THINK POSITIVE! (continued):visits, use less medication, and are much less likely to experience substance abuse. • Do you think you’d be happier if you just had more money? Not so, say researchers! Income actually has a weak effect on levels of happiness. In the workplace, employees seem to gain more satisfaction from their rank, position, and sense of achievement than they do from their pay. Sur-prisingly, spending money on others – as little as $5 a day – creates a boost in happiness levels. • Wondering what you can do to increase your happiness level? Since 40% of happiness is sub-ject to self-control, a person’s deliberate choices and intentional activities can amp up cheerfulness and contentment. High-quality social relation-ships contribute to life satisfaction, and research indicates that married people are generally hap-pier than single ones. Socializing with cheerful people increases the likelihood of being happier.• Think happy thoughts! The average woman has 60,000 thoughts a day – can you believe that 48,000 of them are negative? Avoiding “nega-tive self-talk” can improve attitude and enhance happiness. Rather than saying, “I’m not good at this,” try, “What can I do to get better at this?” Substitute “That’s too difficult,” with “I’m go-ing to give it a try.” Replacing negative thoughts with positive ones allows you to focus on all that is good in life. Keeping a journal listing three things that went well each day produces satisfac-tion and contentment as well. • Having an “attitude of gratitude” is one of the best ways to possess emotional well-being. Counting your blessings causes you to consider

Q: My Thursday nights just aren’t the same without “Community.” When will the show return, and will it be on Fridays, which is what I heard last? -- David S., via e-mail

A: NBC recently announced that “Communi-ty” -- which stars Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Donald Glover and Chevy Chase -- has ping-ponged back to its original Thursday night at 8/7c time slot, beginning Feb. 7. “Com-munity” takes the place of “30 Rock,” which will have concluded its final season by then. We’ll both have to wait patiently for 13 more episodes of one of the best, and most under-rated, comedies on television today.

Q: On your recommendation, I watched Bill Pullman in Scott Turrow’s “Innocent,” which carried on the story of “Presumed Innocent” main charac-ter Rusty Sabich 20 years later, where he is accused of murdering his wife. I absolutely loved it, and it got me to thinking that in my opinion, Bill Pull-man is underutilized in Hollywood. Can you tell me what I can see him in next? -- Virginia F. in Connecticut

A: Beginning Thursday, Jan. 10, at 9:30/8:30c, Bill does a 180 from his “Innocent” role to star as the president of the United States in the NBC comedy “1600 Penn.” The series was co-created by Jason Winder, direc-tor for “Modern Family,” so I can only hope that some of that comic genius carries over to this new series. And Bill is no stranger to being the POTUS (see: “Independence Day”), nor is he averse to being funny. In fact, when I spoke with the star of the dark comedy “Mr. Wrong” earlier this year, he told me he was eager to get back into comedy if he got the right script.

THINK POSITIVE! (continued):all that is valuable in your life. Gratitude dur-ing the bad times actually helps you cope with and adjust to adversity, helping you bounce back to that happiness set point. Taking stock of all you have and recalling contributions others have made for you cause you to be more likely to help others and be less materialistic and envious of others, as well as alleviating bitterness. • You are what you eat! Did you know that a diet low in fiber has been linked to depression? Likewise, a Vitamin B-12 deficiency can pro-duce irritability and depression. Residents of countries who eat the most fish possess the low-est rates of depression. A wide variety of whole foods provides brain-enhancing nutrients, caus-ing your mind to be sharper and more energized. Too much sugar can contribute to shrinkage in the areas of the brain involved in regulating your moods. • Letting go of offenses, anger, and resentment is a sure-fire way to be happier and healthier. Brooding and obsessing over wrongs done to you and refusing to forgive takes its toll on your happiness levels as well as your physical health. • Don’t worry, be happy! Worriers experience muscle tension, agitation, irritability, sleep prob-lems, difficulty with concentration, and an in-ability to relax. They spend much of their time trying to predict the future, and worrying about all that could go wrong. Much of the problem involves trying to solve issues that are not solv-able. As Mark Twain said, “I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened.” •Increase your positive outlook with random acts of kindness. Research has established that these acts induce positive thoughts and can alleviate negative feelings. It seems that individuals get a strong sense that they’re doing something that matters, and subsequently, mood is enhanced.• What about age? Studies have determined that people in their mid- to late-50s are happier, wor-ry less, and have less stress than young adults in their 20s. Part of that finding may be that older people have learned how to control their emo-tions over the years. •Positive mindsets can be elevated by visualizing your “best possible self.” This involves imagin-ing success at your life goals, realization of your life dreams, and achievement of your best poten-tial, followed up with using this to guide your current decisions. • Practice optimism! Happy folks look at the bright side of each negative situation and find the silver lining in every black cloud.• Unhappy people watch 30% more TV. Happier ones are out socializing, exercising, reading, vol

