We needed to beatthe VFW team twice to bechampions, otherwise there
would havebeen a tie,Brouwer said.

The team has beenplaying together for years,
Toncar said. Most of themgrew up in Des Moines.
I can remember some ofus playing together since wewere in 3rd grade, Brouwersaid. Our team chemistry iswhy we play so well, we dontreally practice, we just showup and go.
Slow-pitch softball is
slightly different from baseballbecause pitching is all done
by throwing underhand, andthere is an extra fielder. Onenational tournament rule,Toncar said, is there are nohome runs allowed.
Before the nationaltournament began the teamwas notified that they would
need matching hats. The teamwent to Scheels and ended up
buying pink hats.Toncar said, My fondest
memory of the tournament wascatching the game-winningball. Banners, flags, jackets, plaques, and a trophy were allawarded to the team and theirsponsors.
