Dear readers,

A year has passed since we first started theCITY, and it has been quite the journey for us. We met many interesting char-acters, worked with many amazing individuals and managed to sponsor several successful events. We're quite thankful, and of course this wouldn't have happened without the dedi-cation of our readers. Our readers not only receive the mag-azine as an audience, but they also contribute to making it with us. We have an open-door policy with our readers -- they come in with their suggestions and input, and they partici-pate in creating content. That's one of the things we're very proud of here at theCITY.

We are making a few changes and tweaks in our upcoming is-sues. We've made the layout a bit more easy on the eye, and we're including several new writers in the magazine's future issues. Of course there is plenty more, but we'll let you know in the right time.

Thank you for sharing our success. We wouldn't have been able to succeed if it wasn't for having a wonderful audience just like yourself.

Kind regards,

Khaled Al-Qahtani

10A Wonderful World

Zain, the leading telecommunications company in Kuwait, announced the launch of its 2013 environmental campaign; one that is in line with its strategy to preserve natural resources and promote education about the environment. Zain’s environmental campaign is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility towards the Kuwaiti community. The environmental campaign was launched to encourage employees and customers to enhance their lifestyles and enjoy living in a positive, healthy, and safe way, highlighting methods of conserving environmental and energy resources through the implementation of the ‘Three Rs’, referring to Reusing, Reducing, and Recycling resources used in day-to-day life. To highlight its environmental commitment to the wider public, Zain uses biodegradable, recyclable bags across its branches in Kuwait rather than using regular plastic bags. The company has also turned its attention to the technological aspect of environmental awareness by reducing the use of printed paper and replacing it with the use of electronic information. In support of this significant cause, Zain launched its environmental awareness campaign on its YouTube channel during the month of April. The channel features a video entitled ‘A Greener World is a Wonderful World’, which highlights the negative habits practiced by employees, including excessive use of water and tissue paper. The video identifies ways to substitute these negative habits with more resource-conserving ones, thus enhancing people’s overall understanding of environmental responsibility with respect to the use of energy, electricity, and other resources.

Zain Goes Green For a Wonderful World!

Page 13: Issue 12

11

Zain has also organized a number of events in support of its environmental initiatives; one of which was an internal activity entitled ‘Green Diwaniya’. This initiative targeted employees, allowing them to identify safer environmental solutions through several innovative workshops aimed at helping them to make smarter, more environmentally conscious choices. The workshops and activities included an Origami workshop presented by a Zain employee, a marine conservation presentation by the Kuwait Society for the Protection of Animals and their Habitat (K’S PATH), two internal competitions centered on recycling/reusing/reducing, and an interactive green photography session with employees. As part of its leading role in corporate social responsibility in Kuwait, Zain explained that preserving the environment is one of its core duties in the Kingdom, and that its environmental campaign reinforces its interest in and support of efforts to develop sustainable environmental programs. Zain is keen to raise further awareness across all segments of society and to ultimately raise consciousness of the issues within the whole society. It is worth mentioning that Zain has implemented other environmental initiatives in the past. Over the years, the company has been keen to implement ways to reduce the negative impact its activities have on the environment, and has devised activities and products that abide by international environmental conservation standards. Zain has played a pioneering role in spreading environmental awareness in Kuwait as well as within other markets in which it operates.Zain is firmly committed to its corporate social responsibility program, supporting community related causes and launching unique initiatives to help create a better tomorrow for everyone.

@marsvenuskuwait

I am so happy to meet with you once again during this special month. May 2013 marks the one year anniversary of “the City” magazine. I am so happy to have started with them from the beginning and I am so proud of all members of the magazine’s family and wish them all continued success. Success is such powerful force. Many of you may want to achieve suc-cess and accomplish your heart’s desire but you man not really know the way. As a success coach, I feel that success stories have a large impact on success. I often encourage my clients to read and learn about other people’s success. Every person has a story. I too have a story to how I ended up here and would love to share with you what I have learned along the way.

1. Having faith in God. I believe in the guidance of God. I believe that your path is prede-termined by God and it is our job to enjoy the adventure of finding it. I believe in doing my best and then leaving the rest to a higher force. I learned through some pretty rough experiences that, in life, we are not really in control of everything, in fact, we are not in con-trol of anything. Trying to control our future, and assuming we know, best is such a huge weight on us to bear. If you are at a point in your life where you are at a crossroads or going through a rough patch, breathe, and remember that everything is in God’s hands and wor-rying will only make your face wrinkle and destroy your health. Who wants that? Not me. Have faith. 2. Never Underestimate the Power of an Education. As a child who grew up in a household which encouraged learning and educational success, I found comfort in knowledge. If I did not under-stand how or why certain things happened, I found solace in educa-tion and knowledge. I encourage you to learn and understand the situation of your life. My break came by reading a seemingly innocent book, “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus” a while ago. Although I had heard about this book before, upon reading it, I felt that book was different. Through self education I began my path to being an internationally licensed business/life coach. I am so proud to say that I was the first in the GCC and the proud owner of this franchise here in Kuwait.

You may be the type who loves to read. If this is the case, great! If not, maybe you should think about your life. Jim Rohn says, "Formal edu-cation will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune." Which do you want?

