HEADITORIAL
Dear Parents and
Students,
Welcome to the first
newsletter of 2012.
Much of the contents
concern events that took
place at the end of last
term. Music took a high
profile and the standard
of performance at the
Carol Concerts and the
Senior Citizens’ party was
outstanding;
congratulations to all
concerned. The amount
of work carried out by
the Music Department
and the time staff and
girls gave up to help the
local community at
Christmas was also
admirable.
More congratulations,
this time to our Oxbridge
girls, whether successful
or not – you all did
exceptionally well and
we are proud of you. We
all know how hard you
have worked.
All Year 11, 12 and 13 girls
have been getting to
grips with external
examinations as well as
internal “mocks” and we
all hope that these are
going well. The entrance
test takes place
tomorrow and I wish our
Year 6 Junior girls all the
very best.

Music
Many congratulations to all the
girls who were involved in our
carol service at the end of last
term. It proved to be a very
special occasion and a perfect
start to the Christmas
celebrations. All the choirs sang
beautifully and there were
many moving moments to
enjoy. All musical extra-
curricular activities start next
week and I am particularly
keen for as many girls as
possible to get involved in the
choirs (Senior choir on Monday
lunchtime, Youth choir on
Wednesday and Cantabile on
Thursday and Wednesday after
school) as we prepare for our
next extravaganza – the Choir
concert on Wednesday 14th
March. This concert will also
feature our Community Choir
singing Haydn’s Maria Theresa
Mass so parents (including
Junior School parents), staff
and girls put the date on your
calendar, there will be more
details next week. Training
Orchestra will also be
rehearsing on Friday, so do not
forget your instruments. I am
keen to get as many year 7&8
instrumentalists involved as they
are preparing for their own
concert at the end of next
term. Mr Lloyd
Senior Citizens’ Tea Party
BHHS once again played host
to 89 senior citizens at their
annual tea party. The guild reps
and officers had an enjoyable
time sharing many valuable
experiences. Many senior
citizens look forward to coming
to this event. A special carol
service is put on followed by
entertainment from the pupils
and a lovely tea. The highlight
of the afternoon is a special visit
from Father Christmas; all of the
visitors receive a present. Every
year the number of visitors is
increasing, sadly this year St
Dunstan’s was unable to make
it, but residents still received
their presents which were
delivered the following day.
I know that many of our visitors
are awaiting this year’s date!

Oxbridge News
We are delighted that the
following students have been
offered places at Oxford:
Stephanie Austera (Law at St.
Catherine’s), Rebecca Hart
(Law at St. Hilda’s) and Verity
Smith (Experimental Psychology
at University College). All the
girls worked very hard to
prepare for their ordeal – sorry –
application - and thoroughly
deserve their places.
Congratulations!
Commiserations also to the girls
who narrowly missed out on a
place there, because they also
worked extremely hard and are
outstanding candidates, who
are holding offers from other
prestigious universities. We wish
all the Y13 success this year.
Carols for Charity
The girls raised £268.32 for the
two singing sessions in
December and that money
has been put towards a team-
building and confidence
boosting outdoors activity trip
for some of the charity’s
youngest clients.

JUNIOR EDITORIAL
Dear Parents,
I do hope that all BHHS
families had a fantastic
Christmas break and it
was lovely to welcome
the girls back on
Wednesday. On behalf
of the staff and myself, I
would like to say a huge
thank you for the very
kind gifts and cards. We
are still making our way
through the many
chocolates/biscuits etc,
that on a cold January
break-time brighten our
day!
Following my letter
before Christmas, I do
hope that most girls in
Years 1-6 will be able to
support us at the Open
Afternoon on 21st
January. While you may
be happy to leave your
daughter, we are always
delighted to welcome
current parents who may
like to look around the
school during the
afternoon.
It was wonderful to have
our first fixtures against
Brighton College this
week. I was really
pleased with our
commitment. I would
also like to encourage
parents whose daughters
are playing to come
along and support the
teams, you will be very
welcome, particularly to
the lovely match tea
afterwards!

CHALLENGE BOARD
You may have noticed our new
„Challenge Board‟, located by
the pupils‟ entrance. This
board will display challenges
that the girls may choose to
participate in, if they so wish.
Some of the challenges will be
set by teachers, some will be
opportunities that arise outside
of school. The girls will be given
a brief description of the
challenge in assembly, then will
be able to use the board to
find out further information. We
hope this will encourage
independence, self-motivation
and give the opportunity to
demonstrate talents! The first
„Writing Challenge‟ was set by
Miss Berlin; the girls were given
the opportunity to write a
poem entitled „A Celebration
of Light‟. Hannah Briscoe (4D)
won the competition by writing
this poem, which we felt had a
lovely sentiment.
Christmas is fun,
Christmas is neat,
Christmas has lovely things to
eat.
Turkey with gravy,
Pudding with cream,
All of these things,
Seem like a dream.
Father Christmas shouts ‘ho ho
ho’
With his sack on is back and
away he goes.
Rudolph is clever,
Rudolph is bright,
When swiftly darting,
From left to right
But the best thing that happens
on Christmas day
Is that families get together
And that’s how we’ll stay.
Well done Hannah! Girls- keep
your eye on the board to see
which challenges you‟d like to
participate in!
Junior School Eco Committee
members of all ages took part
in a National event on Tuesday
when they donned plastic
tabards and rubber gloves and
went litter picking around our
school grounds. It was part of
„The Big Tidy Up‟, which is run by
the Keep Britain Tidy.
Organisation every year to help
keep our environment free from
unsightly and dangerous litter.
Our „fruit and vegetables only‟
rule for break time snacks
means that we are a very tidy
school with a minimum of litter -
particularly as the Eco
Committee collect the cores
and fruit for compost every
day. Nevertheless the girls still
managed to collect five big
bagfuls of rubbish and
highlighted the need for us to
be even more watchful. A big
thank you to everyone who
helped and we will be making
this a regular feature of the
Junior School in the future.
Yr 5 VISIT TO BIMM
Year 5 learned all about the
technical aspects of making
modern music with an inspiring
team of student teachers
during their pre-Christmas
outing to the Brighton Institute
of Modern Music. The girls
learned everything there is to
know about the trumpet and
developed their musical skills
with Brazilian drumming,
electric guitar special effects
and sang along to the classic
Christmas song “Rockin‟
Around The Christmas Tree”,
performed live in the BIMM
studios with a full backing
band. Lots of fun and loud
musical sounds were enjoyed
by all! Our thanks to Mrs
Hamilton who was able to
organise this for us.
