FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students of Caroline Chisholm College,

We are currently selecting our Student Leaders for the next 12 months and, as always, this is both a wonderfully rewarding and very difficult task.

All students whom we interview demonstrate outstanding personal qualities and would bring their particular talents to the leadership team. Thus it can be very difficult to make decisions about which students will

have the opportunity to become an “official” Student Leader because all really are already effective leaders as shown by their nomination by their peers and teachers. The richly rewarding aspect of this process is the opportunity for the Year Leaders, Mr King or myself to listen to students from Years 7 to 11 talk about their understanding of leadership. They really see it as a means of being of service to others and so modelling their behaviour on the example of Jesus. For them, this is not just words - they are all able to give concrete examples of what this means in their lives. Some of their responses have included: • listening to the ideas of others and sharing them with the other leaders • showing compassion and understanding to others • helping out whenever they see a need or are asked • acting with honesty, integrity and justice • working to create a more just world through education, action and fund-raising • developing good relationships between all members of the community. We still have further interviews to complete but we can be confident that the 2009/2010 Leadership Team will be well supported by many other outstanding students. All who have been nominated for leadership positions should be very proud - they are all excellent role models and a credit to themselves, their parents and our college community.

World Swimming Champion - Kara Leo Congratulations to Kara who won TEN medals - 5 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze - at the Global Games held in Liberec, Czech Republic in July. These amazing results reflect Kara’s talent and her ongoing commitment to training each day. Kara’s results included:

The calendar has also been available on the college website.

We are very happy to continue publishing a paper calendar if you find it helpful.

To assist us determine whether you find it useful, would you please take a few moments to complete the survey that you will receive in the next few days. Changes to College Sports Uniform Advances in textile technology mean that better fabrics are now available for sports clothes. We have thus redesigned the sports shirt and shorts in these fabrics.

The new design will be compulsory only for Year 7 students in 2010. Current students can continue to wear the existing uniform until the end of 2011. However they can purchase the new design at any time should they wish to do so. To help us reduce our current stock to make way for the new style, remaining sports shirts and shorts will be sold with a 20% discount on current prices. Yours sincerely

From the Leader of Learning and Teaching A look at the calendar for the next fortnight shows a great number of events and activities are scheduled, none of these just happen and each reflect a significant amount of time and the effort on the part of students and staff to ensure that they are ready for each of them. Last week major works for HSC students in Textiles and Design and English Extension 2 were submitted, this week the Visual Arts students complete their bodies of works. Students in Dance completed their HSC practical exam two weeks ago. HSC Music students are in the process of finalising their pieces and will shortly complete their performance exams. The Penrith Show was on this weekend. In addition to our agriculture display and competition in livestock, many students submitted works in the schools section. This year we had many entries in the Art and Craft section. A key component of any show is the live exhibits, thank you to the Agriculture students and staff who spent much time preparing , competing and maintaining the stock on display. The quality of the Agriculture display and all works on show is an enormous credit to all involved. Last Tuesday, Year 8 students enjoyed Medieval Day which highlights the work that they have been doing in English and HSIE on life in medieval times. Year 11 Preliminary Course Final Examinations are scheduled at the end of term and students received their timetable yesterday. As all exams are assessment tasks, the timetable needs to be read in conjunction with the assessment handbook for weightings of individual exams and components for each subject. Year 10 will receive their exam timetable this week. Ms Lisa-Maree Browning Leader of Learning & Teaching

