Parish YouthProject
Decca Riondino has been our Youth Workerfor three years. He has just successfullycompleted his university course and will beleaving Stilton at the end of August. Heintends to go out with a bang - he isorganising a week of activities for youngpeople aged 11 to 17, August 3rd to 7th, andis asking, through SCAN, for adult help. (Seep17)
The churches are getting together to thankhim at a service at Haddon; 6pm on July25th. His successor, Esther Connolly, isalready known to many of our young people.
Thank YouThe temporary closure of Stilton Post Officehas caused great concern, not only becausewe need its services, but more especiallybecause it means the loss of Gill King. Forover 20 years has been much more than aPostmistress, she has been a friend and ahelper to many of us, and we will miss her.
WelcomeThe Talbot is now being managed by Davidand Inara. We wish them every success withtheir venture.
Another DepartureKylie Garlick, who runs the Riverfordorganic box scheme, has decided to give upthe business. Fortunately, the business willremain run by Riverford and so deliverieswill continue as usual. Kylie and Peter havemade a big impression in the time they havebeen "feeding us" and we are glad they willstill be running the farmers’ and craft marketsat Sacrewell.

Power tothe People!
June’s AgendaIT’S ALL ABOUT DEVELOPMENT...
Playing FieldStilton United Football Club has presenteda detailed plan for further development ofthe field; this includes a steel framedbuilding. The Parish Council would have toprovide the concrete base and services.
There is concern that the surface of the fieldis not suitable for regular match play andthat a large part of the field would not beavailable for general use. Also, in the presentclimate, grants will not be easy to find. Thefirst thing is to meet with the planners to findout what would be acceptable on this site.At the same time, grants will be forthcomingonly if the wishes of the community areclearly expressed. This is why it is importantthat a good number of people fill in thequestionnaire included in this issue of SCAN.
HAVE YOUR SAYIn SCAN this month and next, and on thevillage website www.stilton.org, you willfind a questionnaire asking what you wouldlike to see on the field over the next fewyears. There is also space to say if you don'twant any further development. Childrenunder 18 will be given a questionnaire intheir organizations and groups and in StiltonSchool. All village organizations will beasked to give their collective views.
PUBLIC CONSULTATIONESSENTIAL
At present grants are very hard to find; wewill not be considered unless we can prove
we have support from all age groups, allinterest groups and a wide range of residents. This is why we urge you to fill in and returnthe enclosed questionnaire. All developmentof the field has to be paid for, so to give yousome idea of what the field costs Stilton, here are the figures:
CAPITAL EXPENDITURE
Still to come: Completion of lighting/electricity
supply Water supply and sewerage
REGULAR EXPENDITUREAs well as the above, Stilton Parish Councilpays for insurance, ground maintenance, hedge cutting, repairs and litter picking outof its annual budget. If each household inStilton paid £1 per year extra this would raisearound £1000, but it is likely that thegovernment will not allow any increases inthe next year or so.
SUFC has asked SCAN to print its proposalto the Parish Council so that readers will bebetter informed to express their views. Seep9
Purchase of field (2004) £26,737Fencing & gates £11,422Field entrance £8,850Field drainage £14,591Lighting (so far) £6,000Cycle racks, bins & signs £3,019

WATCH THE CHAMPIONSAT WORK
Our local flying centre, Flying ClubConington, is once again playing host to
the Mazda British National AerobaticChampionships and we’re all invitedto come and watch for FREE!
Ever since the Club began to publicisethe event locally, its popularity hasincreased as one of the best spectatorevents in the area - certainly the bestfree show you’re likely to go to!
The event takes place between Thursday - Saturday 5th-7thAugust, weather permitting, and the Club invites localresidents to come and watch the action. There is limitedfree parking on the airfield and no charge for admission.
You can find out more about the Club at www.flying-club-conington.co.uk or, if you’re interested in learning to fly,why not call them on (01487) 834161? One of SCAN’s regularreaders had a trial flight for a birthday present and still hasn’tstopped talking about it!
Competitive-level aerobatics, of course, is altogetherdifferent from a weekend trundle round the sky in aCessna. The pilots taking part in this event will be of
Standard and Intermediate levels, no doubt all trying toraise their game to reach Advanced and Unlimited levels.
It’s a physically and mentally demanding sport whichrequires only the tiniest lapse in concentration to put you out
of contention. Pilots must fly various sequences of precisemanoeuvres within a defined ‘box’ in the sky right in front of
a panel of judges who will penalise them for straying outside thebox, any lack of precision or, even worse, getting the sequence
wrong. It’s like 3D figure-skating with horsepower!

