Each year the Department for Education publish numerous ways for staff, student & parent alike to compare and analyse all schools and colleges across the United Kingdom, the most famous of these are known as the “League Tables”.

Launching a new service for this academic year, the final validated league tables were published in March 2017. The “Compare School & College Performance Service” as it is now known ranks education establishments, primarily on their “progress score”, a measure of every qualification all students receive in comparison to their expectation.

In a 5 mile radius, the Stanford & Corringham Sixth Form Centre comes out top of this new headline measure; scoring 0.02 (national average expectation 0.00).

This means that on average, students in the Stanford & Corringham Sixth Form Centre slightly exceed expectation overall and are more likely to attain better than expected grades compared to other local centres.

Year on year results at the Stanford & Corringham Sixth Form Centre have continued to improve, 2017 is set to continue this trend with more students choosing us to guide them through further education.

CHARITY CAR WASH & BAKE SALE

As part of the Health and Social Care Extended Diploma course at Stanford & Corringham Sixth Form Centre, Unit 44 required the Level 3 students to evaluate their development of team working skills. The students organised a team event and decided collectively what their aims and objectives were and what their roles were going to be. The choice of event was entirely up to them and they had to complete the organising, planning and delivery of the team event independently. To raise money, the students organised two separate events, a sponsored car wash and a

bake sale before Christmas. With the help of staff, sixth formers and donations from family, the team raised £330.00 from the car wash for Little Havens and £152.00 from the bake sale for St Luke’s Hospice, which is a fantastic achievement and we are very proud of their efforts. As part of our on-going charitable partnership with Little Havens, the monies raised went to the hospice to support the children and their families. Students also decided to support this charity as it is close to their hearts and the hospice serves the local community of Thurrock and Essex as a whole.

FRESHER’S FAYRE Year 13 Health and Social Care students went to support Wize Up at South Essex College’s Fresher’s Fayre in September to alert young people to the dangers of Legal Highs or New Psychoactive Substances. Wize Up commented that they were an amazing group of young people who were very engaging with the attendees students and tutors. Their help was invaluable as it was very busy and the merchandise they produced were a hit.

On Friday 13th January 2017, Peter Hall (Area Leader for Voluntary Income) from Little Havens Children’s Hospice visited the Sixth Form to receive the cheque from the charity Bake Sale & Car Wash events. He explained to the students the value fundraising has to an organisation like Havens Hospices.

MUSIC TRIP TO THE SOUTHBANK CENTRE On Tuesday 28th February the BTEC year 12 & 13 Music & Music Tech students attended a World Music Workshop at the Southbank Centre. Concentrating on Gamelan music of Java and Bali students were given the opportunity to play a range of traditional instruments that wouldn’t usually be available in school, such as gongs, traditional flutes, metallophones and drums. Students learnt a piece of music to perform as a group and also had a go at improvising their own music on the instruments too. Students were also given a demonstration of traditional Indonesian dancing and a brief introduction to the history and cultural importance of the music. All involved enjoyed the day and learned a lot about music from different cultures.

On Friday 16th June a group of 12 A-Level and GCSE Fine Art, Textiles and Photography students were invited to Goldsmiths University in London. Goldsmiths is a particularly prestigious university which specialises in the study of creative, cultural and social subjects. The aim of the trip was to visit the undergraduate show which as always is an exciting showcase of emerging talent and a celebration of creative minds.

A FANTASTIC OPPORTUNITY Stanford & Corringham Sixth Form’s very own Ruth Olajugbagbe has secured a place to perform at Village Green festival in Chalkwell Park, which takes place on 8th July 2017. Last year approximately 30,000 people attended the festival. This prestigious event received thousands of applications from local artists and Ruth’s talent has shone through gaining her a place on the Oak Stage, alongside artists such as Kate Nash and Nothing But Thieves. Everyone at the Stanford & Corringham Sixth Form Centre wishes Ruth the best of luck for her performance.

A FESTIVAL OF ARTS & MUSIC

CHALKWELL PARK, SOUTHEND ON SEA

08.07.17 11AM – 9PM

Students from the Sixth Form were able to view a range of creative and innovative disciplines including sculpture, performance art, textiles, painting and digital media. As well as providing inspiration for their own work; the trip was also designed to give our students an insight into university life and develop aspirations for their own future. The students were all very positive about the experience, with the highlight of the trip being the opportunity to meet with a student who had just completed her degree at Goldsmiths. She spent time chatting with our students answering questions and explaining her work. All the students involved were a real credit to the Sixth Form.

