth, ‘Rap grip’ changes the pickup pattern of themic, so expect more feedback and prepare appropriately. Italso changes the way sound gets to the capsule.”

Genesis Audio Systems, a relatively new but already extremelybusy production company, headed up by Jim Jorgensen andbased in Phoenix, recently completed another successfulcommercial installation for the Bud Light Paseo project outsidethe America West Arena.

A major feature of the $67 million expansion project currentlyunderway at AWA, the Bud Light Paseo is located adjacent tothe east side of the popular arena, extending from JeffersonStreet on the north to Jackson Street on the south. Its mostdramatic physical feature is the 50 x 350-ft canopy, whichprovides shading and serves as a projection surface forspectacular lighting effects, still images and video. More than $1million of state-of-the-art audio and video technology has beeninstalled in the Bud Light Paseo, which features a new bar and acombination television studio/live performance stage thatextends onto the Paseo from the arena.

This ambitious install involved four outdoor kiosks filled withlighting and projection equipment, and an audio systemcovering the entire east side with an even, balanced sound, plusa smaller audio system specifically designed to cover theentertainment stage area for small concerts.

Audio for Paseo is provided from an all-Martin W8LM system.Large steel columns hold the roof system in place. From five ofthese columns, four W8LM speaker enclosures (painted allwhite and specially built with weatherproof back panels), werehung, pointing practically straight down. On three of the posts,opposite the W8LM cluster, a single S218 enclosure is hung forlow-frequency reinforcement. The entire system is driven byCrown Macrotech amps, and controlled with a Crown IQ-USM810 system controller. Source audio is provided via Pro-Tools in a 5.1 configuration. Individual control of each column

Mini Passes the Paseo Testallows the audio to travel with the video. A basketball canbounce from one end of the Paseo to the other in real time.

An additional audio system was installed on a small stage in thePaseo. This stage was intended for pre and post showcommentary in broadcast situations, as well as smaller concertssurrounding larger events. This system is comprised of fourW8LM enclosures per side as well as a WLX sub enclosureunder the stage for additional bass extension. This system isoperated from the Paseo control room in the basement of anadjacent building, with tie lines to one of the roof posts nearthe FOH position.

Each kiosk contains state-of-the-art lighting and projection, andenough air conditioning to keep the environment cool andfunctioning in the Arizona summer heat.

The canopy that was built over the Paseo was constructed ofperforated steel and painted white in order to provide greatercontrast and act as a screen, as the four projectors cover theentire block-long Paseo with individual video imagery.

Asked to convey any challenges in the audio design of the BudLight Paseo, Genesis Audio’s Jorgensen commented, “Thesingle biggest obstacle for audio was the sheer number ofreflective surfaces. By using a very small line array with precisecoverage patterns, we were able to control the area ofcoverage and not spill up onto the glass.

“The W8LM provides precise pattern control and still soundsfull range. There are several products on the market thatwould work as a complement to a main array, but as a standalone system with no processing required, this one simplysounds better.”

Phlippo Sets the Pace at SportpaleisThe TMF awards (MTVBelgium) took place in frontof a 12,000 audience in theAntwerp Sportpaleis.

Phlippo Audio and PhlippoShowlights were contractedfor the complete sound andlight production as well as thestaging, in cooperation withthe designers. Phlippo Audioflew 12 x W8L line arrayenclosures on each side ofthe stage; six W8C’s wereused as outfills, and thefrontfill was secured with 16x WT2’s. As the designdictated that the soundsystem had to be invisible,this combination was totallyintegrated within the décor.

Vooruit, a historical theatrecomplex with five separatevenues, is located in thesouth of Ghent city. The mainvenue hosts a standingaudience of 1,000 and isoften used for the moreintimate concerts and as thestarting point for Belgiantours.

Phlippo Audio was the firstBelgian company to purchasea 24 x W8LM (Mini) line arraysystem. They will use thissystem mainly for theirtheatre jobs and as well asthe Urban Trad tour (whofinished runners-up in the2003 Eurovision SongContest).

Ampco introduces W8LM at the SingelBack in December, Ampco Belgium introduced the then newW8LM Mini Line Array system to the Belgian pro audioindustry, hiring the Blue Hall at ‘The Singel’, the Royal AntwerpConservatory concert hall.