3. Have Faith in Your Skills. Do you know who your biggest adversary is? This person is always with you and follows your every footstep. This person finds the per-

fect moment to sabotage your efforts and knows exactly what to say to make you fall flat on your face. Do you know who this person is? It’s you! As humans, we have a natural tendency to get in our own way. So, here’s an idea, get out of your own way. We have this audio recording of certain phrases that we say to ourselves over and over again. The repetition of these toxic phrases will affect your confi-dence levels and your success. If you are saying phrases like “I am so stupid” or “I cannot” or “I hate” all day, you will definitely negatively affect your life. Fill your thoughts with positive reinforcing phrases like ‘I am smart” or “I can” or “I love”. When you say positive things to yourself over and over again, this will create an ease within yourself which is bound to make your life much better and more optimistic.

4. Plan. Visualize. Expect. On your path towards excellence and success, you need to have some idea of where your destination is. For me, I have achieved many things through planning along with the power of suggestion through visu-alization. Visualization is a powerful technique of felling you have achieved your goal prior to anything actually materializing. For those who just plan without visualization, its like ordering food through a menu vs. ordering food that you can smell and see right in front of you. The menu doesn’t really show you anything beyond a picture per-haps or a description of the dish. Those who only plan are sometimes sadly disappointed in achieving their goal. Some may believe that this goal will make me happy but ends up not to do anything. Visualization allows a person to ensure that what they are planning is really what they want to achieve and will provide them with the perceived results. Try it. You will love it. The imaginary world of possibility is so refresh-ing and can change your whole perspective on life.

5. Help Those Who Need Help.On your path to success, you may find yourself busy. You might find yourself too busy to smile, too busy to waste your time on people who may not help you on your path to success. You never know how your 5 minutes of help to anyone will positively affect their life and even yours. God works in mysterious ways. I will not begin to tell you of my chance meetings which positively affected my life as a result of helping those who needed a hand. I regularly hold free information seminars to help those who need some guidance. Additionally, I have a morning show on Tuesday morning on KTV1 where I guide the view-ers to the best ways to achieve happiness and success in their lives. So, go beyond the bare minimum and care. People will remember and its good Karma! Dearest readers, hope my life lessons will brighten your path. I wish you all the happiness and success in your lives. I would love to hear your stories and successes, connect with me!

Social Media CSR Top Contributions to Society

Most of us use some form of social media every day – and whether it’s for personal communication, self-promotion or marketing, we use it religiously ... don’t we , All Humans are creatures of habit, but they’re also opinionated and impatient :)Those two traits alone are the reasons why social networks thriving where People want the news fast and they want to talk about it now!!Technological advancements have made it easier for people to express themselves and relay news through social media platforms. But many people tend to focus on the supposed negative effects of social media and forget about the good.Instead of focusing on social media’s pitfalls and absurdities, let me remind you how its influence transforms society for the better. Here are five major contributions that social media has made to society:It’s a forum for support and safety information during a crisis. There have been several recent disasters during which social media provided the only viable venue for communication. During Superstorm Sandy, most people didn’t have power, but some cell networks and WiFi towers were still opera-tional. Many people used Facebook to detail the destruction and reassure friends or family that they were safe. This week, the tragic Boston Marathon bombings mobilized the worldwide social media community to offer support and info for those affected. Twitter even donated a promoted hashtag (value estimated at $200,000), #OneBoston, to lend support to victims, according to Ad Week. More importantly, networks like Twitter proved to be a safety tool for people in the area. The Boston Police Department tweeted up-to-the-minute news describing injuries, death tolls and areas to avoid. In an ef-fort to keep phone lines clear, police asked people to use social media to communicate. It’s the best-yet way to connect across vast distances. Many of us are now able to once again connect with friends and relatives from far and wide without having to waste money paying for international phone calls. I can reconnect with people I met from Australia and South Africa. I can see their pictures and take a glimpse into their life, and it’s nice to have a way to check in on their updates when I can’t physically be there myself – it’s the perfect complement to other communication formats like email and Skype. It revolutionized brand engagement. Social media transformed the market-ing industry. A new BIA/Kelsey report says social media ad revenue will reach $11 billion by 2017!!!!Brands have the ability to personally engage with customers like never be-fore and it’s showing in sales.People like to see brands respond when they comment on a Facebook post or mention the company in a tweet. The use of social media to handle the bulk of customer service inquiries is slowly becoming standard practice. Interaction fuels sales and social media agencies know that it is the key to brand success in a digital world.

A graduate of Interior Design From American University of Sharjah she also holds an MBA from Kuwait Maastricht Busi-ness School which has enabled in honing her business acumen. Having been nurtured in a fam-ily business environment, Farah has acquired an independent & entrepreneurial outlook. Her initial foray into the business was by instituting Presentation Art, an Architectural Illustra-tion Service provider. However

as her feet got firmer & the company established itself, she embarked on a new journey by founding her other Company, Interior Art, an Interior Design Build firm. This specialized stu-dio has catered to Commercial, Residential and Hospitality sectors in the Middle East by providing dedicated services like space planning, interior ar-chitecture design and furniture designing, planning & selection. The launch Of “Pieces By Farah” in 2011 was yet another dream come true. A Multi faceted individual, Farah loves the excitement sur-rounding her endeavor. “Pieces By Farah is a step I de-cided to take in pursuit of cre-ating engaging, functional & unique hand crafted furniture pieces. Mixing philosophies & techniques that derive from the modern & classical approaches, is what spurs the final pieces to come out as innovative & unpre-dictable as they are.” “Pieces, as a concept was evolved out of the need to create multifunctional pieces that are adaptable & useful for tight spaces. The intention was just not to create an artistically beautiful piece but also func-tional that made sense to the space constraint. The focus was

on exploring form & function’s of each piece to gather their di-verse application than what one would see at a glance. I sought to create pieces that are practi-cal & serviceable to newlyweds who live in apartments and these pieces in turn unveil their versatility & resourcefulness while entertaining guest’s.” “Pieces” as already mentioned, is a functional mix of furniture’s that lets you to customize each piece as per ones taste. The beauty being each piece comes with 4 pallets and each pallet has over 12 options to custom-ize from, resulting in creating hundreds of unique pieces. Our Product ranges from Furni-ture, Lighting to Home Accesso-ries. One rule that Pieces By Farah strictly ad-here to at the time of concep-tion of any pieces is to ensure its functional & customizable ability. Sticking on to this line of tactic the home accessories has a range that can be arranged to suits ones need.

