Other ways to get points...
Inside Story Headline
Spirit Award! The purpose of the Area Spirit Award is to get members, advisors, and chapters as a whole more involved in activities. A chapter wins by having the most points in their spirit award “account” at the end of the DECA year. Points can be obtained in multiple ways such as; attending an Area event, “liking” the Area 6 FB Page, sending Britany a picture of your
DECA Chapter, having a chapter visitation, or being the fastest email reply to any email updates Britany sends out. The winning chapter is given the trophy, shown at the left, to keep in their DECA classroom for the following school year. The trophy will be engraved with the school name and winning year. My hope is that future Area 6
President’s will continue the Area 6 Spirit Award, therefore the trophy will be a “traveling” trophy and have many different school names on it. The points for each chapter will be shown in each newsletter. If you ever have any questions about how your chapter got its points, ask Britany!
Spirit Award Points:
Chiawana - 58
Grandview - 3
Hanford - 132
Kamiakin – 147
Kennewick - 190
Pasco – 114
Richland - 224
Southridge - 82
**The Area President’s home chapter can only earn points for events that do not require the Area President’s attendance.

Megan Filippello
Area 6 September Member of the Month
V O L U M E 1 , I S S U E 2
Megan is a senior at Kamiakin High School and has been in DECA for 2 years. She is
currently the President of the KaHS DECA Chapter and will be completing the 85
page School-Based Enterprise event at Gold Level.. She has given up an extra period
every day to devote herself to her DECA officer responsibilities. Megan is now a
manager at The Trading Post, (school store) and has proven
her dedication by giving up her lunches and working
countless hours at basketball games. Megan is involved in
many DECA activities which include the Area VI Officer
Retreat, Kamiakin DECA Officer Retreat, Junior Achievement,
Halloween House, Daddy Daughter Dance, DECA Week,
Kennewick Fall Leadership Conference, and many more!
Megan is also in extra-curricular activities - marching band,
harp ensemble, symphony orchestra, key club, link crew, tennis, national honor
society, youth group, and youth group counselor. Congratulations Megan on your
achievements, Kamiakin is lucky to have such a stand out President!
In early September, your chapter officers
joined Britany & Ashley at the Area 6 DECA
Officer Retreat held at Kamiakin High
School. With about 35 attendees and
advisors, we had a lot of fun planning and
sharing ideas about the upcoming year.
Britany & Ashley would like to thank all that
came and helped make the event a success!

WHAT IT IS
The Movement is an international student-driven fundraiser for the Muscular
Dystrophy Association (MDA) in which all of DECA can participate. This project has
been organized by former Oklahoma State Officer, Jay Koontz, and DECA’s
National Officer Team. The goal of The Movement is to strengthen the MDA-DECA
partnership by uniting chapter efforts to support MDA through community service
or by raising funds for MDA research.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED
Get involved simply by raising money for MDA and serving them in your local
community. A toolkit will give ideas for fundraisers and service opportunities. It will
be sent to each chapter when they join online at https://www.ourmvmt.com/join.

DECA WEEK IS NOW DECA MONTH
We shouldn’t have to celebrate DECA’s
awesomeness in just one week, so now November
is DECA Month. This allows chapters flexibility in
choosing a “DECA Week” that best suits their
schedules, or celebrate DECA the entire month!

who do change the

DECA DIMENSIONS IS NOW DECA DIRECT
For the first time in 20 years, the organization’s magazine is taking on a new design,
name and most importantly, a new concept. This fall, meet DECA Direct, a new age
magazine that now features both DECA and Collegiate DECA members. The new concept
blends print and interactive content. You’ll notice more integration with social media,
encouraging you to interact with authors on Twitter and leave comments on Facebook.
You’ll eventually be able to read articles trough social media and create conversations
with members from across the globe. DECA Direct will be a work in progress throughout
this year. In addition to the social media additions, we’re also making the magazine
more visual and including questions at the end of each article.
DECA CHAPTER CAMPAIGNS
THRIVE with your DECA chapter this year by participating in DECA’s five chapter
campaigns. View the information inside this flyer (http://www.deca.org/_docs/
pageattachments/DECA_Campaigns.pdf) for cool ideas. For all of the campaigns except
the Membership Campaign, you will submit your entries at the web address provided
inside this flyer. Recognition for the Membership Campaign will be determined based on
your membership submitted in the online membership system. Outstanding submissions
may be highlighted on DECA Direct.
Meet Victoria Cana, your Western Region Vice President. Victoria lives in New York City
studying Public Relations at NYU. Make sure to connect with her at WRLC!

Chiawana DECA Serves the Community Bailey Grow, CHS DECA President
V O L U M E 1 , I S S U E 2
Chiawana DECA has always made it a major priority to help in the community every chance we
get. Throughout the year we work very closely with organizations like the Edith Bishel Center, Safari
International, The Tri City Americans and Goodwill. Not to mention the times we work the concession
stand at our school’s sporting events throughout or the times we are asked to babysit small children
during conferences and open house nights at our school. We help host many various events for the
Edith Bishel Center. Some of these events include, Dinner in the Dark, the haunted forest and the
Howl-O-Ween party. Aside from competing in the Project Goodwill competition each year, we also
have a donation trailer at our school where all teachers, faculty and students along with members of
the community are encouraged to donate their gently used items to those in need. The CHS DECA
officers worked at a Hockey for Haiti game hosted by the Tri City Americans, where all the proceeds
went to fund a home for children in Haiti. Although many of us could use the finances ourselves, we
are all very willing to donate our time to those in need. By volunteering at these events throughout
the year, our team gains a sense of pride in knowing that we helped from the goodness of our hearts.
Sometimes organizations are so thankful for us that even though we volunteered to help, they will
donate money back to the CHS DECA fund in recognition of our hard work. We take great pride in the
many events and competitions we attend each year. However our true spirit comes from knowing that
as a team, we are able to help others’ desires become reality.
Bailey Grow
CHS DECA President
