Dearest readers,

First of all, allow me to send you all my warmest wishes of peace and prosperity upon the arrival of the greatest month of all: the holy month of Ramadan. This is a time to spend with your families and all your loved ones; a time to spend in the company of the Qur’an; a time to give back and thank God for all that we have been blessed with. As our readers you help keep the magazine alive and you inspire us every day.

At theCITY, you are our family and we are blessed to have you.

This issue we have something special for everyone and we focused on providing an outlet for all your various Ramadan needs. We've featured fashion, food, and health. We also have the pleasure of featuring Luluwa Al-Khataf’s heartwarming and eye-opening trip to Djibouti in which we remind ourselves of Ramadan’s most important aspects: ‘The Bliss of Giving.’

Let us all take advantage of Ramadan and make it count by making our hearts and souls grow in its blissful presence.

Ramadan Mubarak!

Sincerely,

10A Wonderful World

Celebrates Social Media Day

Be honest: how much better is your life because of Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook? How many great friends have you made; things you’ve learned; and companies you’ve personally interacted with? Well, when it comes to Zain, they aspire to make every social experience you have with them meaningful and productive. And now, with the advent of social media, they do it better, clearer, and closer than ever before.

Known for their friendly, personable attitude towards customer care and for their strong social media standing (numbering at 200,000 followers in Kuwait alone and 3 million within the region), Zain put on its second annual Social Media Day celebration and united everyone at Missoni Hotel on June 30th, 2013. With a large number of Kuwait’s greatest influencers and social media personalities from all sectors of society in attendance, Zain dazzled everyone with performances and shows while also celebrating and acknowledging the influence of Kuwait’s online community.

Social Media Day is a global celebration that was initially created and organized by Mashable.com; the number one Social Media blog in the world that has expanded to include 398 cities worldwide. Social Media Day is about letting everyone know how important, useful, and accessible social media is to all users around the globe. Social Media Day encourages others to think outside the box, interact with one another more, and to utilize social networks to both their benefit and the benefit of others.

The focus of Zain’s Social Media Day event was to praise and celebrate all the achievements which Kuwait’s media influencers, socialites, and bloggers have reached through social media this year. Zain sought out to acknowledge all those who have truly made their presence known in Kuwait’s online community while also making sure to keep everyone entertained and relaxed throughout the night. By shedding light on these distinguished individuals and inspiring the crowd to be creative, sociable, and innovative, Zain helped nurture positive, happy responses from all those who attended this fun, memorable bash.

During the event, Zain emphasized that Social Media Day is one which honors the technological and societal advancements that have allowed them to engage, connect and to communicate with their customers. Zain Kuwait is a company that managed to put their customers at the forefront of their priorities, and with social media, Zain has endorsed their leading position and successfully played a big role, as the first telecom company to launch social media channels in Kuwait.

As it was last year, Zain’s Social Media Day was a huge success and has re-affirmed Zain’s position as a leader in Kuwait’s customer care, social accessibility, and constant adaptability to global innovations.

Zain invites its customers to visit the company’s official social media channels on: twitter.com/zainkuwait and facebook.com/zainkuwait and instagram.com/zainkuwait.

The special ‘guest’ has arrived! The 9th month of the lunar calendar has begun. It is the month which Muslims around the world await in great anticipation. It is the month of mercy, forgiveness, piety, love and brotherhood – it is the blessed month of Ramadan!

In this month, the final revelation to all humanity began to be revealed to Prophet Muhammad (may peace and blessings be upon him. “The month of Ramadhan in which the Qur’an was revealed, a guidance for humankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong)” [The Qur’an, 2:185]. In addition to the Qur’an, other holy books were also revelaed in this month, such as the Torah to prophet Moses (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Gospel to prophet Jesus (peace and blessings be upon him). Various kinds of worship have been prescribed for Muslims, these include the following:

Muslims read the entire Qur’an during Ramadhan, and some of them might read the entire Book more than once. The Muslim knows that reading a single letter of the Quran brings a tenfold reward, and that reading a single page brings a thousand rewards. “This is a Book (the Qur’an), which We have sent down to you, full of blessings that they may ponder over its verses, and that people of understanding may remember” [The Qur’an, 38:29].

Fasting means refraining from food, drink, sexual intercourse etc

from dawn until sunset. Muslims are not the only nation on whom Allah (may He be exalted) has enjoined fasting, other previous nations were also prescribed fasting. “O you who believe fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you so that you can learn taqwa” [The Qur’an, 2:183]. ‘Taqwa’ is translated in many ways including God consciousness, God fearing, piety, and self restraining. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) said "Fasting is not merely abstaining from eating and drinking, rather it is abstaining from ignorant and indecent speech...".

Praying at night has a great effect in purifying and reforming the heart and soul, and is also a means of forgiveness. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of be upon him) said: “Whoever prays at night (qiyam) in Ramadhan put of faith and in the hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.”

Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was the most generous of people, and he was most generous in Ramadhan. He mentioned that the reward of the one who gives food to a fasting person to break his fast is equivalent to the reward of the fasting person, without that detracting from the reward of the fasting person in the slightest.

Finally, Allah (may He be exalted) has enjoined a special charity to be given at the end of Ramadhan. This is called Zakaat al-Fitr, by means of which the fasting person offers expiation for any idle or obscene speech he may have uttered during his fast; it is also a means of feeding and helping the poor. It is one of the means which make people feel the unity, cohesion and mutual compassion of the Muslim community.

Allah (may He be exalted) has also enjoined that those who have fasted should offer the Eid prayer, as a conclusion to these good deeds that they have done during Ramadhan, and as a way of bringing them together to express their joy and gratitude towards the Lord and Creator of the heavens and earth.

May Allah (may He be exalted) accept our deeds and forgive our shortcomings, Amen.

Perfect Ramadan, Perfect

Marriage!Dearest readers, Happy Ramadan! I am so happy to meet with you again during this special time. Ramadan is the month of spirituality, and the month of family and gatherings. Ramadan is all about bonding and caring, bonding with God, our families, our loved ones, and ourselves.

For me, Ramadan is the month of hope. I’m sure we can agree that this month has a special feeling to it. For many ladies, Ramadan carries very high expectations. Many of you may be hoping, wishing, and even awaiting the fairytale Ramadan experience. I know. You expect to break your fast with a magically transformed husband who bonds and chats with his wife at the futoor table. You expect him to be so charming and sweet the entire time, listening and attentive, and definitely not fixated on his cell phone. A picture perfect Ramadan.

Stop. Reality check. Picture perfect is far away for couples who have not seriously and effectively worked on their marriage. Additionally, the need for perfection limits our ability to enjoy ourselves and live in the moment. This need for a picture perfect

setting and the stress surrounding this image can cause Ramadan to become a disaster.

Please allow me to provide you with a few tips related to communicating and bonding effectively this Ramadan.

Ramadan Guidelines for Speaking with your Husbands:

1. Keep it Realistic.Let’s keep things in realistic perspective. This month, for some if not many, is the only month where husbands and wives eat at the same table at the same time with their kids and enjoy a meal. Here we start with a bump in the road. If you and your husband never have a meal together during the remaining months, how realistic is it to expect your husband to sit at a table with you comfortably and have a civilized conversation? Not very. So, what do you do? Start small. Maybe talk about how yummy the rice is or pass the Vimto, rather than, how was your day or the problems surrounding your day.

2. Choose the Correct Time to Chat. Remember, fasting can be exhausting. For those of you who have husbands who work all day, please understand that catching them the second they enter the door to grill them with questions is a big no-no. So, imagine this with the added variable of fasting! No way. Men come home with very high stress levels from work, especially with the traffic, hot weather, and now fasting is added to the mix. Please allow him to detox. If he wants to take an afternoon nap, let him. The best time to discuss any issue is after futoor, around coffee time or later at night when he’s energized and well rested. Remember to choose the best time to chat. There really is no need to create an unnecessary argument and tension just because you chose an incorrect time.

3. Is He A Smoker? Proceed with Caution! Ah, the smoker. Many smokers have a rough time during Ramadan. You see them at the workplace hiding in their offices, avoiding human contact. You see them on edge with friends and family. So ladies, if your husband is a smoker, you have been warned. Please proceed with caution. Please understand what

they are going through and please do not take their actions personally. Give them their space and try to avoid any unneeded conversations during the fasting periods.

4. Topics to Discuss Should Be Pre-Screened.Many topics of conversation may cross your mind throughout this Holy month. The question that I would like you to consider is: “Do I have to deal with this issue right now? Can it wait? Is this the best way and the best time to approach this issue?” Sometimes, when we become comfortable with people around us, we forget that they have their own issues and they have their own preferences. It is to your advantage to plan ahead in order to get the desired results be it financial or otherwise. Think before you speak, especially during this month.