Ampco Belgium’s Steven Kemland set up four W8LM’s, flownat 3.5m high, with a single WLX sub on either side of the stage.

All the theatre engineers and rental company owners whoattended were unanimous in their praise. “The way a singlevoice, accompanied by just a piano and acoustic guitar, soundedthrough the W8LM was truly refreshing,” was a typicalcomment.

Following the demos, since the system was tuned and ready touse, FOH engineer and sound designer Alex Fostier used it fora series of concerts with a full symphony orchestra, reportingafterwards: “I’ve tried a lot of small line arrays, but I’ve neverheard a system that sounded so transparant and complete —it’s the first time I have heard a perfect stereo image.”

Ampco report that besides Phlippo Audio, three othercompanies purchased W8LM systems following the demo atThe Singel — SBE, LGR, and Big Dynamic.

Stephan Bohez has been a fanof Martin Audio for some time,and when the W8L line arraywas introduced, he was one ofthe first to adopt the system.

In recent years the focus of hisbusiness has been directedmore towards corporatebusiness and open-air events.And so when he won acontract to provide sound for afireworks show that toursBelgium during the summermonths, he set out in search ofa system that could easilyproject the sound over a widearea (without loss ofdefinition), was compact andlightweight and easy to set up.His search ended where itstarted … back at Martin Audiowith the W8LM.

“We need to set everything upin an hour or two maximum,”he said. “Due to the fact thatwe set up in public places wetry to keep the inconvenienceto a minimum.

“W8LM makes our livessimple. Two of us arrive with avan, set up our six boxes aside

The added software is easy tocomprehend and does exactlywhat it promises, Stephancontinues. “It puts clear soundexactly where you want it andprovides maximum stereocoverage. And the fact that Ican ground-stack theenclosures in smaller venues isthe icing on the cake.”

Ampco, he says, have helpedsmoothe the transition fromthe traditional soundreinforcement approach to theline array principle. “Ifeverything goes to plan we willfurther invest in the W8LM atthe beginning of next year,” he promises.

This is the first installed system using the Compact Line Arrayin China, and from the earliest stages, Martin Audio had beenthe preferred choice of the owners, who have wide experiencein the club and dining business (with chain restaurants inGuangzhou, Dongguan and Beijing).

The venue’s main DJ, Jason Tan,had also voiced his opinion that the current set-up was unableto cope, and hence began the search for an upgraded system.

When the Martin Audio Blackline system was proposed JasonTan was invited to audition it. He was so impressed that herequested a second demo — this time on site, where everyoneinvolved in Madam Wong had the opportunity to review it. Theentire operating team were so impressed with Blackline’sperformance — which matched all expectations — thatimmediately four H3 three-way, horn-loaded enclosures,driven by QSC amplification and controlled by XTA DP-226processors, were commissioned.

Martin Audio fielded a large Line Array system at this year’sFestspiele Eröffnungfeier — the opening event of the SalzburgFestival season.

The system was supplied by Technik Design, Martin Audio’sAustrian distributor, to LTV-Markus Schwenter, the Salzburg-based hire company who were awarded the contract toprovide the Festspiele sound system.

A large part of the city centre was commandeered to stage aspectacular, consisting of concerts and fireworks. However, themain system was set up on the banks of the Salzach Riverwhere powerful classics were broadcast to the audience via 16 x W8LM Mini Line Array enclosures and eight WSX subs,choreographed to an impressive firework display.

Hung in Layher towers, eight W8LM’s (per side) provided evencoverage to the entire crowd, gathered along the banks of the river.

Elsewhere, in the area of the Mirabell Palace (the residence ofSalzburg’s mayor) four Layher towers (two W8LM’s pertower) fulfilled the requirement for classical and esotericmusic, while on yet another stage a further eight W8LM’s andeight WSX subs were used to reinforce famous acapella group, Bauchklang.

Martin Audio also provided the sound for the auxiliary stages.In the location of Chiemseehof a concert by Sabine Hank andKünstlerfreund took place on a small stage, reinforced by fourWavefront W1’s and two Blackline S15, while in Domplatz —the most important location for Hugo von Hoffmannsthal´splay, Jedermann (Everyman) — a concert was given by the bandSeesaw on the Jedermann-stage (where the Jedermann

Sing Viet made a presentation to the venue’s owners, Mr Taiand Mr. Vinh, who liked the good, clean sound produced by theBlackline Series, and felt it ideal for their 350-seat club.