What is Think Tank Institute?Think Tank is an IT training institute with a new teaching philosophy. We are not going to recite text books, or provide replays of youtube; students can do that on their own. We will make sure that our workshops will be well communicated to the hungry minds, in a very creative way.

Who are the founders and managers, and what is their background? Our godfather Mr Abdulaziz Al Rushaid is a self taught IT guru.He actually adores IT books, and is a huge fan of Apple technology and gadgets. And then there's me, with my MBA and local market experience. Think Tank Institute is managed by myself. I like to think of myself as the artist, along with my league of extraordinary men. The godfather Mr Abdulaziz is our bodyguard, the internationally certified programmer Mr Abdallah Taha, our consigliere, a real ACE (Adobe Certified Expert) Mr Mohammad Salah, and our full-time superhero part-time human Mr Jassim Hasan.

When did you decide to establish Think Tank Institute?Mr Abdulaziz's passion for knowledge ignited the need of transferring Think Tank Institute from papers to real world. He is eager to learn what's real (skills that can be used for local market), what's cool (skills only geeks would appreciate), and what only matters.

What do you offer at Think Tank Institute?Right now we only offer two set of programs, designing and programming. Our aim is to focus on building teams of well informed coders and artists, by communicating best practices of each career. We are planning to provide two more sets of programs of which they are being cooked by our little princesses and chefs. Most local corporation make profits then, they work on their CSR (corporate social responsibility) Think Tank Institute is doing CSR first! We provide free courses on how to use your iDevice (iPhone, iPad, and iPod) and your Mac (MacBook Air or Pro, Mac mini, iMac, Mac Pro)

Who are you targeted clients?Entrepreneurs who would like to boost their knowledge, geeks who would like to do cooler projects, Managers who would like to elevate their professional skills, and Smart kids from 8 years old.

Who can benefit from Think Tank Institute?Everybody. Experts, amateurs youngsters, moms, dads, granmas and granpas,

Do you have any advice to young ambitious people? Never hold information always share it, and learn what only matters.

An IT training institute that takes teaching to heart, Think Tank Institute is a passionate establishment that focuses on indulging students and immersing them into the experience of learning. We paid them a visit to learn more about what they offer, and spoke to the deputy managing director Mubarak Al-Hmoud.

Tell us a little bit about your background. What did you study and what do you do now?I studied Industrial and Management Engineering in Kuwait Uni-versity. Six months before my graduation in I worked in summer program which was an amazing experience for me as I met lots of people that opened plenty of job opportunities for me. My men-tor, Shamlan al Bahar, gave me an offer to establish a marketing and pr company back in 2010. It was very challenging to work in a field that you are not familiar with. I start learning many things, worked on too many CSR projects such as “the Protégés” and lots more projects from big ones to small ones. After that, we estab-lished “Someday” which is cafe and retail shop. I used to always have troubles on finding the best place that serves the freshest food, fruits and good sandwiches with fresh ingredients and that is how we came up with Someday cafe.. Do you work more than one job? For now, I am working full time on Someday Café. What are the challenges that faced you before you start your own business? The challenges that I had before we started with the business, mainly consists of the paper works and the legal documents that you need from the government. It's frustrating that for every single thing that you need to process you are going to need a "wasta" to finish it, and anything else can be done. Other than that I guess everywhere you have pros and cos. How did you overcome the obstacles that you faced as an entrepreneur? When you have your own business it's very different from be-ing an employee. You worry, a lot and you’re always under stress because you have to manage employees, which is very difficult especially when you’re young and have never experienced any-thing the same before. This can cause plenty of pressure and with time I learned how to control the stress and not mixing it with my personal life. I learned that if you know how to plan ahead, noth-ing can stand in your way, for long to say the least. What are your future plans? My plan is to make “Someday” not only a café, but a lifestyle. Do you have any advice for entrepreneurs who want to start their own business?Always do what you love. Never wake up in the morning and go to a place you don't like or work for a job you don't like. Life is too short to waste it in things that you don't like doing.

We knew Dana as a graduate from one of the most re-nowned youth programs in Kuwait. Shamlan Al-Bahar, her mentor, is a young Kuwaiti entrepreneur of whom we are very proud, and it gives us such great pride to see that one of his proteges is making such a big success in her career. This is our chitchat with the inspiring Dana al-Otaibi.

Dr Georges Aouad D.D.S, D.E.S, Pediatric DentistryBayan Dental Clinic

One of the greatest fears of a person is going to the den-tist. It take a lot of patience and skill in dealing with pa-tients especially children. Being a pediatric dentist you must first understand how and children feel whenever they hear the word “dentist”. With this in mind, you have established trust and confidence in children that will re-main for the rest of their lives.