SPORTS NEWS CAROLINE CHISHOLM

COLLEGE

PDSSSC Athletics Carnival 2009 The annual PDSSSC Zone Athletics Carnival was held at Blacktown Olympic Park on Tuesday 25th August 2009. We couldn’t have wished for better weather, although it was quite windy first thing in the morning for all those early competitors in the long distance events. Staff travelling with approximately 35 students on the day included Mrs McElroy, who was chief timekeeper on the day, Ms Gray PDSSSC organisation and Ms Connolly looked after the team in getting organised and getting to their events. The track events began at 8am and the rounds for the field events at 8:30am. It was always going to be a busy day but some of the highlights included the Junior (Year 7 Madeline Rushton, Delyse McCaffrey, Year 8 Alison Ruse and Daniela Klinsic) & Intermediate (Year 8 Tavleen Singh, Year 9 Krista Hackenberg, Year 10 Christie Lee and Alix Roberts) relay teams winning convincingly, Alison Ruse in the Hurdles, Long Jump and 100m, Tavleen Singh 200m, 100m & 400m, Madeline Rushton 400m, Krista Hackenberg 400m & 200m and Kristen Smith in the Shot Putt all who will all compete into the next level of competition at the Combined Catholic Colleges. We are also hoping to see an invitation to the next level with an outstanding result on the day from Brooke Kirk in the high jump coming equal first in her age division. Each student gave their all to the day but to all students who competed in several events your have done your school especially proud: Meaghan Lonard, Tavleen Singh and Krista Hackenberg. A special mention to our outgoing Year 12 students Renee McElduff and Sarah Jones, thank you both for your commitment to our college over the past six years. The day had some memorable moments, most notable of which was the results for our students but it was also a day where our college spirit was shown with each student supporting not only our college but showing unselfish behaviour lending other colleges our relay batons and going to events to support friends from nearby schools. A big thank to all the people who made this day possible especially Ms Matheson, Ms Gray, Mr McIllveen and Mrs McElroy in the lead up to the event and all the students who participated and parents / friends who supported us all. Careers Here is some advice for Year 12 students applying for university.

Your online selection can be up to 9 choices. UAC however will only offer you ONE choice no matter how good your ATAR (UAI of old). They will offer you the first choice that you make on your list so the order is most important. You should always leave your heart’s desire as first choice even if you feel you are unlikely to gain the ATAR needed. The reason for this is that ATARs change each year, that published entry ranks may not be not the real ranks for entry and that flexible entry programs may assist to boost your chances of entry. The variables cannot be accurately predicted!

Penrith City Council has many traineeships on offer for Year 12 school leavers. Apply online directly to the council. Congratulations to Ajita Joshi who has been offered a Business Cadetship at a North Sydney accounting firm. This means she will work full time and complete her degree in Business (accounting major) part-time. Dawne Amaya, our school captain, is progressing well in her application with the Australian Defence Forces and has now to attend a three day officer selection board round.

Year 12 students looking for work next year should have resumes ready and begin seeking positions on job websites and with jobnetwork providers. Mr Marc Petit - Careers Advisor

Year Seven Bully Busters

On the afternoon Friday 28th August, Year Seven had the opportunity to see a play called Bully Busters. It was presented by a group of people from a company called Class Act. Their aim is to try to bring awareness about what bullying is, the various forms of bullying and the opportunity for students to reflect on their own interactions with others. It was a very entertaining afternoon with many laughs as the actors presented this significant topic with a humorous twist. It was interesting to see the girls move from seeing the play purely for its entertainment value to gaining an insight into how our words and actions directly affect the people we interact with. Some of the comments and questions that the

students shared following the play, demonstrated how much learn ing had occurred throughout the afternoon. Mr Damien Mills Leader of Learning Year 7

Public Speaking At the beginning of Term 3 all students in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 prepared a speech, based on a selection of topics, and delivered them in English classes. Whilst this was an assessment task a competitive element was added to make the task more appealing. Each teacher selected their most accomplished speaker, from each class, to compete in Year finals which were held on the 13th August. The winner of each year group then presented their speech at a College assembly which took place on Thursday 27th August. The standard of the finalists was very high and the winners from each year group delivered entertaining and interesting speeches at the assembly, demonstrating excellent skills in presentation. This year we also asked a speaker from Year 9, Cheri Watts-Sands, to deliver her speech as it was quite inspirational and gave such a strong message of hope that we decided it was an effective way of communicating the positive idea that sometimes good things can arise out of negative, even tragic, experiences. Congratulations to all the finalists and to the winners of each year group: Year 7: Alana Azzopardi, Tiarnne Brown, Jennifer Celeban, Bernadette Fam, Agrima Shrestha, Sophie Stanojevic, Jessica Walker, Meagan Warda, Chloe Willingale 3rd place: Shayley Hackenberg 2nd place: Jennifer Mazzei 1st place: Tara Xiberras Year 8: Alanah Ellul, Emma Felsch, Shivangi Shahu, Tavleen Singh, Rebecca Vella, Elle Wilson 3rd place: Mary Leonardo 2nd place: Erinn Gallagher 1st place: Sarah Thornton Year 9: Riley Earle, Jessica Hocking, Madeleine Hutchins, Brianna Law,Emily Stinton 3rd place: Keira Warda 2nd place: Cheri Watts-Sands 1st place: Rebekkah Humphrey Year 10: Karlie Beckhaus, Tamara Bentley, Gabby De Jesus, Navjeet Kaur 3rd place: Tashayla Matia 2nd place: Rachel Hudson 1st place: Georgia Stellios MrsMichele Elborough Leader of Learning - English

