Dear Parents and Carers, Education Week Last week was Education Week. It was very disappointing not to be able to celebrate together and showcase the wonderful activities and skills our students show and enjoy every day at Nulkaba. Our Cross Country K-6 event was scheduled for Education Week to ensure there was something fun for our students to participate in. It was a bit of a process to organise as we had a lot of difficulty in finding a suitable venue. Ultimately we ended up holding it here at school and it was a huge success. The students had a great day. It was so great to see our students and staff having a wonderful time. Hopefully we can plan some other fun activities during this complicated time. Usually CCGPS holds a Community of Schools awards ceremony during Education Week at one of the local High Schools. Due to COVID restrictions this could not happen but we wanted to make sure our community were still recognised for their efforts. We held a mini assembly in our hall, with most classes ZOOMing in from their classrooms. Congratulations to our award winners, Mr and Mrs McDonald - Outstanding Contribution by a Community Member, McKenzie Cronin - Excellence in Student Achievement, Tina Appleby - Outstanding contribution by a Non-Teaching Staff Member, Teena Craft - Excellence in Teaching and School Achievement Award (Life Skills Program) - accepted by Mrs Marsh. Congratulations to all of the award winners. A video was posted on our Facebook Page and a combined video will be posted on the CCGPS website. Award winners from all schools were recognised in the Advertiser last week. COVID-19 Update Unfortunately due to the new cases in both Victoria and NSW, no easing of restrictions have happened for this term. This is most disappointing for everyone but we need to follow all the regulations. We are hoping we will be able to run day excursions and possibly incursions later in the year. We are working very hard with members of the DoE to work out a plan which will enable the commencement of Nearly at Nulkaba. Thank you to all the parents who have supported our new school start and finish procedures. It seems to be working well. It is very important to remember that parking restrictions will be enforced and we never know when the ranger may appear at our school. It is also very dangerous to park illegally. Rest assured no student will be left at the gate by themself, so even if you need to do a lap of the block that is perfectly fine. Just a reminder that our very clear directive from the DoE is that any staff member, student, support person who is unwell is to be sent home. I know this can be hard if it is only a runny nose or a bit of a cough but as these are part of the list of COVID symptoms we do not have a choice. If your child has asthma I know this can be very difficult. Please see your doctor for a clearance so they can return to school. New Office Hours As the Office is currently the only way you can come onto the school grounds, the office hours will be extended from next Monday, 17 August 2020. The office will be officially open from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm. Mrs Ryan is often here even earlier than that so if you need to discuss something before 8:00 am just give the office a ring and let them know. This is due to a few different reasons including: giving parents additional after school access to make payments or obtain information adding safety to our students and families by having the phone lines open and manned until school buses have arrived home to make our office more accessible. We hope these changes will make things easier for our community. It was very disappointing not to be able to celebrate together and showcase the wonderful activities and skills our students show and enjoy every day at Nulkaba. Our Cross Country K-6 event was scheduled for Education Week to ensure there was something fun for our students to participate in.

This is due to a few different reasons including:

giving parents additional after school access to make payments or obtain information

adding safety to our students and families by having the phone lines open and manned until school buses have arrived home

to make our office more accessible.

We hope these changes will make things easier for our community.

P&C Meeting With limited numbers we are still holding our P&C meetings to make sure we are still working on some of the projects which need completing around our school. Our Canteen is up and running, so please let Bec know if you are comfortable working in the Canteen with the restrictions that are needed to effectively provide this service to our families. If you have anything you wish to have discussed at the P&C Meeting, please contact one of the executive of the P&C and it can be raised at the next meeting.

UP&UP Mural The wonderful Shane and Faith from UP&UP have been working this week with some of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children on a new mural at the front of our school. They also worked with our senior ATSI children on some techniques, where they created their own art work on a record. We look forward to having them join us again soon to work on another mural with more of our children.

Once again thank you for your continued support. Stay safe.

Early Stage 1 Once Upon a time at Nulkaba, is the title for our current Project Based Learning. We have learnt lots about different

versions of fairy tales and had fun creating some beautiful art too.

We have also been paining some beautiful self-portraits too.