First visit usually begins when the tooth comes in usu-ally between 6 and 12 months. Early examination and preventative care will protect your child’s smile now and in the future. Prevention is the most important thing in children. Caries are a big concern which usually starts from using baby bottles to introducing solid foods that cause erupted teeth to decay. Sleeping with and drink-ing juices from a bottle should be avoided instead let your child drink it in a cup. Weaning should start at 12 months.

Before a child’s teeth erupt, their gums will swell and they become irritated. Using a piece of gauze or a cloth wrapped in your finger, gently rub their gums. This pro-cedure doesn’t just clean the teeth but it eases the dis-comfort and pain they are experiencing. As the teeth begin to appear you can now start to use a small headed

toothbrush with little or without toothpaste, however a toothpaste with fluoride is always best.

Brushing in front of your children is the best encourage-ment you can give them. Assistance can be given until they can control themselves and effectively clean their teeth.

Fluoride is used to prevent and control teeth decay which is proven to be safe and effective. With regular visits the dentist will determine when a child needs fluoride sup-plement. It is usually given every 6 months upon consid-ering the factors when the child should receive fluoride.

At the age of 6 permanent teeth begin to erupt. The first molars are usually hard to reach when brushing and that’s where the most cavities are found.

These teeth have tiny grooves and pits where food usu-ally gathers and if they are not cleaned correctly this may lead to cavities. Therefore sealants must be applied.

Regular dental visits of every 6 months is a must for chil-dren and adults. The specialist will assess the changes and give instructions on how to take care of your child’s teeth and maintain a healthy smile.

Family: The Unique Things for Which I Am

Grateful

I am not sure if you realize that it has been a year since I’ve been given the honor of presenting various views on matters of health we believe to be important to those living in Kuwait. Based on this, each member of theCity family was asked to present unique aspect/aspects of their lives, as a way of celebrating our indi-vidual, and thus combined, achievements. To this end, I wish to present a pair of personal and recent achievements for which I am eternally grateful.

The first of these achievements relates to my career. As you may or may not know, my major focus for, the past decade, has been research into developing ways to improve human health. Five years ago I had an epiphany if you will. At that time I had just fin-ished developing a telemedicine system that would be integrat-ed into the Caribbean Cardiac Association myocardial infarction (heart attack) intervention units. While presenting this work at a confence and chatting with a colleague it dawned on me that the idea I was presenting could only provide major benefit to indi-viduals that are already suffering. But, I actually wanted to help a wider spectrum of people - people that have life threatening or debilitating ailments and those who are expected to develop such problems in the future. This realization spawned my inter-est in genetics, as this field is anticipated to revolutionize the practice of medicine with the promise of actual disease cures and pre-treatments that can actually prevent disease develop-ment. Now switching back to the present, I can proudly say that at the begining of May 2013, our research group at the Indiana University School of Medicine filed a US patent for the discovery and development of our gene-based therapy. We began work on this project three years ago, and the combined strategy we pro-duced is anticipated to provide a novel way to study, treat and perhaps prevent kidney disease in the setting of drug toxicity, cardiac impairment and diabetes.

My second achievement also relates to medicine, but in this in-stance has an even more intimate root. This achievement is the conception of my first child, with the love of my life. My wife and I are truly blessed to have been given this gift, which we aim to cherish for an eternity. So, in sum, I merely want to present two events in my life for which I’m truly grateful, as well to thank you for taking the time across this past year to read our articles and I look forward to serving you better in the near and distant future.

Food is the epitome of our existence it is what our body thrives on to function and survive. You can either work with it and love what you eat smartly and in moderation and reap the amazing benefits food has to offer to our body, or you can abuse it and gorge down every-thing that comes in sight and wake up bloated the next day. Diet isn’t about horrible tasting “specific” food; on the contrary it is about mod-eration and variety.

Let’s start at the very beginning, what is good nutrition? Generally, good nutrition means eating the correct types of food (variety) in the right amounts (moderation) at the right time of day (timing) to op-timize overall health during the days, months and years of your life.

Going to a nutritionist means different things for different people with different goals. For the young newly engaged girl it could mean frantic last minute attempts to look exceptionally slimmed down and radiant for her wedding; for an athlete who is required to maintain a consistent level of performance it means fueling their body with en-ergy and sustaining lean muscle mass. For some who have a family history of disease, nutrition is a super tool for prevention against dif-ferent cancers, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, osteoporosis, or even mi-graine headaches to name a few. However, for the majority going to a nutritionist is a wide-ranging call for help, finding a way to shed the kilograms, cleansing away all those years of bad eating, a total mind body makeover. That is the fun part! Knowing that food can really in-fluence you inside out!

The past decade has brought about a vortex of information regard-ing nutrition, where do you start. Well first you have the Macronutri-ents which are your basic essentials: water, carbohydrates, fats, and protein. Then you have your Micronutrients: vitamins and minerals, these are what I like to call, the *superheroes* of good nutrition. Sub-sequently, within these micronutrients comes a vast array of colorful nutrients that are essential to the proper functioning of our body, a treasure box. Open that box; pick a jewel, each jewel (nutrient) has a purpose that benefits our body.

