A big thank you to Catfield School. There is No Planet B

AN’s second comment: Have you ever wondered about the ‘sustainable’ label placed on new wooden furniture? I do not like buying new, buy second-hand to recycle as much as possible. There was a documentary on TV about the rain forest. A person from the programme marked this huge hardwood tree that had taken hundreds of years to grow and guess where it ended up? .In England in a builders merchant as shuttering ply for the building trade. This plywood sheet is used to form concrete and is used once and then thrown away! So much for ‘sustainable’. How about pallets from the builders merchants, a lot of these are hardwood, (from where?) they are non-returnable and are usually burnt.” Wow! Thank you AN! Two perfect examples of someone with knowledge noticing and doing what he can to help Planet A! Please come out of the woodwork and let’s share the problems and solutions! As a group we can make good changes happen! -My point this month is: Let’s use what we have! I was saddened to hear more than half of Catfield parishioners do not use our Catfield Stores! Have you been in? Have you seen how the space for sale items has doubled? If they currently don’t stock what you want, then just ask them! They want people to tell them! Why travel, use fuel and time when all you need to do is walk to the shop…now open all hours! Equally we have a superb welcoming pub! Use it! Tell your friends! Meet them there…Meet new ones! Let’s celebrate our Forest Primary School! I spoke to a parent in the Village Shop just last week who was so proud of the education her child was receiving there. These children will soon be running things when we are old or pushing up the daisies. Why not offer your help to listen to children read at the school? Help them learn! School staff would be very grateful. If you have an expertise or a special memory, why not offer to share it? Why not suggest you could accompany groups of pupils when staff take them walking around the parish? The more the merrier…new adults do help make school experiences more varied… sewing, music, languages, woodwork, history, geography…! We have a welcoming Church! Why not come to a service and enjoy a cuppa with us afterwards! Equally the quiet of the Church and the Churchyard can be savoured any day of the week! We have a large number of clubs run in Catfield by volunteers. Why not check them out! Or if none

spark your interest why not start one of your own! Catfield Crown kindly allows clubs to meet

His words: “…In response to your article, a practical suggestion would be to encourage people to use the bus. We went to Yarmouth Friday and there were 3 on the bus, coming back we got off at Catfield and the bus was then empty to go on to North Walsham. This is obviously not even paying for the fuel!”

Happy New Year to you all! As I am writing this I am reflecting on my first term as Executive Head for the Swallowtail Federation. I had the honour of celebrating Christmas with all 3 of our schools, which was wonderful. It did however mean I ate 3 Christmas dinners, thankfully not all on the same day. The children all shone at the various carol services and nativities - I felt such pride in them all. Catfield has had a busy first term to the new academic year. Mrs Sinkins has settled into her role as the new Head of School and has already had a fantastic impact on the teaching and learning across the school. The team, as ever, are fantastic and so dedicated always going that extra mile. From January we welcome Miss Laura Fiddeman who will be teaching our Year 3/4 class for the rest of this academic year, we know she will be a fantastic asset to our team. All that leaves me to say is thank you for all the ongoing support from our community. We hope that many of your received a Christmas cracker through your door - our little way of saying thank you.

