Fernanda Awaits a Critical TransplantBy Robin Hindery Enan

In late March, Fernanda marked off two milestones. The first was a happy one, as the outgoing teen who loves music,

drawing and experimenting with make-up celebrated her 14th birthday. The second was more sobering, as she passed the one-year anniversary since joining the waitlist for a double lung transplant.

Fernanda suffers from cystic fibrosis, a chronic, life-threatening disorder that damages the lungs and digestive system. The condition was diagnosed when she was just 14 months old, and since that time her life has been filled with hospital visits, medications and other challenges that have placed tremendous strain on both her and her family.

Last spring, when it became clear her lungs were giving out, her mother Mayra moved with her from their home in San Diego to Mountain View so that she could join the transplant list at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. Fernanda’s 10-year-old sister and 6-year-old brother followed in September,

while their dad continues to work in San Diego in order to maintain their health insurance.

“She does four breathing treatments per day, and each one takes an hour and a half,” Mayra explains of her daughter’s taxing daily regimen. “She takes over 20 medications in the morning and at night, and every time she eats she has to take enzymes for her pancreas. She also wears oxygen 24/7, as well as a mask whenever she’s outside in public.”

Keeping track of Fernanda’s medical care is a full-time job for mom, who tries to balance Fernanda’s care with that of her other two children. In addition, mom helps Fernanda, who is home-schooled due to her compromised immune system, from falling too far behind on her studies. Having support to help her with all that is going on is part of the reason Mayra describes There With Care as a huge blessing in the family’s life here.

Mayra heard about There With Care through a hospital social worker a few weeks after moving to the area. Since then, the family has been receiving support, delivered by their volunteer Christy that includes grocery deliveries, clothing for their family, cleaning supplies to help keep her safe due to low immune system, books, and gift cards to purchase daily necessities. from our executive director

Dear There With Care Community,

Countless acts of generosity have entered through the doors of There With Care with the heartfelt intent of providing care to a family facing critical illness. We are grateful to our entire community for all they do to ease the stresses for the families we serve.

Last year we provided support to more than 200 families during medical treatment at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital. Our community of volunteers and supporters has grown, and together they have helped the families during a fragile time in their lives. This year, we are in our fifth year of care, and will serve even more.

No two days are the same for each family as they navigate through the illness of their child. Our focus at There With Care is to remain flexible to each family’s needs, and with your help, this has been possible.

Thank you for joining us in our growing care for families and for your continued support of our work.

With gratitude,

Sara AlexanderExecutive Director, Bay Area Chapter

Our community has helped nearly 600 families since 2011, with a critically ill child. In that time, we have provided families with more than 130,000 pounds of food, delivered more than 75,000 diapers, and so much more. We are thankful that in addition to the services we provide, we also are able to provide care.

On my office bulletin board I see photos of beautiful children and dedicated volunteers, notes and cards from families and social workers, colorful drawings, and sadly, memorial programs for some of the children who have passed. All of this says how meaningful the care is to the families.

While one family received groceries and diapers, they also had regular visits and calls from our team and from caring volunteers. Another family received gas cards to help get their child back and forth to the hospital, while they also had a dedicated volunteer who would visit with mom and read to the patient’s siblings to help the family pass the long days away from their home.

I am grateful to be a part of this supportive community and I’m honored to join you in caring for families in the future.

With gratitude, Sheri

cataleya’s storyAs Told By Her Mom

When I was four months pregnant, I learned of my daughter’s life-threatening heart condition. This news was a shock to my family as we thought baby Cataleya would die at

birth. Fortunately, we were referred to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital where Cataleya, now two years old, is still receiving treatment and waiting for her heart transplant.

When Cataleya was born, we were all scared. Cataleya’s brother and sister were worried that she would not survive, and I saw my two children taking extra care of Cataleya and me. Through dealing with her medical needs, Cataleya has in her special way brought our family closer together.

When I was referred to There With Care, our family was living in a shelter. I was not able to work since I had to be next to Cataleya,

and her father was working various jobs trying to make ends meet. I felt very lonely, and I didn’t know where to turn. There With Care was a source of light in the darkness of my life. I had great pain in my heart, and I couldn’t believe the situation we were in and that I could lose my baby. What keeps me from crying is not wanting Cataleya to see the sadness in life, so I try to be happy and have her see me happy.

The first time I came to There With Care’s warehouse, I received a hug when I entered. That is how they care. They have helped me with diapers, groceries, a pack and play for Cataleya to sleep in, gas cards, and beds for when we moved into a home.

What I appreciate about There With Care is that it is a place where people help people. They understand what I am going through, and I feel protected and safe knowing that I can count on material and moral support. It is a blessing and I am grateful.

being there for cameronBy Robin Hindery Enan

When you’re living out of a suitcase in a hospital more than 100 miles from home, and watching your 6-month-old baby fight for his life, you learn that relentless optimism is a crucial coping skill.

For Nicola Harris, that almost unimaginable scenario is a daily reality. While the family lives in Sacramento, she has spent most of the past year at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital with her child, Cameron, who suffers from hypo plastic left heart syndrome — a heart whose left side is critically underdeveloped.

The Harris’ were first connected to There With Care soon after Cameron’s July 2015 birth, referred by their hospital social worker. At two days old, Cameron

underwent his first emergency heart surgery. Finally released two months later, he spent less than three weeks at home before the complications of his condition brought him and his mom back to the hospital.

Nicola calls There With Care’s regular deliveries of groceries and diapers “a great blessing,” and says that the gas cards “make our weekend family visits possible.”