Your body’s needs are as unique to you as your fingerprint; no two people have the same requirements. The first step is to identify your individual needs; the second step is to identify the cause, the third step is to make sure you are getting the correct nutrients in the exact amounts to meet your needs. For example (this is case specific, every-one’s needs are different):

Needs: hair strengthening and radiant skinCause: lack of hair and skin specific protein, stress, possible hormone imbalanceRequirements: silica, tryptophan, biotin, B6, ACE, omega 7, cysteine Food: chia seeds, wholegrains, salmon, lean beef, cucumbers, flax-seed, avocado oil, wheat germ As I tell all my lovely clients, excellent nutrition is not all about diets and calorie counts; is a complete lifestyle package, wrapped up in a multi-hued bow of healthy choices! It is your own individual power tool, for whatever needs you have. This is what The Healthy Body Diet *HBD* is all about, it is your per-sonalized diet to a healthy you. So let’s start! Just in time for Summer! Positive change, is always good!

This wonderful cafe is a perfect blend of modern and old. The decoration is authentic and Kuwaiti, as well as the food. They offer a variety of Kuwaiti dishes that are all-time favorites.

At first sight, I wondered, “Why a gorilla with a silver crown?” Come along, let’s take this journey together.Shuffle Restaurant is a cozy multi-patterned and an unusually designed concept, which I fell in love with instantly!!ust like the colors inside the Shuffle Restau-rant changed, the flavors I got to taste here also were varied. I would like to thank this unique restaurant for the invitation and for all the dishes they kept surprising me with. It was an excellent experience.

Golnar is an Iranian restaurant that takes its name from the Farsi language and means ‘pomegranate flower.’ The restaurant con-sists of two floors and the kitchen is on the ground floor. With its open concept, clients can watch as their food is being prepared by the kitchen staff, and the great ventilation system works incredibly to keep you from smelling like a kitchen apron.

Located in the elegant Safir Residences Fin-tas, Al Roshinah is a Kuwaiti restaurant that offers an unparalleled authentic Kuwaiti din-ing experience. As I walked inside the restaurant I was amazed by the wonderful ambience. It’s the right bal-ance between traditional and modern decor. I was welcomed by the restaurant manager and the chef, who served me dates and Arabic coffee, a customary and warm welcome. The restaurant has a clay oven for baking bread, located behind a glass wall. I asked if I can take a closer look. The warm smell of bread was very welcoming and enticing, I wanted to stay there longer but I was starving and I had food to review!

I’ll spare you the details about the fantastic decor that transforms you to a restaurant in an Italian neighborhood, and I’ll get straight to business. The lovely staff prepared a special menu for this column. We started with the drinks, four fruit cocktails with fizzy soda and real fruits. My favorite was the watermelon mojito, very refreshing! The mushroom soup is excep-tional, like nothing I’ve tasted before and the salads were absolutely yummy. I loved the cheese salad which comes with halloumi cheese and grilled veggies. The warm aspara-gus salad is another story, the dressing on that salad is just phenomenal!

@newsburger

Who said one cannot enjoy ice cream in winter? It’s certainly one of my guilty pleasures. Besides, you have to be realistic; some winter days are relatively warm, so sitting outdoors as the cool breeze blows and in the sunlight while eating some a scoop of gelato is just per-fect as a compliment for the day. I heard about the opening of Scoop A Cone, a Kuwaiti cafe that offers gelato and snacks, in a new location in Salmiya’s Aknan Towers. I headed there, and I can easily say that it has become one of my favorite spots now.

I stumbled upon News Burger, a love-ly teeny tiny place tucked in Jabriya. You won’t think that such a small place with only four tables and three people working inside is capable of producing such a delicious appetiz-ing smell and finger-licking great burgers. The decoration is just fantastic, grey walls with big prints of first pages from international newspapers with the most unforgettable news.

I have been an avid follower of An-gelatto on Instagram. Their picture of the chocolate fountain was always one of my major weaknesses. I could almost smell the warm aroma of cho-clate just by looking at the picture. Recently I was invited to a dinner, and decided to take dessert form there. The trip to Angelatto was to-tally worthwhile! The name of the place combines the words Angel and Gelatto, and indeed the gelattos are angelic/heavenly!

Karak House offers more than just a traditional drink. Karak -- or kadak tea -- is derived from the Indian dia-lect and it means strong tea, basical-ly. But it has come to mean strongly brewed tea that is then mixed with milk and spices and boiled again. The flavor of the spices is intense, and it’s one of the most delicous and sooth-ing drinks. It’s a winter drink for sure, and it certainly brings back memories of old times to many people.

How many of you is in love with Spanish food? I’m sure many of us tried the delicious food that the cuisine of Spain offers, and I’m sure many have their own favorites, but not many know that they can have a delicious Spanish meal here in Kuwait. Did you know that? Go to Bubo’s.

Throughout the first year of theCITY, I vis-ited some of the best eateries around Kuwait. There are so many op-tions that cater for each and every taste, from ethnic cuisines to dessert bars and cafes. There are also many take-out options and home-based businesses which are truly unique and definitely worth checking out. I wish all these businesses all the best in their fu-ture, and I hope that I have helped you make up your mind on where to eat next!

Ladies looking for stunning and eclectic accessories and clothes will have to look no further; it can all be found at Sharak Warak, Think of it as a wardrobe curated carefully by the unique Hababa Al-Sabah. With vibrant colors and im-pressive deigns, it’s really one of the most unique places to shop in Kuwait. Here is our chat with Hababa, the girl behind this lovely project.

What is Sharak Warak? It's a trendy fashion boutique that's related, but not limited, to cloth-ing. We have an array of accessories, paintings, and furniture pieces.

