Norman Is Cross !DEVELOPERS’ PLAN STILL IGNORES OBJECTIONS

Once again; just before Christmas thedevelopers of the Great Haddon site put ina planning application. Chaired by CountyCouncillor Mac McGuire, the NormanCross Action Group (NXAG) met andformulated their response. HuntingdonshireDistrict Council have also reiterated theirconcerns aired in February 2013.

NXAG has objected to the current planningapplication on the following points:-

● The Yaxley A15 Loop Road is inadequateas a means of taking traffic from thepresent A15; there are too many junctionsand it seems inadvisable to site severalschools, a commercial/retail centre andresidential areas close to this major road.

● A15/Old Great North road junction willaffect the junction 16 of the A1(M) A15junction to the Great Haddon Boulevardwill cause even worse tailbacks on theA15 than at present. Also mature treeswill be felled.

● Proposed access to the Old Great NorthRoad will affect the prestigious NationalCycleway. Also it goes against previousdecisions that only 120 vehicles a daywould be allowed.

● Surface water management is also a freshconcern.

FROM JANUARY 4th 2015There are minor changes to the timings ofBusway B Monday-Saturday (no changeson Sundays) The changes involve peak hourdeparture times from Huntingdon,Cambridge and St. Ives and journeysstarting at Huntingdon after 7pm andCambridge after 9pm. As far as can be seen,the times from Peterborough and NormanCross are unchanged. If you need furtherdetails contact Stagecoach on 01223 433250.

Keep it Green!Had a real tree this Christmas? You canrecycle it along with any garden or kitchenwaste. Stand it next to your garden wastebin, or chop it in half and put the bits insidethe bin.

Keep SafeDuring the winter, when both the morningsand the evenings are dark, the ParishCouncil frequently gets comments from cardrivers in particular that they have beenunnerved by experiencing 'near misses' onthe village roads. If you are likely to bewalking, cycling or riding a horse in thedark please take the simple precautions ofwearing reflective clothing and having theappropriate lights (working!). In particular,we would single out the newspaper deliveryboys and dog walkers.

However, car drivers are not blameless. Thewhole village is covered by a 30mph speedlimit, but there are times when that is toofast. Please drive with real care and matchyour speed to the conditions.

North Street (especially around theMemorial Hall), Church Street andCaldecote Road are the most dangerousareas with the most complaints.

Digging DeepANOTHER RECORD POPPY COLLECTION

Dear Editor

I can now send you and your readers thefigures for the 2014 Poppy appeal - so far.

The total for Stilton, Folksworth andCaldecote came to to £2075.33. This isslightly less than last year, but the goodnews is that the total for the District as awhole is more than £2000 up at £16,500!

On behalf of the Branch, my grateful thanksto all who helped and contributed. Onecurious thing was to discover that the totalcollected at the Post Office was almost theexact sum collected last year!

Apart from Peterborough Station, our twobest collecting sites in the area are the Co-opin Yaxley and Dobbies Garden Centre. Ifanyone could help next year with manningthese collecting points, please call me on01733 241784.

Project MilestonesVILLAGE AMENITIES PROJECT PROGRESS

Our trip to France and Belgium was anoutstanding success writes Pat Seaman.

People pitched in to help; the British Legionclub at Yaxley, who allowed us to parkthere; drivers Tony and Ben of Decker BusCo., everybody who helped to load andunload the coach, and Geraldine and Kimwho kept us going with food and drink onthe journey.

A raffle and donations raised the impressivesum of £77.16 for the Anglia AirAmbulance charity. Olive Main providedvaluable information about the war gravesin Belgium, for those wanting to trace lostrelatives and Val Ward did sterling servicewith all the paperwork.

Thank you to everyone who sent a card ortelephoned to express their appreciation ofthe trip.

National Awareness Days have now becomeso prolific that you can celebrate somethingevery day of the year; if you have thestamina! Our favourite is Nothing Day; ithappens every January 16th and celebratesthe ancient art of doing… nothing! It is asort of non-event event.

Penny WiseSTILTON PUPILS COUNT OUT THEIR PENNIES FOR PUDSEY

We had an action-packed Children in Needday at Stilton! Children made a donation tocome to school in non-uniform. All classescarried out lots of Maths investigations,including counting our 'Pennies for Pudsey'.Hedgehog Class organised several stalls atlunchtime to raise even more money for thisworthy cause. We raised a whopping£402.60 in total!

Across the whole school, we recently hadan 'e-safety week'. We were thinking abouthow to stay safe when using the internet.Children in each class made their owne-safety posters, which highlighted the keymessages that they learnt during the week.

Several of our Key Stage 2 children tookpart in 'Bikeability' workshops, where thechildren brought their bikes into school.They learnt how to improve their cyclingskills and how to cycle safely on roads inthe village. We are delighted that all ourchildren who took part passed.Congratulations!

