Tutte and the incomparable La Boheme.

Our Members Only Sports Club got away to a cracking start with the Grand Prix Live Screenings playing to packed houses throughout June. Entry is free but you need a loyalty card and to pre-book your seat. We have lots of summer sporting events coming up – including the Men’s Wimbledon Final. The atmosphere’s great and you can bring the kids.

Talking of kids, a reminder that we do Family Tickets which are available online and via the box office – these are great value. We also do Family Shows where all tickets are £5.

You’ve told us that a good choice of films is more important than getting new releases in the first week (when we have to give most of the income to the film distributors anyway), so from now on, we will be showing most films a week or so after national release day, but

selling tickets as soon as the film launches.

New films this month include Behind the Candelabra (Michael Douglas as Liberace snogging Matt Damon, sounds surreal but apparently it’s “really good”), The Big Wedding starring Robert DeNiro, Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon and Robin Williams;

it’s nice to see a film that’s only 89 minutes long after so many marathons lately. Summer in February and Olympus has Fallen are also well worth watching as are our bring-backs such as Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Skyfall and Casino Royale with Daniel Craig.

We hope you enjoy the July Programme and as ever, thanks for encouraging and supporting your local independent cinema.

GrEaT NEWS...

The Regal is now part of National Theatre Live, the National Theatre’s ground-breaking initiative to broadcast British theatre live from the London stage to cinemas across the UK and around the world. The scheme has been a huge success – participating cinemas can show both the actual live performance and then repeat them as “encores”.

National Theatre Live launched in June 2009 and has since broadcast more than 20 plays. Cameras are carefully positioned throughout the auditorium to ensure that cinema audiences get the ‘best seat in the house’ view of each production. Our first NT Live encore performance is The Audience starring Helen Mirren playing HM The Queen at London’s Gielgud Theatre.

We will also be showing the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Richard II with David Tennant. The production will be filmed during the performance on 13 November 2013 and simultaneously screened into over 100 cinemas around the country including The Regal.

The New York Metropolitan Opera Live in HD 2013 – 2014 Season launches soon with a revised pricing structure which we hope will make these superb performances accessible to a wider audience. Performances include Eugene Onegin, Tosca, Falstaff, Cosi Fan

The Newlyn School of artists flourished at the beginning of the 20th Century and the film focuses on the wild and bohemian Lamorna Group, which included Alfred Munnings and Laura and Harold Knight. The incendiary anti-Modernist Munnings, now regarded as one of Britain's most sought-after artists, is at the centre of the complex love triangle, involving aspiring artist Florence Carter-Wood and Gilbert Evans, the land agent in charge of the Lamorna Valley estate. True and deeply moving the story is played out against the timeless beauty of the Cornish coast, in the approaching shadow of The Great War.

James Bond gets a hefty whack in the testes in Casino Royale, both literally and figuratively. The 21st instalment of the world's longest-running movie series strips away the gadgetry to focus on action and character, introducing a younger, tougher James Bond (Daniel Craig) struggling to complete his first major mission. The target is terrorist banker Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen), whom our hero must defeat in a high stakes poker game at the swanky Casino Royale in Montenegro.

An unlikely friendship forms as the boys struggle to help him escape from bounty hunters and his dark past; at the same time attempting to reunite him with his long-lost love, Juniper (Witherspoon). Reminiscent of the Mark Twain novel 'Huckleberry Finn', 'Mud' captures a dramatic and exhilarating snapshot of the American heartland.

Joss Whedon presents the first great contemporary Shakespeare since Baz Lurmann’s Romeo and Juliet. A modern retelling of Shakespeare's classic story. Shot in 12 days using the original text, it follows two pairs of lovers in the run up to one of their marriages, offering a dark, sexy and occasionally absurd view of the intricate game that is love. A wonderful adaption of a brilliant comedy.

“Joss Whedon shoots the Bard's play like an episode of Desperate Housewives in the first great contemporary Shakespeare since Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet” Guardian

THE BLING rING

From award-winning director Sofia Coppola, 'The Bling Ring' is based on the true story of a gang of fashion-crazy teenagers who rob celebrity homes they've located online. Starring Emma Watson (Harry Potter) and Paris Hilton, an actual victim of the well-heeled young robbers, 'The Bling Ring' examines the very modern obsession with fame and wealth, and how for some people, even the law won't get in the way of them having it.

DO YOU HAVE ANY QUEsTIONs?

Can I come to Parents and Babies if I’m not a parent and don’t have a baby?

Yes, we do allow entry to non-parents with no babies but recommend you choose another performance if at all possible. Parents can relax more if they know everyone else is in the same boat. So come by all means, but don’t tut if it gets a bit loud.

I was really cross when the person next to me was texting away all through The Great Gatsby – can you not stop this from happening?

Only if we know about it – we encourage all our guests to let us know immediately if something is bothering them. We will then do our utmost to sort out the problem, on this occasion by having a quiet word with the culprit. We used to ask people to turn off mobiles during the welcome speech but we decided that as virtually all Regal guests are civilised and perfectly mannered, it should not be necessary. If you’re reading this, texting person: see the pain you cause!

I am hoping that the price of opera tickets will come down this season – when will you release prices?

While most people agree that the New York Met Opera live streaming is great value for money, not everyone wants to spend that much so we have revised our prices in a

way which we hope will be welcomed by new comers and regulars alike. Just a thought – if you know an opera lover then there is no nicer gift than a ticket to one of these shows, it’s always a treat.

Here’s what some nice people told us:

“I am not given to writing notes, but I was at your brilliant showing of Monaco [Grand Prix]. Would like to congratulate you on the quality of staff you employ. Although they were all great on Sunday there was one that I would like to make special comment about. Her name is Isabelle, and she was the most caring and helpful person I have met in quite a long time. I am disabled and tend to notice these things. Bringing this to your attention in the hope that you will mention this to her and offer my grateful thanks. I think what you’re doing at the Regal is superb”.

“why doesn’t every town have a cinema like this? Beautiful big screen, and the comfort. Just idyllic. From the moment I went in and collected my pre booked tickets, I knew this would be special. It was an absolute delight and I know I will be going to the cinema much more than I have done in ages!! I couldn’t believe that I was sitting in a cinema - huge comfortable chairs that I could snuggle down into with my legs stretched out in front of me, whilst sipping a glass of wine and watch the film. Perfect”.

“We visited the refurbished cinema for the first time … (we remember it from the old days). Wow! What a change! We loved it - to sit in comfortable armchairs, enjoying a beer and cheese & biscuits whilst watching an excellent film, what could be nicer. This will definitely be first on our list of cinemas to go to when we want to see a film.”

Where can I find information about the new monthly subscription service?

We were hoping to publish details in this programme but we missed the deadline – all will be revealed next month but meanwhile if you are interested, details are available from the office on 01386 442 585 or [email protected]. Basically, this is a new membership scheme (£24 per month) which provides big benefits and savings to regulars – the existing loyalty card scheme is unaffected.