When did you begin the project, and what does the name mean? When did your passion for fashion start? The project began a little over a year ago, with its name taken from a traditional Kuwaiti song where a young girl asks her traveling father to bring her back many gifts and presents. My passion for arts in gen-eral, drawing and photography specifically, started at a young age and developed over the years to put me where I'm at right now. I've taken to fashion designing recently, and my brand (Breem) will see the light in the coming weeks, but we've got some designs to showcase exclu-sively for The City

How do you choose what is sold at Sharak Warak? To be honest, everything I like is sold at the store. Sharak Warak isn't limited to certain items, it's the result of my experiences, be it locally or abroad. There you'll find clothes, accessories, paintings, traditional wears, and selected furniture pieces among others.

Did Sharak Warak participate in any exhibitions?ptbkuwaiti We've participated in the Proud 2 Be Kuwaiti exhibition, and it was a clear turning point for the store.

What are your future plans for Sharak Warak?Expansion for sure. We're currently working on our website, to make it possible to browse and buy online, and the actual store itself.

How can people buy from Sharak Warak?Currently, orders are made through calls, but soon they will be able to browse all designs and place orders online, or just visit the shop.

In the end, I'd like to thank Ms. Lana AlResheed for her continuous support for small businesses and for always highlighting them in her remarkable magazine

Turkish Accessories

Nouf [email protected]

@nafnoof

Before couple of weeks, I had a short escape to Istanbul and discovered a lot of amazing jew-elry shops there, and since I truly appreciate beautiful jewelry, I decided to write about the Turk-ish modern jewelry and the ones that I admired the most, the Ot-toman styles jewelry.

Jewelry design has been an im-portant part of Turkey’s history for 5000 years and till now. Otto-man jewelry was extremely color-ful, with jewelers using a variety of metals in each piece. The use of multiple materials differenti-ates Turkish designs from most European jewelry, which is typi-cally crafted from a single metal, usually silver or gold, to a lot of matte finish gold and silver plat-ting used in the rings, cuffs, neck-laces and earrings, which looks very elegant and is very practical yet trendy for everyday wear.

Most of the eye catching Turk-ish jewelry resemble the his-torical jewelry and accessories worn during the Ottoman era, yet modernized and customized with precious and semi precious

stones to achieve new styles, and that's what is making them really special.

In addition to the natural stones that makes the Ottoman jew-elry special, the evil eye and the Hamsa hand always add a Turk-ish identity to the pieces. Strict symmetry and balance is another signature of Ottoman-influenced designs, often mirroring the nat-ural geometry of the gemstones used.

Where some of the jewelry pieces got the inspiration by the famous Turkish kaftans which were worn by the Ottoman sultans, you can find also other pieces that were inspired by some of the most im-portant historical places in Tur-key like the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia Church, and the Topkapi Palace.

Turkey’s fashion jewelry pro-duction is growing rapidly and has become a new and strong competitor to the most famous brands of european fashion jew-elry.

To me it was a dream that came true because of hard work and the help of God, yes it was very difficult to plan & organize all that hard work , finiding the right professional experts in the field of Fashion coming from Italy the capital of Global Fashion industry & USA wher you can find Modern professional Fashion buisness developers , convence them to come to kuwait and look for Creativity in design and ideas , Thanks God they Trusted our vission & believed that they can make a defferent. We met Momo when he recently visited Kuwait, after spending most

of his adult life in Europe. A knowledgable person about his field and

a very dedicated young man, Momo managed to gain international

recognition for his work in styling and fashion. He moved back to Ku-

wait recently, and is considering sharing his knowledge and expertise

here. This is our quit chitchat with Momo.

Page 75: Issue 12

73

Can you talk to us a little but about your background?I am from Kuwait and moved when I was about 10 years old to Sweden / Stockholm. I grew up in cold Scandinavia where I started teaching myself Swedish and Norwegian fluently. I come from a big family with many brothers and sisters.

When did you start you career? The first time I was 17 years old and I started to design and style cloths for a school project. I redesigned clothes and designed new dresses for fun, and I styled some pics for models. There was a start of my pas-sion for the fashion.

Where did you study and where did you train?I remember that my father was not happy in fashion and would like to aline myself to a serious job, doctor, lawyer or journalist. I listened to him and studied 3 years in media communications / PR in high school in Sweden. After that, I followed my heart and looked up for differ-ent hairdresser or design schools and came in at Toni & guy hair sa-lon in Stockholm. There, I trained by the famous Steve Terry to be a hairdresser. My eyes were opened even more for fashion industry. I applied to many small and high stylist courses in art, fashion, makeup and hair. You are never fully trained in hairdressing, makeup or a styl-ist industry, etc. There is always more to learn.

What are the fashion shows you participated in worldwide?Wow, that's a lot of shows that I have attended but they include Oslo Fashion Week , Paris Fashion Week and many TV shows. I also launched a show during Roberto Cavalli’s visit to Oslo. It was fun. Today, I am re-sponsible for hair and makeup for the International Fashion Academy shows in Paris which are yearly during Couture Week in Paris and is one of Europe's best fashion design schools.

What inspires Momo?-For me as a fashion stylist, I can get inspiration from different sourc-es such locations, season colors, looking at different fashion shows or maybe a random person on the street. sometimes I can empty my head of insperation but when I'm traveling, I get always with new ideas and suggestions for my next project.

To succeed in the fashion industry is possible but difficult at the same time, you have experienced some adversities during your trip?-Obviously, I have been rejected over and over and faced many closed doors, but I always believed in myself and I always wanted to succeed even more.