5. No Nagging.Oh, the nagging. Ladies, this is a big one and I know you have been guilty of this at one point or another. Did you know that in the US judges give husbands, who kill their wives, a reduced sentence when they hear that the wife is a nag? I’m serious! So, let’s take a moment to define nagging. To a man, nagging is anything that entails repeating a request or complaint more than once in a 7 day span. So, if you are doing this, be aware that during Ramadan this will not fly. If you need something, ask at the right time, the right way, without an ultimatum and definitely without a command. If something is an emergency or needs to be done immediately, request sweetly, correctly, and concisely. The more drama surrounding the issue the higher the stress levels will be, and the less the probability that it will be dealt with positively.

Dearest readers, I hope these few tips clarify some important issues that may arise during this special month. Remember to keep expectations at a reasonable level and translate correctly. If you are having difficulties, I urge you to take effective action to remedy an imperfect situation. Try. Work on your marriage. There is hope. If you have any questions, I invite you to connect with me via social media or by email. Have an amazing Ramadan and taqabal Allah!

@Creating_Chaos

During a recent project in Kuwait, I was impressed and astounded by the fitness industry in Kuwait.

It was fantastic to see such enthusiasm for the industry with lots of gyms, sports clubs and other health and fitness services being available yet I was taken back by one thing in particular. It seemed that many so called ‘fitness instructors’ working in gyms weren’t actually qualified and were typically people with a passion for exercise and a bit of gym experience, perhaps they’d lifted some weights a few times. Now, in many ways, this is the perfect route into the industry but it’s so important for instructors to be fully qualified.

Running a UK based training company in the fitness industry; I know how important it is for fitness clubs and businesses to ensure that their staffs are properly trained. Not only is it a legal requirement in the UK, it ensures:

• That clubs are being represented professionally by their staff and that staff have the knowledge, competency and confidence to do their jobs with excellence• That all communications to members and clients are delivered with consistency. It can be highly confusing for members to receive conflicting information from different instructors which would almost certainly reflect badly on the organization• That staff have the base knowledge to be able to adapt, learn and take on other specialist areas that can help the club stay innovative and fresh in a fast paced industry• That staff, when undergoing regular training are up to date with the latest training methods, industry trends and research• Staff develops excellent communication skills to help them excite and motivate clients improving results of members. This skill set is probably one of the most important when it comes to supporting gym members or personal training clients, the ability to listen, coach and guide

Having spent 10 days out in Kuwait, I had the pleasure of training up a team of Personal Trainers who, within just a few short of time were fully booked up and already seeing great results with clients and there is huge growth already happening. On a tight marketing budget, this has all been down to good training and solid structure within a delivery model. Not only were we able to provide training and qualifications to the fitness team, we were able to work with the organization to develop a training model so that, irrespective of the instructor, the style of training and structure behind it was uniform and consistent.

In a fast emerging market, it’s the perfect time to establish a strong development strategy for staff so that businesses in the health and fitness sector are not only able to compete but truly stand out above their competition.

Redesign Your

Home & YourHeart

With the arrival of the holy month of Rama-dan— arguably one of the busiest as well as the most spiritually satisfying months of the year—we not only look forward to welcom-ing important guests but also take time to enjoy the company of our loved ones with the routine gatherings that we conduct at home. This is one period where we host most of our get-togethers be it for family, friends, or even acquaintances. Ramadan is a time of joy & celebration. It is a time to share with your nearest and dearest. During this auspicious occasion a redesign, a renovation, or even a simple rearrangement can not only make the coming days more exciting but can also give a feeling of real comfort.

Redesigning your entire home during Rama-dan might be a natural thing for some, but for people who are budget conscious it’s usu-ally best to stick to a nice rearrangement of the original layout. Either way the ultimate goal is to have your homes prepared for Ra-madan wherein they radiate peace, serenity, and comfort to both dwellers and visitors. Kuwait’s most restyled interiors in the month of Ramadan are the Dewaniyas, living rooms, and the dining rooms. These are usually sites to many reunions, social events, and private gatherings. You can even restyle your bed-rooms to make them seem more relaxing and soothing and to make you feel even more at ease and at home. After all, we’ve all waited patiently in our rooms for the iftar cannon to sound! The best way to approach such rear-rangements is by combining colors that are synergized in both color-forming elements and in fillers. With the right blend of colors, the room will look good while giving a touch of beauty that makes you feel at home—don’t be surprised if you find yourself linger-ing around a little longer. Below are a few tips that can help you start re-imagining your rooms for Ramadan:

1. If you’re redesigning, try to incorporate more Islamic or geometric designs in the space.

2. This season’s favorite colors are Gold, Red, Blue, Mustard, and Navy Blue colors. Try to exploit these combinations to suit your style & personality, while still staying on trend.

3. For those who want to give a new look with-out changing the sofas or the existing furni-ture, you can augment the feel of your space by changing the upholstery or by organizing more of cushions or pillows. You can even in-clude a new throw to match that of the exist-ing sofa and give it a slightly new look.

4. Redecorate the space by inserting a few up-holstered puffs. This will not cram the space with unnecessary furniture whenever parties are scheduled for the night.

5. If you want to accommodate more seating you can remove the centre table or coffee table and try to position your console to one corner of the room. This way, the sweets can still be available and allow seating space in the room.

6. Another idea is to replace the centre table with side tables and scatter them around the seating area.

7. If you have an unused space, consider us-ing it for an Arabic seating scheme of having large floor cushions in the corner.

8. Lanterns are central to conveying the warm Ramadan spirit. Reestablish the Ramadan mood by including more of the ‘Fanous’ or Ar-abic style lanterns at the entrance, in corners, or as a table center piece.

The holy month of Ramadan is a time for contemplation and specifically for deep in-ner reflection. It is a time for devotion and for self control. However, the critical aspect is whether our hearts are tuned to it and to ask ourselves if an exterior change brings an interior change as well. It is important that if one wants to decorate their house, it should be with good deeds in this holy month, and we should adorn our hearts with the unseen decorations which none can see except Al-lah. Let us decorate our souls with the good qualities of Salah (prayers) and with plenty of Zakat (remembrance of Allah). How about we color your days with lots of recitation of the Holy Qura’an? We should always remember that actions speak louder than words, so if you want to make the world beautiful what a better way than by starting at home.

Fine Living with Asma Al-MullaAl-Hamra Mall & Tower: Living the High-Life

One of the many great qualities Kuwait and Kuwaitis are known for is our love of fashion, luxury, and impeccable taste! We are nothing if not champion shoppers and trendsetters. Now, I know that Kuwait is graciously filled with many different malls and shopping options for all tastes, budgets, and lifestyles but, when it comes to finding luxury, exclusivity, and the pulse of the Kuwaiti soul, look no further than the stunning Al-Hamra.

Right in the very heart of Kuwait City, Al-Hamra’s distinguished towering figure is hard to miss and even harder to forget. The twisted, oddly shaped structure of Al-Hamra alongside its record-breaking height makes it immediately stand out among the surrounding buildings and streets and attracts the eye with wonder and awe at its powerful, yet highly exclusive, one-of-a-kind presence. The minute you lay your eyes on this magnificently structured, feat of architecture and creativity, you know you are in for a special experience.

Upon entering Al-Hamra this feeling of luxury meets innovative creativity only increases as your eyes will be immediately flooded with beautiful incandescent lighting, high-end marble floors, and luxurious touches surrounding you at every corner. Home to some of Kuwait’s and the world’s most exclusive brands and businesses, it is easy for any local fashionista to get lost in this impeccable, shopping wonderland. The collection of brands and shops which Al-Hamra holds is surely enough to satisfy any taste and will fill everyone’s closets with the best the world can offer. You honestly cannot keep your hands off all these beautiful, world-class products! Plus, the sheer surrounding ambiance of exclusivity and prestige that Al-Hamra puts you in is definitely a recipe for any and all shoppers to live the high life at its very best!

Once you’re done with your glamorous shopping spree or if you just need a quick break to regroup, Al-Hamra Mall also houses a number of decadent, trendy coffee shops and restaurants to round out your shopping experience. You will be sure to find a classy locale for some calming alone time, amazing food, or some pleasant conversation with your fellow shopping buddies!

If you’re not in a shopping mood (yes, those happen sometimes), you can always relax and grab one of the many box office hits in Al-Hamra’s equally stunning and luxorious Grand Cinema movie theater. If you’re looking for some totally Zen, quiet, alone time then Al-Hamra has you covered there as well! Your one-stop to tranquility and relaxation is located right in Al-Hamra Thermae—a luxury health club and spa with a variety of services and packages that will immediately lift your spirits and re-energize you when you need it most!