Aimed at the youth market (and young business execs) Vivas’dancefloor sound has been designed around four Blackline H3(three-way) speakers, a pair of F15 two-eay speakers, four S18single subwoofers and a pair of S218 (dual 18in subwoofers),driven by a pair of Martin Audio’s dedicated M3 systemcontrollers.

The system was designed and installed by Sing Viet, whopurchased the equipment from Swee Lee in Singapore.

A combination of Martin Audio and QSC amplifiers power thesystem, with a pair of Martin MA4.2’s driving the S218 and mid-low section of the H3, and three MA2.8 amplifiers running theS18’s and F15’s.

Sing Viet predict that this will open the door to other similarprojects in the City.

According to Technik Design’s Klaus Teufel, the promoter wasso happy with the performance of the Martin Audio systemsthat he immediately rebooked next year’s sound system for allshows on the Jedermann main stage (comprising 16 x W8LM’sand eight WSX subs).

H3H for Club Honolulu

Nigel Kennedy gives Thumbs Up to W8LC

The 300-capacity Club Honolulu forms part of the HotelKlaipeda — the largest hotel in Klaipeda city on the Baltic Sea.Audio consultant Dainius Okunevas specified a Martin Audiosystem, because of it worldwide reputation in the club market,favouring the powerful new design of the Blackline H3H. Theequipment was supplied by Audiotonas, Martin Audio’sLithuanian distributors, who also carried out the installation.

A pair of the new H3H (horizontal format) loudspeakers wereflown in the front, with a pair of F15’s flown at the rear, and afurther two S218 subwoofers groundstacked. Eight C115Contractor series loudspeakers act as satellites in the main area.

The system is driven by Martin Audio MA2.8 and E1300amplifiers with processing via Martin Audio’s dedicated DX1 controller.

One of the world’s most famous violinists, Nigel Kennedy,presented a series of three concerts in Belgrade recently withthe Dusan Skovran String Ensemble. Featuring his famous andunique Guarneri violin, the programme included Vivaldi’s FourSeasons, the best selling classical CD of all time.

While the first concert took place in the 3,500-seat Sava Centerusing the house PA, the second was held in the 1,300-capacityNational Theater in Novi Sad.

After checking the acoustics, sound engineer Gerry Falkental,insisted on bringing in outside production, whereupon thepromoters contacted rental company, Audio Constructor. Thecompany installed six Martin W8LC’s, purchased from TeknikDesign of Austria, along with four WSX subs and four ICT 300’sfor infill. The sound engineer was delighted with the soundquality — particularly the absence of feedback. At thesoundchack, Mr. Kennedy personally controlled the sound fromseat to seat, describing it as “superb” and “fantastic”.

As a result, the promoters insisted on using the same PA rig forthe third concert — back at Belgrade’s Sava Center. It was ahuge success for the W8LC and the view was that that this wasthe first time that sound had been properly projected into theupper balcony and back rows.

The curtain raiser for theevent was an outdoor freefestival close to the bay,where the ships were lined upready to start the race. PACompagniet sub-hired twoarrays of eight Martin AudioW8L line array enclosures,and two stacks of eight WSXpowered subs — along withQSC PLX amplifiers — fromDanish colleagues ETP, toprovide suitable coverageover the large area.

Some 55,000 people enjoyedthe final show featuringNorwegian band Kaizer’s

Deep Purple go Bananas for W8LCWojciech Musnicki, of thePolish rental company,Musnicki Sound Systems,launched his newly-acquiredMartin Audio W8LCWavefront line array systemwith a bang by supplying thesound for Deep Purple’sconcert in the Legia Stadium,Warsaw, Poland recently. TheDeep Purple concert was partof a world tour to promotetheir new album Bananas.

The main Legia Stadium PAsystem for the concertcomprised 16 x W8LCWavefront line array systems,20 x W8C WavefrontCompact systems, configuredas eight W8LC plus two W8Cinners per side, and eightW8C outers per side witheight WSX subwoofers perside. A number of W8C’swere also used as stage floods.