6 January 2020 Council sets up new housing leasing scheme Guaranteed rental income for landlords North Norfolk District Council has set up a leasing scheme giving landlords of private properties the option to lease them to the local authority for an initial period of twelve months, with guaranteed rental income. The scheme has been devised to assist people most in need into good quality accommodation and offers private landlords the opportunity to lease their property with a number of benefits. NNDC can provide dedicated support service from the Council’s Tenancy Sustainment Officers who will be available for the duration of the tenancy to ensure that any issues are dealt within a prompt manner. The property would then be returned to the landlord in the same condition it was leased to the council, subject to fair wear and tear. It is expected that the scheme will assist the Council in achieving its long-term aim to reduce the number of families currently being accommodated in unsuitable temporary accommodation. Cllr. Sarah Bütikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “This scheme will allow the Council to take the hassle associated with being a landlord away and will help provide those in need with good quality accommodation. “This council already works hard to bring empty homes in to use, thus reducing their blight on our communities; this scheme is another step to tackling the issue and in turn, will provide landlords with a guaranteed rental income.” North Norfolk District Council has helped to bring hundreds of homes back into use through a wide range of action; from working together with owners to support renovations, demolition and re-building to taking enforcement action and undertaking compulsory purchase where owners fail to make positive changes. Hard though it is to believe, February sees the first stirrings of spring. In tree-holes and nest-boxes tawny owls may already be nesting. Mistle thrushes begin to shout their loud, day-dreaming songs from the tops of tall trees and in the reeds Cetti’s warblers plink merrily. Amazingly, warmer days in February may see the emergence of the first queen bumblebees, of several species. They have hibernated through the winter, having mated last summer, and must now found their own colonies. Grey seals have their pups in the middle of winter – December and January are peak times for females to give birth in Norfolk. Unlike the smaller common seals which give birth in the summer, grey seal pups are suckled for three weeks by their mothers and remain on the beach for much of this period. Should you come across grey seal pups please view from a distance and don't disturb them – they may appear deserted, but the mother is usually nearby out at sea. Norfolk has nationally important numbers of this exciting marine mammal and all around the Norfolk coast you may be lucky enough to spot a seal's head appearing as they surface from diving for fish. A small, insectivorous mammal, the common shrew has tiny eyes and a large nose giving it keen sense of smell. Shrews live life in the fast lane, hectically snuffling through the undergrowth for their prey, which includes earthworms, spiders and chrysalises. They can be found in most habitats but prefer woodland and grassland. Active by day and night, they are very territorial and aggressive for their size and can sometimes be heard fighting, their high-pitched squeaks particularly noticeable during the summer. Adults may only live for a year, just long enough to have three or four litters of around six young. Created between half a million and two million years ago, the Cromer Forest Bed stretches from Weybourne all the way down to Kessingland in north Suffolk and is rich in fossils. Found here has been the oldest and best-preserved mammoth skeleton in the world, a 500,000-year-old flint axe that was the Swiss Army Knife of its day and 850,000-year-old human footprints that are the earliest evidence of mankind found outside the Great Rift Valley in Africa. This stretch of coast, which we call the deep history coast was also the last piece of Britain that was still joined to the Continent, until as little as 7000 years ago when the link, called Doggerland, was finally inundated. Even now the sea is very shallow here, as little as 100 metres deep, and that’s why it’s such a good place to put all those lovely wind farms you see just off the coast in Norfolk.

In Living Power Remake us. It is always interesting to look at the entries in our visitors books. So many people visit to research family history and try to get a glimpse of the lives of those who for generations have lived and worshipped in our villages. Bringing our past into the present and looking forward to the future is particularly relevant to us as we are going through a period without a full-time Vicar. This time in the history of our Benefice is one which presents great challenges and opportunities for all of us as we ask the questions What is important for us about Church?, How can we support and help the Christian communities to grow and flourish? We need to address these and other questions if our Church family history is to grow in faith, hope and love. Please pray and support us as we journey on and await the Ministry of our new Incumbent (whoever that may be and whenever they come to us). Please consider worshipping with us on a regular basis. Prayer, Practical support, Worship. Lets welcome these three challenges and opportunities and journey on together wherever God is leading us. Ian Watton.

Tony Hodder

7th August 1948 – 7th December 2019

Mary Hodder and her family would like to thank friends and neighbours for their kind messages of sympathy, friendship and support, following their sad loss. Donations totalling over £210 have been passed to Ward 15 of the James Paget Hospital whose care of Tony was unsurpassed. Thanks also go to Murrell Cork, Funeral Directors, and to the celebrant Richard Mills. Last, but by no means least, a massive thank you to Gail and Scott at The Crown Inn, not only for the refreshments they provided, but for their never ending love and support during Tony’s illness.

