Have you asked your child about his or her goals?

GOALS AND GROWING

CHILDREN WHO SET GOALS ARE MOST LIKELY TO MAKE ACADEMIC GAINS

Based on the meta-research of John Hattie, Brian Tracy, Robert Marzano and other excellent authors, we have learned that people who make goals and action steps are most likely to achieve at greater heights than those who do not.

In each classroom of our building, children are setting goals with their teachers. Children are looking at their accomplishments and setting action steps to improve their performance for the next month. Your children should be able to tell you what their goals are and what they are going to do to accomplish that goal. We would like you to support your child by asking about those goals and helping them to take the steps to accomplishing those goals. Some will need to read an extra few minutes. Some will need to learn a few new multiplication facts or site words. Regardless, we want to focus on the GROWTH and reaching for goals. You will be impressed with all your children can do!

Have you set goals for yourself ? Maybe you should. It would be a great example for your kids.

See you at school (or on Instagram)! Mr. Vetter

First Grade News!!!!!

First  grade  will  be  busy  in  the  month  of  November  learning  about  Objects  in  The  Sky  and  Earth’s  Resources for our Science curriculum. We will discuss gravity, the stars, the moon, the sun and our planet with its many resources. We will also learn how magnifiers work.

In Social Studies, we will learn about history and how it tells the story of people and events of other times and places. We will identify celebrations and national holidays and will compare life now with life in the past.

In Math, we have learned addition strategies such as doubles, doubles plus and minus one, and make a ten. Daily practice on Reflex Math is strongly encouraged to increase math fact skills. We will now learn about subtraction strategies and the relationship between addition and subtraction.

First graders need to read, read, read every day for at least thirty minutes! Reading to and reading with your child is very important. Remember to check for understanding by asking your child to retell the important parts of the story. In addition ask your child to find text evidence to support the main idea and key details of the story. As we work together at home and at school, we are creating a love for reading which will last for a lifetime.

2nd Grade News !!!

The air is cooler, the holidays are near, and our 2nd graders are learning so very much here.

Addition and subtraction facts should be mastered and their math fluency should be getting faster.

As we transition to Informational writing, it’s important to provide details and facts.

Explaining a topic to the audience should be done to the max!

Election time is approaching very soon-

The students are learning about the process and the candidates running also!

Please review with your child the rules of grammar…forgetting end marks and capital letters sure does matter!

As November comes, so do the celebrations-

Our gratitude increases and so do the teachers’ expectations.

Please read with your child and ask lots of questions.

Discuss the main idea, the moral, or even have discussion sessions.

Happy Thanksgiving!!! we are so grateful for you all-

May we all join together and relish the beautiful Fall!!

Multiplication Madness All of our third grade classes have started mastering their times tables. It is important that each third grader masters ALL of their multiplication tables. Students can practice their times tables by using multiplication cards, online multiplication games, quizzing with family or friends, skip counting and many other ways. Please make sure to continue practicing at home and using www.reflexmath.com.

International Dot Day This past September, third grade celebrated International Dot Day. We spoke about how we each want to leave a positive dot on our world. We sang songs, created art, told stories, etc. Our kids had a blast working with other teachers and reflecting on the kind of adults they each want to be. How do you make a difference in this world? What dot will you leave?

Can my child skip their 20 minutes of reading each day? LET’S FIGURE IT OUT---MATHEMATICALLY

Student A reads 20 minutes five nights every week; Student B reads only 4 minutes a night.......or not at all

Step 1: Multiply minutes a night X 5 times each week. Student A reads 20 minutes X 5 times each week = 100 mins./week

Student B reads 4 minutes X 5 times a week = 20 minutesStep 2: Multiply a week X 4 weeks each month.

Student A reads 400 minutes a month. Student B reads 80 minutes a month.

Step 3: Multiply minutes a month X 9 months/school year. Student A reads 3,600 minutes a school year. Student B reads 720 minutes a school year.

Student A practices reading the equivalent of ten whole school days a year. Student B gets the equivalent of only two school days of reading practice.

By the end of 6th grade, if Student A and Student B maintain these same reading habits , Student A will have read the equivalent of 60 whole school days.Student B will have read the equivalent of only 12 school days.

One would expect the gap of information retained will have widened considerably and so, undoubtedly, will school performance.

How do you think Student B will feel about himself/herself as a student?

5th Grade News

Fifth grade is in the groove. Students have been busy learning about Matter. They have been doing experiments with bubbles, Obleck, and other substances to learn about the properties of matter. In math, they have been practicing division of whole numbers and are now working on operations with decimals. All of the 5th grade is going to participate in SECME, which is a hands-on science program. There will be a fun event for the community on Oct. 29th at FAU Boca campus celebrating Carl Sagan Day. All students are invited to learn about bottle rockets and other types of flight. A flyer will come home to announce this event and provide details.

Ever wonder if there is any science your can do at home? Here are two ideas. Quizlet is a great place to practice vocabulary, just search bbofill and select the appropriate grade and unit. Currently all grades are working on matter and how matter can change. Studyjams has great videos that teach different concepts. Review ones we are working on in class.

K We are learning about

matter! We are measuring matter with

different tools.

1st We are learning about

matter! Matter has different properties that

we observe with our senses.

2nd We are learning about matter! All matter has mass and volume. We are using tools to show how solids keep their

shape and liquids keep their volume.

3rd We tested if heavier or lighter objects fall faster

(they fall at the same speed). We are now using

beakers, graduated cylinders and measuring cups to explore volume.

4th We tested how quickly

ice melted on conductors and

insulators. Students also measured the mass and volumes of solids

and liquids.

5th How many drops of water fit on a penny? Ask your

5th grader about the polar water molecule,

hydrogen bonds and the effects of a surfactant on

surface tension!

!

I’ve started to use the Remind 101 app

If you would like to receive a text message about Quizlet units the students were asked to work on -

text @msbscie to the number 81010you will receive a welcome text from Remind.

If anyone has trouble with 81010, they can try texting @msbscie to (954) 883-9419.

Floranada Garden Club Exciting things are happening in the garden this year! Many

thanks to our PTA Garden Chair, Andrea Krick, who is coordinating volunteers and donations. Thanks to increased

involvement our small club has grown from 30 members to 40! Our main focus has been the Youth Flower Show competition each

spring, but we’ve accomplished so much more. We originally transformed a simple patch of garden into a butterfly garden that is beautiful to behold and attracts so much wildlife! This year we are

hoping to plant edibles. Master growers please be sure to share your knowledge and help our garden grow.

Floranada Elementary’s Advanced Arts and Blockheads Lego Club will be starting up the week of Oct. 17th. I appreciate all those interested in joining these enrichment clubs and completing the applications. Acceptance letters have been

sent home!

The Blockheads is a Lego Club that invites students in grades 3-5, to Connect, Collaborate, and Create! Students are presented with challenging problems that ask them to design and engineer a solution using only Lego blocks. These are hands-on, cross-curricular activities that boost 21st-century skills in a fun and creative way!

The Advanced Arts Club is open to students in grades 3-5 and is dedicated to providing additional art lessons, guided support and creative time to students who have a great interest in the arts. Larger projects and new mediums are introduced to challenge budding young artists. The culminating event for the Advanced Art Club is our school's Cultural Night, where we celebrate our students’ talents.
