MPP Piccini Announces Final Approval for Ed’s House, Northumberland Hospice Care Centre
On Sunday April 14th supporters of Community Care Northumberland’s, Ed’s House gathered along with MPP David
Piccini at Hamilton Township Municipal Building. The event was an opportunity to hear the news that the govern-
ment of Ontario has given approval of the Capital Program application for the site of Ed’s House Northumberland
Hospice Care Centre. The contract for the building has been awarded and development of the hospice care centre is
able to move forward.
The provincial government has allocated $1.2 million in capital funding and $630,000 in operational funding to
support Ed’s House. This is an important and exciting announcement for Community Care Northumberland, for the
project team and for the residents of our community.
This announcement allows Ed’s House to begin construction of their 18,800 square foot hospice hub with six
operational beds located on Ontario Street in Hamilton Township. Ed’s House will be a hospice hub providing
residential hospice care 24/7 at no cost to those receiving the service.
The approval means more people in Northumberland and across Ontario can access end-of-life care in a home-like
setting thanks to the investment by the government of nearly $33.6 million to build 193 new hospice beds.
“Ed’s House will provide our residents with quality, compassionate end-of-life care in a comfortable setting that is
close to home,” said MPP Piccini. “All of our residents and families deserve access to dignified end-of-life care and
our Government fully supports the remarkable Hospice teams around our community.”

the entire ED’s House project team for their dedication and
hard work to make this hospice a reality,” said MPP Piccini.

overwhelming support of this project to-date.”

CCN In the News: March For Meals—Raising Awareness Hot and Frozen Available in Colborne
Mayor Mandy Martin joined together with a CCN volunteers on March 28th to help deliver hot meals to local
Meals on Wheels clients in Colborne.

Volunteers pick up the hot prepared Meals on
Wheels insulated bags at the old United
Church in Colborne, located at the corner of
Lyle and Percy Street and deliver them to
clients on a pre-planned route in Cramahe Township during the noon hour. The pre-planned route of stops takes
no longer than 1 hour. When the route is completed, the volunteers return the bags to our Colborne program
office. Last year, with the help of local volunteers over 1,759 hot and frozen meals were delivered throughout the
Alnwick-Haldimand and Colborne area.
Hot meals are prepared by Black Dress Catering and are $6.00 each. They
include an entrée, vegetable and side, soup or salad, bread and dessert.
Frozen meals are available for $5.75 each and there are many options
suitable for dietary needs. On today’s hot meal menu, stuffed cabbage,
baby red roasted potatoes, baked beans accompanied with a roll, salad
and for dessert, fruit or white cake with a brown sugar icing.

A Few Spaces Left in the Journal Writing Workshop in Brighton
Childhood memories are telling about who we are. In this workshop, Cathy
Ireland, makes journaling easy and fun. She will share from a journal guide that
she wrote a few years ago, introducing a variety of writing topics, designed to
inspire reflection, writing and sharing. Participants will be encouraged to explore
more fully the lesson’s learned or the moral of the story coming now from their
adult perspective. This is a workshop you won’t want to miss!

walk starting at the Lions Pavilion, moving along
Cobourg’s beautiful west beach towards the
boardwalk and then up to King Street for a
historical stroll through downtown Cobourg.
Finishing off back at Victoria Park and the Lions
Pavilion for a wrap up ceremony and BBQ.

Community Diners in Grafton—RCL—Branch 580
Every 4 months, volunteers from the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion – Lt. Col. John W Foote, Branch 580 in Grafton host one of our Community Diners programs.
Served buffet style, their recent menu included: ham, scalloped potatoes, mixed vegatables, coleslaw and rolls. For dessert, a selection of pies, apple, pumpkin or Irish crème with coffee or tea.

New Pilot Project in Trent Hills
On April 29th, with support from the Municipality of Trent Hills, we will provide a transit system for the residents of Campbellford, Hastings and Warkworth that will allow access within and between communities through multiple stops, four times a day.
This new service will be provided as non-on-demand. This means that the van will operate by schedule and circle between the three towns within the municipality. The schedule is currently not finalized however in general the van will start in Hastings (3 stops) around 8:00am, then to Warkworth (3 stops) and then onto Campbellford (5 stops). It will then circle again. This route will take place twice in the morning and twice in the afternoon. Residents will be able to obtain this trip for $5 per way. Should residents like to spend a few hours in Campbellford and travel around, they may transfer for a $2 ride. The department will soon also announce daily and monthly pass options for regular riders.
Trent Hills Transit is something that has been made possible with the support of Trent Hills Council and Mayor Bob Crate. Annual funding and infrastructure support are what has made created this opportunity. Together, we will pilot this initiative and determine community and departmental impact towards the end of June and make any adjustments required to ensure the cost effectiveness of the service.
In addition to municipal support, the Trent Hills program expansion has been made possible by the recent grant received through MTO (Ministry of Transportation). This grant, totaling $497,200 over five years, has allowed for approximately $90,000 increase to the Trent Hills budget this fiscal year and includes the purchase of a new vehicle next year.
Kaylee McIlmoyle, Van Scheduler, has created a route that is also a natural expansion to other routes. Kaylee has used data from the area’s ridership and has chosen most frequently requested areas and times so that current riders will remain with existing schedules. As Kaylee also schedules other routes, there are two more vans available to the area to continue providing both our Rural-to-Urban and Specialized Options transportation services. Both these will remain as “on-demand” services in order to ensure no riders are missed.

Stay tuned, we have further expansion initiatives on the way for the western part of the county through the Central Route. An increase in days as well as an advertising campaign to increase western ridership will be the focus of our second quarter this fiscal year.
