He seems pleased with the results so far. “We had a great first outing, just a lot of positive responses,” Wells said. “We hope to keep that positive momentum going because once that train gets going it just needs a little maintenance along the way.” Wells has been riding that positive momentum for a long time. Taylon Sharer / THE FLARE

What is your major and why did you choose it? ... My major is Graphic Design. I chose graphic design because I love art and design, it is something I enjoy doing. What made you decide to go

to KC? ... I wanted an associate’s graphic design degree, but I didn’t want to go to a big four year university. I love living at home, but I wanted a college that offered housing so I could get to experience the “dorm life,” and most importantly I wanted a college that was affordable. What are some of your hobbies?

... Playing piano, singing, I’ve always been into music. I love shopping, hanging with friends, sketching and playing basketball. What are you looking forward

to most this semester? ... I am looking forward to meeting new people and doing well in my classes. What/who inspires you? ... My

little sister, Hannah. How many places have you

lived? ... I’ve lived in five different towns in Texas (Archer City, Bellevue, Bowie, Saint Jo, Kilgore), Hot Springs, Ark., and Glascow, Scotland...about 15 different houses. If you could meet anyone in

the world, who would it be? ... A Holocaust survivor or Marilyn MonroeIf you won the lottery, what

would you do with your money? ... Oh, I would get myself a new car, buy a house, build a studio, then vacation to Greece. Do I have any money left? Where do you see yourself in

five years? ... In five years I’ll be 24. I would like to have a steady career, and possibly be married. At some point, I would like to have my own photography/ design studio. What did you do for your last

birthday? ... Every year is the same celebration. Dallas for a day of shopping, P.F. Chang’s, and The Cheesecake factory for birthday cake.

RealTALK is an on-campus student ministry that takes real cultural issues like poverty, racism, sexuality and pride to see what students have to say about them. Students are welcome to share their beliefs and compare them to what the Bible says, said Steven Vowell, campus director.

Vowell said realTALK has been part of KC for three years and was started by Life Challenge, a college ministry group from New Covenant Church in Longview. RealTALK allows students to express their opinions without having to hold back their beliefs.

RealTALK meets 3-4 p.m. every Tuesday at the Devall Student Center. Other events are planned throughout out

the year, like barbecue outings and kickball tournaments. Racism was the topic on Tuesday, Sept. 20.

“We had 110 students show up and didn’t have a lot a controversy with the topic. Everyone seemed to enjoy it and this by far was my favorite topic of the year,” Vowell said.

The Destination Conference is scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 7-8 at New Covenant Church in Longview. The conference is free and it’s designed to help college students see their future and help them get there.

“We want to reach, train and network students,” Vowell said. His mission is to reach out to every student through realTALK and get students to reflect the glory of God and be passionately in love with Jesus.

Theatre students have been work-ing around the clock to prepare for their upcoming play, “Char-

ley’s Aunt.” The play is set to premiere Tuesday, Oct. 4 and run through Oct. 8, nightly at 7:30 p.m. in the Van Cliburn Auditorium with a matinee Sunday, Oct. 9, 2:30 p.m.

Director Kathy Barber has directed this play three times. She said each time it has become a little more challenging. The set for this year’s play has been difficult due to the large size of the scenes.

“Charley’s Aunt” has “three different scenes that have to be built, painted and designed so they can be quickly removed,” said Mike Atkins, technical director. “Flats have to be tied together or battened and then they will fly out.”

A “fly out” is common in theatre, but this set is not easy because it has large side walls that may not fit behind the stage.

Furniture changes will be made by four butlers. The curtain will not close; every change the butlers make, the audience will see.

Tickets are $6 for adults, $5 for students and $4 with a KC ID. Children under the age of 6 will not be admitted into the theatre.

For ticket reservations, call Barber at 903-983-8126

The KC Police Department is not just a place that gives out tickets when people park in the wrong place. The police offer other services as well if students are in the habit of locking their keys in the car or need someone to jump-start their car, they can call the KCPD.

KCPD will also escort students to their car if it is dark outside or if they do not want to walk alone.

Parking stickers are available in the KCPD office located beside the Devall Student Center. Students must be prepared to give the make, model, vehicle color and license plate information.

“The first week of amnesty period is over and we have begun parking enforcement in earnest,” Pessink said.

Due to the number of people who use someone else’s parking flier to illegally park in disabled/handicap spaces, all students are required to bring their placard or registration in to be verified and those students will be issued a handicapped-endorsed parking permit.

An unauthorized placard was confiscated from a student on Aug. 29, and she was cited through the municipal court; the maximum fine is $1,500 and 50 hours of community service.

“I realize that this is a pet peeve of a lot of people and I appreciate the calls,”Pessink said.

“I am not sure everyone knows that if there is a vehicle parked in disabled parking with DV as part of their license number this is for a disabled vet and they can park in these spots.”

Pessink has started a cadet program with work study students. You may see them in the parking areas wearing a traffic vest.

These students will help us work with parking enforcement as well as courtesy calls for jump starts and lock outs,” Pessink said.

The KCPD is also using Facebook as a communication tool for emergencies, weather information and general things.
