AIR CHIEF MARSHALRace analysis After finishinga promising second to theuseful Gold Bubbles on hisdebut and then easily winninghis maiden by eight lengths attwo last year, Air ChiefMarshal looked to have theworld at his feet as the latestall-conquering Ballydoylejuvenile.

Things didn’t quite pan outlike that, though. On his nextstart he was beaten into thirdby Wrong Answer as the 9-10favourite in the Listed MarbleHill Stakes, and his maidenwin turned out to be his solevictory from ten starts at two.But runner-up spots in theGroup 1 Phoenix Stakes(where he was beaten just halfa length by Alfred Nobel) andin the Group 3 Go And GoRound Tower Stakes markedhim down as a high-classindividual, and the fact that hewithstood so many races andwas showing a smart level ofform from April right up tolate October demonstrated histoughness.

Air Chief Marshal had beenslower to come to hand thisyear, never threatening to winin any of his first three starts inthe Greenlands Stakes, the Bill& Avril Whitehead MemorialStakes and the valuable Scurryhandicap at the Curragh. Butthose three races came ongood to firm ground, and thehorse had shown whenwinning his maiden andfinishing second in the PhoenixStakes that he preferred softergoing.

A 15-length demolition of a7f four-runner conditions eventon the Dundalk Polytrack onJuly 12 restored his confidenceand five days later heconvincingly won the Group 3Minstrel Stakes at the Curraghon good to yielding.

It was an admirable effort towin the Minstrel Stakes, as hebeat seasoned campaignersDuff (one and three-quartersof a length in second) and

Arabian Gleam (neverdangerous in sixth); improvinghandicapper Dandy Boy (afurther one and a half lengthsbehind Duff in third); and thisseason’s Irish 2,000 Guineasrunner-up Free Judgement (avery disappointing seventh).

Air Chief Marshal’s trainerAidan O’Brien (who, strangelyfor a trainer who often mopsup Ireland’s top races, hadn’twon the Minstrel Stakes since2001, when King Charlemagnetriumphed) plans to step thecolt up to Group 2 companynext time out. With the rightconditions – 7f andrain-softened ground – AirChief Marshal could land adecent event.

Pedigree Danehill Dancer’sdays as a cheap source ofspeed are now a dim anddistant memory.

The son of Danehill washimself a dual Group 1 winnerat two and smart sprinter atthree, but was retired toCoolmore in 1998 at a fee ofjust Ir£4,000. Each of the sire’sfirst four northern-hemispherecrops were conceived at thatfee or Ir£3,500, but youwouldn’t have guessed fromtheir achievements: thosecrops yielded Group 1 winnerWhere Or When and high-classperformers Barbajuan, LadyDominatrix and MonsieurBond, while his early progenyfrom shuttling to Australiaincluded triple Group 1 winnerPrivate Steer and legendaryRoyal Ascot raider Choisir.

As Danehill Dancer’s feegradually increased, morehigh-class progeny came, including Anna Pavlova,Jeremy, Miss Beatrix andSpeciosa. His price soared from€40,000 in 2005 (his progenybred in that season includedGroup 1-winning juveniles andClassic winners Again andMastercraftsman) to €75,000in 2006, when his currentthree-year-olds wereconceived, and up to€115,000 in 2007 and 2008.For the last two years he has

BEHKABADRace analysis Behkabadstaked his claim for Prix del’Arc de Triomphe glory later inthe year with a smooth victoryin the “real French Derby”, theGrand Prix de Paris, lastWednesday.

The Jean-Claude Rouget-trained Aga Khan homebred –an unbeaten two-year-old whowas fourth last time out in thePrix du Jockey Club – racedhandily and made his challengefour furlongs from home, quickening really takingly andkeeping on to hold off the latechallenge of Jockey Clubrunner-up Planteur bythree-quarters of a length, withIrish Derby third Jan Vermeerfive lengths back in third.

Air Chief Marshal andJohnny Murtagh land their second race togetherin a week, the MinstrelStakes at the Curragh

Cape Cross onbeen in the exclusive club ofstallions with private fees.

Danehill Dancer hascapitalised on the betteropportunities. Besides AirChief Marshal, his otherthree-year-olds this seasoninclude Prix du Jockey Cluband Grand Prix de Parisrunner-up Planteur, CoronationStakes heroine Lillie Langtryand Oaks d’Italia winnerContredanse. This season’sjuveniles – the stallion’s firstcrop bred on a six-figure fee –include the outstanding fillyMemory and Sunday’sAnglesey Stakes runner-upSamuel Morse.

