    A reminder about Uniform –

    particularly earrings. Students are

    not permitted to wear “dangly”

type earrings – to avoid injury to

    earlobes. Only hoops or sleepers

    are to be worn.

    Student Drop off/Pick up. A

reminder to follow all parking and

traffic rules when dropping off or

picking up your student from BHHS.

Please allow your student to walk a

few minutes from the gate to meet

your vehicle at the end of the day

    – this helps to ease traffic

    congestion and improves safety in

    the afternoons. Students using the

bus bay – remember to walk at all

    times in that area.

    The school welcomes our new

    canteen operators, Healthy

    Gourmet Canteens Australia. The

    new menu and pricelist are

    available in this newsletter and

    online. Students will have the

    opportunity to try some delicacies

    this Thursday at recess.

Back to Baulko 2021 - Wellbeing & Orientation

Welcome back to Yrs 8-12 and a big welcome to Yr 7, as well as other new students to other years. The

staff are all looking forward to a fantastic year with the students this year! To begin the year on a positive

note, several wellbeing/transition initiatives were run last week.

On Friday the 28th Yr 7 were welcomed for their first day at Baulko! Their first day involved a full day with

their Peer Support Leaders, where they participated in an introduction to the school program which

involved fun and games, but also the serious side of school layout and making new friends. Big thanks

to the wonderful Yr10 Peer support leaders that came in a day early to run the activities and get to know

their groups. Activities on the day involved a formal school tour, getting to know you activities and ice

breakers, some discussion around school rules and procedures and lots of fun games, all led by the Year

    10 Peer Support Leaders.

On Monday Yr 7 continued their Orientation over 2 days with a variety of workshops which included

    • information from the SRC about the school via a Panel set up,

    • Growth Mindset Workshop (a fun way of looking at how to cope with challenges of High School

    through activities)

    • Scavenger Hunt (fun way of getting to know places around the school)

    • IT workshop on getting laptops set up and finally establishing some understanding of where our

students are at with their literacy skills.

    • Activity sessions with their year advisors Ms Thurlow and Mr Huang.

    • Workshop with the school counsellor focused on managing stress and transitioning to High

    School.

From the photos you can see that students were engaged and looked like they were having fun in

    their new environment.

Yr 11 also had 2 days of Orientation, to support their transition into the senior years, which included

    • The distribution and discussion of Assessment processes

    • A careers workshop

    • A workshop focused on overcoming procrastination led by the School Psychologist

    • A Growth Mindset workshop focused on how to get the most out of work, assessments and

    feedback for improvement

    • A Yr 12 Panel where experiences were shared by current Year 12 students

    • A panel led by former Baulko students from 2017 to share their wisdom, advice and tips

    • Fun activities with their Year Advisors Mr Iaconis and Mr Dunne.

These wellbeing days are a great opportunity for students to learn a lot and strengthen their

relationships with their peers and with their Year Advisors. We encourage students to implement

some of the ideas and strategies they were exposed to during these days.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff that gave up their time to lead

workshops for the benefit of the students (in no particular order)

Sport at BHHS – Information for Year 7

    WEDNESDAY SPORT

Year 7 do NOT participate in weekly Wednesday sport. Instead classes are scheduled during

    this time.

Wednesday afternoon sport begins for all students in year 8 when students have the option of

trialling for an interschool grade sport team, or registering for a recreational sport.

    CARNIVALS

All year 7 students are invited to attend & participate in the school swimming carnival. The

school cross country & athletics carnivals are full school events with compulsory participation.

Qualifiers from events held represent Baulkham Hills High at the Hills Zone carnivals (zone level),

Sydney West (regional level) & eventually CHS (state level) & above. You will find out if you

have qualified as a representative at the carnival & the immediate days following the carnival.

    KNOCKOUT SPORT

Knockout teams in various sports are selected by the organising teacher. These occur at

different times throughout the year, and involve games against other schools until the team is

knocked out of the competition by losing a game. Games are played until the final school in

the state remains undefeated. Year 7 have the option of trialling for these teams but it is much

more likely that these sports are filled by students from older age groups. Competitions are

mostly open age & so teams are playing against open age students from other schools. We

do have an entry in under 15 boys knockout basketball & send junior teams for the table tennis

    cup.

HILLS ZONE & SYDNEY WEST REPRESENTATIVE TEAMS

Hills Zone also sends representative teams to compete at Sydney West championships in

various sports. These teams are selected & coached by a teacher from one of the seven

schools in our zone as the nominated convenor. These sports are again largely open age

group teams so popular sports such as soccer and basketball are filled by senior age students.

It is rare for a year 7 to gain selection for a Hills Zone representative team, but it can happen

& often does happen in specialist & individual competitions such as Sydney West gymnastics

or trampolining. Teams play other zones in order to be considered for selection into Sydney

West representative teams & beyond. The trial dates for these teams will be announced when

they arise through messages on assembly, classroom & the Hills Zone media pages.

ALL CURRENT SCHOOL SPORT INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE EACH WEEK ON OUR GOOGLE

Year 8 welcome to Sport 2021

School Sport in 2021 is on Wednesday afternoons during periods 6, 7 and 8. The following points

may answer some of the questions that you have, but the golden rule is ‘if in doubt, ask

questions’, and the person to ask is the Sport Organiser Mr Filewood. You will find him in the

Sport Office in the bottom of D Block.

    • Grade sport is played in the Hills Zone Competition. Other participating schools are –

Cumberland, Greystanes, James Ruse, Model Farms, Muirfield, Northmead & Girraween

The grade competition follows a home and away draw. Bus fares are paid each week a

team plays away at the opposition school. Bus fares in 2021 will be $7:00 per person each

time a team travels away to a venue. This is paid by purchasing a 5 or 10 ride bus ticket

from the office. This ticket is presented at the bus when boarding.

    • ALL Grade and Recreational Sports commence Wednesday 10th FEB. (Week 3)

    • Information for sport is announced on the Monday morning assembly and listed on the

screen above the sports office door & especially on moodle & the google classroom sport

    page – itfuvgw

    • Buses for sport leave the bus bay straight after period 5 at the beginning of lunch, 12:05

    • Students will wear their sports uniform to school on Wednesdays. Regular noncompliance

with uniform and sport requirements can result in detention notices.

    • Some grade teams are required to purchase uniforms for their competitions. The touch

football & oztag teams have a uniform, the soccer teams have a uniform, the cricket team

and the basketball teams have a uniform. These need to be purchased from sport. You

will receive a note for payment at the office and then pick up your uniform when you

present your receipt to the sports office. The uniforms are the same each year so they can

be worn each year and also for knockout teams. Uniforms are $30. Please wear your PE

uniform on Wednesdays and change into your team shirt for the game.

    • If, for some reason you are unable to do sport, such as due to injury or recovery from illness,

you must have a note from home explaining the nature of the problem and present this

note to the Sport Office before school on Wednesday morning. You will then be directed

to attend the non-sport room on that afternoon.

    • Recreational sport buses return to school by 2.30pm and grade buses by approximately

2.45pm. If your sport venue is near home it is possible to be given permission to not return

to school on the bus. You must have a note from your parents requesting permission to

make your own way home. This note may cover the whole term and must be presented to

the deputy & sport organiser to get it signed. No note means that you return to school on

    the bus.