The Winners’Podium!
On CampaignSUFC IS PLANNING AHEAD
The 09/10 season has barely passed andpreparations are already being made for the10/11 campaign.SUFC will begin pre-season training onTuesday 13th July from 7 - 8:30 pm and willcontinue every Tuesday and Thursdaythroughout the summer. Unfortunately, thesesessions will be taking place at the Yaxleyrecreation field due to the poor state of thesurface at the Stilton community field.Anyone who is 16 or over is encouraged tocome along and get involved; you will getfit and hopefully enjoy it at the same time.Keeping a local village football club afloatin the UK today is no easy task. The job isparticularly difficult if your club is forced torent pitches every week as well as pay thegrowing list of other fees. As a result, it costsSUFC £1000 each season before a ball iskicked, and in the region of £100 per weekto keep the club going. Over the comingmonths, fundraising events will be takingplace so keep an eye out for them.SUFC is a real community club; last seasonaround 30 players were signed on who wereeither from Stilton or who have direct familyconnections with the village. Thiscommunity spirit in our club is a majorreason why SUFC members and supporters(of which there are many) have been workingso hard over the last few years to securesuitable facilities in Stilton. Facilities inStilton would only enhance this spirit andhopefully encourage more local youngstersto participate and build a sense of pride in
their village. A number of initiatives andattempts have failed for various reasonsrecently, but another proposal has now beenput forward by SUFC.Obviously SUFC can only go so far with anyproposal before help is required from theParish Council. SUFC is motivated anddetermined to succeed with the long-termgoal of securing the necessary facilitieswithin the village boundary. We only hopethat the Parish Council have the samedetermination. Opposite is a letter written tothe Parish Council on April 6th from SUFCVice Chairman Glen Woolner, whichexplains in more detail the opportunity sittingat Stilton's door. There’s more about this proposal atwww.Facebook.com on the group page'Stilton sports field for the future'.SCAN says: When you’ve read Mr Woolner’sproposal to the Parish Council, and thecomments by the Council on p4, please takethe time to complete and return the enclosedquestionnaire. It’s YOUR playing field, largely paid for with your money, so it’simportant that you help decide how it is tobe used for the benefit of the entire village. And you might win a free restaurant meal!

Dear Parish CouncilRecently I have received a very interestingoffer relating to the possibility of erecting asports pavilion on our village recreationalfield. Obviously you will make up your ownminds but I believe that this is one of themost generous proposals that I have heardfor a long time.
The sponsor of the proposal is Mr TonyDarke, the managing director of Darke TechLtd., who has workshops just outside thevillage.
Mr Darke has suggested that he may beprepared to supply and erect a steelstructured, prefabricated buildingspecifically designed to meet therequirements of the village football teamsand other sporting and recreational events.
In order to erect such a building a suitablefoundation would have to be prepared andlaid, as well as the supply and connection ofall necessary utilities. These are not part ofMr Darke’s proposed commitment andtherefore, presumably, would have to befinanced by the Parish Council either directlyor via alternative funding. Internal fixturessuch as showers, kitchen, flooring, lightingetc would also be required.
As vice-chairman of Stilton United FootballClub I have a vested interest in wanting afacility that would allow SUFC to once againplay its matches within the village. Far moreimportantly to me, as a proud and longstanding resident of Stilton village, I firmlybelieve that this major initiative would notonly provide a massive boost to theyoungsters and youth of the village but itwould also create a feel-good factorthroughout our community.
I also operate my own engineering business,Anglia Mechanical Ltd. Although I fullyappreciate that all the Parish Council’sfinancial dealings must be completelytransparent and commercially evaluated I canprovide qualified tradesman, on a cost pricebasis, who would be perfectly capable ofcompleting some of the other required tasks. This could help you to curb some of the costs. Also I am sure that SUFC would freelyvolunteer any help that it could and I amequally sure that I could galvanise othervolunteers from the village on the same basis.
Obviously there would be a lot of issues todiscuss and details to resolve. My personalopinion is that if the Parish Council sharesa vision for providing proper sporting andrecreational facilities, which would give ouryoungsters an outlet for some of theirenergies and help instil a greater pride acrossthe entire community, then this opportunityshould be acted upon without delay.
I enclose an artist’s impression of theproposed building together with possibilitiesfor the internal design. I also enclose a scaleplan of the total area of the field, which weused about two years ago when we wereapplying for assistance from the F.A.Nothing is cast in stone and most things couldbe amended to suit other requirements.
I will be very pleased to receive the Council’sinitial thoughts regarding this proposal. MrDarke and I will be more than happy to havea preliminary general discussion with ParishCouncillors at your earliest convenience.
Yours faithfullyGlen WoolnerVice-Chairman, Stilton United Football Club