Carol Service and Nativity Unfortunately Alice the donkey was unable through circumstances well beyond her control to appear as the highlight of this year’s Carol Service and carry Mary around the church. Hopefully she will be able to be with us next year and add that element of surprise to the Nativity. Alice having happily launched herself across the nave to devour a flower arrangement last year much to the amusement of all In church. The story this year was told through the eyes of a cow in the stable and her annoyance at having her manger taken from her and her gradual change of attitude and pride of being part of the well known Christmas story. AN EXTRACT OF THE DRAFT MINUTES OF THE CATFIELD PARISH COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON WEDNESDAY 8th JANUARY IN THE VILLAGE HALL

Public Forum: Mrs Daniels (a parishioner) stated that the notice board on the corner of New Road and The Street is falling to pieces. Mr Hill agreed to take a look to see if it safe, he will remove the notice board if he thinks it is unsafe. The clerk will look at options for replacement. Mr Wakefield (a parishioner) reported that the residents of the bungalow adjoining the Sandholes say that the area next to their property is a mess and they have asked if they could clean it up. Dr Bacon and Mr Beckley will have a look and talk to the people concerned. Richard Price, County Councillor had received revised a document approving revised highways works to the Neaves site. Dr Bacon stated that there were no significant changes, it looks as if there would be a footpath in front of the terrace houses which would be an improvement. Mr Price went on to say that Potter Heigham Parish Council would still like to share SAM2 signs with Catfield. There is funding available under the Parish Partnership Scheme and Mr Price has some funds available from his budget. The cost to the parish, hopefully would be in the region of £300- £500. This will be discussed under Highways. Mrs Millership, District Councillor, had received a document from NNDC regarding a housing leasing scheme where NNDC would act as agent for private individuals wishing to rent out their property. This information will be sent to the magazine. Matters Arising: NNDC have received ten requests for an election to fill the vacancy on the Parish Council. Applications can be made via the Electoral Commission website or by contacting NNDC. Applications can be made between 9th and 17th January and if there are more than two candidates an election will be held on 13th February. Mr Filgate asked if there would be a cost to the Parish Council, it would be in region of £500 to £600. Mr Beckley reported that he had been to see the residents concerned regarding the planning application in Church Road, there had been no site notice at the time but there is now. Mr Filgate asked what the timescale is for putting the notice up. Mr Richard stated that the consultation period runs from when the notice is put up. John Ware from the PCC contacted the Parish Council asking them to reconsider their decision for a dog bin near the church, it had been agreed to discuss this matter at this meeting. Mr Beckley stated that Mrs Harris had gone to a great deal of trouble to gather evidence, the conclusion was that a dog bin near the church would not make any difference. The mess in the churchyard is made by dogs that are not on leads and Dr Bacon clears it up. Mr Hill asked if there was evidence to make a dog bin necessary. Mr Beckley replied that the dog bin near the Chapel is well used and covers most of the circular walks. Mr Beckley proposed that it was not necessary to have a new dog bin near the church, this was seconded by Mr Filgate. There were 6 votes in favour, one against and two abstentions. Correspondence A letter had been received from NNDC regarding VE Day and Battle of Britain celebrations. Ms Johnson will attend the meeting at NNDC on 20th January, she will also co-ordinate any events if necessary. (contd.)

Planning: 29 St Catherine’s Avenue, front porch. No objections. All Saints Church: Dr Bacon reported that the procedure to appoint a new Rector is under way. Highways: Ms Johnson proposed that the Parish Council proceeds with the SAM2 signs, this was seconded by Mr Filgate will all in agreement. Highways reported that the ditch in Limes Road had been cleared, the gullies in New Road (near the chicken farm) have been programmed for clearance, the footways in New Road and Lea Road have been programmed for resurfacing. They had been unable to find the sunken manhole cover so Mrs Wickens will take photos. With regard to a footway through the centre of the village a trod could be offered but there is no available space for this other than to take part of the highway which is not possible. Highways reported that the drainage system in School Road had been cleared following the recent flooding, there were leaves in the drains. They don’t have any records of the system relating to what Natural England say should have been done. The engineer does not think it is a new system. Ms Johnson had sent photos of the flooding which have been passed on to Highways. The school car park does not flood so it must have its own drainage system. There are potholes in Plumsgate Road opposite Holly Farm , Ludham Road at the Sharp Street junction, these will be reported. Mr Read (a parishioner) stated that Church Road from the cottage towards the church is in a very bad state, the road is subsiding into the bank. These will all be reported. Schools: Ms Johnson reported that the lights at the school are now going off before 6pm. There had been concern about speeding in School Road perhaps the SAM2 signs could be used in this area. The school would like to see more community members in school, helping with reading sharing skills. There is to be a trip to Disneyland, and children will also be going to the O2 Arena to sing. All three schools in the Federation are doing well. As the date of the next meeting was set for Wednesday 5th February at 7.30pm in the village hall.

