FORTNIGHTLY NEWSLETTER
Relentlessly
Issue 4
Friday 11th October 2019
Over this past week, the senior leadership
team have started to undertake teaching
and learning reviews across the school,
which means spending a whole day in a year
group watching teaching and learning,
looking in books and talking to children.
Although this is done on a daily basis
through popping into classes, the
opportunity for the leadership team to
spend a whole day in a year group isn’t so
common. We have only visited two year
groups this week (doing two a week) and
the one thing we have picked up is that if we
ask the children what they are learning, they
are often telling us what they are doing
rather than what they are learning. They
have been able to articulate this when
questioned further. As parents and carers,
we would like you to change the question
you ask your child/ren when you collect
them, rather than ask them what they have
been doing, please ask them what they have
been learning. We think you’ll be
impressed!
We have had some staffing changes
recently. We recently said goodbye to Ms
French and Ms Smith in their role as
Learning Resource Assistants. Both staff had
been at the school for some time,
unfortunately due to school budget
restraints, these posts were not sustainable.
Today, Mrs Amass (EYFS Teaching Assistant)
left De Lucy after 5 years to spend more
time with her young son. Next week Miss
Bradshaw our welfare officer will be leaving
us after a long period of time working at De
Lucy. Miss Bradshaw will be working nearer
to home as she has a very long daily
commute. I am sure that you will join me in
thanking the above staff for their hard work
and commitment to the school and wish
them well for the future.

Curriculum Update Visitors in Reception
This week, Reception have been talking about people who help us at
home, school and in the wider community. We were visited by some
members of staff from De Lucy. Mrs Lodge, Mr Lewis and Mr French
came to speak to us about their jobs and how they help us at school.
We were also visited by Carly the firefighter.
Carly came to talk to us about her job and how the fire brigade help
others. Carly showed us her protective clothing and we loved trying
on her helmet. She spoke about the importance of having a smoke
alarm in the home and told us that the fire brigade will come and fit
them in homes that don’t have any.
Year 2 Trip
Year 2 recently enjoyed an exciting trip to a local Hindu temple. The children arrived in time to observe a traditional
service performed by the temple priest. After this they listened to some Hindu stories and learnt all about Hindu
festivals and how they are celebrated.
It was a great opportunity to learn more about the Hindu religion and all the children enjoyed the trip!
Year 5 Trip
Recently, Year 5 continued their study of Space by visiting 'The Moon' exhibition in Greenwich. The children took
part in a 'Mysterious Moons' workshop which was led by an astronomer from the observatory. They investigated the
attributes of different moons and discussed the chances of life being found on each. After the workshop, the children
had the opportunity to look at a wide range of exhibits linked to space that included pieces of the moon gifted to the
UK from the moon landings.
Library Update The library is now in full swing for children in Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6). The children visit weekly during one of their
reading lessons and have the opportunity to select a new book, read quietly or listen to a story read by an adult. This
will be extended to the Early Years and Key Stage 1 after half-term. Following their library visit, all children in Years
1-6 are able to borrow a book providing they have a De Lucy bookbag to carry it to and from school.
Children in the EYFS will choose books from the library for their teacher to read to them in their class. Last week, we
launched class library boxes outside of the Reception classes. Children can chose books with their parents to take
home for their bedtime story. This will be extended to Nursery after half-term when they are given their new
bookbags.
Running the library are librarians from Year 6. Before the holidays, the children completed an application form to
apply for their positions and then sat an interview. They are working hard supporting with the organisation and
tidying of the library and have kindly volunteered one of their lunchtimes a week to do this. They have also opened
the library to children in Key Stage 2 who would like to read during their lunch break.
The librarians are currently thinking of fundraising ideas to be able to purchase more books for the library. If you
have any books that are in a good condition that are no longer needed, they would be much appreciated.

Minutes Late 564 966
When a child arrives late at school, they miss important events like assembly, teacher’s instructions and introductions. Children also feel embarrassed at having to enter the classroom late.
How does it impact on my child’s learning? Lateness has a negative impact. Being late can:
- Disrupt lessons - Affect achievement - Embarrass/upset your child
Effect of late arrival The table above indicates how frequent lateness
can add up to a considerable amount of lost
learning. This can seriously disadvantage children
and disrupt the learning of others.