Orchestra. To quote localnewspaper StavangerAftenblad: “The sound wasexcellent, and veryimpressive. You are supposedto feel a thump in your chestat a rock concert, and on thisoccasion you really did. Thesound travelled so far thatpeople living on an islandacross the bay thought theyheard thunder. Then theyfigured it must be theneighbour’s son practising hisdrum kit.

“But in fact it was Kaizer’s!”

The local city council ofStavanger was responsible forthe event and the superlativeskept pouring in: “We are lost

for words; this is the bestfestival ever.

“The sound was sensationaland all the technicalities werehandled excellently!”

Martin Audio 2-input, 6-output DX1 LoudspeakerManagement Systems wereused for system crossoversand band zoning. Amplifierracks were equipped withMartin Audio MA2.8Samplifiers for the W8LC’swith Martin Audio MA4.2Samplifiers for the WSX

subwoofers and Hill TX1000amplifiers for the W8C’s.

Commenting on the unusualsystem configuration, MartinAudio’s Jim Cousins said,“Legia Stadium has heavilyraked seating to the sides ofthe audience but the far endof the pitch is completelyopen to a distant residentialarea. The Deep Purplesystem configuration used the

16 available W8LC’s to form atight, vertically-controlledpitch system. WavefrontCompact W8C’s were usedas “mosh pit” fills. The rest ofthe W8C’s were used in 2-wide, 4-high progressivecurvature side hangs to form shorter-throw, wide-coverage systems for the side seats.

Talk of renewing the soundsystems has been innegotiation since 1995. In2003 two companies, Atexand Telecom, finalised acontract with A&T TradeCompany for developing anew sound system for theRed Square parades.

In August 2003 Atexcontacted A&T Trade askingfor a compact, mobile,reliable and powerful soundsystem, with the result that aMartin Audio line array waschosen, consisting of apackage of four cabinets anda mobile rack. The systemwas tested at the most

unfavourable points, and theresult exceeded allexpectations, passing therigorous procedures laiddown by Atex, whosespecialists were highlyappreciate of the soundquality, reliability andconstruction of the newMartin Audio system.

The entire system includes20 x W8LC speakers. Oneset comprises two handcarts, each containing twospeakers. The speakers arehoused in two buses, eightpieces in each bus (with onepackage in reserve). The fieldsystem is fed by a dieselgenerator or UPS battery,able to provide half an hour’s

functionality of the system.

The Martin Audio line arrayhas to work in the mostextreme conditions.

Yuri Shilin, head of Atex, says:“We were principallyinterested in the quality andreliability of the soundsystem. The Ekaterinburg branch ofA&T Trade faced thechallenge of installing thesound system withoutdisturbing the interiorarchitecture — ie to make itas unobtrusive as possible.The acoustic requirementwas to provide uniformsound pressure at all thethree tiers of the hall, with a

sound level not less than 119dB.

Furthermore, the newsystem needed to achieveboth transparency of musicaltexture during concerts andspeech intelligibility duringconferences.

The audio infrastructure wasthus built around MartinAudio line array elements —with W8LC and WSX hornsubwoofers. Eight W8LC’s(with four subwoofersunderneath) are suspendedon each side, and the systemswere set up using the MartinAudio dedicated DX1controller.

First Russian Tour a Big Success

Mobile TeleSystems Company (MTS), the largest mobile phoneoperator in Russia and CIS, has been undertaking a promotionaltour throughout the regions of Russia including Vladimir, Tver,Nizhni Novgorod, Kazan, Yaroslavl, Arkhangelsk, Ekaterinburgand Smolensk. Besides advising on mobile phone contracts, theevent provides various entertainment — including discos,exhibitions and rock concerts.

Ogni Ufy’s ColiseoThe sound and lighting installation of Coliseo Dance andConcert Complex — part of Ogni Ufy — is one of the mostimportant projects ever implemented by A&T Trade Company,since it is the largest dance and concert complex in Eastern Europe.

Ogni Ufy (meaning ‘Lights of Ufa’) also includes tworestaurants, equipped with facilities exclusively distributed by A&T Trade.

Coliseo is decorated in ancient Roman style, with a largedancefloor that can transform into a concert hall stage. In theSportivnye Khroniki Hall there is a wrestling ring comparablewith the best in the world.

Complex calculations were employed during the constructionof the venue, ensuring that it would become a real acousticmasterpiece. The installers applied sound-reflecting and sound-absorbing materials and calculated the angles of soundincidence and reflection. As a result, the hall is well-suited forconcerts and discos.

