Proposed 2019 Bus RunThank you to the 222 people who responded to the survey. We have considered the responses and noted that 175 families were interested in using the service each day. We also noted the concern around the cost, the route and waiting times. The pricing was set on a cost-recovery basis. It also provides an insight to the subsidies which other Colleges are able to provide and most definitely our State Government in regard to Metro services. We continue to consider possibilities and will have further discussions with the Bus Company. We will be publishing the final proposal shortly. It will likely entail a ‘first come’ basis for securing the places which are made available.

Meanwhile, thank you for input on this issue and also for the ‘School Satisfaction Surveys’ which have also been distributed. A ‘Boarding Satisfaction Survey’ is also on its way. These surveys provide very helpful feedback and data in shaping key decisions across a range of areas. I am aware that sometimes we can be fatigued by the survey process, so your responses are much appreciated!

BilletsIn early December (4-11) we host the Marist Cricket Carnival. The billets will be required to be at the Senior School from 8.15am to 6.30pm each day of the cricket carnival. We ask host families to supply the billets with breakfast, dinner, a bed, use of their washing machine to do a few loads of washing and transport to and from the College. If you are able to assist, please contact Coralie Bandiera on 8350 2797 or [email protected]. Police clearances will be required from all billeting families and due to processing time, it is imperative that we hear from interested families by Monday 12 November.

From the Head of Champagnat CampusOld Scholar and Past Staff Member Evening Recently, Old Scholars and Past Staff Members gathered in the Polding Centre to reminisce and share stories of their time at Marymount. For many, it was a chance to reconnect with old friends and teachers, whom they have not seen for quite some time. The evening saw the launch of our ‘Marymount Story’ video. It took us on a trip down memory lane and captured the essence of Marymount so beautifully. Old Scholars, parents and staff members spoke, with fond memories. They shared of a good place that has remained in close to their hearts. Time was also spent pursuing the memorabilia from the archives and most importantly sharing in a wine or two with friends from years ago. Laughter filed the room as stories of the good old days were shared and let me tell you, there was a cheeky story or two. The evening was a wonderful success and our Old Scholars and Past Staff Members commented that the Good Samaritan spirit of welcome and hospitality is still very much alive. It was a wonderful celebration of Marymount and a fabulous time was had by all. My thanks go to the wonderful Admin team who made it possible and the teaching staff for their presence and support.

Adamson Wins Again! The oval was bursting with energy on Friday as we gathered for our final Marymount Sports Day. The House Captains arrived early to decorate tents, they were excited and determined to win. It was wonderful to see House Spirit come alive with our Year 9 students dressing up particularly well for the occasion. The day kicked off with a Heath Hustle led by our MLG - it was lots of fun. Houses erupted into cheers and chants as students marshalled for their first event. It was House Spirit at its best and a wonderful way to begin Sports Day. The day, whilst a little on the warm side, was just wonderful. Student attendance and participation was high. People tried their best and competed for their House. It was a great display of athleticism and sportsmanship. Adamson were just too strong and took out the Athletics Good Samaritan Shield for a 3rd consecutive time. They just didn’t give up, they had maximum participation in every event. Polding took out the Roma Hayward Shield for Team Spirit. They cheered all day! I congratulate our House Captains on their leadership, they were truly outstanding, as were all our Year 9 ambassadors. I would like to thank our Sports Coordinator Alex Tilley and her assistant Tracey Tappscott, for their leadership in organising this important community event. I also extend my gratitude to the parent volunteers, without you Sports Day would not be possible. Many families came in support; it was great to see you there. Sports Day is always a highlight and this year was no exception.

Year 9 Rite Journey CampIt was with a sense of nervous excitement that the Year 9 girls headed off for their recent three-day hiking camp and solo experience along the Heysen Trail on our beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula! Just a short drive away, the students were transported to a camp in the Deep Creek area of the Heysen Trail and after setting up their tent ‘villages’, each group headed off on their first walk.

