TIDBITS® TAKES A FIELD TRIP TO THE ZOO

It’s a good day for a field trip and Tidbits is off to the zoo! If you’re interested in animal menager-

The emperor of China Wen Wan es-tablished a 1,500-acre zoological garden about 1000 B.C., dubbing it the Garden of Intelligence. • The oldest continuously-operating zoo in the world is Vienna, Austria’s Schonbrunn Zoo, established in 1752, and still receiving more than two million visitors annually. THE ZOO (continued):ceros meaning “horn.” A baby rhino enters the world weighing about 140 lbs. (63.5 kg) and can grow to about 7,000 lbs. (3,500 kg). • You think your blood pressure is high? Consider that of the giraffe, whose pressure is two to three times higher than that of a healthy human. That’s because of that long neck! The heart of a giraffe measures 2 feet (.6 m) long and weighs 25 lbs. (11.3 kg), enabling it to pump blood with enormous force up the neck to the brain. The average giraffe stands about 19 feet (5.8 m) tall, 6 feet (1.8 m) of which are its legs. At birth it was already 6 feet (1.8 m) tall, and had endured a 6-foot drop to the ground head first! The baby calf is up and walking around only one hour after birth. An adult giraffe can weigh up to 3,000 lbs. (1,360 kg) and lives about 20 years.• The sleek cheetah, the world’s fastest mam-mal, can reach a speed of 45 mph (72 km/hr) in two seconds from a standstill. It then ac-celerates to its top speed of nearly 65 mph (104 km/hr). Yet just 300 yards farther on, exhaustion sets in, and the animal must slow down. Half of the cheetah’s running time is spent off the ground, and it can even make a turn in mid-air! • An African elephant weighs upwards of 6 tons (5,443 kg), stands 12 feet (4 meters) tall at the shoulder, and has a trunk about 7 feet (2 meters) long. It consumes about 300 lbs. (136 kg) of food in a day, and sucks up about 2 gallons (7.5 liters) of water into its trunk each time it takes a drink. The elephant is second behind human beings in longevity, with many elephants living well past age 70.

Q: I can’t remember which cable network it was on, but I really liked a series with female stand-up co-medians hosted by the red-haired actress from “The Office.” Can you tell me what network it was on and whether it will return for another season? -- Karen M., Columbus, Ohio

A: You are thinking of the TV Guide Net-work’s original comedy series “StandUp in Stilettos,” which is hosted by Kate Flannery. I am happy to report that it will be back for a second season beginning Saturday, Nov. 10, at 11 p.m. ET/PT. As you know, the show features three stand-up comedians per ep-isode, and this season’s scheduled guests include Thea Vidale, Cory Kahaney, Cathy Ladman, Luenell and Laurie Kilmartin.

Q: I remembered reading a while back that they were bringing back the sketch-comedy show “In Living Col-or.” Is that true? -- Carrie in Louisiana

A: I spoke with Kali Hawk -- who co-stars as Shelby on Fox’s “New Girl” and also stars in the “In Living Color” reboot -- and she’s not sure when it will air either, al-though she assures me that they shot the pilot episode/special, and it’s hilarious.“We taped the special, and it was going to be a two-part special to air sometime in the fall,” Kali said. “But I haven’t been told what’s going to happen with it, whether it’s going to air or when, or if it’s not going to air at all. I really don’t know. It’s just crazy because people ask me about it so often. There’s so much excitement about that show, but I don’t have any details that I can give out.”Working with the show’s creator and first-rate comedian Keenan Ivory Wayans was a highlight for Kali. “It was definitely fun working with Keenan. The man is a leg-end. The characters from the original in-stallment are still so relevant today. It was really neat to get to work with somebody who created something like that, some-thing that has such long-lasting appeal.”