Two independent sound systems were developed especially forOgni Ufy: one for concerts the other for discos. And when aparticularly powerful sound is needed the two systems can beused simultaneously.

The sound installation includes Martin Audio Wavefront andBlackline systems — a single Wavefront W8, four W8S sub-bass, two compact W8C’s, eight Blackline F215’s (with fourS218 subwoofers), and LE400C monitors for the stage.

The entertinment at Ogni Ufy is already in full swing. Audiencescan witness unforgettable shows, while the country’s mostfamous artists look forward to appearing on the Coliseo stage,since the sound and lighting production are on a world level. Allthis is due to the specialist company A&T Trade, whoimplemented the original installation for this unique venue.

Featuring Martin Audio sound and Martin Professional lighting,Martin Tour has enjoyed a long co-operation with A&T TradeCompany, for whom this project was extremely important,since these legendary brands were being toured for the firsttime in Russia under rigorous conditions.

Thus, the rental company piloted a touring package utilisingMartin Audio line array systems. These comprised W8LCCompact line arrays, WLX subwoofers, LE400C floormonitors, Blackline F215 2-way trapezoid systems (as side fills)and MA series amps.

Audio professionals from different regions had the opportunityto see the systems in use, in arduous situations, and A&T Tradebelieve this will be a powerful spur to generating largerapplications of the technology in mobile touring situations.

The principal chose a whitefinish for the installedpackage to match thelightness of the interior.

The very first event at thehall was a complete success,which proved the excellenceof the sound installation.

El Foro

Finally, on the site of the theancient Palace of Jai Alai, the3,000- capacity El Foro hasbecome Tijuana’s newestconcert venue. The buildinghas wide open spaces insideand is ideal for liveperformances, deliveredthrough a MartinW8LC/W8LM line arraysystem, and WSX subs.

Originally built in 1929 it wasreconstructed after a fire in1959. Players from all overthe world gathered there totake part in Jai Alai, a sportthat has its origins in theBasque region of Spain.

Although games have notbeen played there for severalyears local promoters haverecognised its potential,bringing in numerous shows,Today it is run by prominentconcert promoter Enriquevon Borstel, along with TheBox Organisation, who havebrought high-profile, Spanish-language shows to the Tijuana region.

RMS Commit to Line Array Compact

Taking Martin to Martin

Martin Audio haveannounced yet a further LineArray purchase in EasternEurope, with a W8LC/W8Ccombination sold toHungarian rental company,RMS.

Tibor Kiss’s company hasadded 12 x W8LC CompactLine Array enclosures, along with eight conventionalWavefront 8 Compact(W8C), a pair of WSX subs and two DX1 system controllers to itsrental inventory.

Rock Centrum, the Slovak distributor for Martin Audio,supplied a W8LC system to rental company Elektronik Plus —in time for the celebrations in the city of Martin to mark theSlovak Republic’s membership to the European Union. The 12-enclosure system is believed to be the first line array in thecountry.

Immediately after delivery, a full training and demonstrationsession was supervised by Martin Audio’s Martin Kelly andRock Centrum’s Peter Foldvari, who showed how differentbox configurations might be implemented.

RMS specialise in providingsound reinforcement forrock and pop concerts, andcount heavy metal icons suchas Slayer, Manowar andAnthrax among theiraccounts, as well asClawfinger, TNT, EDDA andevents like the Sommer RockFestival.

“The reason we chose theMartin line array was becauseof its amazingprice/performance ratio,”said Tibor. “We auditioned alot of different line array

systems — but always foundsomething that didn’t quite fitthe picture.

“However, Martin really hitthe spot. The sound clarity isfantastic and you can hear theslightest tweaks to thesystem, which lets you workwithout compromise. Riggingis also a breeze and we canrun the system up quicklyand easily. What more couldwe ask for?”

“The system sounded excellent — right from the word go,”exclaimed Peter, adding that a week later it was making itsofficial debut during four days of celebrations. “The result wasamazing, confirming everything that had been spoken andwritten about this system.”

“The W8LC proves that we no longer need to transport large,heavy boxes in order to achieve perfect sound,” addedBranislav Kucerik from Elektronic Plus. “The Martin Audiosystem provides everything that we need.”
