On Saturday 6th Feb, in biting cold wind and rain, the 2s pulled out a great team

performance against Rugby Welsh.

Despite going 5 points down from virtually the first play of the game, Buckby came back

strongly. Hooker Dan Burton was well supported in the front row by Ollie Spokes and Callum

Evans, enabling him to take a scrum against the head.

This allowed Mikey Kemp to set the back line running.

Nick Denman fed Craig Eales who in turn brought

brother Carl into the line and he crashed over to

bring the scores level. Nick Denman got Buckby’s 2nd

try after being assisted by Chris Page and the

conversion made the score 12 v 8.

The second half began with a strange try. Will North gathered the kick off and fed Nick

Denman who chipped the ball towards the Rugby Welsh line. George Boston chased hard but

as the defending winger came across, he looked favourite to get the ball first. However as

he tried to hack it into touch, all his boot found was fresh air and Boston had the presence

of mind to steady his run, pick the ball up and dab it down for a 17 v 8 lead.

Buckby’s 4th try started with a weaving run from Jacob Draper who retrieved the ball on

his own 10m line and stepped two defenders to take the ball up to the opposition 22. Russell

Swain and Steve Cantrill cleared out the ruck and Callum Evans picked up the ball to spin

around the defending Rugby Welsh pack and score in the corner. A great conversion made

the final score 24 v 8.

Long Buckby RFC has always had strong links with the farming community, with many

farmers, farm workers and those working in the agricultural industry representing the club.

Continuing this tradition are Chris & George Page. Chris has represented the club at all

levels progressing through the mini & junior section and breaking into the senior sides in-

cluding the first team during the past few seasons, whilst George represents the club at

U10 age group.

Both have experienced success on the

pitch and in December both experienced

success in the agricultural world at the

Rugby Fat Stock show at Stoneleigh. Chris

won the Young Farmers category and

Reserve Champion with a Fat Steer and

George won a prize for Champion Produce

and Champion Ewes. Well done and the

club wish you both continued success in the

farming show circuit and with your rugby

with Long Buckby RFC.

Last year as a club we where chosen to help promote Mini & Junior rugby at a special

World Cup event @ Moulton College, which included our U9 & U10’s displaying their skills on

the TV for local news!

On Friday 29th January a parent from our U13’s responded to a Facebook request from

Northampton Saints for 20 players to help with the pre match celebrations for the

Northampton Saints vs Wasps match, which was being televised live. We where able to

rally 26 lucky players from various age groups to help, who enjoyed the pre match build up

on the sacred hallowed turf of Franklin Gardens, whilst holding the large rugby shirts for

the TV camera’s. Once again as

a club we were able to provide

our players with a once in a life

time experience and will hope-

fully continue to do so. We are

always looking to recruit new

players for all Mini & Junior age

groups, if you require any infor-

mation please don’t hesitate to

This month’s player interview is with Ben Walton who has played for the seniors for 3 seasons.

He is also officially the player who has returned his answers quickly without any nagging needed

- thanks Ben! Name: Ben Walton

DOB: 11th May 1992

Height: 5”11

Marital Status: In a relationship

Rugby team you support: Northampton Saints

1) Which position do you play? I play anywhere across the backrow. 2) How many years have you played for LBRFC and how

did you become a player? This is my third season, living locally it made sense to come down and play for my local club; especially as I knew some of the guys from school. 3) Which team do you look forward to playing the most

and why? Daventry is always a tasty affair! 4) Most embarrassing moment on a rugby field? One of my most embarrassing moments was during a game last season. I think against Old Scouts, having broken off the back of a scrum on our 22 metre line I then through a no look pass straight to an opposition player. 5) Growing up who was your all-time favourite rugby player? Without a doubt Billy Whizz Aka Jason Robinson, incredible player! 6) Favourite food and drink? A vindaloo and a decent bitter. 7) Favourite band or musician? Rick Ross. 8) If you could be another teammate for a week who would it be and why? In the current climate, Ed Sitch; so I could rock up to training wearing shorts and flip-flops and not feel the cold! 9) Who is the funniest teammate? Fergus Murray, never fails to make you laugh! 10) Who is your dream date? Sophia Bush. 11) Who’s the best dressed in the squad? Tom Haynes is usually looking rather dapper. 12) Which teammate would be voted off Big Brother first and who would win? (and why!)

Out First – Andrew Tarplee (Tarps), I’ll leave the reason why to your own imagination. To Win – Sam Evans, who would most likely be the reason for Tarp’s early exit from the show. Sam to win, purely so I wouldn’t have to listen to him bicker with Tarps constantly. 13) What teammate is most likely to avoid paying for a round when you are out? Luke Foster. Then again that would involve him coming out. 14) Describe yourself in 3 words: Humorous, driven & confident. 15) What one piece of advice would you give to children playing rugby? Run fast. 16) Who was your first ever coach and what do you remember about them? My first coach was my year 7 PE teacher, Mr Fletcher. He badgered me to play for the school team after I broke a lad’s leg in a tackle in a PE les-son (I had sworn that I would never play rugby). 17) If you could turn back time and witness one event what would it be? The moment when Chris Page fell face first of his bar stool! Regrettably I wasn’t actually present at the time but the retelling of this night always leaves me in stitches! 18) What has been the best sporting event you have ever seen? Wilko slotting that drop goal to win the world cup was pretty special! 19) If you could attend any sporting event in the world, what would it be? The Roller Derby World Cup. 20) What is your favourite thing about yourself? It was my goatee, until a daily trim turned into butchery. 21) What is one thing you would change about yourself? My height; I have always wanted to be taller. 22) The one place I would never go on holiday is… Daventry. Page 4

A very big thank you to Paul Buckley, who

supplied and installed a new mirror which

has the clubs name and logo etched into the

glass, it looks fantastic, thank you Paul.

An official photograph has been released of a

new Leicester Tigers rugby player. Rumours

have been around for several years about this

player (whose name

is yet to be con-

firmed). Many rugby

supporters in the

county of Northamp-

tonshire believe this

player has been on

the Welford Road

pay roll for several

years. Tigers claim

this new signing has

the ability to see things on the rugby pitch

which most supporters & players are not able

to see. (Must say the Tigers shirt suits his eyes)!