unteering, or attending religious services. And along that line, studies show that spiritual and religious people are happier and healthier than others. • Regular vigorous exercise reduces stress and contributes to great levels of fulfillment. Joggers are 70% less likely to have a high level of stress and dissatisfaction with life. Just 17 to 34 min-utes per day produces a significant difference. Need more good news? Exercise also contrib-utes to lasting cognitive functioning in old age.

FAMOUS LANDMARKS OF THE WORLD:ARC DE TRIOMPHE

At the western end of Paris’ Champs-Elysees on the right bank of the Seine, the regal Arc de Triomphe stands guard over the city. Here are the highlights about this monument, the Arch of Victory, the brainstorm of Napoleon Bonaparte. • Following his most important victory of the Napoleonic Wars, Bonaparte ordered the con-struction of the Arch in 1805. He intended it as a commemoration to all French soldiers who had fought during the wars, and it was his plan that his soldiers would march through the arch upon their return home. However, it took two years just to lay the foundations, and when Napoleon entered the city in 1810, he came from a differ-ent direction. •When the architect of the monument died in 1811, the work was taken over by another for a few years. However, when Napoleon lost power, construction was halted and did not resume until 1833. The Arch was not completed until 1836. Meanwhile, Napoleon died in exile on the island of St. Helena in 1821 and was buried there. In 1840, King Louis Philippe I arranged for Na-poleon’s remains to be returned to France and at long last, Napoleon entered Paris through the Arc de Triomphe. • The Arch sits at the center of 12 main avenues which radiate outward. It reaches 162 feet (49.5 meters) to the sky and is 72 feet (22 meters) deep. Its base features four groups of elaborate sculptures, the most famous of which is “La Marseillaise,” featuring the woman Marianne, the national emblem of France representative of Liberty and Reason. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Help! Our new puppy, “Elwood,” is getting into everything, chewing up my kids’ shoes and tearing the stuffing out of stuffed animals. Any advice on getting him to stop? -- Jessica G., via email

DEAR JESSICA: Getting a puppy to completely stop exploring and chewing is a job that requires time and patience. You also need to reconfigure your house to keep Elwood safe. If he ingests a shard of plastic or some other indigestible item, a poisonous plant or medicines from lower bathroom cabinets, he could be in serious danger.First, pet proof the house. Invest in toddler safety gates (if you don’t already have some) to limit Elwood to parts of the house where he’s less likely to find shoes, toys and other objects. In that gated-off area, remove kids’ toys, clothing, stuffed animals and other chewable objects. Lift potted plants out of his reach (the leaves of many houseplants are

poisonous to pets). Make sure Elwood has access to his pet bed and to appropriate chew toys, and check on him frequently. Puppies should not be left alone for long periods of time, for many reasons. Next, get that basic obedience training regime going. Grab a book or three on dog training, all of which will cover important basic commands like “sit,” “stay,” “come” and “heel.” Spend at least 30 minutes every day working with Elwood, in addition to twice-daily walks and generous amounts of playtime. Chewing behavior is very common in puppies, but tends to diminish as they mature. If he

¥ On Dec. 1, 1830, French novelist Victor Hugo is due to turn in a draft of his book “Notre Dame de Paris” (“The Hunch-back of Notre Dame”). Despite his contract, he instead wrote two plays, “Marion de Lorme” and “Hernani,” and the book is not published until 1831.

¥ On Nov. 26, 1862, Oxford mathematician Charles Lutwid-ge Dodgson sends a handwritten manuscript called “Alice’s Adventures Under Ground” to 10-year-old Alice Liddell. To Your Good Health By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Three or four months ago, the ring finger on my right hand started making popping noises when I bent it. Now it’s still doing that, and it catches in a bent position from time to time. I work as a carpenter, and I can’t afford to take time off. What do you think this is? -- R.B.