Grassed Up?KEEP YOUR MOWER SAFE FROM THIEVES
Cambs Police have issued some timelyadvice about keeping your garden toolssecure.
Never leave lawnmowers or othergardening equipment unattendedand on show.
Use a heavy-duty padlock and chainto secure your lawnmower to aheavy anchor in a garage or shed.Consider chaining a number of itemsand tools together as this will delayanyone attempting to steal one ofthose items.
Property mark your lawnmowerusing an etching/stamping kit for avisible mark, or a ‘liquid DNA’ typeproperty marking kit for an invisiblemark. Either method of markingshould be accompanied by stickersto advertise that the equipment hasbeen property marked, as this makesit less attractive to an opportunistthief.
For expensive lawnmowers andother pieces of equipment, considerthe use of a tracking device to trackmovement should they be stolen.
If storing lawnmowers and gardeningequipment in a shed or garage, fitquality mortice locks or padlocks 1/3up and 1/3 down on the door torestrict the leverage available.
Use security screws or bolts throughthe fixings on the hinge side of thedoor.
Hang nets or curtains at the windowsof sheds/garages so that items andequipment are not on show. Evenbetter, consider using weld mesh tocover vulnerable windows.
Consider the use of a shed/garagealarm.
Consider the use of a movement-activated PIR security light on ashed/garage.

Sun AwarenessAT HOME AND ABROAD
Every year thousands of people damage theirskin with sunburn. The long-term effects ofthis damage include premature skin ageingand skin cancer. 200 new cases of skincancer are diagnosed in the UK every day.PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM THE SUN!
Your skin type affects how your skin willreact in the sun and how likely you are todevelop skin cancer. Not everyone's skinoffers the same level of protection. Peoplewith pale skin and light or red hair usuallyburn easily and rarely tan. The darker theskin, the more protection it offers, becauseit provides more melanin - the skin'sultraviolet absorbing pigment.
Follow the British Skin Foundation's Tips toenjoy the sun safely:
In sunny weather, seek shadebetween 11am and 3pm
Wear sunscreen with a SunProtection Factor (SPF) of at least15, that also provides UVAprotection, and re-apply frequently
Cover up with clothing and don'tforget to wear a hat
Never let your skin burn Kids need extra care - use high
factor sunscreen, clothing and shade Keep babies out of the sun

Managing YourMedication
Prescribing drugs is an increasingly largepart of our workload and your lives.
Our drug budget costs the NHS over £1.7million a year and I am pleased to say thatwe manage to keep very close to our budgetby careful and regular reviews of ourprescribing.
Many of our patients are on more than onemedication each month and increasingnumbers take more than a dozen differenttablets, which takes a lot of organising toensure they do not run out.
Because tablets are started at different timesas the need arises, this can result in tabletsrunning out at different times during themonth. This is not helped by themanufacturers’ packaging medication in arandom mix of 28 and 30 days’ supply.
We have noticed that some people areordering each tablet individually as they nearthe end of a pack. This can mean manyseparate requests to us for prescriptions eachmonth which is time consuming for boththem and us.
We are having a bit of a campaign at themoment to tidy up patients’ repeatprescription lists and to reduce the numberof times you have to contact us to ask for aprescription
WHAT ARE WE DOING? We will make sure the amounts
prescribed last at least one month We will offer 2 months’ supply if
patients prefer this We will try to update all repeat
prescriptions together to avoidunnecessary requests to you to'contact the GP to get more’
SCAN 302 July 2010
13Tell advertisers you found them in SCAN!
WHAT WOULD WE LIKEYOU TO DO?
At your next medication review, ifyou are only taking a small numberof different tablets ask about 56-dayprescribing
Remind your doctor to 'tidy up' yourrepeat list
Once you are on a stable drugregimen that has not changed for awhile, order ALL your medicationstogether (even if you have some leftover) in order to ensure that yourequest your pills only once a monthand not one at a time
Ask the doctor to change theamounts prescribed if the number oftablets you get is lasting less thanone month
When requesting repeats try to leave at leastthree working days between us getting therequest and you collecting the medicationfrom the pharmacy (remember we do notlook at emails over the weekend!)
And finally, always name the pharmacy youwish to collect your drugs from; an up-to-date phone number always comes in handy.
Many thanks for your help

It’s Barbecue Time!BE A BURGER KING
On July 4th 1776 America declared itsindependence from Great Britain. Ever since, the 4th of July has been an American nationalholiday and for many families the excuse fora barbecue. That means hamburgers!
So for our seasonal recipe this month, wepresent real hamburgers - not the thin,cardboard-like ‘value burgers’ you can buyin the shops, but real honest melt-in-the-mouth feasts for hungry people.
Here’s how you make them:
Mix together 1lb (alright, ½ kg!) of best-quality, lean beef mince, ½ an onion finelychopped, salt, pepper, one tablespoon ofWorcester sauce and one beaten egg. Youcan add a little paprika and ground corianderif you like.
Gently form the mixture into burgers about¾ inch thick (alright, 19mm!) and chill foran hour. Grill or griddle on the barbie forabout four minutes each side and serve atonce in a soft roll.
You can of course garnish the burger withsliced gherkins, processed cheese slices, spicy salsa etc before serving. But don’tblame SCAN for your waistline!