Air Chief Marshal’s dam, theWarning mare Hawala, wasone of the mares who visitedDanehill Dancer inexpensivelyearlier in the sire’s career, producing a runner whooutperformed the covering fee.Hawala visited DanehillDancer in 2002 when he stoodat Ir£9,000, and the result wasMisu Bond, who won theRipon Two-Year-Old Trophyand European Free Handicap, contributing to nearly£150,000 in earnings.

Hawala had been purchasedin foal to Celtic Swing at the2001 Goffs November salefrom the annual cull of the AgaKhan’s broodmares for justIr9,000gns by PheopotstownStud. She hails from the familyof the Aga Khan’s DerbyItaliano winner Houmayoun

and dual Listed scorerHasanka. The Celtic Swingcover became Slip Dance, afilly sold by Pheopotstown for€8,000 as a yearling whowould go on to win two Listedraces and be bought as abroodmare prospect for250,000gns.

In the season after SlipDance was foaled, Hawalaproduced Misu Bond and thenlater in the season – beforeSlip Dance and Misu Bond hadraced – Pheopotstown offeredthe mare in foal to Fath at theGoffs November sale. Shefailed to sell at €7,500 but twoyears later at the TattersallsDecember sale, after SlipDance had won her two Listedraces and Misu Bond hadlanded the valuable Riponrace, she was offered in foal toHawk Wing by Hyde Park Studand knocked down to BBAIreland for 280,000gns.

Barronstown Stud has bredHawala’s subsequent offspring.Air Chief Marshal (sold as ayearling for €320,000) wasthe result of the first matingthe mare’s new ownersselected. The successful recipehas been repeated, as she alsohas a two-year-old filly byDanehill Dancer named HunzaDancer (sold as a yearling for€80,000) and a yearling coltby the same sire, as well asbeing covered by him last year.

Further back, this is thesame family as the Aga Khan’soutstanding three-year-old fillySarafina, as Hawala’s seventhdam, the Poule d’Essai desPouliches winner Altissima, was a half-sister to Sarafina’sfourth dam.Martin Stevens

been won in previous years bysubsequent Arc winners Bago,Peintre Celebre and Rail Link.

Pedigree Behkabad becomesa third northern-hemisphereGroup 1 winner for his sireCape Cross, after legends OuijaBoard and Sea The Stars, andthe eighth overall after aproductive spell shuttling toNew Zealand yielded AbleOne, Gaze, Kindacross, MikkiStreet and Seachange.

The Aga Khan bredBehkabad out of the10-year-old Kris mare Behkara, trained in France by Alain deRoyer-Dupre to win the Group2 Prix Hubert de Chaudenay atthree and finish second toWesterner in the Group 1 PrixRoyal Oak in the followingseason.

Behkara’s dam Behera, adaughter of Mill Reef and ParkHill Stakes heroine Borushka, gained the honour of Europe’schampion three-year-old fillyin 1989 after winning the PrixSaint-Alary and finishing

Race analysis This year’sShadwell Stakes attracted afine line-up: King’s StandStakes runner-up Markabstarted as favourite, and lastyear’s winner High Standing, the consistent Doncaster Roverand Godolphin’s Australianacquisition Fravashi were inopposition.

The only Group 1 winner inthe field, last season’s HaydockSprint Cup hero Regal Paradewas sent off the 15-2 fourthfavourite. He was dropping outof the elite level for the firsttime since his finest hour lastSeptember, having finished lastin the Golden Shaheen atMeydan in March and 16thbehind Starspangledbanner inthe Golden Jubilee Stakes lastmonth.

Regal Parade’s class shonethrough, and the DavidNicholls-trained geldingovercame trouble in running atthe outset of the race to run onfrom the rear of the field andsail home three lengths clear ofthe runner-up High Standing.

He may, however, have beenthe beneficiary of Markabsetting an unsustainablyblistering pace and folding twofurlongs from home, and allthose who had tried to keep up

with the trailblazer - Fravashi,Angel’s Pursuit, BarneyMcGrew and Edge Closer –suffering a similar fate andcoming home in the last fivepositions. All roads will likelylead to a repeat bid in thisyear’s Sprint Cup.

Regal Parade has proved tobe a fantastic bargain forNicholls, who bought him as athree-year-old at the 2007Tattersalls Autumn horses intraining sale for 16,000gns.

The horse had originallybeen bought as a yearling for430,000gns by John Fergusonfor Sheikh Mohammed. Hewon his first three races forMark Johnston and achievedan official rating of 93 forwinning a handicap at theGuineas meeting atNewmarket. His form seemedto plateau for Johnston, though, and later that seasonhe found himself culled fromthe sheikh’s horses in training.

