A LOCAL VOICEMaryse is a local resident having lived in Salisbury for nearly 50 years raising her family, being involved in the community and supporting many important events through her love of quilting.

Maryse was 31, her husband aged 35 and their three daughters aged nine, eight and two when they arrived in Australia from France in 1969. "It was an adventure", she reflects, "we knew we could go back after two years if we didn't like it or it didn't work out". Now aged 79, Maryse knows it was a good decision to stay stating, "Adelaide is a good size and everything is close".

Most important to Maryse is the contact she has with family and friends. She regularly phones her brother, uses a computer to communicate with her children and is a keen user of Facebook to catch up with her grandchildren. Her quilting group friends are also important, with Maryse noting when her husband was sick "people would always have a coffee and a chat".

Quilting is a passion for Maryse. She has been involved in making a quilt for the City of Salisbury's Harmony Day, which was made from patches of fabric from different cultural groups.

She also made a Sorry Quilt and describes it as her "most treasured quilt, which I did in 2008 after the apology". Maryse recently completed an Aussie Quilt Hero project (pictured left), making and sending a quilt and matching laundry bag to John, an Aussie serviceman who said he missed the sea, beach and sunshine.

Shortly after sending it, Maryse received a letter from John saying how very happy he was and that it was exactly as he requested. She has since completed two more Aussie Quilt Hero projects and looks forward to doing more in the future. For more information visit: www.aussieheroquilts.blogspot.com.au

Maryse lives a life full of creativity, generosity, family and community and gives the following tip for staying active and engaged - "think of others and be involved in things - there is always something to do that you shouldn’t get bored".

'THUMBS UP' FOR SALISBURY SERVICESThe City of Salisbury is pleased to announce that an independent quality review of its services for older people has received a positive response. On 25 and 26 July 2017, an assessment team from the Australian Aged Care Quality Agency (AACQA) visited the City of Salisbury to assess services provided through Salisbury Home and Community Services.

AACQA specifically assessed the quality of services funded through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) available to eligible people aged over 65. Currently these services are provided through Home Assist and the Jack Young, Para Hills and Pine Lakes centres.

The assessors rated the performance of services against each of the expected 18 outcomes of the Home Care Common Standards. They met with customers, service coordinators, Council's executive and management staff, volunteers and contractors and reviewed relevant documentation related to service provision. Council was delighted to receive positive feedback from the assessors with the final report stating that all expected outcomes had been met.

Council wishes to thank all the people who directly participated or supported the review. It was an intensive process but extremely worthwhile.

If you would like to know more about the Home Care Common Standards visit the Quality Agency website www.aacqa.gov.au

STAY HEALTHy IN THE HEATWith summer not too far away, below are a few simple tips to stay well as the temperature rises• Drink plenty of water – avoid caffeine and alcohol

TWO NEW COMMUNITY HUBSDid you know the City of Salisbury is potentially investing in two local community hubs for you and your friends to enjoy? So what is a community hub? The City of Salisbury is potentially building two community hubs that are designed to be welcoming places that inspire people of all ages and all backgrounds to get involved in business, cultural, learning and educational opportunities. The hubs will be vibrant meeting places where people can come together to exchange ideas, participate and celebrate in a modern, flexible, multi-purpose and well-equipped setting. Hubs are exciting places for you and your friends to visit.

Para Hills Community Hub update The Para Hills Community Hub will be located at the corner of Kesters Road and Wilkinson Road on the site that already houses the Para Hills Library and Para Hills Senior Centre (so right next to the Para Hills Shopping Centre). A 580m2 extension to the existing building is planned along with an upgrade to the car park and external landscaping. The completed hub will have two multifunction spaces that can each hold 120 people, six multifunction meeting rooms, kitchen café, new foyer, commercial kitchen facilities,

internal courtyard and a library reading room. Construction will commence soon with the new community hub expected to be complete by the second half of 2018. In the future, the Paddocks Community Centre will move into the new Para Hills Community Hub, however, in the meantime, it's business as usual for the senior centre, library and community centre.

Salisbury Community Hub update The City of Salisbury is proposing to establish a community hub in the Salisbury City Centre on John Street between Civic Square and Parabanks Shopping Centre. The hub would be the social heart of our city centre and a place to showcase and experience the differences Salisbury has to offer. The features being proposed include a range of community spaces along with a library, public gallery, Council’s administration and Chambers. Towards the end of 2017 Council will be considering community feedback and detailed project designs before making a final commitment to the community hub. Construction could commence in early 2018 and be completed by the end of 2019.