THE ZOO (continued):• A gorilla may look gargantuan, but in truth the average male gorilla stands only about 5”7” (1.7 m) tall. He is a hefty fellow, how-ever, weighing in at 330 lbs. (150 kg). The fe-male is much smaller, averaging 176 lbs. (80 kg). The lifespan of these very peaceful, fam-ily-oriented creatures in the wild is about 35 years, but they will live to about age 50 in a zoo. • An adult male lion eats about 15 lbs. (7 kg.) of meat at a meal, although some might consume as much as 60 lbs. (27 kg) at one sitting! The full-grown adult male will weigh somewhere be-tween 330 and 550 lbs. (150 – 259 kg) and can run at top speed of 36 mph (58 km/hr), although not for very long. In the wilds, the King of the Jungle isn’t the great hunter you might think he is – he actually leaves more than 90% of the hunting to his female companion. Lions are the only big cats in which the appearance of males and females is distinctly different. The roar of a male can be heard as far as 5 miles (8 km) away. • Bear with us! An American black bear will reach about 660 lbs. (299 kg) at maturi-ty, and a grizzly bear tops out at 860 lbs. (390 kg), but it’s the polar bear that takes the prize, a whopping 1,760 lbs. (798 kg)! It’s the only bear that will actually prey on humans. Humans aren’t their first choice, however. In their natural habitat, they prefer seal pups, and can smell a seal on the ice 20 miles (32 km) away. The bears frequently eat only the seal’s fat just below the skin, ignoring the rest of the carcass, making for an extremely fatty diet. Yet it doesn’t seem to slow them down! A polar bear can sprint along at a speed of 25 mph (40 km/hr) for short distances, as well as jump a 6-ft.-high (1.8-m) pile of snow.• The koala bear isn’t a bear at all, but is actually a member of the marsupial family, joining the kangaroo, wallaby, and opossum. The koala’s diet consists of nothing but eucalyptus leaves, about a pound and a half per day. In fact, the koala would be extinct without the eucalyptus. Sounds like a pretty boring feed, but consider that there are about 600 kinds of eucalyptus trees and to the koala, each one tastes different. If you think your teenager is lazy, consider that the ko-ala sleeps an average of 22 hours per day! There have been koalas at the famous San Diego Zoo since 1925 when the children of Sydney, Austra-lia gifted the zoo with Snugglepot and Cuddlepie.

FAMOUS LANDMARKS OF THE WORLD:THE LINCOLN MEMORIAL

The west end of Washington D.C.’s National Mall is home to the majestic Lincoln Memorial, a monument dedicated to America’s 16th president.

Page 3Livewire Publishing Tidbits Of Hemet/San Jacinto Call To Advertise (760) 218-6505

LINCOLN MEMORIAL (continued):Here are the facts and figures about this symbol of freedom honoring the “Great Emancipator.” • The building site of the memorial wasn’t even in existence at the time of Lincoln’s death. The Washington Monument stood at the edge of the Potomac River. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers deepened the river in the late 1800s, and all the silt was deposited along the banks, creating a new land formation. Although the Lincoln Memorial Association was established two years after Lincoln’s death, the monu-ment site wasn’t selected until 1901. In 1911, President Taft signed a bill allotting $2 mil-lion for the construction, which began in 1914. • The style of the building, designed by Henry Bacon, is that of an ancient Greek tem-ple, 100 feet (30 meters) high, surrounded by an open portico, constructed from Colorado marble. Thirty-six fluted columns border the open court, symbolic of the 36 states in the Union at the time of Lincoln’s assassination in April of 1865, just six days after the end of the Civil War. In the area above the columns are 48 stone garlands and the names of the 48 states in the Union when the Memorial was completed and dedicated in 1922.• To the north and south of the central hall are cham-bers whose walls are inscribed with the words of Lincoln’s most famous speeches, his second inaugural address and the Gettysburg Address.

Above these inscriptions are 60 x 12-foot (18 x 3.7-m) murals, painted with special mixtures of paint, kerosene, and wax, formulated to protect the scenes from the elements. The paint-ings feature principles followed by Lincoln throughout his life, including freedom, liberty, justice, unity, fraternity, charity, and the law. • In the central hall sits Lincoln, immortalized in marble, 19 feet tall (5.8 m) and weighing 175 tons. The original plans called for a 10-ft-tall (3-m) Lincoln, but it was enlarged so that the statue would not be dwarfed by the huge cham-ber. It took four years to complete the sculp-ture out of Georgia white marble. Six Italian men, the Piccirilli Brothers, carved the statue in the South Bronx under the supervision of the sculptor Daniel French, and it was shipped to Washington in 28 separate pieces. (The Pic

PETBITS SPONSORED BY:

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My boyfriend and I called it quits last month after six years together. While we lived together we adopted two beautiful dogs, “Gelly” and “Robie.” We both love the dogs but aren’t sure what to do. He wants to keep them, and so do I. Any suggestions? -- Janice H., Providence, R.I.

