Where’s Wally, Cat in the Hat, Hairy Mclarey, Tinkerbelle, and Snow White. From The Art Room The Art Room would dearly love your old newspapers. Our supplies are getting rather low at the moment. Thank you very much, Andrea Fisk Our New Chickens Are Here!!! On Tuesday our ten new chickens arrived and we are all very excited. They are settling in happily to their new home, but just for a little while we will be keeping them in their coop while they adjust (they are officially temperamental adolescents at this stage). They will most likely start laying in early Spring. We will be running a competition to name all ten of them, so start thinking of some names for our gorgeous ladies and we’ll let you know soon about the competition.

LEVEL LOW DOWN Prep

Happy 99 days of Prep! In anticipation for our 100th day of Prep tomorrow the preps have been so busy practising all things 100. We have counted to 100 by 1s and 10s. We played a dice game with a partner to get all the way to 100. Then we discussed different ways of making 100, similar to our friends of 10. 1 and 9 is 10 and 10 and 90 is 100!! The preps also wrote about what they will do when they are 100! Sienna - when I am 100 I will sit on the couch and eat cheese. Lots and lots of cheese. Ethan - when I am 100 I will play football and watch a movie and eat food. Georgina - when I am 100 I will stay in bed and wait for my family and I will look after my grandchildren. Tomorrow the preps will be celebrating 100 days of school with special activities, a pyjama day dress up and a sausage sizzle lunch! Congratulations on making it to our 100th day!

Year One

This week in Year One we have been writing procedures to make puppets, lemonade and cup-cakes. We’ve been learning

about contractions. We made contraction caterpillars that helped us to learn what word made up the contraction

like can’t = cannot. We have been choosing ‘Good Fit’ books to read. A ‘Good Fit’ book is not too easy and not too

hard, it’s just right! We have continued to work on money this week. We needed a little more practice making a dollar.

This could be something we could keep practising at home. We have been trying to make sure we reuse materials

during our investigations whenever we can.

Year Two

We braved the cold on Tuesday and headed to Melbourne Zoo! We had the most fantastic day! “I loved the Zoo because the butterflies kept landing all over me. The Zoo is one of the most interesting places ever!” Lulu 2M

“The Red Panda was my favourite, but I was surprised because it more looked like a cat than a panda.” Sofia N 2M

“The Baboons were my favourite, the dad had lots of grey fur and it was much longer than the other baboons.” Wil 2M

“I saw a tiger jump up a tree and the branch broke!” Immy 2C

“I loved the seeing the elephants. The baby was so cute! They are my favourite animal.” Daisy 2K

“I enjoyed finding out interesting facts. A leopards tail is longer than its body and it balances on it when its catching its prey” Summer 2L

See page 5 for some photos showing how much we enjoyed ourselves.

Year Four

Meanwhile in Year 4, the students have finished their performance of ‘Music Through Time’. They loved taking the audience through the history of music and dance, performing classics like Amazing Grace, Waltzing Matilda, Rock Around the Clock and Flashdance. The audience couldn’t help but get involved as well. The Year 4 teachers and parents were incredibly proud of all the students who performed. Thank you To Mrs Rothberg for giving up so much of her time to make this performance special. On Friday, Year 4 were visited by representatives from the Commonwealth Bank as part of our Economics subject focus. They learned how to manage money and what it means to be an informed consumer and had lots of fun in the process.

Year Five It has been a busy week in Year 5. The students have all completed their first rotation of Literature Discussion Groups and have thoroughly enjoyed discussing, questioning, predicting and clarifying to deepen their understanding of the text. We are well and truly immersed in Economics and students have been working collaboratively in groups to develop and promote their small business ideas using business plan features such as costing, preparation, profit, goals, risk assessment and marketing. With so many extra curricular activities - visit to Mentone Girls Grammar, Girls District Footy and Kids Teaching Kids, the Year 5 students have had diverse and rich experiences this week.

Year Six This week the grade 6 students commenced Economics rotations. The focus is for the students to understand and explain

what it means to be an informed consumer. Debating is another focus of this term. We will be sending three debating

teams to Brighton Secondary College next month to compete in a debating competition with local primary schools. On

Monday some students from Brighton Secondary College will be working with some of our students in preparation for

this event. The rehearsals for Peter Pan are underway with lunchtime dance rehearsals Tuesdays and Fridays.

Kids Teaching Kids Conference Etihad Stadium Thursday 31 July—Friday 1 August Education is the key to lasting project success and a tangible cultural change in the way we view and manage our environment. The Kids Teaching Kids Conferences held around Australia for the last 13 years, and the Melbourne Water Kids Teaching Kids Conferences for the last 7 years have engaged with the younger generation in how they view the catchments, rivers and the sea and how they see management of our catchments, rivers, oceans and coasts into the future.