Empathy Support Group Empathy, is a suicide bereavement support group. Everyone running Empathy have

suffered this kind of loss and are reaching out to help people whose life has been

dreadfully affected by a family member or friend taking their own life. The devastation

this leaves behind is very hard to deal with, which is why Empathy was formed and can

offer informal one to one meetings, or group meetings, where it really helps to talk to

someone who has gone through this. Meetings are held in Stalham, Sprowston,

Our case this month is a beautiful Bichon Frise who is approaching 10 years of age. She presented with blood in her urine and signs of cystitis. Prior to this she has passed tiny little stones with no problem, but on this occasion she was clearly having trouble. She was admitted to the practice for further tests to determine the extent of her problem. Both radiography (X-Rays) and ultrasonography can be used to identify bladder stones (uroliths) in the bladder and the kidneys. As you can see below, stones can be clearly visualised in the bladder, but fortunately there were none stuck in her urethra or within the kidneys. When there are high numbers of large stones causing clinical problems the best treatment option is surgery, so the decision was made to take her to theatre straight away. Once the bladder was opened we found hundreds of stones varying in size from large marbles to sand and grit sized uroliths. All of these stones have to be removed and the bladder thoroughly flushed in order to prevent further irritation. Samples of the uroliths have been sent away for analysis in order to help us modify her diet and hopefully prevent further production of these bladder stones. Bladder stones can be a problem in cats and dogs and many small furries such as guinea pigs, so any recurrent episodes of cystitis are always worth having looked into if they don’t clear up as expected. Interestingly Dalmatians are even more prone to kidney stones than other dogs due to their inability to breakdown something called purine, so they often have to be fed a very specific diet indeed, worth considering for any Dalmatian owners out there!

FARMING NEWS by A.W.A. - February 2020 This month is Vegan January where we are encouraged not to eat meat. Vegans claim there are over 600,000 of them in the UK, that’s less than 1% of the population, I don’t think that there is anything to worry about in supplying meat to the market place because the population is rising. Vegans claim eating soya beans in going to save the planet, reverse climate change and put the fires out in Australia. It’s absolute rubbish. Let them have a sheep’s diet, it’s their choice but they only have one stomach whereas herbivores have four stomachs which gives them the ability to digest green food and so are Vegetarians really saving the planet or adding to the carbon footprint? On the farm there have been 10 days of reasonably dry weather which has permitted some sugar beet harvesting and winter ploughing. Not much else has happened. Every year the Oxford Farming Conference is in early January. This year the key speaker was Theresa Villiers MP and her theme was putting farming in the centre of the challenges of climate change and nature recovery. We are told that the Agriculture Bill will get its first reading within two months. She has also announced a farming funding package for the next two years, but on closer inspection was one year plus a bit of stewardship in year two. If ELMS (Environmental Land Management) is the new word for subsidies, there seems to be a funding gap and I’m not clear how it will be successful. What she really wants is farming to deliver value for money as well as boosting sustainable productivity to feed the Nation. I’m up for the challenge but I suspect most NGO’s have a different vision of what that means and the net result could be exactly the opposite of what was intended. She wants farmers to be the first generation to hand on the land in a better environmental state- she clearly has not been to Catfield where the wildlife has never been in such large numbers. So this is how I see my farm over the next few years if Theresa has her way. More woodland and hedgerows, more flower rich pastures, more pollinators, more ponds and lakes will be the future. That takes land out of production and it’s likely that yields will reduce with the lack of new chemistry, the result will be a smaller national crop and higher prices with probable large swings in prices. Animals grazing weed invested meadows will require more treatments to maintain production unless we are going to a more extensive grazing system and winter housing. Theresa’s plan is to raise farm gate prices and reduce farmers’ reliance on subsidies but this plan is floored as the very people who have just voted in this Government are the people who are going to have to foot the bill. The Government is currently checking production methods in countries who we hope to trade with. If their standards are lower we won’t trade. Hopefully the new Agriculture Bill will set some minimum standards which are acceptable to all parties. Given that our farming standards are some of the highest in the World and the USA has just done a trade deal with China, I’m not certain where our food is coming from. So if we are to eat lower quality food and we are what we eat, Matt Hancock ought to sort out the NHS asap as its going to be required for those people on lower salaries who can’t afford the best food. Theresa goes on to say that she will emphasise food security at Cabinet meetings but at the same time she wants 75,000 acres of trees a year, which presently we can’t eat. Watch this space over the next 24 months as it’s far from clear what will actually happen, this creates uncertainty and lack of investment. And that leads to lower yields over time. AWA 12.1.2020

