SimplyStripeSWith strong roots in French nautical history, stripes shot

to sartorial fame when Coco Chanel started championing

the simple pattern in her 1917 Breton-inspired knitwear

Shrugging off the conservatism of the 1950s, the

dawn of a new decade signalled a move towards

radicalism, before the hippie movement and flower

power took hold in the late Sixties. Designer David

Hicks took inspiration from India with his acid-edged

colours and psychedelic patterns. Team bold orange

and pink with softer brown and cream for a scheme

that’s definitely swinging.