This event allows students from Melbourne and regional Victorian schools to look at whole of catchment issues. Students from around Melbourne and Victoria bring local stories about their environments to the Conference, after many month of research and planning with expert mentors. This event also allows for the development of cross-state and cross-curriculum materials, processes, presentation materials and networks of professionals and teachers interested in water education and natural resource management in general.

Here are our seven Water Warriors at the KTK conference this morning. They are all kitted out in their conference hoodies and looking excited and keen about the day ahead of them.

In the first workshop this morning the students ran their “Water Wisdom” game. They have developed this game themselves, designed all the aspects of how it works and how it should be played to best illustrate their “water wisdom” ideals. Special thanks go to Lorenzo (Seiji's dad) his graphic design work & Marc (Hayden's dad) for producing the floor mat used in today's workshops. Tonight there is a special Conference Dinner and then a full day tomorrow with more great activities. We look forward to hearing the about the student’s experiences in next week’s Stop Press.

My favourite time with Megu and Yuka was playing twister at home. I loved having them stay at my house. I had so many fun and enjoying times. I enjoyed having them in my classroom. They came to Foot Steps with all the Year 2’s and I loved dancing with them. After school they came to my hockey training and I taught them how to play hockey. I loved eating sushi with Megu on Japanese Day. Alex 2M

Hi, my name is Olivia Desmond. I was very fortunate to host two Japanese students whose names were Magu and Yuka. They arrived on Tuesday the 22nd and left on Sunday the 27th of July. It was Magu’s birthday while we were here and we made sure that she had an enjoyable time. It was also my dad’s birthday too, so we had a double celebration. I think Magu and Yuka enjoyed visiting BPS and liked the activities that they did on Japan-Australia day. It was great that everyone dressed up in Australian or Japanese clothing. On Thursday we went to the zoo. Magu and Yuka were excited to see some Australian animals. After the zoo we went to the beach. Unfortunately, it was too cold for a swim! On Friday we had a good bye ceremony for the Japanese students and teachers. After school we took the girls to the Eureka Skydeck. They loved the view of the city and took lots of pictures. After that we went to a Japanese restaurant for dinner. On Saturday we went to St. Kilda to see all of the cake shops on Acland Street. Sunday we took the girls to the airport. I will stay in

touch with the girls and hope that one day I might get the opportunity to visit them in Japan.

Our family (the Berry family) had Kimihiko and Taiyu stay at our house. We thought it was a great experience to have. Kimihiko and Taiyu said sorry for every goal they got in air hockey. We thought that was hilarious. They were both very good at drawing and Kimihiko was attached to an afro wig he found lying around the house. On one of the last nights they both added up their receipts to see how much money they had spent. We thought it was funny because at night time Kimihiko and Taiyu would come in and scare us! We hope we can keep in contact with Kimihiko and Taiyu! Hamish and Cameron Berry

We were lucky enough to host Koade from Japan. Koade has a younger brother who is just like me. On the weekend we took Koade to the sky deck in the city. At the top there was a special glass room where we felt like we were standing on air. After the sky deck we went to Crown for dinner. At crown we were lucky enough to see a steam train go past. It was the first time Koade and I have seen a steam train. It was so much fun having Koade stay with us and hopefully one day I can visit her in Japan. By Zac Warmuz

Last week, we were lucky enough to be host family to Yumiko and Sakura our

Japanese students from Nanzan Elementary School in Tokyo. To get to know

one another better we played a game of Twister and jumped on the trampoline,

we had so much fun and laughed the whole time. On the Saturday, the girls

enjoyed seeing the brightly coloured bathing boxes at Brighton Beach and took

lots of photographs. Then, it was on to Luna Park for a thrilling ride on the

Pharaohs curse. Afterwards we drove to the city and Sakura bought a pair of

purple Australian Ugg boots. Then we went to shop for souvenirs for their family

and friends. It was such a fantastic experience for our whole family.

Hello parents, students and teachers, Hope everyone has been keeping warm during this wintery weather. Here at OSHC we have been celebrating everything winter and chilly and have been finding ways to keep warm. Last week we made cotton ball snow men, beautiful snow flakes and amazing stained glass windows.

Outside we kept warm playing lots of soccer, basketball and running track activities. The sport's club have been very interested in basketball lately and William has been fantastic at organising events for us. Along with the new term, we received an arts and craft order for our service and we are so excited about the arrival of our new cubby house! Matilda and Georgia have been overseeing the painting and its beginning to look incredible.

We also received lots of clay and have been doing some great modelling. Kieran, Montana & Sienna have all been incredibly excited and created some amazing pieces.

Along with all of these fun and exciting activities, we here at OSHC are growing our own herb garden this week. We are planting the seeds and creating a beautiful place to keep our plants nice and safe. Please feel free to come in and take a look at our incredible work!

I wish to inform all the new parents to complete the enrolment form when they come drop-off or pick-up their little ones at the service. Also an authorisation letter would be required if your child is being picked up by some one else apart from you (parents). Please feel free to contact the co-ordinator for any questions or queries.

Have a wonderful weekend, Jessica and Alysha
