INSPIRE EDUCATE SUCCEED

Welcome to The Hub at Castletown Primary School

These photos have

been taken by the

Kindy students

This week a buzz of excitement has

been centred around a new learning

space in our school called The Hub.

The Hub is our iPad learning

environment and houses 28 brand

new iPads that allows for all classes

to be able to have each student in

the class access an iPad at the same

time.

The Hub is accessible to all classes

from Kindergarten – Year 6.

Students will be using the iPads to

enhance and reflect upon their

learning. Students this week have

been learning to use the camera,

Book Creator App and Scratch Jr –

a coding app.

The school has recently subscribed

to Reading Eggs for the whole

school and parent letters with log-

on details will be sent home next

week.

We plan to have a Reading Eggs

Parent Information session on

Wednesday 23rd August and would

welcome all parents to attend this.

More information regarding this will

be sent home closer to the date.

Dear Parents

Welcome back for Term 3. Significant changes at the school include:

Our two Computer Hubs are now operational. All classes (K-6) access at least one Hub every week and with their

teachers work alongside an experienced ICT Support teacher to enhance capacity and capability. This negotiated

structure will scaffold our school’s opportunity to be accountable for reporting against Digital Technologies in 2018

and importantly support our students to both create and solve problems using computers.

The time-honoured Music Festival will be held in Week 5 and we are most fortunate to have Mrs Stevens, our Music

Specialist, to support all students in Years 5/6 (5 classes) to compete in the Class Percussion section and both Junior

and Senior Choir to represent Castletown PS. Our students are being incredibly well supported by Mrs Stevens and

we wish them all the very best for a successful 2017 Music Festival.

The introduction and uptake of Brightpath has commenced. Nine teachers have accessed training and are now working

with their respective Phase of Learning (POL) teams (K/P/1, Year 2/3 and Year 4/5/6) to introduce a Writing

assessment program in all classes. Brightpath is an assessment program developed over 10 years at the University of

Western Australia and it is a brilliant tool.

Whole school professional learning in Mathematics pedagogy occurred on the School Development Day and provided

a specific focus for our teachers to make appropriate adjustments to their classroom teaching and learning programs

for this new planning period.

I have aggregated all data from Semester 1 Reports for English, Mathematics and Attributes (Behaviour, Effort and

Attitude) for each class, Phase of Learning (POL) teams and the whole school. Teachers are collaborating in their POL

teams to set achievement targets for improvement in Semester Two. Importantly they have a specific focus to provide

differentiated curriculum access in their classrooms to ensure expected Achievement Standards are met by all

students.

Specific considerations for teachers and their planning for improvement in Semester Two include – the Principles of

Teaching/Learning/Assessment, enhancing parent engagement, Digital Technologies, collaboration/moderation and

Reporting.

Ms Ebbott, supported by Mr Weckert, has framed our Term 3 Faction Athletics Carnival and all teachers are

supporting students to train for selection in events. Teachers will have all nominations/selections completed in week 6

so that transparent event participation is available to students and parents well before the Faction Carnival (Week 8).

Ms Ebbott is working with the P&C to maximise parent engagement with the Faction Carnival.

Thanks to everyone in the school community for the support given to students and staff at this wonderful school.

On the last day of term 2 we had our Year 4-6 swimming carnival at the BOILC. Championship races began the

carnival. These were 25m freestyle, 25m backstroke and 25m breaststroke. These were followed by the fun events of

Stack-a-board and Paddle Board Partner Pickup and Drop off. There was a student, parent, teacher relay that was won

by the teachers.

Champion and Runner-Up girls and boys were awarded for each year level. The winning faction for the carnival was

Cygnet! The results for the day were: Cygnet 256, Success 198, Parmelia 197, Challenger 162.

A big thank you to all our parent volunteers, teachers and sponsors who helped make our carnival such a success.

THE VIRTUES PROJECT - DILIGENCE

WHAT IS DILIGENCE?

Diligence is working hard and doing the best job you possibly can. When you are diligent, you take special care to do things step by step. You think and move carefully to make sure things will turn out right. Being diligent is being industrious, giving all you have to whatever you do.

WHY PRACTISE DILIGENCE?

Without diligence, people act lazy and don’t get much done. They act as if what they do doesn’t count, rush through it or just do the least amount possible. Diligence helps you get things done with excellence and enthusiasm. Diligence leads to success. When you are diligent about the things you do, people rely on you and trust you to give your best effort.

HOW DO YOU PRACTISE DILIGENCE?

You practise diligence by deciding what you can do and then giving it all you have to give. You treat each action as important and do things carefully, one step at a time. You don’t rush through things. You give them your full attention. Diligence takes patience. When you work hard, you can accomplish wonderful things.

SIGNS OF SUCCESS

You are practising diligence when you…….

Pay attention to what you are doing Do things carefully, step by step Practise to the point of excellence Give your absolute best to what you do Work hard Don’t give up

Colds

Upper respiratory tract infections or colds are everywhere, especially in winter, so it is almost impossible to stop

children from catching them. Here are some points which may help:

Teach your child to cover his/her nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, and to

wash hands straight afterwards.

Hands should be washed after blowing noses and before eating.

Use tissues once and then throw them in the bin. (Avoid using handkerchiefs.)

Keep your child home from school if he/she has a cold/cough/fever/pain.

Make sure that your children eat a balanced diet of plenty of healthy foods.

Keep children away from smoke – it irritates their eyes and nasal passages, making it more

likely that they will catch a cold.

What to do if your child gets a cold

No treatment will cure a cold or make it go away more quickly, but you can help your child feel more comfortable:

Rest: This need not be in bed.

Provide extra drinks: If your child doesn’t want to drink much, try giving lots of small sips of water, milk or juice, or ice blocks to suck for older children.