Day two entailed a hike encompassing some 13km through beautiful bushland, coastal and rural areas with views of mountains and sea. Many times a “whoa..!” could be heard as the group plodded up a steep, rocky bank, turned a corner and looked up to see an amazing sight – blue sea, cliffs or perhaps a grassy bank full of kangaroos. The dusk saw a frenzy of trangia cooking and washing up, followed by damper-making and roasting of marshmallows. Once dark, it was time for a few laughs (and some fear!) with some ‘Spotlight’ and ‘Sardines’ in the bush, followed by star-gazing and campfire stories.

On the third day, each student spent their ‘solo’ time and whilst some thought this would be their greatest challenge, most found the opportunity for solitude and reflection, a rewarding experience and something which they could have enjoyed for longer.

For the majority of the girls, the setting up of tents, planning and cooking their own meals on trangias and for some even camping itself, were new experiences. These, added to the physical hiking challenge, allowed us to witness some significant Character Strengths in the girls and their teachers were immensely proud of the resilience and grit shown by many of them. To quote some of the girls reflecting on the solo experience or on the camp itself: “I learnt that I actually enjoy alone time more than I thought and should really do this more often”… “I was really worried about the 7-hour hike, but I am so proud that I did it!”… “I showed Courage, Persistence, Spirituality and Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence throughout the camp and these helped me to trust myself and complete all of the tasks.”

Congratulations to each and every one of the students for making it a fantastic experience for all!

From the Assistant to the Principal - Champagnat ProjectYear Level Transition DaysLearners in Year 6, 7 and 8 from both Marymount and Middle School have been coming together for their final transition experiences for the year. We have used our final transition days to also welcome all new students commencing at Champagant Campus in 2019, allowing learners to build new connections, familiarise themselves with the Mitchell Park Campus, reflect on the year that has been and build excitement the year to come. Our Year 9 learners will head to the Senior School on Friday 23 November for their orientation into Year 10.

Building WorksThe Mitchell Park site is currently a very active construction site, as we move towards the final stages of the various building projects occurring across the campus. The main works of the Marymount Building, Good Samaritan Centre and Food Technology Centre are nearing competition with paint, carpet and final fit-outs happening in the next few weeks. Our new canteen, staffroom, toilets and updated change-rooms are also well under way and we look forward to returning to a new and improved campus in 2019! I wish to especially acknowledge both learners and staff who have shown great flexibility and understanding throughout what has been a very busy year of building!

End of Year EventsAs we approach the silly season and our calendars begin to fill with events, I bring your attention to some of the significant dates and occasions for the Middle School:

• Thursday 15 November Band Sandwich 5pm - 7pm at the SHC Middle School

• Thursday 6 December Good News Assembly 9.00am in the Marist Hall, SHC Middle School

• Thursday 6 December End of Year School Mass 11.30am in the Marist Hall, SHC Middle School

• Thursday 6 December Year 9 Rite of Passage Celebration 7.00pm in the McAteer Centre, SHC Senior School

Year 6 Adelaide OvalOur Year 6s had an enjoyable excursion on Thursday 25 October to Adelaide Oval, to watch the Queensland Bulls take on the mighty South Australian Redbacks in a Sheffield Shield match. We caught the train into the city, then our group leader led us to Adelaide Oval. When we got to the game, we all sat as a group and it was a great day to be at the cricket. It was a well organised excursion and a perfect way to begin Term 4.

We watched two great hours of cricket. The Redbacks bowled brilliantly, taking three wickets. Joe Mennie took two wickets and Chadd Sayers one. Connor McInerney also took an awesome catch. At 12:30pm we headed back to school on the train and continued our school day. This excursion was a great way for us to understand some of the tactics involved at the professional level and to see some of the country’s best cricketers in action.

Parents and FriendsP&F Annual General MeetingThe Parents and Friends of Sacred Heart College Senior cordially invite you to our AGM on Wednesday 21 November at 7.00pm in the St Paul’s Food and Hospitality Centre, Fairfield Avenue, Somerton Park. This will be a catered event by the P&F with gourmet pizza (gluten free will be available), wine, beer and soft drinks. The P&F is a great way meet other parents, plus stay connected to the School as your child gets older - and there is no obligation to attend our once a term meeting (yes - we only have four brief meetings a year!) or hold a committee position. For catering purposes, please RSVP via text on 0407 400 806 or [email protected] by Monday 19 November. We look forward to you joining us!!