With all these numerous reasons to shop, eat, relax, and enjoy the high life to the fullest, Al-Hamra is definitely my choice for unparalleled luxury and is truly the peak example of Kuwait’s marvelous ability to combine art, convenience, style, and endless prestige into one beautiful, unforgettable, unique place.

They Live Where They Love

In many ways, Dr. Tarek Abdul Tawab is a product of Kuwait. Raised here since early childhood and now living here with his loving family and children, Dr. Tarek is an accomplished, highly successful Orthopedic Surgery Consultant and an esteemed professional in his field. He now works at the New Mowasat Hospital and runs his own clinic—Tarek Abdul Tawab Clinic—which boasts of an impressive reputation of great patient care. He is a man of great talents which exceed beyond medicine and into the world of photography. Many of these realized dreams and ambitions are due, in great part, to Dr. Tarek’s life in Kuwait and the opportunities Kuwait has given him to be the inspiring individual he is today.

Where are you from?I am an Egyptian.

When did you come to Kuwait? My parents moved to Kuwait in the late fifties, so I have enjoyed a Ku-waiti upbringing since my first smile up until I finished high school. At that point I moved to join the Faculty of Medicine in Cairo, and several years later I moved to England for my specialization. Now, here I am after 25 years returning to Kuwait.

What do you do?

I am an Orthopedic Surgery Consultant with a specialty in Arthroscop-ic Keyhole surgeries of the joints and sports injuries.

Why did you choose Kuwait as your home?Kuwait was luckily chosen for me being a second generation expat. However, I had to take the decision to return to Kuwait after many long years of leaving because of the particular charm of this dear place.

What do you love most about Kuwait? To me, Kuwait is my childhood in every sense of the word. It is also a wonderful place to raise a family and enjoy a safe, comfortable and stable lifestyle. I honestly count my blessings whenever I watch the turmoil occurring everywhere around us while we go on with our lives in Kuwait’s blessed, peaceful atmosphere.

What do you think of the Kuwaiti lifestyle and culture? The Kuwaiti life style is a part of the Arabic Islamic culture, so this is

where we feel comfortable raising our children and observing our tra-ditions. When you are an expat like me you really feel the joy of having roots in two places that are fed with the same cultural morals. You enjoy the richness of the place without feeling homesick.

How much of an impact has Kuwait had on your life? There is no denying that I am a product of what my childhood in Ku-wait is. I was brought up by my hardworking, generous father, who was honestly a supporting father-figure to all those who knew him. To realize myself as a successful hard working doctor with a wonderful and supporting family must be the fruit of my life in Kuwait.

What have you gained from Kuwait and given Kuwait?Kuwait now gives me a wonderful, stable upbringing for both my chil-dren and I. In Kuwait, I have seen my successful career moving forward and I am trying my best to repay this in my own practice by creating an honest, sympathetic environment for all my patients. That is, after all, my share to give in this community.

What does Kuwait mean to you on a personal level?I personally believe that Kuwait has shaped me in a way that made it almost impossible for me to live anywhere else. Kuwait is my home in so many different ways.

What words would you like to say to Kuwait if you could?I don’t know how someone can put his feelings of true love and devo-tion into words. These feelings are beyond words. A country where I spent most of my life and raising my kids in is my home, and I love my home. I love Kuwait!

How does Al-Salhiyah Clinic stand out among other clinics in Kuwait? The first impression most guests get about Salhiyah Clinic is that it does not feel like a clinic but rather a sanctuary—a cozy atmosphere that indulges the senses and makes you feel at home. Salhiya Clinic sets an example of refined prestigious design and unparalleled medical services, thus making it the finest boutique Clinic in the area.

What is the range of medical services that Al-Salhiya Clinic provides? We provide a full range of dental care, dermatology & skin care, as well as family medicine.

Tell us about your medical staff. How does your team of doctors and licensed professionals distinguish itself? Our staff is highly experienced in what they do and our core mission is to make our guest “feel at home” at all times. At Salhiyah Clinic,

the staff takes great pride in creating a rapport and trust with their patients. The common view point shared by the staff is to treat our patients in exactly the same way as they themselves would want to be treated.

Is there a specific atmosphere or ambiance you aim to achieve for your patients? From the moment one enters, it’s very apparent how different Salhiyah Clinic is. Instead of a clinical appearance, it has a warm cozy atmosphere. People normally feel nostalgic from all the Kuwaiti antiques, as well as all the memorabilia hanging on the walls. Most guests are usually delighted to walk around and be visually stimulated by their surroundings. Often, the topic of interest is how the old artifacts have been combined with the futuristic aspects of technology. Staff and guests alike really love this contrast. The goal is make sure the guests experience as pleasurable an experience as possible, so creating a comfortable and non-evasive environment plays a key role. It often happens that guests linger around for a while after their services just to enjoy the antiques, the pictures, and the generally calming ambiance.

In your opinion, what are the elements that make for a great medical experience?A welcoming ambiance throughout the clinic which is conducive to

wellbeing; thoughtfully designed services to meet patients’ needs across all age group and health conditions; a team of highly-qualified specialist physicians and nurses with a wealth of experience to administer therapeutic services and treatments; and attention to detail.

What inspires Al-Salhiya Clinic to grow and enhance itself further? The breakthrough in medical sciences, health and wellness has exploded in recent years. These are the most exciting times within the medical field as new aesthetic and prosthodontic methods keep pushing boundaries all the time. As the science grows, so too will Salhiyah Clinic. Ultimately, we always want to provide the latest medical procedures as well as first class service to our guests.

Do you have any special campaigns or exclusive services on the horizion?Salhiyah Clinic is the perfect place to seek integrated treatments. We encourage people to come in and let us create a healthcare plan around their needs so that they not only feel great, but look great too! Our special campaign centers around weight loss, general checkup, anti-aging treatments and cosmetic dentistry.

What are your larger goals and visions for Al-Salhiya Clinic in the future?

The larger vision at Salhiyah Clinic is to be a key contributor towards the community in and around Kuwait City. To be there consistently and efficiently in all that we do—ensuring our patients can depend on us and grow with us.

Where do I start? How do I begin to tell this story? How can I compel my tongue to re-tell the tales of barren live, of children running bare-footed on hard, hot ground in 40 degree summers? Yes, this is Djibouti—an African land that strongly resembles Kuwait in time, heat, and timezone. But Djibouti is poverty stricken. Djibouti is forgotten. Djibouti is devoid of all life and vitality but for the seas that surround it! I first went to Djibouti to take part in humanitarian aid projects, which were a great love of mine. I had been keen on joining such a humanitarian effort outside of Kuwait for some time now because I was already an active member of Kuwait's local humanitarian and social awareness communities, and I was interested in expanding my humanitarian outreach globally. Finally, after two years God granted me the good fortune of taking this dream trip with Mercy International and with the Kuwaiti Medical Student Association who organized all the journey details.

It wouldn’t be an overstatement to say that, in this small country, I saw overwhelming wonders. An entire population living under the poverty line, in unstable houses made of rocks and stones, without even a drop of cement to keep it together. Upon entering these houses the interior is as suffocating and hot as a boiler oven—I could only wonder how these people can manage to live and sleep in these structures knowing that the roof could collapse upon them at any moment. I wondered how they could sleep at night in pitch darkness without a single source of light—relying only on the casting moonlight to guide their paths. I wondered how they could travel to the further city areas for food and water without cars, bicycles, or transportation—only feet clothed in old, worn, ripped slippers to carry them.

The children in Djibouti smiled at all times, their smiles only widening and growing whenever I would give them some humble sweets. They would all lovingly embrace me as a sign of gratitude. I saw the Djibouti children and I thought of how our children behave on Gergi'an and how they are only satisfied with the most expensive and upscale brands of sweets and chocolate. At that point, only one thought came to mind: Al-Hamdu-li-Allah... Thank you, God, for bestowing such bounties on us and may they last for us and multiply at your will. For Kuwait is a land of good; a land of giving; and a land of love. Kuwait is the land which selflessly gives without ever asking in return. From our youngest to our oldest, we are born with this sense of kindness and generosity towards all others. So, in Ramadan—the holiest, most cherished month of all—don't forget to give. Don't forget to donate and cut down on food. Don't forget to teach your children patience and contentment and teach them not to play with their food. Don't forget to teach them to love to give. We are all blessed with beautiful lives so why not make them even more beautiful for the orphaned, the wounded, and the desperately needy? In doing so, may Allah keep us all safe and prosper in the bounties of Kuwait and Islam inshallah.

"This is Djibouti."