DEAR JANICE: Pets are so much a part of our families these days that when a relationship breaks down, custody of those pets can cause as much acrimony as a struggle for custody of children. To many people, pets are their children. So settling on who gets the dogs can be a difficult process.Even if you can’t cooperate on anything else, strive to cooperate on creating a plan for both of you to spend time with the dogs. I have friends who have set up visitation rules for their pets -- one person gets the pets for a week, the other person gets them for another week. Another ex-couple decided after several months of sharing that one

would keep their three dogs all the time and the other would visit each weekend. In a breakup, pets can suffer quite a bit of stress. The dynamics of the household have changed, patterns of their humans’ behavior have changed, and one human isn’t around anymore. This alone can cause noticeable behavioral changes in your dogs, so pay close attention to them. Gelly or Robie may seem more active or hyperactive, or eat less and not be as active. Both you and your ex need to give them plenty of encouragement and love during this time.

¥ On Oct. 30, 1893, the World’s Columbian Exposition closes in Chicago. Fairgoers were offered a chance to see the first gas-powered motorcar, an alternat-ing-current power plant, a 46-foot-long cannon, a 1,500-pound Venus de Milo made of chocolate, and Juicy Fruit gum.

¥ On Nov. 4, 1922, British archaeologist Howard Cart-er and his workmen discover a stone sarcophagus containing three coffins nested within each other. Inside the final coffin, which was made of solid gold, was the mummy of the boy-king Tutankhamen, pre-served for more than 3,000 years.

¥ On Nov. 3, 1930, the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel be-tween the United States and Canada is officially opened to auto traffic. Each end of the tunnel had a 100-foot-tall ventilation tower; each tower held 12 huge fans, six for pumping fresh air into the tunnel and six for exhaust. The tunnel’s ventilation system still works just as well today as it did 80 years ago.

¥ On Oct. 29, 1948, a killer smog continues to hov-er over Donora, Pa. The town’s steel mills and a zinc smelting plant had released excessive amounts of sulfuric acid, carbon monoxide and other pollut-ants into the atmosphere. Over a five-day period, the smog killed some 20 people and made thousands more seriously ill.

¥ On Oct. 31, 1950, 21-year-old Earl Lloyd becomes the first black man to play in an NBA game when he takes the court in the season opener for the Wash-ington Capitols. The Capitols had picked him in the ninth round of the draft. After seven games with the Capitols, Lloyd was drafted into the military and sent to Korea for two years. ¥ On Nov. 1, 1967, “Cool Hand Luke,” starring Paul Newman as a tough, anti-authoritarian, poker-play-ing prisoner, debuts in theaters. The film contained the now-famous line: “What we have here is a failure to communicate.” ¥ On Nov. 2, 1986, Norwegian distance runner Grete Waitz wins her eighth New York City marathon. She finished the 26-mile, 385-yard course in 2:28.6, more than a mile ahead of the second- and third-place women in the race.

To Your Good Health By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please give me information on Alzheimer’s disease. I am very active. I would appreciate anything you can tell me about this illness. -- H.N.

ANSWER: Alzheimer’s disease is the No. 1 cause of dementia. Dementias are illnesses that lead to progressive loss of mental function. With Alzheimer’s disease, memory loss is prominent, especially loss of memory for the recent past and a loss of the ability to retain new information in the memory bank.Alzheimer’s patients have great difficulty finding even simple words to express themselves. They become lost in familiar places. As the illness progresses, they find it difficult to perform simple tasks, like dressing themselves. Judgment becomes poor. In summer they might wear clothes suited for winter. Numbers lose all meaning to them. Frequently, they become confused and suspicious. They no longer recognize the faces of close family members. The brains of those with Alzheimer’s shrink because brain cells are lost. With microscopic examination of an Alzheimer’s brain, deposits of amyloid, a protein material, are seen. They look like lumps of lava from a volcano, and they presumably kill off brain cells and block communication between them. Tangles of another protein called tau also are scattered through the brain. What leads to the formation of these proteins is as yet unknown. No medicine cures Alzheimer’s disease, but some medicines slow its progress. Three medicines increase the brain’s supply of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger that permits brain cells to communicate with each other. Those medicines are Aricept (donepezil), Exelon (rivastigmine) and Razadyne (galantamine). Namenda (memantine) is a fourth medicine that works in a different way.The booklet on Alzheimer’s disease discusses this prevalent illness in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 903W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.***

LINCOLN MEMORIAL (continued):cirillis were also responsible for creating the two enormous sculpted lions in front of the New York City Public Library.) If the giant Lincoln were able to stand up, he would be 28 feet (8.5 m) tall. Above Lincoln’s likeness is an inscribed epitaph, “In this temple, as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the Union, the mem-ory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever.”• Adding to the height of Lincoln’s statue is an oblong pedestal of Tennessee marble, and an-other marble platform beneath the pedestal, which increase the height by another 10.5 feet (3.2 m). • When the monument was dedicated on Memorial Day, 1922, by President Warren Harding, Lincoln’s only remaining son, Rob-ert Todd Lincoln, age 79, was in attendance. Ranked seventh on the “List of America’s Favorite Architecture,” the Lincoln Memo-rial receives about 6 million visitors annually.

