Thank you to all who supported us in 2018. We have a
growing number of clients that have been using Glenlea
Park rams for as long as 20 years with some as long as 35.
Adding to the profitability of these pure Glenlea Park
commercial flocks is that agents are reporting growing
demand for Glenlea Park bred ewes. We have always been
driven to achieve maximum return on commercially
relevant traits such as fertility, growth rates, fleece weight,
wool quality and surplus sheep sales. With reference to
these traits, this is what has been achieved at Glenlea Park
in the past 12 months:
Fertility – 114% lambs marked to ewes joined (not ewes
scanned pregnant)
Growth Rates – A line of 10 month old ram lambs
averaged dressed weight of 35kgs with no supplementary
feeding
Fleece Weight - Average fleece weight of entire ewe flock
including hoggets, 9.5kgs greasy over two 6 month
shearings
Wool Quality – Hoggets wool sold for 1625c/kg at 69%
yield
Surplus Sheep Sales – A line of 280 1.5 year old ewes sold
at the Keith Off Shears sale for $308/hd (pictured below).
A line of 124 scanned dry mixed aged ewes sold for
$225/hd at the Naracoorte Livestock Exchange
Above: Our line of 1.5yo ewes that made $308 at Keith.
While rewards for well bred sheep have never been greater,
I acknowledge the difficult seasonal conditions that have
prevailed for many. If we can keep the feed up to them, the
above figures suggest that in the current wool and meat
market, a very well bred ewe can push towards a $400
return in 12 months. Let’s hope for some good winter and
spring rainfall for everyone!

2019 Ram Sales
We are looking forward to the selling season as the rams
are coming along nicely. An agent who saw the rams in
May commented, “These are ready for sale now.” Much of
our offering is bred from Glenlea Park sires. These include
160060, 160037, 160004, 150881, 150567, 150145 and
013137. Outside sires used are Moorundie NE 73,
Charinga 160712 and Banavie 160347. Our on property
ram sale is Friday August 16th with inspection from 10am
and the auction commencing at 1pm. Selling agents are
PPHS.
We will once again be displaying rams at the Australian
Sheep and Wool Show in Bendigo on 19th – 21st July, Keith
Stud Merino Field Day on 24th July, and Hamilton
Sheepvention, 4th – 6th August. Whilst we are still in the
process of allocating rams to different sales, we are selling
a team of 5 rams at the Hamilton Sheepvention and 4 at the
Adelaide Ram Sale. All rams offered for sale are approved
Gudair vaccinates for OJD and are tested Brucellosis free.
All rams have been parentage tested providing a full DNA
profile and genetic history together with their horn/poll
status.
Steining (non mules) lambs
This year we employed Dr John Steinfort to “Stein” our
lambs. This process takes the place of a surgical mules and
involves the application of liquid nitrogen to an area of skin
on the breech of the sheep and each side of the tail. The
skin is clamped at the base and liquid nitrogen is released in
an upwards motion, freezing the targeted skin but not
affecting the underlying muscle layers. The applicator is
adjusted to the width of the skin targeted and the volume of
liquid nitrogen can be increased for bigger skin wrinkles.
The computer controlled process took 10 – 15 seconds to
complete.
The Stock and Land (Feb 2019) reported that a study on
the impact of Steining on Merino lambs showed there was
no difference in average body weight gain of the breech
procedure modified (Steined) lambs and lambs that were
marked only. Lambs treated with a surgical mules had an
initial setback compared with the Steined group.
Apart from improved animal welfare, AWEX has declared
that as “Steining” is not a surgical procedure, it is non
mulesing. Therefore those lambs can be declared non-
mulesed on our wool specifications and we can declare a
‘ceased mules’ status on the remainder of our wool. We
will have a small pen of lambs on display at our ram sale so
that clients can assess for themselves the results. This
process has great potential to be a real game changer in the
wool industry as we are hearing of a renewed push from
retailers who will no longer purchase wool from surgically
mulesed animals.

STUD RESERVE
GP 180380 Sired by Charinga 160712 Dam is 140098 (Sired by Leahcim 858)
GFW 8.2kgs (5.5 months),19.0 micron, 2.7 SD, 14.2 CV, 99.9 CF, 48 Curv, Weight 98kgs (16/5/19)
380 is a productive ram in all areas. He has great width and depth of body with terrific bone which is
why he is a deceptively heavy ram. His wool cut of 8.2.kgs in 5.5 months is impressive. He has a
silky soft and pure muzzle. This softness is replicated in his wool that has a terrific test. This ram,
when left to stand amongst the mob, has a real sire’s outlook and presence.
GP 180018
ET Bred Sired by Moorundie NE 73 Dam 150193 (Sired by GP 013137)
GFW 6.6kgs (5.5 months), 18.8 micron, 3.2 SD, 17 CV, 99.7 CF, 47 Curv, Weight 104.5kgs (16/5/19)
018 is bred from the same sire and dam as our stud reserve retained last year, 170614 (this is only
reason we are considering selling this ram). An all-rounder, he is very hard to fault with width through
the chest and body and great depth of barrel. He has a long stapled, free growing wool that will handle
any environment.

GP 180030
ET Bred Sired by Moorundie NE 73 Dam is 150023 (Sired by GP 011367)
GFW 6.7kgs (5.5 months), 19.4 micron, 3 SD, 15.5 CV, 99.4 CF, 43 Curv, Weight 108kgs (16/5/19)
For make and shape, 030 is possibly the best ram we have bred. He looks like a Poll Dorset from
behind and has great width through the chest. Carcase traits are his major asset but he has a very
good wool for a ram of this type. It is long stapled and white and he has enough density as indicated
by his fleece weight of 6.7kgs. He also carries the double copy Poll gene.
GP 180173
Sired by GP 150881 Dam 151089 (Sired by GP 011367)
GFW 6.4kgs (5.5 months), 20.8 micron, 3.1 SD, 14.9 CV, 99.6 CF, 48 Curv, Weight 103.5kgs (16/5/19)
173 is extremely bold in the wool. It is a terrific wool that will handle any environment. He is soft, long
stapled and very free growing. A tall ram with a great back end, he has a very long, deep muzzle and the
potential to be a very big sire when he matures.