Gummy Smile / Excessive Gum Appearance.A great smile can make all the difference when you want to look your best. It reflects confidence, a vibrant personality, and also speaks to the credibility of a person's character. Therefore a great appearance of anterior teeth with a healthy gum contouring can potentially have a significant psychological and emotional impact on the individual. It is possible that during normal growth and development too much gum tissue forms around the teeth. A gummy smile is apparent when the gum line appears to be creeping down over the teeth, making them appear shorter.

Causes of a Gummy Smile:Three major etiologies: -Delayed tooth eruption.-Hyperactivity of the facial muscle that controls the movement of the upper lip causing it to rise up higher than normal. -Vertical excess in jawbone growth.

Treatment of a Gummy Smile:Different options are available depending on the severity of the case:-Laser therapy.-Plastic/orthognatic surgery: surgical lip and/or jawbone reposition-ing.-Orthodontics: braces to move teeth into more suitable positions.-Esthetic crown lengthening: surgical sculpting of the gingival tissues and bone.

Esthetic Crown LengtheningIt is the most commonly done procedure in dental setting to treat a gummy smile. Its goal is to establish proper gingival contours while exposing the complete crown of the tooth, hence creating healthier

and attractive gum contours. During this procedure, excess gum and bone tissue is reshaped to expose more of the natural tooth. A bal-anced and brighter esthetic smile is generated which provides higher self-confidence for many patients. This procedure does not induce gum recession or future periodontal problems. In many instances, it allows practitioners adequate room to place a quality final restora-tion such as crowns, veneers or lumineers. The final outcome is longer looking teeth and a winning smile.

The American Academy of Periodontology states that the benefits of crown lengthening procedures include increased comfort and confi-dence when smiling, eating, and speaking, as well as improved gum health.

Eat, Enjoy, & Have a HealthyRamadan!

The holy month of Ramadan is here and, with this wonderful time of year, many temptations come with it! However, despite contrary belief, Ramadan is actually the perfect opportunity to embark on a diet. Ramadan is about the cleansing of the human soul, so why not make it a whole endeavor and put in some healthy eating as well? If you put in the effort, it is absolutely possible to maintain your health, lose weight, and still enjoy the tasty foods associated with this great month!

Fitoor:Your body has been fasting for several hours without any liquids or solids. Therefore the first thing that needs to be consumed is a food rich in energy, gentle on the stomach, and easy to digest. The ideal food would be dates.

In this case it is best to follow the Sunna of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) and break your fast with 3 dates.

Dates: The nutritious treasures of the East

• They are rich in minerals such as iron, zinc, potassium, calcium and magnesium. All of which are essential in restoring and replenishing electrolyte and mineral balance in your body after a fast.

• They are a high glycemic index food (GI 103). This basically means that they have an immediate boosting effect on your blood glucose levels. After fasting your blood sugars will be very low, so the high GI foods will immediately raise your blood sugar levels back to normal, re-energizing your brain and body.

Follow your dates with water to fully replenish your body’s fluid and mineral balance.

Many believe that because we are fasting we must nourish our body by eating heavy foods during Fitoor. This is belief is absolutely wrong; on the contrary it is recommended by nutrition experts and internists across the globe to eat a balanced healthy variety of foods in reasonable quantities. This is because when you are fasting your body’s basal metabolic rate (speed at which it burns calories) becomes slower than usual; so a balanced intake of food in moderate quantities is sufficient enough to keep you healthy, active and lean during Ramadan. In addition, your body has a clever way to adapt itself to fasting by activating regulatory mechanisms that will ensure efficient utilization of body fat during this month.

So the secret to maintaining or losing weight during Ramadan? Work with your basal metabolic rate, not against it! Eat more variety but less quantity.

Remember, a balanced diet will also greatly improve your blood

Page 43: Issue 14

41

cholesterol and lipid levels. It will also help prevent constipation and related digestive problems that many face, while also helping you lead a more energetic, active lifestyle.

The million dollar question is this: what can a person eat to maintain a healthy weight during Ramadan, and maybe possibly lose some too?

Your main metabolic fuel source for bodily function during fasting is mainly fat. Excellent! Therefore, your diet should be varied, small portioned but nutrient dense, and eaten systematically. Do not eat everything at one sitting; in fact having small consistent meals will trick your body into speeding up it’s metabolic rate. In addition it will help increase nutrient absorption and stabilize blood sugar levels.

During Fitoor:Break your fast with water and 3 dates as I have mentioned above. Sprinkle in half a lemon into your water to stimulate your liver into action. Limonene helps speed detoxification. Then I suggest you take a small break by praying, as this will give your GI tract time to gently process. Now, your main Fitoor meal should contain: a gentle vegetable soup such as mint and courgette, a type of complex carbohydrate such as brown rice, and a protein source such as fish.

Snacks: This is the fun part.

• Have a colorful, rich bowl of salad vegetables and greens such as kale, mint, tomatoes, and colored peppers. Add in apple cider vinegar to help cleanse your liver and good fats such as avocado oil.

• Tempting as the kubbas and sambousaks are, try to limit them to 1 or 2 pieces. Another great idea is bake them in the oven instead of deep-frying them.

• Desserts are equally tempting but there’s no need to abolish them completely. Limit your dessert to one piece or one pot a day if it is muhallabiya.

Fruit Juices:• Ramadan drinks are delicious and tempting and, if done right (such as Khoshaf), some are nutritious. However, try to limit them to one glass a day, and try as hard as you can not to have it during meal times. This will cause indigestion; instead have it either before Fitoor to break your fast, or during snack time—let’s say just before Taraweeh prayers. This way you will enjoy your drink and you’ll avoid feeling bloated at the same time.

Sihoor:Complex carbohydrates and fiber rich foods are especially important. Complex carbohydrates such as wholegrain bread, barley, oats, lentils, and brown rice will help your body release its energy slowly during the hours of fasting, thus giving you a balanced energy level. Fiber rich foods are also slowly digested and will actually help you feel fuller in lesser quantities. These are very useful to eat during sihoor.

Try to avoid eating excessive amounts of high sugar foods as these will wreck havoc on blood sugar levels, spiking them up and down. Not to mention they are heavily laden with calories and saturated fat.

Remember the key to health is moderation, try to have that balance during Ramadan and you will most definitely reap the wonderful benefits. Happy Ramadan everyone!

Being a Nutritional Therapist in the UK, I am reminded time and time again by my clients of just how little the general population understands nutrition and healthy eating. It is a very complex subject and the more you delve into it, the more complex it becomes. That said, you don’t need to be a brain surgeon or a rocket scientist to make healthy choices and benefit from a well balanced diet.

Around 2009, the Food Standards Agency in the UK brokered an agreement that many food outlets signed up to whereby better food labeling and calories were included on menus. This has supported a very positive step towards people being more conscious about what they’re actually eating and better informed when making choices that are healthier and balanced. But it doesn’t stop here. Being more open on menus not only puts the customers in a better position, it’s a way of becoming more honest, showing to the customers and the world that

Restaurants & Nutrients

there is nothing to hide and developing a much greater level of trust between the company and the customer. As simple as it may be, by adding nutritional information onto menus actually changes the commercial positioning of the restaurant. It changes it from being a place to eat food to an authority on nutrition.

By relating the breakdown of each meal and the overall calorie consumption to what is the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA), you are giving people so much more than just providing a place of eating.

On a recent trip to Kuwait, I noticed that many food outlets lacked this information and in my mind, commercially they are missing a trick. An opportunity to develop a stronger relationship with their customer base. It also provides a way of measuring the changes in your menus as you amend and update it. For example, it maybe that your menu is now %20 healthier with

less salt and sugar than it has been previously. How would you know this without having kept information on your meals? It’s almost a promotional campaign in itself to tell people that your brand new menu is all of a sudden much better for them.

And thinking about it, the benefits don’t stop there. It also provides for a much more educated team of chefs who are conscious of this information and when it comes to updating or changing the menu, they’re making decisions with this information in mind.

In a world where open information is becoming increasingly in demand, it’s key that restaurants and the food industry take this topic seriously and use it as an opportunity to better their commercial prospects. I’m absolutely delighted to be working with a top chef in supporting restaurants across GCC states in upping their game.

Pharma Tips What Time Should I Take My Medicine?: Perfect Timing Makes Drugs More EffectiveWhile millions of us take medicine daily, few of us pay close attention to the time of day at which we take it. When it comes to conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis and heartburn, the time you have your medication can have a significant impact on its effectiveness and how well it protects you.

How!The key is the circadian rhythm: our -24hour internal clock driven by the brain’s hypothalamus gland. This controls not only the immune system but also blood pressure, body temperature, hormone production, bowel movements, and tiredness.

So what’s the best time to take your medication?

OSTEOPOROSISThe most commonly prescribed drugs for osteoporosis are

bisphosphonates, which prevent the loss of bone mass.