Pedigree Regal Parade helpedmake it a stellar weekend forCheveley Park Stud’s flagshipstallion Pivotal, who alsosupplied Rebecca Rolfe, winnerof the Listed Premio Citta diNapoli at Naples, andBuzzword, who became thesire’s fourth Classic winnerafter Falco, Halfway To Heavenand Sariska when landing the

runner-up to Carroll House inthe Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. She also features as the thirddam of 2,000 Guineasrunner-up Vital Equine and

Danehill Dancer, Pivotal hasascended to the upperechelons of the stallion ranksfrom relatively humblebeginnings. He retired to studin 1997 at a fee of £6,000,dropping to £5,000 in his thirdto fifth seasons but graduallyclimbed to a career high of

£85,000 in 2007 and 2008 onthe back of the exploits ofExcellent Art, Peeress, PivotalPoint and Somnus. His fee hasbeen £65,000 for the past twoseasons, a sign of the morefinancially-straitened times welive in, as his progeny havecontinued to excel.

In another echo of Air ChiefMarshal’s pedigree, RegalParade’s dam, Model Queen, was purchased out of a clear-out of broodmares from anestablished breeding operation– in her case, fromJuddmonte’s consignment as athree-year-old to the 2001Tattersalls December sale.

Model Queen’s form may nothave set the world alight – shewon one race from six startsand achieved a lifetime bestRacing Post Rating of 78 – buther pedigree did, as she is byKingmambo and out of Mofida,a runner-up in the Duke ofYork and Nell Gwyn Stakes

who was acquired byJuddmonte from RobertSangster in 1981, carrying afoal by The Minstrel.

Mofida proved to be anoutstanding addition to KhalidAbdullah’s broodmare band, with two standout producingdaughters among her progeny:Modena, dam of Elmaamul,Manifest and Reams of Verse, and ancestress of Midday andZacinto; and Zaizafon, the foalby The Minstrel that Mofidawas bought carrying, whoproduced the brilliant 2,000Guineas winner Zafonic andace sire Zamindar.

So it’s no wonder that JohnWarren was so keen to addModel Queen to the HighclereStud fold, and the agent wentto 92,000gns to secure her.Her first foal, Sister Sylvia, byFantastic Light, won a race inthe French provinces; RegalParade is her second; her third,Mount Helicon, by Montjeu, was useful on the Flat, finishing a close fourth in theGroup 2 Prix Noailles at threeand gaining black type with athird in a Listed race atDeauville; and her fifth, HotProspect, by Motivator, finished ninth in last month’sDerby.

Ironically, it is only ModelQueen’s fourth foal by DanehillDancer, Canyon Ranch, whohas so far failed to win a race. The mare also has a two-year-old filly by Encosta De Lagonamed Convention, purchasedby Hugo Lascelles as a yearlingfor 280,000gns, a yearling coltby Dansili and a filly foal byCape Cross.

The cross of Pivotal over amare by Kingmambo haspreviously come up trumpswith the high-class juvenilefilly Brazilian Bride and thefirst foal out of Kingmambo’sbrilliant daughter RussianRhythm, last month'sSandringham Handicap thirdSafina.Martin Stevens

Behkabad is Behkara’ssecond foal, after last year’sListed winner and Prix du

Jockey Club fourth Beheshtam,by Peintre Celebre. She has atwo-year-old colt by GreenDesert named Beynamar and, after being barren to Azamour

in 2009, was covered by thesame stallion last year. Whatan exciting broodmareprospect she is. Martin Stevens

THE stunning eight-length victoryof Snow Fairy in the Darley IrishOaks was the latest chapter in afantastic season for her owner-breeder Cristina Patino, who racesunder the Windflower OverseasHoldings banner.

“The improvement shown bySnow Fairy from two to threehas been amazing,” said BBAIreland’s Patrick Cooper, wholooks after the Windflower blood-stock interests. “The initial planwas to take in the German 1,000Guineas, but she had a slight set-back so went instead for the Lupeat Goodwood over 1m 4f.”

Having won easily at Good-wood the daughter of Intikhab wassupplemented for the Oaks. “Noone expected her to win as wellas she did at Goodwood, so on theback of that we decided to giveher a crack at the Oaks.

“We contacted Ryan Moore, who had done his homework andbeen impressed with the filly andwas happy to take the ride, whichwas a huge bonus,” Cooper added.

“Coming to the Curragh, EdDunlop believed the filly had improved from the Epsom run, which seems to have been thecase. The next obvious target forher would be the Yorkshire Oakswith a possible tilt at the Prix del’Opera at Longchamp, althoughplans remain fluid.”