NO-NO’SWe all know that a no-no is something we shouldn’t do – it may even be forbidden! But there are plenty of other words that are “no-“ words that bear looking in to. Here are some unusual terms, all beginning with those same two letters. • About 3.6% of American adults have engaged in noctambulism in the past year. Simply put, they have sleepwalked! This condition is more prevalent in children, aged 6 to 12, and more often with boys. Although the exact cause is not known, it can be heightened by stress, fa-tigue, and sleep deprivation. 3. When was the last time before 2011 that the Detroit Lions made the NFL playoffs?4. Name the last team to go undefeated for the regular season in men’s Division I college basketball.5. How many consecutive seasons have the Detroit Red Wings tallied at least 100 points in the standings?6. When was the last time before 2012 that the U.S. finished 1-2 in the men’s Olympic decathlon?7. Who is the only PGA golfer since Tiger Woods to win at least one tournament in each of his first five years out of college?

It can be tempting to look for cheaper sources of prescriptions drugs, but going online to hunt for your drugs is not the answer. The risks of dealing with online pharmacies are serious. If you get a fake drug, it will contain the wrong ingredients, and they’ll likely be harmful to you. You might get a bad reaction that sends you to the hospital. If nothing else, your condition could worsen, since you won’t be getting the medicine you need.Drugs from a fake pharmacy might not have any label at all, and no instructions on how to take them. You’ll have no contact with a local pharma-cist who can track your prescriptions for adverse interactions. In short, you’ll receive the medicine (real, or not) and nothing more.

Fake Pharmacies Lurk Online

The signs of a fake online pharmacy are: No pre-scription required. Prices are cheap. It ships any-where in the world. You get spam email. It’s not in the United States. It’s not licensed. Remember: Anyone can put up a website that looks genuine. To learn how to avoid a rogue online pharmacy, the Food and Drug Administration has just launched a new website, BeSafeRx (www.FDA.gov/BeSafeRx). Go online and watch the short videos. Call the FDA at 1-888-463-6332 for more information. The Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites (VIPPS) is one way to check whether an online pharmacy is legitimate [www.nabp.net]. You can check out the pharmacist by going to the BeSaf-eRx website. Click on Know Your Online Phar-macy. Click on the map of the state and search for the company and the pharmacist to make sure both are licensed.Update: The FDA has just ordered the operators of 4,100 websites to stop selling unapproved medications. But there are more still out there.

¥ If you grew up during a certain era in the United States, you are probably familiar with the board game Parcheesi. If you have a par-ticularly good memory, you may recall that the

game’s subtitle is “The Royal Game of India.” You may not realize, though, that the game is so-called because royalty in India used to play a life-size version of the game in gardens spe-cially designed for the pursuit. Centuries ago, rajas would dress members of their harems in brightly colored costumes and use them as game pieces.

¥ Everyone knows that a sophomore is some-one in his or her second year of high school or college. Most people don’t realize, though, that the word is derived from the Greek words “sophos,” which means “wise,” and “moros,” which means “stupid.”

¥ It’s not unusual for music critics and the art-ists they critique to butt heads, but they usually do it in print, not in person. In 1978, though,

the staff of Rolling Stone magazine and the band the Eagles went head-to-head in a soft-ball match. The writers ended up losing to the rock stars.

¥ Having trouble with your teenager? It’s a worldwide problem, it seems -- though not al-ways for the same reasons. In 2004, a 13-year-old boy in India ran away from home, declared that he was a Hindu holy man and founded a monastery. His parents arranged for him to be kidnapped and brought back home.***Thought for the Day: “Life is not a spectacle or a feast; it is a predicament.” -- George San-tayana

It might seem that the word takes it origin from “novice,” but the Spanish word for “young bull” is novillo.• Those who are notaphilists have the interest-ing hobby of collecting banknotes and paper currency, not to be confused with numismatists, who collect coins. You can ex-pect its effects to kick in within two to five minutes, with an average duration of one to one-and-a-half hours. It’s the oldest man-made anesthetic. Prior to its invention, den-tists actually used cocaine as anesthetic! For ex-ample, a nosocomial infection is one that a patient picks up during a hospital stay, such as a fungal or bacterial infection.