DOES VOLUNTEERING MATTER?

A forum held at the Jack Young Centre in September 2017 provided older Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer/Questioning (LGBTIQ) people with an opportunity to discuss the positive and challenging aspects of ageing.

The forum was a partnership between the City of Salisbury and COTA SA and was designed to give older LGBTIQ people a voice to help inform and shape policy and actions that impact on people as they age.

For more information about the LGBTIQ people Ageing Well Project contact Desmond Ford on 8232 0422 or email [email protected]

LGBTIQ VOICE

Has anybody given you a perplexed look and asked 'why do you volunteer?’

Just over a decade ago, the Australian Bureau of Statistics included the very first question on volunteering in the 2006 census. This data along with other reliable research is now critical in determining the value of volunteering. For example did you know that:

• Individuals and the environment benefit greatly from volunteer support

• 5.8 million Australians - or 31 per cent of the population - aged 15 years and older volunteer in an organisation or agency

• Volunteering makes an estimated annual economic and social contribution of $290 billion to Australia – outstripping revenue sources from mining, agriculture and the retail sector

• Volunteers gain in many ways from helping others; and

• Volunteering has a pivotal role in building strong, resilient and cohesive communities.

So the next time someone asks you why you volunteer, tell them you are doing something important, something that matters.

To find out more about Council's volunteering opportunities, visit: www.salisbury.sa.gov.au/volunteering or email [email protected]

Mr Ware, a local resident, is thankful for the support he has received to help him find accommodation in a community housing property. Looking forward, Mr Ware says "Once I’m settled in my little one bedroom unit, I will look at joining a men’s program or even finding a table tennis group. This will relax my mind and get me to focus on other things beside pain."

Funded by the Australian Department of Health, the Assistance with Care and Housing for the Aged Program provides support to people who are 50 years and over looking to find alternative, safe, affordable and long-term accommodation.

put a spring into your stepAfter the dark chill of winter, why not enjoy the wonder spring offers with a burst of warmth, light, colour and activity?Spring is a time of growth and new beginnings, and the perfect time to focus on feeling your best by getting active. Regular exercise and activity are important for everyone's physical and mental health and can help people maintain independence and enhance their quality of life as they age.

So, why not be active outside? Walk around your local neighbourhood or bring along your family and friends and explore the wonderful trails in Salisbury. Whatever you do, make it easy, achievable, enjoyable and social. Try weaving in small targets like walking to the next stobie pole or the next street - anything is better than nothing.

If walking is not your thing, find something else you enjoy or try something new such as tai chi, a low level exercise group or dancing, then try and increase your level of activity over time.

Ask yourself these important questions…

• What does healthy ageing mean to you?

• How do you maintain your health?

• Do you have a goal for your health and wellbeing for the next six to 12 months? If you do, write it down.

• What could assist you to maintain your health?

• What might be the obstacles that prevent you from maintaining your health?

• How could these obstacles be overcome?

If you are interested in being active and are not sure what to do, have a chat to the friendly volunteers and staff at the Jack Young or Para Hills centres - they'll help you get a spring in your step.

BRAIN HEALTHIf you like crossword or sudoku puzzles and are looking for a different challenge, why not try rebus puzzles to get your mind working?

The puzzles can be quite tricky and challenging at first, but once you get the idea of the style of thinking behind the puzzle, they can be a lot of fun. See if you can work out the sayings from the 10 rebus puzzles below: (see answers on page 18).

A rebus puzzle is a riddle or image made up of letters, pictures and/or symbols to represent common words or sayings. For example, the puzzle right represents the saying ‘one in a million’ as the number '1' is written inside the word ‘million’.

INSPIRING HEALTHIn 2017, more than 150 City of Salisbury residents, employees and volunteers aged 40 to 75 participated in assessments as part of the Inspiring Health Project. This partnership project with Flinders University involved participants completing a survey and an assessment that focused on balance, hearing, strength, coordination, sleep and other important aspects of health. Overall, 107 women (68%) and 51 men (32%) participated with the majority of participants aged 60 to 69 years.