ANSWER: My guess is trigger finger. The tendons that bend the fingers travel from the forearm into the palm and then onto each finger and the thumb. On their way to the fingers, a sheath of tough tissue encircles them. Repetitive movements of the fingers irritate the protective tendon sheaths, and they swell. The swelling squeezes the tendon, and the popping noise you hear is the tendon freeing itself from its swollen sheath. That snapping noise sounds like the noise heard when cocking a gun’s trigger. As time goes by, the finger might become locked for some time in the bent position. You don’t want to hear this, but rest is essential to permit the tendon to move smoothly. If you must work, padded gloves afford some protection for the finger. Gripping a tool like a hammer is particularly hard on the tendon and its sheath. Tools with a larger-than-normal handle are less of a problem. The best protection is wearing a metal splint so that the finger can’t move.Your doctor can give you a cortisone injection into the problem area, and that often reduces the swelling quickly. You must rest your finger after the injection for at least three days.If two injections fail to free the finger, then you need to consult an orthopedic surgeon for an opinion on surgical release of the tendon. ***DEAR DR. DONOHUE: This past summer, I got the shock of my life at a family get-together. My cousin, whom I hadn’t seen in 10 years, has bulging eyes. Her mother -- my aunt -- told me it was due to a thyroid problem. I’d never heard of a thyroid problem affecting the eyes. Does it? -- G.D.

ANSWER: It can. An overactive thyroid gland can lead to deposits of material in the eye sockets, which causes the eyes to protrude. There are treatments for this complication of hyperthyroidism. I’m sure this cousin is under the care of a thyroid specialist and an ophthalmologist.

ARC DE TRIOMPHE (continued):are sculpted on the facades of the Arch depicting important battles of the French Revolution and Napoleonic era. On the inside of the Arch, a list of French victories is engraved, as well as the names of the military leaders of those battles. The names that are underlined represent those who were killed in action. Still more sculptures representing characters of Roman mythology decorate the Arch.• Beneath the vault of the Arch lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, interred there on Armistice Day (November 11) of 1920, to commemorate the signing of the armistice between France and Germany in 1918. Prior to the interment, the Arch was the site of troops parading after mili-tary victories, as well as the annual Bastille Day military parade. However, as a sign of respect, parade traffic now marches to the Arch, but then turns to go around its side. A ceremony is held there every November 11. • The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier contains an eternal flame that burns in memory of all the unidentified dead. When President John F. Ken-nedy and wife Jacqueline visited Paris in 1961, they paid their respects at the Tomb. After JFK’s assassination two years later, Mrs. Kennedy re-called the eternal flame and asked that one be placed at her husband’s grave at Arlington Na-tional Cemetery. • Following 1919’s victory parade celebrating the end of World War I, French aviator Charles Godefroy flew his biplane through the Arch, a feat captured on a newsreel.

Air travel isn’t much fun anymore, and getting through the airport is the worst of it. Between the crowds, the TSA rules and dragging heavy luggage, some of us just want to stay home and not bother. There is a way, however, to take care of at least one of the problems with air travel: send your luggage early.UPS, FedEx and DHL all will pick up your luggage at your home and ship it to your destination for you. UPS, for example, has specially designed boxes to hold your suitcases. As with anything else, there are both plusses and minuses to using this service. The benefits:--No standing in line only to be told that your

Air Travel Without the Baggage

bag is overweight and will cost even more.--No lost bags at the airport.--No chance of thieving airport personal going through your suitcases and stealing things or at least rummaging around.--Less chance of damage to your bags.--No wasted time at baggage claim and then pushing through the crowd to pull your luggage off a moving carousel.--No wrestling with luggage through the airport or onto the hotel bus or into your rental car.The downside:--The cost. It can be expensive to use a service to get your luggage to your destination so it’s there when you arrive. But it can be a life (or back) saver if dealing with luggage in crowded airports is a hassle for you.Hint: Have your bag shipped days in advance. That way you’re not paying overnight shipping costs. Also, don’t bother using a “luggage shipper.” They use the same DHL, FedEx or UPS services, but they add on their own handling fees.