MEDIEVAL DAY

CAROLINE CHISHOLM COLLEGE

Day Medieval

Year 8

The Fair Ladies of Glenmore Manor spent the day immersed in the life of medieval men and women on Tuesday 25 August. Students enthusiastically volunteered to be placed in the stocks or the scold’s bridal to experience medieval punishments which were not pleasant at all! The luxurious side of life for noble women was uncovered by trying out a range of dresses from the time period. We discovered that Isabella of Spain ruled ‘half the world’ but had so much material in her dress that it was difficult to move! Spears and axes, shields and helmets were all tested for their utility while wearing the mail armour was the most impractical of outfits because of its enormous weight. The two winners of our fashion parade performed in character to demonstrate the life of a peasant and a jester, while other students performed the fairytale ‘The Princess and the Pea’ to uncover what being a true princess required. A range of medieval games were tested and the tournament after lunch proved that Mr Petit’s class could not be beaten in tug of war! Ms Natalie Jacka

PASS CAMP LIBRARY HAPPENINGS

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE YEAR 11 CATHEDRAL EXCURSION

CAROLINE CHISHOLM COLLEGE

Year 9 and 10 PASS (Physical Activity and Sport Studies) students took off for a three day camping expedition on Wednesday 19th August and returned on Friday 21st August. The camp took place at camp Yarramundi, Deimba at Springwood and is a part of the Adventures in the Great Outdoors unit in which students develop several skills in outdoor education. On day two and three students took a 4km track to YMCA outdoor education centre in which they engaged in a variety of activities including; abseiling, rock climbing, alpine rescue, the giant swing and archery. The camp also allowed students to put to practice skills learnt in class, including; setting up a campsite, cooking, working as a team, organising, decision making and communicating with others. The camp was also a great opportunity for students to acknowledge and appreciate a shower and a good home cooked meal. Thank you to all students who attended the camp. We appreciate your enthusiasm, involvement and wonderful behaviour. A special thank you to Miss Field, Mr McIlveen and Mr Dent for all of their help during the camp. It was a fantastic experience and I am sure the girls will have many fond memories of the Caroline Chisholm College PASS camp 2009. Ms Matheson PDHPE teacher Library happenings Book Week went off with a bang! With the rest of Australia, the Library celebrated the Book of the Year Awards in the theme “Book Safari” holding a bargain book stall and lunchtime movie (Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events) which drew a full house each of the three days.

Premier’s Reading Challenge officially ended on August 31, with 77 students completing the challenge. While commendable for these students, this figure is much lower than last year’s figure. This is a shame because it is an excellent program well supported by the school. All students in Years 7

and 8, for whom participation is compulsory, will be surveyed in the next few weeks on their response to the Challenge in order that a better result can be obtained next year. There are a couple of really great writing competitions on now and you don’t have to belong to the writers’ club to join (membership to that is always open!) Making a Difference from Charles Sturt University – for students aged 15-21. The task is to write a creative and engaging story, poem or script that addresses a social justice issue. Prize: publication and $250 cash plus $250 to your favourite charity. Closes 5 October. Youth Writes invites contributions (in verse or prose with a limit of 500 words) to this esteemed biennial publication. Closes 30 October 2009. Details for both in the Library on the Competitions notice board. Mrs Carole Dent Teacher / Librarian Year 11 Cathedral Excursion On Tuesday 18th August, the Year 11 girls, made their way through peak hour traffic to get to St Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral and St John’s Anglican Cathedral at Parramatta. We all got to school at normal time ready to board buses at 8:30 to be at St Patrick’s by 9 o’clock. At St Patrick’s Cathedral the grade split up into two groups and we went through two different activities. The first was an informational power point presentation from Mrs Araya and the second was a talk about the items and holy sacraments. At St Patrick’s our worksheets were completed and as we went along we filled in our questions to help us with our preliminary exams. After St Patrick’s Cathedral, we headed over to Prince Alfred Park, where we enjoyed a long relaxing lunch and a chat with our peers. An hour later we began to walk to St John’s Anglican Cathedral. At St John’s we all sat in the wonderfully decorated Cathedral where we enjoyed a talk and some historical information about St John’s and the Anglican community. We then filed out one by one after a quick tour, as we had to be back to the buses by 1:30. Past all the shops and cafés we walked with the teachers close by our side to make sure we didn’t get diverted!