STUDENT UNION farewell &

New LEADERSHIP TEAM 2017/2018

“I am delighted to be taking over the Student Union with a great team by my side and hopefully helping the students of the Sixthform to get the best experience they can have. Our Union has achieved many things already such as students cars are protected from damage by school pupils, repairs of toilets, breakfast items before exams and changes to lesson delivery. Our aspirations in the Student Union are to help all students achieve their full potential, by providing physical and emotional support if needed. We stand up for the students of the sixth form and aim to make sure you get what you deserve. Meetings are scheduled weekly in the sixth form building. All students are welcome and invited to join us to express their issues. Every issue is recorded and dealt with as soon as possible. Every issue is taken seriously by the team. I am excited for the new year 12 to join us as they are automatically in the Student Union and we are eager to hear their contributions.” Emily Arnold - President & Sciences Officer for 2017/2018

PSYCHOLOGY STUDENTS GIVEN EXPERT ADVICE AT PRESTIGIOUS VENUE

“It has been a privilege to lead the Student Union this year and fight for your voices to be heard. When we formed the Student Union, there was no mouth-piece for students – and I believe that we have had many successes in putting you first. They include making sure that students’ cars are protected from damage by school pupils, repairs to the toilets, breakfast items before exams and changes to lesson delivery, as well as many other things that we hope you’ve noticed. But we’ve also fought for our members as individuals – providing advice and counsel when people needed help. I’d like to thank all the people who sat on the Executive Body, all the people that attended meetings, those who voted in our December elections and those of you who joined the Union and add to our numbers to give us a stronger hand – you have made a difference. There is still work to do though, and I am delighted that Emily, Morgan and many others will be leading the Union next year to continue to put you – our members – first. Along with the new Year 12s, who will automatically join the Union when they start, they will be great leaders.” Erin Raif - Graduate of 2017

The Stanford & Corringham Sixth Form Centre recently took all 40 of the A Level Psychology students to the AQA Psychology Revision Work Shop which was held in Westminster's Emmanuel Centre. Students were taught by leading authors in their field including Cara Flannagan and Mike Cardwell who have written numerous textbooks and have also worked as chief examiners for the AQA board. The day included revision on all Introductory Topics – Memory, Social Influence, Attachment, Abnormal Psychology, and Research Methods. The ‘Approaches’ elements which revised Cognitive, Humanistic, Psychodynamic, Behavioural and Biological were extremely beneficial and gave fantastic advice on how to compare and contrast the approaches. Students were most impressed with the advice from the Chief Examiner of AQA who also delivered the course, providing some valuable writing techniques on the subtleties of how to pick up extra marks when answering specific questions. We are certain that the course was a valuable and rewarding experience as the psychology students enter their exam period and will contribute to another excellent group of results for the Stanford & Corringham Sixth Form Centre.

A Level English students have attended a variety of lecture days to support their study of KS5 English this year. The first trip to London involved a lecture day on Hamlet. Students were able to listen to lectures from a range of professors who specialise in Shakespeare’s plays. The lecturers were quite eccentric, enjoying the opportunity to perform Shakespearean verse, or in some cases make repeated analogies between Hamlet and Brexit. Later lecture days throughout the year have also included a Year 13 Lecture day on the poetry of Rossetti and a further lecture day on A Streetcar Named Desire, in which one of the lecturers had actually met the playwright, Tennessee Williams himself! Overall, despite the rather uncomfortable seats in some of London’s more historic buildings, the lecture days have offered students useful and varied interpretations of the text as well as an idea of what it would be like to study at university. 11

BIOLOGY BREAD BAKERS The year 13 Biologists put their biological knowledge to good use by manipulating the growing conditions of Saccharomyces cerevisiae; a species of yeast which has been instrumental to winemaking, baking and brewing since ancient times. As part of their biotechnology unit the biologists need to understand how this little yeast organism respires and grows. The students gained an understanding of how the proteins gliadin and glutenin hydrate to form a fine gluten mesh and how through kneading and stretching this can be used to trap carbon dioxide bubbles . Oh and also make rather decent bread in the process! Some students took this learning home with them and spent the following weekend baking some more loafs of their own at home.

This season proved a tough experience in comparison to the success of last year. 2016 saw the majority

of the team graduate in the summer which meant squad members weren’t as high and the Academy was faced with more or less a brand new team. After winning Division 2 South last year we were promoted to Division 1 South playing against schools/college like Barking Abbey, Rushcroft school, Shenfield High school and Palmers College. All of which have multiple squads of players and their student intake is much greater than that of Stanford & Corringham Sixth Form Centre.

It was a tough season, but we managed to survive relegation and finish 7th in the league. The main highlights were beating both Barking Abbey and Rushcroft School who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. Also seeing long time Sixth Form servant Jonathon Edwards finally making his Stanford & Corringham Sixth Form Football Academy debut. Mr Wilson would like to personally thank all the following for their commitment and time this year: George Priestley, Alex Papantoniou, Harry Spence, Ryan Knight, Aiden Strizovic, Ashley Fuente, Jonathon Edwards, Daniel Davidson, Thomas James, Harry Philpot, Abdul Akinloye, Ben Lyon, Luke Filsell and Joe Clifforth.