Issue: They are poorly absorbed

When: You need to take it first thing in the morning with water on an empty stomach after a night of not eating. Then you must remain in an upright position and wait for an hour before taking any other pills or before eating and drinking.

HIGH BLOOD PRESSUREIssue: Sleep-time blood pressure is best reduced to lower risks of angina, stroke and heart attack

When: It is usually best to take one of the anti hypertensive medication at night before going to bed. If your blood pressure medicine works for 24 hours then it should be taken at night. Blood pressure medications that work for 12-8 hours should be taken first thing in the morning to be most effective in warding off a heart attack.

Those who now take their pills

in the morning should not begin taking them at night without speaking with their doctor. This can cause risk of nocturnal hypotension (abnormally low blood pressure) which could increase the risk of stroke.

ALLERGY MEDICINEIssue: Allergy symptoms are usually worst in the morning.

When: Whether obtained via prescription or OTC, allergy medicine is most effective when taken at night. By taking allergy medicine at night it's at its peak in your system, so in the morning it will be ready to combat allergy symptoms.

ARTHRITISIssue: Patients find their joint pain is at its worst in the afternoons.

When: It’s better to take pain killer like Ibuprofen around noon to mid-afternoon, so that it takes effect as symptoms begin to build up.

RHEUMATOID ARTHRITISIssue: Patients find their joint pain is worst in the mornings.

When: For Rheumaoid Arthritis, it’s usually better to take a pain killer just after your evening meal to prevent or lessen any pain which may develop overnight.

HIGH CHOLESTEROLIssue: Most of our cholesterol is produced at night, while we are not eating.

When: Take Statin medications at bedtime to avoid the synthesis of the bad cholesterol (LDL) at night. This will lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

HEART MEDICATIONIt’s been known that heart attacks and strokes are three times more likely to happen in the morning than any other time of the day, but until now the reasons for why this happens are unclear.

Issue: The heart’s electrical impulses are slowest from 6 AM to noon. This makes the heart more likely to get out of rhythm and thus increases the risk of a heart attack. When: Take heart medications first thing in the morning to decrease your risks of heart complications.

HEARTBURNIssue: The general advice is to take proton-pump inhibitor medication 30 minutes before the first meal of the day, but the truth is that heartburn can be exacerbated by lying down at night.

When: Take the medication 30 minutes before your evening meal and some researchers suggests splitting the daily dose. Taking half the dose in the morning then half in the evening will likely keep symptoms at bay at all times.

DON’T FORGET!Any time you are prescribed medication, always ask your doctor and/or pharmacist when the most effective time to take the drug is, if they don't volunteer that information first. Consistently taking your medicine at the right time of day will enable the drugs to produce the most effective results for your illness and will help you feel much better, much faster, all day long!

Anmar is CookingWelcome back Ramadan!

I've missed you and I bet everyone else has too!

The month of spirituality has come around and what better way to celebrate it than with special Kuwaiti dishes cooked in this holy month?

Though people have changed and life has a faster pace, these special dishes have been custom to Ramadan and have been passed down through generations.

My grandmother passed these mouthwatering dishes down to my mother, and I captured the opportunity to learn them. Here I am, cooking Harees, Yireesh and Tashreeb, the everyday dishes found on every Ku-waiti dining table when the sun sets.

Traditionally, these three dishes are sent to family, friends and neighbors and are called "Niqsa". The next day, the courtesy is returned.

Are you ready for Ramadan nights?الشهر عليكم ومبارك وعافية هني

THE STUNNER

Nouf Al-Qemlas needs no introduction. She is, in herself, a statement on fashion, class, and decadence. When she started to join the fashion world three years ago and created her own line—Zari Tir Tir—she left a visible mark in Kuwait’s fashion community. Her designs and her persona were immediately synonymous with elegance and unique, culturally inspired beauty. She is now one of Kuwait’s foremost Kaftan and fashion designers and she enjoys a booming customer-base and a soaring reputation of excellence and high-esteem. We had to have a chat with this powerhouse fashionista and find out more from her on what it takes to create such a successful and exceptional fashion enterprise like Zari Tir Tir!

When did you start your fashion business? I started it around 3 years ago. It all began when I was searching for a unique, beautiful kaftan for my little girl and I, and when I couldn’t quite find what I was looking for I just decided to do it myself and design my own kaftans.

2. Who was your support system? Everyone in my family was so wonderful and really stood by me—especially my mother and my husband.

3. Why did you choose fashion design as your line of work? I was a fashion-lover and was interested in everything that had to do with fashion since childhood! It was always a great hobby of mine and now it’s my work, and I love it!

4. How was your experience at the start? It was great for a first step and I always tried my hardest to make it grow. I know that the more time I spend on the business the more I’m going to improve it and learn more from it every day.

5. What steps lead you to open a shop in the Avenues?

Well, I was on the lookout for the best location possible. The Avenues is, without a doubt, the best and most popular shopping mall in Kuwait, so it was an obvious choice.

6. You are such a great mother and an accomplished business woman. How do you manage the time?By working very hard! I also couldn’t have done it without the help of my husband by my side.

7. What advice would you give to people who want to take the private business step but are in need of inspiration or support?

I was honestly very scared of taking those first steps. Over time I’ve realized that I should have done this a long time ago and that there was nothing to be truly afraid of. I really wish everyone would go after their dreams whenever they can. It’s the best feeling and it’s never too late for anyone!

8. What comes first in your life?

My family and my children.

9. What inspires you to create new collections? Well, actually, everything. Life is so full of beautiful and wonderful things to capture our hearts and our imaginations. I’m constantly inspired by everything I see around me!

10. Do you only do a Ramadan collection or do you design for all seasons? We provide a collection for all seasons, not just Ramadan.

11. Tell us about your shop in the avenues. It's a small yet unique shop where you can find your pick of beautiful accessories, kaftans, dresses, and home accessories done by some very talented designers.

12. You are such a stunning and fashionable lady! Give our readers a beauty tip. Your inner beauty reflects on you. Work on making your heart and soul beautiful and it will shine out and dazzle everyone around you!

Aseel Al-Ruwaished took a trip to India—and the rest, as they say, was history. Enamored by all the color and pulsating life of the people, places, and sounds which poured out of Goa, Aseel found instant inspiration in an Indian wonderland. She found the most striking emblem of this wondrous journey was one of India’s most time-honored, respected, cultural icons of all time: the mighty elephant. Overtaken with this surge of creative impulse, Aseel decided to start her own fashion line inspired by all the beauty and charm which India had to offer and, in admiration for India’s greatest cultural landmark, she called it ‘Elephant Girl.’ Much like the unique, vibrant life force of this exotic, far-away land, Aseel has come up with a collection of Kuwaiti kaftans and dresses which dramatically and beautifully blends these two worlds and emerges with an ornate, lively, and memorable expression of cultural zest and contemporary presence.

We had the chance to chat with Aseel and learn more about her exciting journey, her budding talent, and why she is the designer to watch out for this Ramadan season!

Tell us a little about yourself.I am a fashion junkie who is easily inspired. I love sports, travelling, burgers and excess baggage. I am currently working at Ahli Bank of Kuwait as a Credit Officer, learning the ins and outs of the finance world.

When and how did your love for fashion design begin?I feel that everyone is a fashion designer—it’s an instinct! The way you put together an outfit alone can be considered as an art form. I have recently been to India and, during my trip, I became inspired to start my own line which has a little bit of me in every piece.

Do you have a special process for coming up with your creations?Honestly, I don’t think about it so much. I just work as the ideas come to me and I do little modest sketches for the tailors.

What do you think is your trademark, one-of-a-kind design touch or quality?I would have to say the elephant, it’s my logo and is on most of my designs.

How did the idea for this specific line come about and what inspired it to grow?I had been to Goa, India in February for the first time, and as I wandered in the local flea market I was inspired by all the fabrics, colors, and prints. As soon as I got back I started to work on the Elephant Girl line.

What aspects of Indian culture did you incorporate into the designs? The elephants have really inspired me. I chose the colors of all the different nature

and spices I saw and felt there. I also chose Indian fabrics with all the exotic prints and the detailed embroideries of the dancing water girls in Goa.

How were you able to bring a contemporary design approach to such an ancient, revered culture? The culture of India has been adopted from all the wonder that surrounded them—things like the beauty in the landscapes and the animals roaming around in the streets. So I decided to blend the traditional Kuwaiti dara’a (the kaftan) with stories of the gods and nature in India to create a whole new interpretation.

What is the vibe and the ambiance that you want to convey through this new line?A great collection is only possible if you have a theme in your designs. I think the elephant was a huge success and I think that will also be present in my new line.

Where can we find your designs in Kuwait?Very soon my line will be available at a new pop up store in Kuwait and a beautiful boutique in the UAE. I am hoping to be less of an amateur and start selling in India.