While the emergence of SnowFairy has been something of asurprise to connections, highhopes have long been held fortheir Craven Stakes-winning coltElusive Pimpernel, who suffered

a setback after running fifth in the2,000 Guineas behind Makfi. “Heis still on the easy list and noth-ing is set in stone for him for therest of the season,” Cooper said.

The Elusive Quality colt is thesecond foal out of the Sadler’sWells mare Cara Fantasy, whowas twice successful in minorcompany over 1m 4f.

“This is very much a mile-and-a-half-family. We decided to inject a little bit more speed intothe mare,” Cooper said.

This process started when Cara’sFantasy was sent to visit Giant’sCauseway, after receiving encour-aging reports on the stallion’sprogeny from another Windflowertrainer, John Dunlop, who sent out

QUICK QUESTIONSJohn O’Connor , ITBA president andchairman of the ITBAveterinary committee

The Irish ThoroughbredBreeders Associationhosts a nationalsymposium, startingtoday, on bio-security –what does this mean? Inlayman’s terms, bio-security isabout trying to protect thehealth status of individualfarms and the national herd.

How can the absence ofbio-security impact on thehorse owner or breeder?Due to changes in transportpractices and health legislationwithin the EU, Ireland is nowat greater risk of diseases towhich Irish horses were neverpreviously exposed. Recent

examples of this include theincursion of Equine ViralArteritis and Equine InfectiousAnaemia (Swamp Fever).

What are the implicationsfor the industry ifbio-security measures arebreached? The recentexamples of EIA and EVAresulted in severe hardship andconsiderable financial loss forthe premises which wereaffected. Close co-operationbetween the industry, the IrishEquine Centre and Departmentof Agriculture, and theapplication of bio-securitymeasures meant that thesediseases were controlled andquickly eliminated

Sinead Hyland, the YITBA chair-person, said: “The interest in theapprenticeship scheme has beenfantastic and we are looking

forward to starting the interviewsnext week, with the announcementof our lucky two apprentices being made in August.

“I would like to sincerely thankall the employers who have offeredtheir services to the YITBA’s apprenticeship scheme.”

Despite the disease havingbeen eradicated in thethoroughbred populationthere, isolated cases weredetected in non-thoroughbredhorses. “We were looking to cross CaraFantasy’s Sadler’s Wells bloodwith Mr Prospector-line stallions,so she stayed in America andvisited Elusive Quality in 2006 andproduced Elusive Pimpernel,”Cooper added. “She visited Mr

Greeley the following year, before returning to Ireland. Shenow has a yearling filly by Big BadBob.”

While Snow Fairy and ElusivePimpernel have garnered mostof the headlines, there are numerous other horses in Patinocolours performing at a high level. The Ger Lyons-trained Rain

Delayed was successful in a 6flisted race at Cork earlier thisseason and his stablemate BergBahn ran an excellent third inthe UAE 1,000 Guineas at Mey-dan.

“Berg Bahn was given a properbreak after running so well inDubai. We decided to get a runinto her at Ascot as her owner isbased in London. She came on forthat to win the Group 3 Browns-town Stakes at Fairyhouse lastmonth and is definitely a filly onthe upgrade,” said Cooper.

The three-year-old is a truehome-bred horse, being a productof Big Bad Bob and the Baratheamare Ski For Me. Both sire anddam were bred by and raced inthe yellow and red silks of Wind-flower Overseas Holdings. BigBad Bob, a son of Bob Back, stands at Islanmore Stud, CountyLimerick and has been well supported by a number of Wind-flower mares, all of which are insitu at the stud.

“Big Bad Bob has done remark-ably well in his stud career so farand has 80 per cent winners to runners. He definitely upgradeshis mares. There are ten in train-ing for Mrs Patino and eight havewon, one has been placed andone has yet to run, which reallyshows his worth as a stallion,”said Cooper.

“He has covered about 25 maresthis year for breeders keen tobreed a racehorse first and fore-most. There are a couple oftwo-year-olds by him called BoomTo Bust and Back Burner thatcould be worth keeping an eye onfor later in the year.”

Another Maye product to win atTipperary was the Montjeu

gelding GlenstalAbbey, who nowraces in thecolours of JP

McManus. He was sold as a foal byMaye for €90,000 at Goffs andraced once for trainer Aidan O’Brienon the Flat before being trans-ferred to Charlie Swan.

With McManus, O’Brien andSwan all involved in the Glen-stal Abbey story it is interestingthat Maye’s third winner of the day,Mon Champion, in the Thalgo

Ladies Derby at the Curragh, should be re lated to the greatIstabraq. Mon Champion

is out of theNashwan mare