As you can see by their smiles, Kindergarten were super excited to be involved in our whole school cross country event

last week. All children did their personal best and should be very proud of themselves.

We are enjoying learning about procedures in our classes.

Three of our Kindergarten classes have been lucky enough this term to have University

Practicum students in their classes and all of them have expressed that they are enjoying

their time with our wonderful students.

One of our very dedicated home readers, Grace B, has filled a whole yellow R.A.T.s reader

book already. This is over 200 books! WOW… Congratulations Grace. This is incredible!

Class 1PW It has been a busy start to Term 3 for 1PW. We have been developing our creative skills with some visual art activities -

making our Three Little Pigs display, pig art drawings and our fairy tale castles. Our performing arts skills are also improving

through practising our class production item.

We have also been working on our literacy skills. In writing, we have been ‘dressing up sentences’ by packing the noun

groups and adding adverbs to show how an action is happening. In spelling, we are focusing on a weekly blend to help us

to be smooth readers and read like rivers, not robots! We have also introduced “Gratitude Tuesday” where in circle time,

we think of someone or something we are grateful for. Then we write and illustrate it in our books.

In Math we used the Bee Bots to support our knowledge of position and used positional language to direct our friends to

a hidden object. We have also been looking at time - using analogue and digital clocks to read o’clock and half-past times.

It has been fun to experiment with the hourglass timers and make predictions about how long events take.

In Technology with Mrs Anderson we have been learning to email and send photos which became part of Mrs Anderson’s

Instagram wall. We even took selfies the other day to make an “All About Me” google slide.

Last week we enjoyed our first cross country carnival. Even though it had to be moved to school, we still had a lot of fun.

We are also practising our skipping skills for the Skip Off in Week 8 - keep collecting those sponsors!

Class 3/4N What an amazing start to term! Finally some normality back into the year and it’s all happening in 3/4N. We have enjoyed being back in the classroom and learning together about a range of topics.

We have been learning in Project Based Learning all about our 'Marine Mission'. Focusing on the wonderful world under the sea, the weird and wacky animals that lurk below, the environmental issues currently faced global and finding solutions to these issues.

In mathematics we have recently been enjoying learning the angles all around us and reading maps to understand position better. In literacy we have been doing informative writing which has focused on a chosen endangered animal that we may find in the ocean.

We have had some fun school events such as the school cross country and some very exciting upcoming events such as the school production and our Jeans for Genes day fundraiser.

All in all it has been such a hard start to the year, but all students should be commended for their continued enthusiasm and dedication to themselves as learners.

Class 6M One of the subjects 6M have been looking at during Maths this term is 3D objects. The students were challenged to design and create a new toy made completely from 3D objects. After these toys were made in the 3D printers, the students then had to make a persuasive poster advertising the toy. Here are some of the finished products:

As part of our stage project focusing on war, we read the text ‘The Chocolate Box’ and learnt how Lin brought items that all held a special memory in a chocolate box. The students then had to bring in a box containing six items that they would take with them if they had to leave where they lived and move away. - Mr Melmeth

TWO WEEKS TO GO! We are down to the last two weeks of the 2020 Challenge. Even though we have

had a very unusual year, over 250 students have now completed the 2020

Challenge – a great result with all things considered.

In the last two weeks, several more primary students finalised their online entry,

earning their 2020 certificate. Lucas G in 4W deserves a special mention as he

only decided late last week to complete this year’s challenge – and in just four

days, that is exactly what has happened – four days and the Challenge is met!

Well done Lucas!

Of course, we have other students to congratulate – Marshall B 3S, Dex D 3S,

Sadie K 3S, Seth M 3S, Lachlan M 3S, Caydance N 3S, Jack N 3S, Zaine W 3S and

Molly Y 3S – goodness, 3S have been busy! In 3/4N, well done to Scarlet B-W, and

William P. In 4/5Z, well done to Elsie B, Sienna P, Bryce S, and Blair C. Lastly, in

5/6P, well done to Kate C, Jacob C, Amelia C, Mackenzie C, Max O’B and Alizah S.

Excellent work to all these busy readers!