Give us a sneak peak of your next design inspiration! What other artistic creations do you have in store? Next collection will include some beads and accessories I am working on which will be made in India. I have teamed up with some suppliers I met with on my trip and I am hoping to go bigger and add more variety but to stay with the same theme.

KaftanKrazy!

Since this season’s outfit making accessory is the statement necklace, making it the centerpiece of your outfit is always a big hit. A Kaftan with a simpler color palette and style arrangement will greatly compliment and contrast a powerful statement necklace.

Be daring and experiment, but always remember one of the most important rules in all fashion: Less is more.

• If your Kaftan has a lot of details at the neckline, simply add a statement cuff or a statement ring for perfectly balanced bling flare.

If you are feeling less bold or if you think you are not a jewelry person, you can make an equally powerful statement in your own subtle way by layering.

Beaded, ornate belts will draw plenty of attention to your Kaftan, but make sure they coordinates. To pull off this accessory it is usually best if the Kaftan is simple, plain, and single colored to make the belt stand out more.

A ‘WOW!’ accessory can be a focal point of your Kaftan look. If you want to truly make a statement think about including it in your next Kaftan outfit.

When did you establish March Eleven?I established it last Ramadan and, thankfully, it’s been going strong ever since.

Why did you choose March Eleven as the name for your bran?Well, for a few reasons. First, I guess choosing a date as a logo and brand name was something that, at the time, was still new and no one had really used it before—so I wanted to be special in that way. Second, it’s my birthday so it personifies me somehow. And, third, I’ve always thought that 3 was my lucky number, so I had to include it. Plus, the business seemed like such a great birthday present to give myself!

Where do you get the textiles to make the kaftans?I mostly get them from Kuwait, Qatar, and Thailand. Wherever I can find great quality and interesting fabrics, really!

What inspires you to design the kaftans?I’m honestly inspired by almost everything I see. I love colors, art, and different designs. I also really love to mix and match, and to just see what works and what doesn’t. My sketchpad is with me wherever I go, so whenever I see something inspiring or get a new design idea I instantly sketch it down right there in that same minute.

Why did you choose to design traditional clothing like kaftans instead of more 'modern' dresses? Well, to be honest, I don’t think my kaftans are all traditional. Some of them are while others are extremely fashionable and modern. That’s the beauty of the kaftan. You can use it in so many ways and for so many tastes—whether it is traditional or not. The kaftan can work for all kinds of women and that’s what makes it timeless. We also hope to possibly start introducing dresses in our line in the future inshallah, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Do you have a store? If yes, where is it located? No, not yet. But perhaps in the future we will start taking steps toward that goal inshallah. How can people reach you to place orders?Customers can reach me through my contact number and we are also available on social media platforms like Instagram. Find us @march_eleven to see more of the collection and to get in touch!

Makeup is about enhancing one’s beauty. The more natural, the more beautiful the makeup will look, even if you are going for a dramatic effect. You can always stand out and be unique with natural colors by adding a subtle pop of color to it.

For this look I used medium to dark tones of brown and a pop of blue for the eyes. For the lips I went wtth a light maroon color to set off good contrast.

The Madly Yours foundation is perfect for the face with it’s simple yet beautiful finish that works well for everyday use. The beauty of it is that it does not have that full, heavy coverage yet it covers unwanted spots very well. I then used the Makeup Forever loose powder and Ben Nye banana powder for highlighting under the eye and cheek bone to give the face a beautifully balanced complexion. Nouba’s peach blush and the NYX peach bronze blush compliment this look very well and give a perfect glow.

For the eyes I used three shades from the Naked2 palette and two different tones of blue eye pencils from Golden Lady. I also used Ardell’s 120 false lashes which were highlighted by the Collestar 30 day treatment mascara for a fuller, longer lash look.

For the lips I used Mr & Mrs lip pencils in two tones: the light beige/peach and the dark maroon. I placed the lighter shade as a base and applied the dark maroon over, concentrating in the middle area of the lips.

Of course, before trying any of these tips it’s important to make sure your face is clean and moisturized before applying any makeup. For even better results try applying a primer to the face, eyes, and lips to make your face look even fresher and brighter!

What does ‘Vestiti’ mean and why did you choose it to represent your brand?Vestiti is the Italian word for ‘clothing.’ I’ve always loved Italy and especially the old, Italian lace dresses that are both so unique and beautiful yet so traditional and culturally meaningful. I wanted my creations to have the same effect so that’s why I chose the name.

What do you want your customers to feel when they wear Vestiti kaftans?I want them to feel distinguished and unique, but I also want them to feel comfortable and cultured at the same time.

Where does your design inspiration come from?It usually depends on the season. The colors are usually inspired by the seasonal time of year. Nature is probably by far the easiest and one of the best places to find inspiration. Our culture is also deeply inspiring and has a lot beautiful stories and sentiments that can be translated into fashion. Really, the whole world is bursting with inspiration and when I take the time to look at all of the breathtaking cultures of the world, I’m inspired by their uniqueness and their simple beauty.

What makes this new Ramadan line different from what you’ve previously done? This time around we have new kaftan designs and styles, as we always do. The key to updating every line is to keep the same basic elements that the customers love—culture, patterns, the cut—and then apply some new touches to make those elements shine in a new way. I think I’ve done that with this new line and I’m very excited about it!

How do you blend new, modern styles with traditional clothing like the kaftan?Well, one really great way to do this is to use old, cultural designs with new fabric materials and vice versa. Another way is to try to slightly

MARIAM AL-ASFOURIn Kuwait, the word Vestiti only means one thing: kaftans. Beautiful, ornate, vibrant kaftans! Traditionally speak-ing, the kaftan is probably one of Kuwait’s most glorified fashion symbols of dignified, decadent culture. For generation upon generation, the kaftan has spoken to our humble lifestyles and our poised natures. To Vestiti creator and head designer, Mariam Al-Asfour, this made the kaftan the best medium to celebrate the old while re-imagining the new. To Mariam Al-Asfour, Vestiti represents a new interpretation of a cherished, ancient culture that brings both a feeling of dignity and modernity to the wearer. For many years now, Vestiti has been selling this exclusive brand to its satisfied customers: a brand that honors the past and relishes the present. Now any Kuwaiti woman can count on Vestiti to provide her wardrobe with this perfect balance of contemporary design and tradi-tional appeal. We had the chance to chat with Mariam Al-Asfour about Vestiti and all that goes into her creation of this inspiring, Kuwaiti kaftan line.

re-interpret an old design in a way that makes it new or seem bold again. You can do this by mixing cultural patterns or by adding more than one styling quality in every piece. It can be tricky but the results are interesting and can turn out very chic!

We noticed that the fabrics and textiles are very luxurious. Where do you bring them in from?We have a really big world of materials in Kuwait! So, we supply our customers with fabrics and textiles from all over the world, depending on the kinds of garment they require. We use Indian, Turkish, and even local materials to bring a variety of luxurious textures to our customers.

Do you have a store where customers can find your designs? If yes, where?Yes, of course. You can find us at the Grey Fashion boutique in the ground floor of Al-Tejaria tower. We recommend you follow them on Instagram (@greyfashion) for all the latest, fashionable details!

Give us a sneak peak! What future design innovations do you have in store? As always, we’re going to continue to bring our customers the perfect mixture between cultural beauty and striking fashion. We want to try elevate our brand even more with even more daring ideas and luxuri-ous, one-of-a-kind materials. Stay tuned!

What is Zoo View?Zoo View is the first aviary in Kuwait specialized in breeding and raising different species of exotic birds such as Amazon parrots and Macaws. We are passionate about the birds and we specialize in pairing these birds with people who share our love for our avian friends. Zoo View cares about animals and we want to introduce this to the world in an educated way.

When did you start? The story began at an early age as a hobby and then it turned into an idea of breeding these rare exotic birds which are considered endangered. We established Zoo View in 2010 after we visited several farms and aviaries both in Europe and the United States. We gained a lot of experience in this field and we decided to share it with everyone in the form of our Zoo View Aviary. Now, thank God, we are treated as a well known name in this field—not only in Kuwait, but in the while GCC area. And we have an exclusive just for theCity magazine! We would like to announce the opening of our first Zoo View store which will include our lovely breeding birds, different kinds of pets, and pets supplies.

How does it work?We start by creating the perfect environment for the parrots by controlling the temperature and the percentage of the humidity needed at each and every season. After the female parrots lay their eggs, we closely monitor them under heavy surveillance to watch the behavior and the progress of the hatching process. We also do this to keep a record of every detail within each pair. Usually, we pull the babies after they are two weeks old, but in some cases we pull them from day one. Sometimes we have to pull the eggs if happen to we notice any bad behavior from the mother. At Zoo View we also have special care section which is equipped with incubators and breeders ready to receive the eggs and the babies. After that we start hand feeding the babies and raise them to socialize with people until they are fully weaned and ready to transition to their new homes. With each brand new baby, we provide birth certificate with DNA sexing certificate.