We had a very busy Christmas period atStilton Primary School. In the last twoweeks of term, our children took part in ourannual Christmas Crafts day, nativity play,carol concert, singing for the Stilton Over60s club, Christmas parties, Church Serviceand Christmas Karaoke.

We wish everybody a happy New Year!

ExperiencingChristmas

The children of Stilton School visited theChurch to take part in a learning event wherethey looked at each part of the Christmasstory. All were entranced by the Nativityscene, which has become a traditional partof the Church's Christmas. In the stable,

which was made in Stilton, is a largecollection of santons. These are thetraditional dolls which were given to us byour twinning village, St Christol in the Southof France. This year our collection grewagain with the gift of several more figures.

Later in the week the school Christmasservice was held in Church and the crib wasa central feature of the worship.

Playgroup NewsWHAT A GREAT CHRISTMAS!

December was a busy and exciting time.The children made some lovely things totake home as well as to decorate thePlaygroup with. We learnt lots of Christmassongs, and all about family customs atChristmas time. We had a fabulousChristmas party and even had a visit fromFather Christmas who surprised all thechildren with gifts for being so good!

The children had so much fun they didn'teven realise they were also learningnumbers and shapes, how to join thingstogether and make them balance, as well ascontinuing to learn the phonetic alphabet!

We would like to take this opportunity tothank everyone who came along to tourStilton with Santa. It was a cold night butwe had lots of fun. A BIG thank you toeveryone who donated; you were all verygenerous. We would also like to thank thosewho came along to support our ChristmasFete. We hope everyone had lots of fun -we did! Final takings are still beingconfirmed but in future SCANs we will letyou know how we did, and how we plan tospend the money.

We received the following heartfelt pleafrom a well-known village resident to askyou to clear up after your dog.

It has become increasingly difficult to enjoya walk round any part of Stilton because ofthe amount of dog mess on the pavements.We all have to walk with our eyes cast downin order to escape the menace.

I was out the other day and saw a youngmum desperately trying to clean the shoesof the young child who had stepped intosome. It was not a pleasant task.

All you need is a plastic bag in your pocket(free from the Parish Council). Tie it upand put it in one of the bins provided. Even

if it is dark and you don't think anyone willsee, those who are behind you will not seethe mess on the pavement either. So pleaseCLEAR IT UP.

Farewell Jamie & LindaOUR RECTOR HEADS TO NEW PASTURES

After just two years, Rev’d Jamie Mackayhas announced his intention to resign as theincumbent for the Stilton Group ofChurches.

Jamie and his wife have overseen theenlargement of the Group with the inclusionof Elton, the deployment of a regular weeklyservice schedule with content and timingsto suit each parish, and the provision ofdifferent service formats such as the popularPet Services.

We will surely miss their support and highlevel of commitment to the Stilton Group.

New Year, New RecipesLET’S CELEBRATE BRITAIN’S REGIONAL DISHES

Foreigners may think that there’s no suchthing as British cuisine, but we all knowabout such delights as Yorkshire pudding,Cornish pasties, Welsh cakes etc. Not tomention the many regional specialities thatdon't get out of their own locality. We startwith the wonderfully named…

RumbledethumpsSaid to be Gordon Brown's favourite recipe,so it's no surprise that it comes fromScotland and would be a great dish forBurns’ Night (January 25th).

● 450gms potatoes, boiled and mashed

● 350gms cabbage shredded and boiled forabout two minutes

● One large onion, finely sliced and friedin butter, but not browned

Combine the potatoes, cabbage and onion

Add two tablespoons of strong cheddar andstir until melted. Season to taste.

Place in an ovenproof dish. Sprinkle anothertwo tablespoons of cheese on the top andbake at 200oC or Gas Mark 6 until brown.

You may recognise this as being similar tothe traditional English Bubble & Squeak,but almost every culture has its equivalentversion; Ireland Colcannon, Orkney IslandsClapshot; Belgium Stoemp; NetherlandsStamppot.

It’s a very versatile dish for making the mostof leftover vegetables. You can add othervegetables such as leeks or mashed swede,grate nutmeg on top, or add a spicy tang byincluding chopped up chorizo sausage.

Perfect for these cold winter evenings!

Parish Meeting RoomThe Parish Room will be open from 10am to 11am immediately following ParishCouncil meetings, which are on the Wednesday following the second Tuesday in themonth. If you want to speak with the Clerk at any other time, please make anappointment. Planning applications can be viewed by appointment; telephone (01733)229130.

HIRING THE ROOMThe Meeting Room is available for hire between 9am and 10:30pm Monday to Saturday;Sunday hours by arrangement. A booking form and conditions of hire are availablefrom the Clerk to Stilton Parish Council.The Room seats up to 20 people, ideal for small clubs or committee meetings. It hasbroadband, a kitchen area and toilet suitable for use by disabled people. Users shouldnote that smoking is not permitted in any part of the building or in the surroundingcemetery.