My Blue Haven #1 - by V.L. Sloan/ sloanranger

“More hot water, Hon?” Mrs. Guila held the hot water at the ready and at Jane’s nod, refilled her cup. Jane was in Guila’s Good Food Café looking through want ads.Mr. Marston had come in that morning and told all of them what they’d known for weeks, Marston’s Realty was closing it’s doors. He was retiring. The recession hadn’t altered business at the start, lot’s of people were selling their homes and moving away. Remaining retirees that owned homes outright, and others who had substantial sums invested, hunkered down and waited for better times.“So he’s finally doing it, Janey?”“It’s a wonder he kept it open so long, Golly. The younger Marston’s aren’t interested in the business.” Jane had called Mrs. Guila, ‘Golly’ since she’d mispronounced it in her childhood.“I suppose. We have three of your brownies left, Honey. Want one?”Jane smiled: “Can’t afford it.” For several months now, Jane had made desserts for the Café to earn extra money, and according to Golly, they were selling well.“It’s on the house,” Golly said, and came back with a dark-chocolate, wheat germ brownie.“Is anyone else interested in the building? Golly asked, and sat the plate down.“I don’t think so,” Jane said. “Why?”“Why? What better time to make your move, Janey?” The girl looked up at her.“Do you really think so?”

¥ It was American bridge expert Phillip Alder who made the following sage observation: “We are born with talents, but we acquire skills.”

¥ The inventor of Life Savers was Clarence Crane (incidentally, he was also the father of poet Hart Crane). In 1913, a year after coming up with the reci-pe for the candy, Crane sold the patent for his sweet treat for $2,900. Seems like a paltry recompense for creating a pop culture icon that is still going strong

after 100 years.

¥ Do you suffer from arachibutyrophobia? If so, you probably refuse to eat PB&J sandwiches, for fear that the peanut butter will stick to the roof of your mouth.

¥ There are 120 drops of water in a single teaspoon.

¥ In 1976, John Moore, a California man, had his spleen removed at the UCLA Medical Center in or-der to treat his cancer. The operation was successful -- in more ways than anyone anticipated. It seems that the doctors, upon studying the removed organ, found certain cells that had unique cancer-fighting properties. The discovery led to a new -- and profit-able -- treatment. When Moore found out that his spleen had led to this discovery, he sued the Re-gents of the University of California for a share of the

profits. In 1990, 14 years after his cancer was cured, he lost his court case.

¥ Those who study such things say that ants stretch and yawn when they wake up.

THAT’S SEW GREAT! Although the word “Singer” is synonymous with sewing machine, Singer’s machine was far from the first one on the market. Europe-an inventors were devising mechanical sew-ing machines as early as the mid-1700s, with most designed for making shoes. In the United States, Elias Howe, Jr. patented his first sew-ing machine in 1846, one with a lockstitch mechanism, capable of sewing 250 stitches per minute. His invention moved the world toward mass production of clothing, lowering the cost of clothes and making it more read-ily available. Isaac Merritt Singer patented his first machine in 1851, incorporating Howe’s lockstitch mechanism into his machine. Howe sued Singer for patent infringement and won the suit, and Singer was ordered to pay royal-ties to Howe, making Howe a very wealthy man. Isaac Singer lived on his own from the age of 11. He had a love of the theater and joined a troupe of traveling stage perform-ers and earned his living as an actor for more than 20 years. When ticket sales were slow, he worked as a machinist in his brother’s shop. In 1839, he obtained his first patent, one for a machine that drilled rock, which he sold to a canal building company for $2,000. With a financial cushion in place, he returned to the stage. Eleven years later, at age 38, using $40 borrowed from a friend, Singer presented his sewing machine, the first one practical for home use, which became the model for all future machines. It incorporated a needle that moved up and down rather than side to side as previous models did, resulting in a great re-duction in needle breakage. He also replaced the arm crank with a foot pedal, and later add-ed a carrying case. His innovations resulted in a machine that could produce 900 stitches per minute.Singer unveiled his improved model at the 1855 World’s Fair in Paris, earning first prize. Before long, there were several Singer factories in New York. Perhaps Singer’s most important contribution was his marketing technique. With the goal of putting a machine in every American home, Singer demonstrat-ed his machine at numerous country fairs and other gatherings, using his flair for the dra-matic to entice buyers