Where are the parrots from? Most of our breeding parrots came from South America, the United States, and Europe.

Tips about taking care of parrots? Different species of parrots require different care but, for all parrots, proper nutrition is vital in maintaining a good quality of life. Thankfully, most parrot diets are very similar. In general, parrot diets consist of fresh fruits and vegetables, parrot pellets, and a high quality of vitamin enriched parrot seed mix. For our parrots we use Golden Feast as the main source for a healthy diet which consists of %100 natural fruits, vegetables, and different kind of seeds and nuts. Owners also need to change their parrot’s water every day and need to keep the cage clean at all times. It’s also important to try to keep them in a well ventilated area, and where the sun light can reach them. The great things is that these lovely species are very friendly and love socializing with people, so it’s usually best to spend at least 15 minutes a day with them. These parrots come from rainy places and they absolutely love the rain! So don't forget to give them a nice shower every 4 days or whenever else they need it.

How can you teach a parrot to talk? When you first get your bird it’s important to speak often and immediately. Say specific words like ‘Hello,’ and ‘Hi.’ Repeat certain words every time you do something, such as when you lift your bird up—this teaches them to associate certain movements with certain word. Hold the bird in front of your mouth when you teach new words so that you have his/her full attention.

Finally, when they eventually do mimic you, reward them with a yummy treat!

Any tips about raising younger parrots? There are a lot of things that bird owners should keep in mind while raising a baby parrot. First, be sure to vary the food and treats—this keeps them healthier and open to new foods. Parrots love toys and they are playful creatures and, thankfully, there are many toy options available which can help them both play exercise at the same time. Second, try to spend as much time as you can with your parrots, especially at the beginning. This helps the parrot know you faster and start socializing with you easier –talk to them and they will start talking back at you! We provide a handy booklet written by us for every parrot owner and it contains all the necessary information and tips you’ll need to help raise and take a good care of your new baby parrot.

Also, we are always happy to answer any question any one may have, either by telephone or via SMS.

What is the best season for parrots and what are their prices? The best season for mating is the spring, sometime between December and May. The babies will usually be ready 3 months after the hatching day. As for the prices, it varies. Some of the parrots are very rare and the price can be as high as 5000 KD. However, the normal parrots can be as low as 150 to 200 KD for the African Grey; from 250 to 350 KD for the Yellow Crown Amazon and the Blue Front Amazon; from 550 to 650 KD for the Double Yellow Head Amazon; and 700 to 800 KD for the Yellow Nape Amazon which is considered as the best talker in his family. The prices can rise depending on the bird’s speaking ability, the size, intelligence level, tame level, and trick training.

In the midst of the summer heat, the long vacations, and our boundless energy for fun-in-the-sun we all need an outlet in these hot months. For the sporty, the adventurous, and the thrill-seekers among us that out-let is the First Trading Company. Offering everything

that both the adrenaline junkie and the athletic profes-sional could possibly require in clothing, footwear and ac-cessories, the First Trading Company is here to make your dreams come true without compromising on safety or on style. We had the chance to speak with the Business De-velopment Manager at the First Trading Company, Bindu Thomas, and to learn more from her on why the First Trad-ing Company has got you covered this summer!

Tell us a little about your company and the brands that you retail

First Trading Company is a subsidiary of Mutawa Alkazi Co. and offers a range of products including motorcycles, ATVs, generators, marine products, boats, accessories and gear. We recently launched a new showroom in Al Tilal Complex housing 3 international clothing brands – Fox, DC Shoes & Alpinestars Clothing.

What inspired you to bring these brands into Kuwait?

First Trading Co. has had a long association with motorsport enthusi-asts in this country as we are dealers of a number of leading brands like Hyosung & TVS motorcycles, Arctic Cat ATVs, Kipor generators, and Starcraft boats, and also sell motorcycle accessories and gear. Our association with Fox Racing goes back many years as we have been retailing their professional racing gear for nearly 25 years. How-

ever we wanted to increase the brand’s presence in Kuwait and also expand in terms of products on offer. Around the same time, we also associated with two other leading brands DC Shoes and Alpinestars clothing. All these brands have an international presence and while they have their roots in action sports, they also offer a great casu-al line. With the opening of this showroom we expand First Trading Company’s presence in Kuwait and significantly expand its field of op-erations, all of which are part of the company’s strategic vision.

Who is the main consumer and who do you market yourself to most?

I would say anyone who is energetic and loves action!

Firstly, since our products are constructed with such attention to detail and keeping high quality standards, it suits an active lifestyle.

Page 87: Issue 14

85

Our products also score high in terms of design and being on trend so our customers look good wearing them! Finally, these are statement brands and young people would be very proud to be seen in them.

What goes into the styling components of your products?

All the brands that we retail – Fox, DC and Alpinestars partner with world class athletes and professionals in a variety of fields such as ATV racing, motocross, marine sports, etc. This means when the prod-ucts are designed we have these guys in mind. So the products are very technical and performance driven while also keeping it stylish and trendy.

Can you give us some examples?

For instance, Fox Racing has the Tech tees which are extremely light and have a soft natural feel. They are great for Kuwait weather. Some styles also come with UV protection. Another product is the Hydro Series shorts which is designed to look like a walk short but functions like a board short. If you are planning a weekend at the chalet, this is a must have! The Bolted board short is one of our latest offerings. It comes with a 4 way stretch fabric which makes it very comfortable.

DC Shoes has some great products especially in footwear. The Versaf-lex 2 which we call a ‘Full Length Airbag’ is comfort at its best. At a price of 31 KD, it is also excellent value.

How do you maintain high quality and safety standards in your products?

All our brands are global brands and leading names in action sports as well as lifestyle categories. Our design and product teams work closely with professionals and customers to understand their needs. They are always trying to incorporate the latest fabrics, technology and design elements so that the products stay core to the brand im-age and are relevant to our customers.

You mentioned earlier about partnering with professional ath-letes. Are you sponsoring any local athletes?

We are sponsoring the Jet Ski champion, Mr. Abdulwahab Al Essa who is a professional jet skier. All these brands work closely with athletes at the international level and we want to do that here as well and part-ner with local promising athletes.

What are the different kinds of sports equipment that you provide and what are the highest selling ones in Kuwait?Apart from the clothing, we also have a racing section which has racing jerseys and pants, helmets, gloves, protective gear, etc. We get a lot of customers for helmets and protective gear such as deflectors, knee guards etc. as these are specialized and high quality products that deliver performance. Once the racing season begins, our gloves are a total sell-out!

How has the response been so far to this new venture? It has been encouraging. Most customers are excited to see these brands in Kuwait as many of them al-ready buy these brands. Apart from our customers, we have also got positive feedback from the press and bloggers in Kuwait. There have also been some product requests which we will definitely try to bring in the coming seasons.

If you could summarize your products in ten words or less what would they be?

I don’t need 10 words! It will be Stylish, Functional and Great Value.

Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari

The extra powerful Abarth 500, inspired by the impeccable Ferrari, is here in Kuwait! How excited are you? As for me the answer is super excited! This is a collaboration between Fiat and Ferrari that, to put it plainly, is nothing short of magnifi-cent. Combining the two separate, unique qualities of both brands and design aesthetics into one compact power punch like the Abarth 500 is an ingenious and, in many ways, untapped idea in the luxurious car market. Trust me, this little guy is nothing like any compact car you’ve ever seen!

The officially titled Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari can be found here in Kuwait at Al Mulla & Behbehani Motor Company, and with a title which is too long for us to repeat again. From now on it shall be referred to as the Angry500—a very apt name for such a tiny but powerful vehicle as this one.The Angry500 is a limited edition model dressed with Ferrari-inspired details such as carbon mirrors, front air intakes, red paint and some signature grey wheels. The whole look and feel of the Angry500 inspires the image of a small but lethal weapon; an aggressive, bad-ass gimp running amok in the Ferrari showroom just waiting to show you how much trouble they can get into.

Page 91: Issue 14

89

And, make no doubt about it, the Angry500 will definitely get you into plenty of delicious, adrenaline-packed trouble.

With a heavily upgraded version of the turbo'd 1.4-litre engine, the Angry500 now produces 180bhp and a ‘Record Monza' dual mode exhaust, which places it as the angriest and loudest 500 to date. The 0-62mph dash takes just 7s and it will top out at 140mph—this tiny fella can absolutely pack a mean punch for his size!

