Remembering Tom McEntee He ran his own tip sheet called Country Music Survey, was Country chart editor at Cashbox, worked promotion at a number of labels, and even served in Special Forces during the Vietnam War. But for everyone reading this, for everyone in the Country radio and music industries – whether you knew him, knew of him or are just now hearing the name – Tom McEntee played an important part in your career. The man who conceptualized and orchestrated the first Country Radio Seminar in 1969 passed away Thursday (9/24) in Florida, surrounded by family. “It was over after the first seminar,” McEntee told Country Aircheck for our CRS-40 print issue, published in March. But the word of mouth among attendees was strong, as it’s been every year since. And 40 years later, CRS stands as the most successful and important educational event ever established in the music and radio industries.

Country Radio: Strength In Numbers Maybe you already knew Country has more listeners than any other format (56.2 million per week). And that there are nearly twice as many FM Country stations as the next closest format (1,337). But did you know, contrary to perception that Country’s audience is mostly 35-54 women (who comprise

My Tunes: Music ThaT shaped My Life

Big Machine VP/Promotion Jack Purcell discusses his most important songs, artists or concerts:1. Jackson Browne, Running On Empty: An amazing album that stands the test of time. Lyrically and melodically, it blows me away. As a kid, I would stare at the album cover - drummer Russ Kunkel’s kit - while listening to him and bassist Leland Sklar hold down

the rhythm section. Still a big wow for me.2. Supertramp, Breakfast In America: This album brings back memories of my first girlfriend and the turntable needle running out of grooves. Pop music with so much energy and great arrangements.3. Pink Floyd, The Wall: I was home alone in my parents’ basement listening to my first “real” stereo when I heard it. I got so scared I ran out of the house, and stood in the middle of the street until my mom came home.4. Led Zeppelin: Bonzo. Radio provided me with Zeppelin A-Z and I taped them all courtesy of KQDS, sister to KQRS/Minneapolis.5. Bob Marley, Fleetwood Mac, Zappa, Lawrence Welk Show (Yup!), Hee Haw, Austin City Limits, Chick Corea, Journey: All big influences on me as a kid.• A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Kanye West.• An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Kanye West.• An album you played or listened to incessantly: Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours.• One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Bonnie Raitt’s “Going Wild For You Baby.”

Jack Purcell

“Tom was very passionate about radio and musical talent,” says Charlie Monk, who was there at the inception. “He was very selective about who he worked with. They had to have integrity along with their talent. Obviously, we spent a lot of time together in the early days of CRS. He said some complimentary things about me keeping the seminar together but his spirit was there right through the 40th. I will miss his council and his infectious, positive attitude.” McEntee recognized early on that the seminar’s strength ran deeper than the educational opportunity. “What was offered up on the podium or in the panels was only a portion of the event’s significance,” he said. “Of equal or greater consequence was the fact that the attendees were provided an opportunity to speak with and be with their peers and to broaden their awareness and understanding of the business. They had an opportunity to communicate one-on-one, face-to-face. They were given an occasion to express themselves – and to be heard. “And though it was impossible for me to imagine what might happen ... one thing was apparent: It could change the world of Country radio.” It could, and it did. We are all standing on Tom McEntee’s shoulders. Thank you, Tom.

Strength In Numbers (continued from page 1)Another stereotype shattered by the 2009 study is that Country is only big in the South. While it is No. 1 in the three Southern regions and has a 3:1 lead over all other formats in the Southeast, Country also is a dominant No. 1 in the West North Central area, No. 2 in the East North Central and Mountain territories, third in New England and the Middle Atlantic, and No. 4 in the Pacific zone. More than 51% of adult Country listeners have attended or graduated college, the format’s highest percentage in at least seven years. Earnings among Country consumers have also grown recently, with 49% living in households generating $50,000+ annually, up from under 40% in Spring 2002. The percentage of Country listeners with $75,000 or more in HHI has risen 55% over that period. Country earns much longer TSL than most programming, regardless of age group. It ranks No. 3 among listeners 12+ and

Big & Rich Big & Rich: Greatest Hits (Warner Bros.) The duo’s DVD/CD set features 18 tracks and nine music videos chronicling their hits over three albums. Tracks include “Save A Horse (Ride A Cowboy),” “Lost In This Moment” and previously unreleased “The Man I Am Right Now.” Big & Rich produced with Paul Worley.

Jeremy Crady Smoke Wagon Serenade (Flying M) Crady’s debut album features 13 tracks backed by Garth Brooks’ studio band, including drummer Milton Sledge, who produced the project. Crady co-wrote all the songs including his current single “The Toughest Ride,” with George Strait’s “I Can’t See Texas From Here” being the lone exception.

Miranda Lambert Revolution (Columbia) Lambert’s current single “White Liar,” first single “Dead Flowers,” John Prine’s “That’s The Way That The World Goes ‘Round” and Buddy Miller’s “Somewhere Trouble Don’t Go” are among the 15 tracks. Lambert wrote or co-wrote all except four, enlisting co-writers Ashley Monroe, Lady Antebellum’s Dave Haywood and Charles Kelley, and boyfriend

Blake Shelton. Frank Liddell and Mike Wrucke produced.

Patty Loveless Mountain Soul II (Saguaro Road) Loveless’ 15-song continuation of 2001’s Mountain Soul opens with Harlan Howard’s “Busted” and closes with Emmylou Harris’ “Diamond In My Crown.” Loveless co-wrote “(We Are All) Children Of Abraham” and “Big Chance” with husband and producer Emory Gordy Jr.

is No. 1 among English-language music stations. Despite its 25+ adult target, Country is a solid No. 1 in TSL among teens and No. 2 with 18-34s. It’s tied for No. 2 in TSL with adults 25-54 (it’s the No. 1 English-language format) and is third in TSL among 35-64 listeners. While CMA’s recent research shows that only half of core Country fans have home Internet access, Scarborough data in this report shows Country listeners are only 9% less likely than the average person to tune in radio online. And it’s not as if those

fans who are online suffer with dial-up. About 56% of Country households have broadband, compared to an average 62% across the leading 17 formats – pretty good considering how many Country consumers live in outlying areas. In fact, there are 557 streaming Country stations, second only to Contemporary Christian’s 578. And if you’re thinking of increasing your billing or doing some trade, pay a call to your nearest Outback, Longhorn or Ruth’s Chris. Country consumers are more likely than consumers of any other format to have dined at a steakhouse in the past 30 days.
