    DOING MY BIT

    Aryan Garg Class XII

In the summers of 2015, we moved to our new house in Orchid Island. The sun was pouring heat. Though the name was Orchid Island, it was only surrounded with concrete or roads and looked more barren than a desert. There were little to no trees in the entire society. All houses had a small front and back yard. Initially, our yard was full of construction debris. My father is an eclectic person. He loves gardening, so he wanted to turn the yard green. For that, we bought gardening tools and after a week of removing the debris and refilling with farm soil, the yard became usable. We went to a seed store at a nearby village and bought small packets of seeds of some vegetables. We sowed the seeds but there were extra seeds left which got wasted. I wondered that this must be happening at all other plant lovers' homes too. It meant that a lot of seeds were getting wasted. Imagine if they all would have grown into plants…

Fig 1 : A view from a balcony (2014) Fig 2 : Barren, small front yards (2014) One month later, an environmentalist who lived in our society, Mrs. Lima Rosiland, organized a Van Mahotsav event, in which she planted around hundred young trees all over the society. I was inspired by this, so I started preparing saplings of common herbs like tulsi, basil, marigold for distributing them to the people of the society. Through a stall in the central park, with a board titled Nature Forest Seeds, I distributed

  • the saplings to the people of Orchid Island for free. A lot of people showed interest. Some people even gave me some more seeds, containers and other items usable for gardening. Then onwards, I started trying vegetative propagation methods and prepared a number of saplings of roses, ficus trees and other trees for distribution. The word spread and people also started coming from the nearby societies to collect saplings from us. Through this stall, I distributed over two hundred saplings.

Fig 3 : Glimpses of sapling distribution stall

In Orchid Island, there were a bunch of people, Mrs. Lima Rosiland, Mr. Ankit Wadhwa, Mrs. Papiya Desai and a few others, who always encouraged me in my efforts. I started a WhatsApp group by the name ‘Nature Forest Seeds’ consisting of them and all the people who had taken saplings from my stall. This group provides a platform for nature lovers to exchange seeds, saplings and knowledge about gardening. Soon, many people began posting pictures of the flowers, kitchen garden yields on the group. The logo of the group ‘Nature Forest Seeds’ was designed on a pro bono basis by Ms. Divya Mehtani, a creative at a promotion firm.

Fig 4: A pink hibiscus Fig 5:Information about some plants Now Orchid Island has trees along all roads. The greenery is a feast to the eyes. The plants keep people busy in a constructive way. This way, they spend more time in their gardens and less time on their mobile phones. By adopting a plant, children learn how to take care of other beings. Earlier, the security

  • guards had to do their duty under the scorching sun. Now they have a refuge under the cool shade of the Mulberry and Gulmohar trees. Using the technology, I wish to create a global template, which can be used locally by different societies across the world. This can also be integrated with the latest research and development in plantation and forestry. There are lot of opportunities in the modern cities, so called concrete jungles, to grow plants and wake up to the chirping of birds every morning. With the amount and pace of deforestation, this can be a mode of reinstating some of the greenery we robbed our Earth of.