Results to date have identified a number of ways of improving the health of the Salisbury community including:

• The importance of increasing physical activity levels that promotes increased walking speeds, muscle strength and stability. This increased activity will also assist to control body weight and muscle/fat mass proportions and blood pressure.

• Assistance to identify hearing loss issues.

• Education and strategies to improve pelvic floor issues.

• Information and ways to improve balance.

The City of Salisbury is exploring ways to use this information to better target health initiatives for the community.

For background information on this project, visit www.salisbury.sa.gov.au/healthcheck

Interested community members are again being treated to theatre workshops as part of an initiative to include more creative arts at Jack Young Centre.

Mr Alan Hendry of Vintage Theatre Coop’s ran the 'Don’t Act your Age' recreational theatre workshops to interested seniors.

The series of easy-paced workshops are designed for a mature audience and teaches basic theatre and stage performance techniques to allow participants to unlock their creative potential.

Over 18 weeks a group of keen participants learnt theatre skills and workshopped the formation of a performance that was presented as a work in progress to family and friends in August. Titled ‘Off the Shelf’, everyone involved did a fantastic job and it was a chance for people to explore their hidden talents and stretch their imagination. People taking part in the workshops found that it was a very worthwhile experience and great to work as a team and be a part of something bigger.

Method:

Cut 6 slices of bread into triangles with crust cut off.

Lightly cover the bread with margarine then lightly cover with strawberry jam.

Lay slices of the bread in an oven proof container. Lightly sprinkle sultanas and coconut over the layer.

Repeat this up to 3 to 4 layers ending with the sultanas and coconut.

In a separate bowl mix together the cream, milk, eggs, vanilla and caster sugar.

You must mix until the sugar has dissolved.

Pour over the bread layers and push down on the bread a little so that the liquid is absorbed.

Sprinkle a little nutmeg over the top and then place in the oven on 100°C for about 30 minutes.

Then turn the oven up to 180°C and cook for a further 30 minutes. Keep a check on it so it doesn’t overcook.

Para hills Centre NEWSThe Centre is delighted to introduce Sue Jackson as their new acting coordinator.

Sue has been working at Para Hills since June 2017 and is a well-recognised face from the Jack Young Centre. She has been busy planning new opportunities and activities for current members and is also looking to attract new seniors to the centre.

She is thoroughly enjoying her time at the centre describing it as “a great place to be; the people are friendly, the food is delicious, the volunteers are outstanding and there is a great range of activities on offer”.

If you have not visited the centre yet, Sue encourages you to come along and join the Para Hills Songsters or Ukulele Group, try a tai chi or brain gym session or pop along to a special event such as the fabulous Womens Luncheon in September that attracted more than 80 women.

Upcoming events at the Para Hills Senior Centre are a Melbourne Cup Luncheon on Tuesday 7 November and a Christmas Luncheon on Friday 1 December.

Expressions of interest are also being sought for the following groups:

• Wood burning

• Chit Chat Friends Group

• Line dancing

• Games group

• Gardening group

If you are interested in participating in any of the above new activities, please ring Sue on 8406 8544.

The Para Hills Senior Centre is a vibrant and friendly place. Why not visit the Centre for lunch and say hi to Sue and the friendly volunteers?

See page 23 for opening times during the festive season.

Pine lakes centre NEWSSet in a picturesque environment surrounded by a glorious green park and duck-filled lake, Pine Lakes is a seniors centre enjoyed by many cultural and linguistically diverse people. Cultural Coordinator Mary Ceravolo describes a typical Monday where you can experience the rich diversity of the Italian, Polish, Indian, Bhutanese, Russian and China-Russian cultures, “It’s a great way to start the week with the Monday group at Pine Lakes. The Italian program is now very much intercultural and welcomes everyone that likes Italian food or are friends of Italian culture”. Mary added that, “we talk with our hands, so speaking Italian or a common language is not essential. With great food on the table, who needs an interpreter?”

A special project this intercultural group has been busy working on is a making gifts from recycled and pre-loved fabrics to give to all the volunteers who support the cultural programs. Mary explains that people working together on a creative project brings them closer, building important connections and friendships within the group. “Language and culture may be diverse, but we are one of the same when we’re together,” Mary said.

For more information on the centre and other cultural groups, please contact the Jack Young Centre on 8406 8525 and ask for Thuy or Mary.
