Welcome to the second issue of BMT Nigel Gee’s Yacht Design Newsletter. Since our first issue we have had a very busy time. With over 15 vessels under construction between 10 and 95m our office is enjoying an interesting and challenging workload
Yacht Design Newsletter
Issue 2 | Summer 2007
Our portfolio of current work covers over 20 significant projects from small superyacht tenders to detail design of 96m, 85m, 74m, 52m and 45m yachts, class level design, concept development of 80m, 73m and 70m vessels and consultancy services on yachts up to 162m.
We have been busy on the conference and show circuit having presented papers in Holland, Dubai
and Nice as well as exhibiting at the Monaco and Dubai boat shows. We will again be exhibiting at Monaco in 2007 as part of the Superyacht UK team.
BMT Group have also rebranded resulting in a new look, logo and website which is now fully updated with our current and past projects. Go to www.bmtyachts.com to have a look.

BMT Nigel Gee team up with VPLP
Forthcoming and recent events
L’entente cordial is alive and well at BMT Nigel Gee as we continue our successful partnership with French multihull specialists VPLP on a number of large catamaran projects – both sail and power.
Following our successful collaboration on the 45m sailing catamaran ‘Gemini’ BMT Nigel Gee and VPLP have forged an excellent working relationship that continues to grow with every new project. ‘Gemini’, currently under construction at Derecktor Shipyard, will be the largest sailing catamaran in the world once she is launched in Spring 2008 and will be a benchmark in innovative design and engineering.
‘Lady Sophie’, the 19m motor cruiser catamaran designed to be produced in series by Sophie Yachts, is also a VPLP design incorporating a hull form from BMT Nigel Gee. With catamarans becoming increasingly popular there is a clear rise in demand for the large stable platform they offer.
VPLP and BMT Nigel Gee are currently drawing up plans for a 45m high performance sailboat. Constructed from aluminum with a carbon rig, BMT Nigel Gee are undertaking the structural and mechanical design for this new project christened ‘Boreas’. The two design teams are presently developing the build specifications which will be released to a selected number of shipyards for tender in Autumn 2007.

ShadowCAT Superyacht Support Vessel
With our extensive experience in the design of high speed catamarans BMT Nigel Gee are providing the technology and naval architecture for this exciting concept. The ShadowCAT has been developed from BMT Nigel Gee’s X-Craft design; an 80m, 54 knot catamaran which was developed for the US Navy, Office of Naval Research and was launched in 2005 in the USA. This vessel was the result of an extensive research and development programme into the design of a high speed platform to meet the requirements laid down by the Office of Naval Research for a high speed, mission flexible vessel. BMT Nigel Gee’s hull form design and development programme resulted in a unique swath like catamaran form with waisted waterline sections to improve motion levels in high sea states. The vessel has transoceanic capability at 20 knots and is able to operate unrestricted at high speed in up to sea-state 5, BF6. The X-Craft is able to carry around 700 tonnes of deadweight and has a very large and flexible mission equipment handling system which comprises a fully enclosed operations bay serviced by a vertical cargo elevator to the helicopter deck, an overhead gantry (X-Y) crane system and a stern ramp capable of deploying large support vessels whilst underway.
The concept of handling, managing and storing large items of equipment on this type of platform is directly applicable to a shadow vessel and these form the basis of the technology on which much of the ShadowCAT is based. The ShadowCAT has the
capability to carry and launch three 15m tenders, a mini sub and dive store, jet skis, sailing dinghies and wheeled vehicles. Additionally there is bunkering capability to allow re-fueling of the mother-yacht as well as a large spares and consumables stowage capability. The design also features a large and un-obscured, fully compliant LY2 helicopter landing deck with a vertical elevator from the flight deck to the operations deck for helicopter stowage. The service speed is 25 knots at 85% MCR. Top speed is 30 knots and Trans-Atlantic capability
could be achieved at approximately 18 knots.
The vessels configuration and technical specifications are flexible enough to be tailored to a wide range of requirements - for example the range could be dramatically increased by using the mother-yachts bunkering or the operations bay could be re-configured to carry fewer but larger tenders. At present the vessels layout is designed to accept the owner’s arrival by helicopter with transfer by tender to the mother-yacht. A large owners reception / waiting lounge
ensures that the owner is comfortable in the event of having to spend time on board.
This concept now has a client and is undergoing further development - watch this space!
BMT Nigel Gee have recently teamed with Bjorn Johansson Design in the creation of this radical and innovative super yacht support vessel.
Derecktor 85 Progress
Late in 2006 we began detailed design work on the Derecktor 85m. Construction is now advancing at DSY’s Bridgeport shipyard in Connecticut USA. BMT Nigel Gee are providing full detailed design services for structure and pipe spools using ARL ShipConstructor.