Earlier this year, Cameron underwent his second major surgery. In addition to an eventual heart and lung transplant, he has at least one more surgery on the horizon by the time he turns three years old. “He’s a fighter,” says his mom. “He teaches me what strength really is, what patience means.”

Despite the stress and uncertainties she faces, Nicola explains, “There With Care makes it possible for us to be here and be comfortable. Overall, the experience has been amazing, so loving. When I deal with There With Care, it really feels like my son is the only one they’re dealing with. That makes you feel so special as a parent. I can focus on being here for Cameron.”

have created a really good bond,” Mayra says of Christy. “Every time the kids know she’s going to come, they get excited.” The holidays were particularly special, she recalls, thanks to holiday gifts delivered for the children and the gift of a Thanksgiving dinner. Most recently, Mayra and Christy worked together gathering personalized cards to present to Fernanda on her birthday. “This is the second birthday she’ll be spending here,” Mayra said, “and it’s hard for her because she doesn’t go out, doesn’t go to school. She can’t even participate in the programs at the hospital because of her immune system. She’s really positive, but she gets frustrated and mad sometimes and she really misses everyone back in San Diego.”

Equally frustrating is not knowing when her transplant will come through. In early March, the family received news that an organ

was available and that Fernanda was a match and was second in line to receive it. In the end, the first person on the list ended up being a match as well, and the waiting began again. Mayra shared, “I spend a lot of my time taking Fernanda to appointments and going to the pharmacy, and when my other kids get home from school, I’m taking care of them and Fernanda starts her home-schooling,” she explained. So it’s like the whole day is planned. I have no time to go to the store to get the things I need.”

“In San Diego, we had relatives and friends close by, but we never had any help like this,” she continues. “We have no one over here, but There With Care has been such a big help.” Fernanada and Her Family

honoring our volunteers

Volunteers are the heart and soul of the work we do each day. They inspire us all through their generosity of time and care. We could not be there for families without their gifts.

With 2016 in full swing, we reflect on the many ways volunteers have made an incredible impact at There With Care of the Bay Area. Looking back, last year was a big year for us in the volunteer department. Volunteers ran three kitchens creating over 800 ready to eat entrees for families and 150 volunteers joined our team. We also

welcomed new writers, new volunteer trainers, photographers, social media experts, food bank shoppers, and many oth-ers who chose to share their areas of expertise with us, our families, and our community.

Nearly 30 employee and youth groups came to our warehouse for service days, with many more groups donating needed items for families. Over 100 volunteers came together to support our signature fundraiser and many more represented There With Care at local community events. With over 670 trained volunteers and 5,000 hours of service last year, the volunteers continue to transform our commu-nity and the families we serve, through gifts of care and time. This year, with the help of volunteers, we are on track to provide even more service for the families we serve.

We appreciate all our volunteers and thank them for their generosity. Walking through our Menlo Park warehouse and seeing our shelves fully stocked and organized with diapers, baby care bags, snack bags, and cleaning kits; I am grateful for their service and compassion. There is a place for everyone to help a family facing a medical crisis. From purchasing Amazon wish list items to plac-

ing a donation collection barrel at your child’s school, organizing a scout troop’s service day at our warehouse, asking your employer how they can partner with There With Care, or making Easy Meal Care bags during a book club, there truly is always a way to make a difference and ease the stresses for a family.

Looking ahead, we are hopeful the community will continue to support our mission and keep us on the path of serving more families with the resources needed. Thank you to our volunteers for their service, donations, and partnerships. To-gether, we are truly a community that is There With Care.

there with care volunteer spotlight:kathryn and zack dwyer

Kathryn and Zack Dwyer have two recommendations for anyone new to volunteering—first, find an organization you like; and second, step outside your comfort zone. The mom/son team had the opportunity to do both when they began volunteering at There With Care last summer as part of Crystal Springs’ Young Men’s Service League. Kathryn

is an active volunteer and mom to three and Zack, 16, is a busy sophomore at Hillsdale High School.

The Dwyers initially chose to volunteer at There With Care because they have a young terminally ill relative in Michigan. As they began making deliveries they realized it was personally rewarding to do a small thing to improve someone’s day. “Seeing the smiles when you make a delivery warms your heart,” says Zack. “It’s an enjoyable experience. And I get to bond with my mom.”

Since they often are busy with their individual interests, Kathryn and Zack value the one-on-one time together, which is full of good discussions. “It brings up life conversations because of the situations that come up when you’re volunteering,” Kathryn mentions.

“In the beginning it was nerve-racking for me,” Zack says. “I had to call the contact person to notify them that we were bringing a delivery. I didn’t want to at first, but it’s been a great life skill to develop. It’s interesting to talk with people. After awhile it’s easier.” According to Kathryn, “I’ve definitely seen Zack grow through this experience. He was initially scared to call up people he didn’t know, but he has really stepped out of his comfort zone.”

The Dwyers have found volunteering for There With Care to be full of many special moments. “The direct interaction with families is one of the best parts of There With Care,” Zack says. “You can actually see the change you are making in someone’s life.”

What would they say to encourage other moms and sons to volunteer? “Find something you want to do. There With Care is a great organization. When we go to volunteer, I never have to tell Zack it’s time to go—he’s always excited to go!” Kathryn suggests. Zack adds, “Volunteering is something you can do for the rest of your life. Don’t be worried about stepping out of your comfort zone. You are helping someone who really appreciates it.”
