Welcome To Issue 160Summer is officially here at the end of this month - hooray! And Summer in Sevenoaks means only one thing - the Sevenoaks Summer Festival. There are so many events happening throughout Sevenoaks in celebration of this festival and they can be found on pages 4 and 5 of The Sevenoaks Advertiser. There seems to be another great mix of events for all ages this year, so do pop along to join in with the festivities.

This month, our garden wildlife section takes a look at aphids. Have your plants ever become prey to these insects? I was the proud owner of a beautiful poinsettia several years ago and was pleased as punch as the seasons passed and it kept growing and blooming. That was until it became the host to many aphids one summer! I did make several attempts to rescue it with a diluted fairy liquid solution which definitely got the worst of them off; but my beautiful poinsettia didn’t live to tell the tale. Keep an eye on those plants of yours as aphids hatch from their eggs in the Spring, so make sure you know the signs of an aphid attack!

We have one last excerpt from A Boy From Peckham on page 6 before our final article in Issue 161 next month. John Burton tells us a bit about the top secret affairs that went on in the Shetlands, but he obviously couldn’t tell us everything. We also hear about a new cinema that opened up and the special treatment that those in the Armed Forces received.

Why not take this issue out in to the sunshine and enjoy our sudoku puzzles that are on page 7? My sudoku supplier informs me that they are both graded as being ‘easy’ puzzles so if you haven’t yet caught on to the sudoku craze, why not give these a try?

If you are reading this then you know how interesting this free magazine is. Do you know a local company who could benefit from advertising with us? Or perhaps you are the owner of a local company and would like to get some more local work? We are currently running a special offer for our next issue, details of which can be found at the top of page 7. This really is a fantastic

opportunity to get your company name in to over 14,500 Sevenoaks homes every month. Want to know more? Give us a call or drop us an email.

Until next month!

There are over 500 aphid species in the UK and as many gardeners will know, they are common garden pests. Aphids are very small, soft bodied insects that are only a few millimeters in length. They have two little tubes at the end of their abdomen which are called cornicles. They also have a proboscis which looks like a long beak and functions in a similar way to a straw. This is what is used by the aphids to suck the liquid from plants. They are often green but can also be black, red, white, orange or brown in colour. The nymphs look very similar to the adults and both move quite slowly and do not hop about. Aphids have complicated life cycles which begins in Spring, when the aphid eggs hatch in to wingless females. These females are able to produce daughters without mating and can do so quite quickly; with a rate of 12 per day in warmer climates. As they mature and become able to bear offspring themselves in about a week, their daughters, in turn, are able to produce their own daughters without mating; so you can see how quickly a colony of aphids can grow. As the season progresses, some of these females do produce sons and daughters who develop wings. These offspring will then fly to a different plant to mate and produce eggs that survive the winter, thus keeping their genes alive. The hatchlings may then reproduce and move back to the original host plant species. Aphids typically live for a few weeks to a few months, but with their busy lifecycle, this time is definitely well spent. Aphids prefer the bottoms of leaves rather than the top, and due to

their size, they are often quite hard to spot at a quick glance. Initial signs of damage to the plants can be a sticky substance which is known as honeydew and is what is excreted by the aphids. This honeydew may turn black if it gets affected by sooty mould fungus. The black spots that the fungus creates on the leaves prevents the plants from absorbing the light needed in photosynthesis, and without being able to photosynthesise, the plant will not survive. Another sure sign of an aphid attack is when the leaves curl and turn yellow. Honeydew is produced as a waste product by the aphids and occurs because the aphids eat sap from the plants. Sap is mostly sugar and so the aphid must consume a large quantity of this to obtain sufficient level of nutrition to survive. The excess sugar that has been consumed is excreted by the aphids and becomes very attractive to other insects, especially ants. It is therefore common to have a large number of ants on the plants that have become hosts to aphids. Some ants actually adopt the aphids and can be seen carrying them from plant to plant in order to ‘milk’ them for their honeydew. Some ants even take the aphids to their nests during the winter months to keep them safe until the following Spring! Because aphids are so sweet, they do become prey to several predators such as lady beetles, pirate bugs, hoverfly larvae, damsel bugs and certain stinging wasps. Although very small, aphids are equipped to protect themselves. When threatened, they can produce a waxy fluid from their cornicles which acts to gum up the mouth

of the predator. They are also able to sound an alarm to fellow aphids by secreting alarm pheromones. This tells the surrounding aphids to run for cover. Unfortunately for aphids, some lady beetles have learnt how to intercept such chemical signals so they are able to follow these pheromones for an easy to catch meal. Another way of defending themselves is to kick predators with their hind legs. They are also known to stab the eggs of their predators in order to kill them in vitro. Aphids are obviously quite a threat to house plants and crops alike but there are several different solutions available on the market to help to control these pests.

A Boy From Peckham - Back To The She t l and s

By the time that I returned to the Shetlands, the new cinema under construction had been completed. Its use at that time was limited to the Armed Forces. I would have imagined that some of the local people would have felt a little put out that they had never had the use of this new cinema, unless they were accompanied by a member of the Armed Forces. The majority of people did agree that the Armed Forces should have certain privileges; after all, the military personnel were away from their families and the sad reality was that some of them would never see their family again, such is the price of war.

The first film to be screened was

Bing Crosby in ‘Going My Way.’ A friend and myself decided to go and see this film and as we were about to go in to the cinema, two elderly women approached us and asked whether we would be kind enough to them in to see the movie. Both of these women were avid fans of Bing Crosby so we were only too pleased to oblige them. After the film had finished, the two women insisted that we all should go back for a nice supper to one of their homes. It didn’t take too much of an effort for us to say yes to this offer, for as I have mentioned previously, good food was scarce and we were not disappointed for their put on a good spread for us. The main topic of conversation was about the cinema with its posh and comfortable seating, and such good sound quality compared to the old cinema that only had rough benches and was very draughty. At the end of

the evening, we all said what a pleasant night it had been; then my friend and myself bid our goodbye and set off back to our base.

I have mentioned before that my service time spent in Scalloway was under the status of ‘Top Secret’, for Scalloway was the place where our Secret Agents were based. It was from here that the agents were shuttled to and from Norway by a small fishing vessel that had been given the nickname of the ‘Shetland Bus.’ Many years later this was dramatized in to a BBC play. The Shetland Bus was Captained by a Mr Lassien. Their missions were that secret that no one directly connected would know the whereabouts of the Shetland Bus at any one time. My part in all this, although not very glamorous

but as equally important, was the patrolling of the coastline. The U-boats that patrolled that part of the North Sea were kept at bay by our destroyers that also patrolled the same area. The real threat was that the Germans could drop paratroops inside the sea area that was too shallow for our destroyers to venture in to. Therefore, so that the Germans couldn’t gather precise information of our patrols, a patrol would not be sent out at a time that was not predetermined by anyone. It must have worked, as no attack was ever mounted.