Your job is quite exciting, and you must have met many fa-mous artists. Tell us, who have you met so far?-Well, they’re so many. I met Lady Gaga, Craig David, Leonardo Di-caprio, Thomas Cavalli to name a few. I was fortunate to get this op-portunity to have a chitchat with them and to receive compliments by them for the work I’ve done. But my biggest idol is my mother who has always been there for me and inspired me in my greatest projects.

Do you plan to launch a business in Kuwait? -I have met so many amazing people during my visit to Kuwait at theC-ITY Runway. And yes, I will be launching a modeling agency and collaborate with some great fashion magazines and Kuwaiti designers. I think it's time for me to discover my country which I have missed.

How can readers get in touch with you? They can view my website at www.by-momo.com or travel with me on @BYMOMO on instagram

Good quality, low prices and ex-cellent value ..

Turkey is a major producer of cot-ton and wool, and textile is one the main industries of the coun-try.

In general, the quality is excellent and prices are very reasonable compared to Europe and North America.

Turkey’s fashion designers are be-coming well known international-ly and many of the latest fashions can be found in local stores.

In Bodrum, there are many stores to choose from offering a range of clothing from inexpensive to high end, you will also find many familiar brands on offer. Even the local markets have a great variety of clothing but as with anywhere quality may not be as reliable as the stores.

Skating Fun!

The Touristic Enterprises Company organized a fun day out for radio stars from Marina FM 88.8, Talal Malik, Hmoud Al-Amir and Salman Al-Nejadi.

This fun and exciting event took place in the beginning of May as part of TEC's new marketing campaign. The TEC decided that rewarding the well-loved radio DJs for their hard work with a fun day at the skating rink will be quite a fun experience, and indeed it was.

theICTY Magazine was invited to attend this fun experience and document it. As summer is nearing, spending time in-doors in a climate-controlled skating rink is definitely a great idea. Don't forget to check out the skating rink!

We’re very proud of extraor-dinary Kuwaiti achievements, and one of the creative con-cepts that was initiated here before moving towards be-ing an international hit in the world of comics. Dr Nayef Al-Mutawa’s The 99, super-heroes inspired by the Arabic words of THE 99 attributes of Allah moved from being a creative concept to a big and successful international franchise. We at theCITY will be introducing your youth readers to characters from THE 99 every month. Find out more about THE 99 on the99kids.com

Real Name: Miklos SzekelyhidiHome Country: Hungary Age: 13 Height: 175 cmWeight: 71 kg Eye Color: Green-Blue Hair Color: Dark Brown Base of Operation: THE 99 Steps Foundation, Seville, Spain

Character Profile:

Miklos Szekelyhidi was born to overachieving parents who gave him little attention and love, but who granted Miklos two incred-ible gifts: a superior, genius-level intelligence and a family heir-loom locket that, unbeknownst to them, would allow that intel-ligence to grow exponentially.

In his early years of schooling, Miklos was a socially underde-veloped child, possibly autistic. He was often bullied by his class-mates. Eventually recognized as a child prodigy, he was transferred to the Nahomtech Robotics Re-search facility in Hungary, where he lived and studied from ages 7-13. Miklos’s studies blossomed, but he remained poor at interact-ing with people, and to this day he remains more comfortable among machines and robotic gadgets. He has an odd speech pattern and an erratic listening pattern.

Through the use of his Noor Stone, Miklos is able to intuitively “see” the derivations, blueprints and foundations of any existing or potential machine. He creates mental schematics that appear as complex holographic blueprints around him. He is also able to use

his self-created Tekjacket to as-semble them.

Mikilos will always remain a loner; the other members of THE 99 tolerate his frequent lack of tact, but he isn’t close to anyone. He often complains about the other members of the team not allow-ing him to concentrate. He talks frequently to himself and to vari-ous imaginary friends, including a giant bespectacled teddy bear called Doo-Hickey who acts as Ja-mi’s sounding board and assistant on difficult projects.

Jami also engages in a constant battle of wills with Zoran Kry-zneski, THE 99’s trainer. Zoran appreciates Jami’s intelligence and the equipment he’s created in the training bunker; but Ja-mi’s short attention span often leads him to leave his work half-finished, which infuriates Zoran. Yet, paradoxically, Zoran is prob-ably closer to Jami than anyone else.

Powers:Intuitive engineering and elec-tronics genius. Is able to make hundreds of dif-ferent types of devices that at-tach to his Tekjacket.

Today we will introduce you to the most amazing father in the world, who has a special hobby. He is a drag races since 2000, but been involved with cars since the age of 16. A mechanic love, and enjoys tuning cars.

We lived our whole life with a racer and a speed lover so we were able to cheer for him in his races and watch him win! Because we lived in this atmosphere for a very long time, we are always interested in car races. We also really enjoy watching car drifting, they are so exciting!

Our dad began joining local drag races in Kuwait and then started racing all around the GCC. In 2007 he bought a new chassis from the United States with a new engine, and took it to the next level. From 2007-2013 he accomplished races in the United States, Bahrain, UAE and his last stop was in Qatar. And now he became a tuner and a racing consulter for ford cars. Addicted to this hobby, he became a professional rider.

Our father decided to open up his own business of tuning and became one of the best SCI dealers in Kuwait. Now lets talk about some accomplishments

he has made. First of all he always dreamt of doing something different and special, so he started with a black convertible mustang in 1991 and was the first person in Kuwait to install a super charge to his car. From this moment on cars were no longer his hobby but his job.