At this point, many of you are probably wondering just how much this combination of spunky supermini and Italian exotica is going to cost you. In Kuwait, the price is somewhere around the17,000 KWD range. Pricey for such a compact car but, in the end, it’s important to consider the fact that you are buying an authentic Ferarri produc-tion with all the high-end details that come with it. All these addi-tions and exclusive perks put the price right in the expected ballpark of such an exclusive Ferrari packaged ride as the super fun and super aggressive Abarth 695. We would like to thank the Sultan Center for allowing us the venue to shoot the Abarth 695 and to thank the Al-Mulla and Behbehani Motor Company for giving us the chance to test drive and take a closer look at this fiery little beast!

The new Porsche911 Turbo & Turbo S50 years ago, Porsche showed the first ever 911 at the Frankfurt International Auto Show. Ten years later, the first 911 Turbo prototype was showcased at the same auto show. Now, Porsche has revealed the new generation

911 Turbo and Turbo S based on the latest 991 model.

Under its wide and beautiful rear sits a -3.8liter six-cylinder Twin-Turbo charged engine with direct injection that produces 520 hp in

the Turbo model and 560 hp in the Turbo S model. Engines are now connected to a new Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel drive system. Porsche continues to be the only carmaker to offer two turbochargers with

variable turbine geometry for a petrol engine. Transmission to the drivetrain is through a seven-speed dual clutch transmission (PDK), featuring auto start/stop function. All these components together reduce

fuel consumption by up to 16 per cent to 9.7 l/100 km.

For even faster acceleration, Porsche developed a new PTM all-wheel drive system with electronically controlled and activated multi-plate coupling. The system is now equipped with a new water cooling function, so that it can direct even more drive torque to the front wheels if necessary. The new 911 2014 Turbo with the standard Sport Chrono Package Plus accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, which is one-tenth better than the value of the previous 911 Turbo S. The new 911 Turbo S sprints to 100 km/h in just 3.1 seconds. The car’s top speed is 318 km/h.

One of our favorite features of the new 911 Turbo is that it is now even wider than the Carrera 4 models by 28mm making it the widest body of all 911 cars. They feature a nearly level surface, about the width of a hand, between the C-pillar and the outer edge of the car body. Other differentiating characteristics include two-tone forged -20inch wheels – on the 911 Turbo S they have hub wheel locks. The 911 Turbo S also now features new full-LED headlightswith four-point daytime running lights and dynamic, camera-based main beam control, which is optional

for the 911 Turbo.

Another new improvement that we love is the introduction of rear axle steering in all turbo models whichimproves handling and racing performance. The system consists of two electro-mechanical actuators instead of the conventional control arms on the left and right of the rear axle. The steering angle of the rear wheels can be varied by up to 2.8 degrees, depending on vehicle speed. At speeds up to 50 km/h, when the front wheels are turned the system steers the rear wheels in the opposite direction. This actually corresponds to a virtual shortening of the wheelbase by 250 mm, which gives the 911 Turbo unrivalled performance in bends. The system lets the car turn faster into the bend and offers more dynamic steering response. This also simplifies maneuvering and parking. At speeds above 80 km/h, the system steers the rear wheels parallel to the turned front wheels. This is equivalent to a virtual lengthening of the wheelbase by a significant 500 mm and gives the sports car tremendous stability, especially at high speeds.

For the first time as well, Porsche developed an active aerodynamic system for the new 911 Turbo models. It consists of

a retractable three-stage front spoiler, whose segments can be pneumatically extended, and a deployable rear wing with three adjustable wing positions. This makes it possible to tune the aerodynamics of the 911 Turbo according to the driver’s demands for either optimal efficiency (speed position) or top dynamic performance. In the performance position, all segments of the front spoiler are fully extended and generate considerable downforce at the front axle. Similarly, the rear wing is extended to its maximum height with the greatest angle of attack, enhancing the downforce at the rear axle. Dynamic performance is improved to such an extent that lap times at the North Loop of the Nürburgring are improved by up to two seconds due to this system alone.

The interior of the new 911 Turbo and Turbo S is completely redesigned and now based on the new 911 Carrera range. Like on the previous models, the BOSE® Surround Sound System is installed as standard; and for the first time, the Burmester® High-End Surround Sound System is also available as an option. A radar-controlled cruise control system, camera-based road sign recognition and speed limit recognition are other new options being offered. The new 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Turbo S are available now for order in Kuwait and the GCC and customer deliveries are expected to start on September of this year for the Turbo S and January 2014 for the Turbo.

The basic retail price in Kuwait for the 911 Turbo Coupe is 43,700 KWD and the 911 Turbo S Coupe is available starting from 53,200 KWD.

Man of Steel was probably among the most anticipated films of the year. It is the first Superman movie to make it to the big screen since Superman Returns in 2006—which gained a less than enthusiastic reaction from the comic book fan base at the time. To be fair, I need to give you guys a disclaimer before I start the review: I have yet to read any of the Superman comics. It’s not that I don’t like comic books—I think they are a legitimate art form—I just have a hard time keeping up with them. Now back to the review. To sum up: I thought the movie was okay. It was a deeply flawed but it still provided sufficient entertainment and made for a relatively good time at the movies.

Considering that Zack Snyder directed, I did not expect plenty of and emotional attachment to characters. Snyder has already directed 300 and a wonderful adaption of Watchmen (a comic I’ve actually read this time). For all of it’s misgivings, however, Man of Steel was truly well shot. The action sequences were, predictably, very exciting. However, in true Snyder fashion, there’s a very noticeable lack of emotional development in the movie. While the emotional development isn’t entirely missing—you understand the characters, their motivations, and their actions do make sense in relation to their character—but you have a difficult time emotionally investing and connecting with the characters. Snyder was simply too focused on providing spectacle and somewhat forgets about the characters. The most noticeable example of this lack is how Superman himself is missing through most of the cinematic climax. Not that there’s anything particularly wrong with style over substance, I do think a movie can succeed with pure spectacle, but in the beginning of the movie Snyder establishes the film as a strong emotional experience, which can make the sudden switch to spectacle very jarring.

All in all, I still found Man of Steel enjoyable. I liked how we spend considerable time in Superman’s home planet, Krypton. I found it interesting to see how his home planet worked and where Superman powers had originated from. Michael Shannon is enjoyably over the top as Zod, however, he’s nowhere near as fun as Malcolm McDowell was. Ultimately, Snyder has an eye for cinematography and impressive action sequences are his strong suit. In talking to actual Superman fans about it, Man of Steel came out with mixed reviews. One fan had a lot of fun watching, while the other thought it was complete betrayal to the comics. This makes it somewhat difficult to tell how a typical comic fan would react to this flick, but I personally enjoyed it nonetheless. Man of Steel definitely has its flaws but, on the whole, it gets a three out of four which is pretty good rating in my book. I absolutely recommend you go see it with a friend. The movie is incredibly easy to make fun of at times, so you’re bound to get a few laughs in, for whatever that’s worth.

Aloha readers!

Finally! We are only a couple of days away from one of the most amazing months of the year: Ramadan! Naturally, we’re so excited and thrilled for the coming of this month! Why? Simple. Everything about Ramadan is, in short, just wonderful! Being gathered with our families; catching up on relatives we haven’t seen in months; ghabgat with our friends; and, of course, the excitement and surprises of gergi’an!

We’re so lucky that Ramadan this year is during the summer vacation or else we’d be suffering in this boiling weather! Although it is summer and most people including us love traveling as soon as school is over, almost all people prefer staying in Kuwait during Ramadan. The truth is that Kuwait is one of the very best places to spend this beautiful month in.

Basically we love this month from A to Z! Of course, all that we’ve mentioned makes up just a small part of why we admire this month. Let us also add something we absolutely love doing a few months before Ramadan starts: the dara’as! We love coming up with new designs every year. It’s such an exciting experience to piece together all these tiny details and ideas, and result in special, creative dara’a of our own! We first started designing our dara’as 2 years ago. At first it was a huge challenge, just because there are so many details we’ve never noticed before that truly help make a great piece!

With practice and over time we got to learn some stuff about designing dara’as that we have never paid attention to beforehand. We love designing simple, plain clothing, so it’s definitely a challenge for us to mix and match bright colors for dara’as. But all the girls love to wear them in Ramadan so we just had to give it a try!

Currently we’re working on a few dara’as and, so far, it’s going great! Thanks to our past experience, we now know how to come up with a good piece that can wow our customers and express our personalities!

And to add to this mounting excitement, one of the best periods of the year is going to start, too? We defiantly can’t wait! The TV show, gatherings, and relaxing days all spent with our beloved families and friends makes these great feelings sound even better!

Goodbye readers

And, from both of us: Ramadan Kareem!