Baked Mackerel with Horseradish Butter

Ingredients 4 x 275 g (10oz) fresh whole mackerel, gutted and heads removed Zest and juice of 1 large orange (set aside the orange halves) 2 tbsp olive oil 4tbsp fresh white breadcrumbs For the horseradish butter 25 g (1oz) unsalted butter, softened 3 tbsp hot horseradish sauce 1½tbsp chopped fresh chives 2 tbsp chopped flat-leafed parsley

Method

1. Beat together all the ingredients for the horseradish butter in a small bowl.

Once mixed, place the mixture on a small piece of greaseproof paper, roll the paper to form a sausage, then fold up each end to secure. Freeze for 10 minutes to firm up.

2. Preheat the oven to 180C. Pat the fish dry with kitchen paper and put on a lipped baking sheet, well spaced out. Roughly chop what's left of the orange, then scatter over the fish. Make three diagonal cuts, about 2.5cm (1in) deep, along the top of each fish.

3. Whisk together the orange juice and olive oil. Mix together the breadcrumbs and orange zest, and season with salt and pepper. Brush the fish with the orange juice and oil, then sprinkle over the breadcrumbs. Cook for 20min or until the fish is golden and the flesh flakes easily.

4. Top each mackerel with a slice of horseradish butter and serve immediately. Serve with: baked sweet potatoes and steamed vegetables, such as broad beans and peas. D.S.

Wroxham and Hoveton Lions Club

As this is my first report in the New Year may I wish you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Firstly some good news. After a meeting with Hoveton Village Hall Committee our Village Fete and Fun Day on Sunday August 2nd 2020 will now go ahead at this venue and every first Sunday of August for the future years. Thanks to the Hall Committee for working with us. Further details will be announced in the coming months. I know it seems a long while since Christmas but we had a great time out and about during December with our Santa’s Sleigh. Although we did not walk the streets, wherever we stopped in the villages and static locations at the supermarkets, it was great to see all the children’s faces - well worth taking the Sleigh for. My thanks to everybody who supported us in making a grand total of £3,273.81, which will go towards supporting many good causes. Our charity shop in the precinct at Hoveton also had a successful December and is now open seven days a week, so why not pop along and see what bargains are available. Or if you have anything to donate - good clothing, bric a brac, and toys - please take them to the shop, or ring me on 07850091570 and I will arrange collection. The Christmas raffle in the shop raised £200, which will be going to Guide dogs for the Blind. Thanks to all for buying tickets. The £100 charity draw for December was won by V Arterton from Hoveton who nominated Diabetes UK and the January draw was won by Sally Clark from Horstead who nominated Action Arthritis. Both had donated goods to our charity shop. Our next craft fair will be held on Sunday March 8th 2020 at Broadland Youth and Community Centre Hoveton. 10am to 3pm. If anyone would like a table to sell their craft items please ring me for details 07850091570. We are always looking for new members so if you think you would like to become a Lion, which is a great organisation to be part of, just come along to one of our meetings which are held the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month, We meet at the Broadland Youth and Community Centre Hoveton at 8pm.