In 2000 he began to build his very own and first drag racing car, but it was a very difficult road he chose to go through, because it was his first time to build a drag race chassis, and also that he used a super charge injected engine, and back then the Kuwaiti racers and experts used different engine category so it was difficult to deal with a new kind of engine, and no one really knew how to work with it. And at the same time he was the first to install and use standalone system in Kuwait, which is used to manage the air-fuel and the spark of the car.

All of what we were talking about introduced us to a different world which is hard for girls to enter, but once you get in…you wont want to leave;)

Fawaz Gruosi presents a new women’s timepiece collection as homage to beauty and colour. SUGAR is the very essence of femininity, transforming a watch into a luxurious sweet treat.

The moving gems create a free movement all around the watch leaving a sparklingcascade of the highest quality of precious stones in white diamonds, emeralds, orange or blue sapphires.

1. At de GRISOGONO, life inspires art… What inspired you to cre-ate this watch?I was having coffee and I saw an enchanting woman place a sugar cube in her cup which was set with stones. At that moment, I saw the watch. It was as simple as that…My vision began to create the pieces with various gem-stones, using diamonds, emeralds and orange or blue sapphires, all lending themselves to the sweet and rich texture of a sugar cube. This then led me to interpret the design in soft coloured mother of pearl.

2. How did you imagine the stones moving on the side of the watch?I wanted to add movement to this feminine watch. The women I create for are active and social, whether they are in jeans at a night club or in longgown at the opera. They are in perfect harmony with the moving gemstones.

3. de GRISOGONO is also known for its innovative and creative

side… How did you come up with the idea of gem-setting the back of the case as well as the buckle? The philosophy of de GRISOGONO’s timepieces, as far back as our first col-lection Instrumento No. Uno has been to incorporate the same philosophy as our jewellery creations. The masterpiece details of jewellery or a time-piece is what makes the collections wearable art. The back case setting is just one example of a hidden treasure that only the woman who wears it has the luxury of knowing. A little something just for herself…

4. de GRISOGONO is known for its use of colours, how important was it to offer a variety of colours?de GRISOGONO launched the company with the renowned black diamond, and then moved towards coloured gemstones, with specifically the mixture of a colourful palette. Today this trend can be seen throughout the jewellery world. SUGAR comes in four different stones to further bring vibrancy to ourcollections.

As usual, master tale spin-ner Archer artfully juggles multiple story lines while dis-pensing telling insights about how British parliamentary systems really work.

HOROSCOPESARIES (March 21 - April 20)A “Catch 22” situation arises and causes you frus-tration early in the month. Creative thinking could turn things around, however. Don’t be afraid to try the unusual. A Libra friend shows you the positive side. Cynicism slows you down. Financial prob-lems may arise later in the month.

GEMINI (May 22 - June 21)A Taurus from your past resurfaces. You’ll find the bull a little deeper than you remember. A mid-month break from your busy schedule brightens your mood. Don’t be afraid to give in to relaxation. It’s really not so bad! Scorpio plays a role. Decisive action is key this month.

CANCER (June 22 - July 22)You certainly will earn the title of “The Crab” this month. Everything will seem to get on your nerves. Try to remain calm and don’t take out your frustrations on co-workers. Go out to lunch, in-stead of eating in the office. Meeting some friends after work will help ease your tension.

LEO (July 23 - August 22)Keep a tight hold on valuables or something you love could be lost. This is especially true if you’re traveling this month. Try to make the best of a bad situation. Negative thinking makes matters worse. Staying focused helps you keep pace with a busy workload.

VIRGO (August 23 - September 23)Speaking up is the only way to make others aware of your frustrations. Keeping it all bottled in won’t help one bit. A flirtation at work could be a recipe for disaster. Know what you’re getting into before flashing that smile. Leo is involved. A good time to get in touch with old friends.

LIBRA (September 24 - October 23)Before searching far for something you need, take a look right in front of you. It may not seem so obvious at first, but it will be crystal clear in time. A show of independence will work wonders in a romance – especially with Scorpio. An unusual source tells you of an investment opportunity. Good news comes in threes.

SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22)Time spent alone gives you the opportunity to think through problems. You’ll be able to come to terms with a situation that has been troubling you for some time. If you’re in a management position, you may find that it’s lonely at the top. Change is imminent in a romance.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21)A career opportunity could come your way when you least expect it. Before discounting it at face value, take a deeper look. There may be more than meets the eye. If a major purchase is in the works, be sure to shop around. Don’t write out any check unless you’re getting a good deal.

CAPRICION (December 22 - January 19)Look back to the past to help fix a problem to-day. You’ll find that time has a way of repeating itself. Scorpio offers some words of wisdom. New romance should be avoided this month – espe-cially if a Virgo is in the picture. An introspective mood leads you to answers.

AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19)A friend’s offer of help may not be totally selfless. There could be some motives you’re not totally aware of. If you’re looking for a new job, this could be a lucky time. Be sure to explore all op-tions. Social invitations are more abundant now. Don’t be afraid to have some fun.

PISCES (February 20 - March 20)Finances will become an issue –especially if you have moved or taken on additional expenses re-cently. Careful budgeting will get you through. A “to-do” list helps keep you organized at work. Social activities may have to take a back seat to family obligations this month.

TAURUS (April 21 - MAY 21)Absence makes the heart grow fonder, especially if you’re involved with Scorpio. A decision you made several months ago has an effect on you this month. A problem that arises will be a bless-ing in disguise. Expect delays. Leo causes you frustration this month.
