Issue 4 10 th November 2017 Dear Parents and Carers, It’s been a great start to the second half of the autumn term, again with so many things happening. We had a very successful two days of training during our INSET days last week. Staff were trained in positive handling and conflict management and then attachment awareness on the second day. They were great training sessions and staff have started to adapt their practice as a result. We have now finalised our School Raising Achievement Plan (RAP) including the priorities for the year ahead. These are detailed on our school website should you wish to look but we will be having a big focus this year on reading and especially boys reading. Our Literacy Leaders, Mrs Clarke and Mrs Cousins will be sharing with you some of the great ideas to get our boys reading more. Thank you once again for sharing your thoughts about homework. Mrs Shepherd and Mrs Harland will be busy collating the results and then feeding those back with views on the way forward. As you may have heard through our social media sites, we need to congratulate Mr Foulds on the birth of his second son, Teddy. He is a lovely new addition and mum and baby are doing well. Thank you to Mr Molineux for organising the E-Safety evening for parents on Tuesday. There were a larger number of parents who attended, than last time and they were very appreciative of the sessions. It certainly opened up lots of good conversations about how to keep your children safe online and some of the new sites/apps that children are using. The slides from the presentation will hopefully be put on the school website soon. A big well done to Mr Molineux also as he has become an SLE (Specialist Leader of Education) in maths after a hard selection criteria. He joins Mrs Shepherd in school as SLEs, Mrs Shepherd has an SLE for phonics. They will be helping staff at Lawn and other schools develop their practice in these areas. Alongside that I have become a NLE (National Leader of Education), one of a few Headteachers in Derby City and across the country to have this status. We are very proud of what we do at Lawn and this needs to be shared. After lots of complaints from parents, please can I remind parents not to drive down Norbury Close. The new owners of Park Farm are more than happy for parents to park in their carpark at the beginning and end of the day. Parents have also asked that when waiting at the gates at the start of the day please can we try to ensure that children are not playing in the road and that there is space on the pavement for them. This will really help to keep our children safe at the start and end of school. I know that some of you have asked about our school fundraising calendar. Mrs NEWSLETTER

November2017

Dear Parents and Carers,

It’s been a great start to the second half of the autumn term, again with so many things happening.

There were a larger number of

parents who attended, than last time and they were very appreciative of the sessions.

Hallam and I saw and approved the final draft last week so they are now being printed. They will hopefully be on sale very soon and will make a great Christmas present.

I hope to see lots of you over the next few weeks during the run up to our Christmas festivities including the LSA Christmas Fayre on Friday 24th November.

Kind regards

Y4 Violin/ Viola lessons

In year 4 we have started to learn to play the violin or viola, we began in September by playing ‘keep the beat’ games and singing a variety of short songs, which was lots of fun! We then progressed onto more complex songs and games involving the rhythm, pitch and learning the different notes of the strings.

After half term we finally got to have our instruments and we have begun to play some of the songs we learnt previously by plucking the strings.

Soon we will move on to using our bows which we are all really looking forward to (although I’m not sure our parents are!). When we become a bit better we will hopefully put on a performance, we will keep you posted!

Year 3W Trip to Pride Park

On 9th November we went to Pride Park Stadium. We met another school called Akall Primary School, they are a sikh school.

We had a stadium tour after we did a quiz about England. We also made some

badges and played lots of games about the difference between us. While we was there we made lots of friends.

We all had a great day and hope we see them again!.

Year 5 Fund Rasing

Many of you may not be aware that year 5 are currently working with the Derby Music Partnership in conjunction with the Royal Opera House on the Opera Carmen.

They have been given the fantastic opportunity to go to see the Opera Carmen at the Royal Opera House in London.

As you can imagine this will be an amazing experience for them and one that not many children their age get to experience.

We would like you all to support the children in this fantastic opportunity by taking part in some fund raising events the year group are organising to help raise funds towards the cost.

On the 1st December we will be holding a whole school Angelfest competition. The children can make a pair of angel wings which they must be able to wear. The cost will be £1 to take part, the theme will be Christmas and a prize awarded to the most creative wings.

The second event is a Christmas Quiz on 5th December. Following on from the success of our last quiz evening, year 5 will be hosting another one with a Christmas theme. There will be lots of fun and games during the evening along side the Quiz.

A Letter will be going out with more details of these two events.

I hope you will all help us with this fantastic opportunity and help raise as much as we can.

Mrs Harland & Miss Ayub.

Cooking Lesson with Mr Aka

Eva Hembury was one of our lucky winners of the LSA Summer Fayre Cake Competition.

Her prize was to have a cooking lesson with our very own Mr Aka. Eva had her lesson on Friday 20th October and choose to make Chocolate Chip Cookies.

Here are some of the pictures from Eva’s lesson and also what Eva had to say about her time with Mr Aka.

“I had to wear a hat and an apron which made me feel a little silly, but Mr Aka made me laugh. I enjoyed mixing all the ingredients together and cutting it into cookie shapes. When I took my cookies out of the oven with Mr Aka’s help I liked seeing what I had baked. It was really good fun.

My favourite cookie was the one I made for my Daddy, it was bigger than my face! My Daddy didn’t eat all of his cookie so Me and Mummy had some of it too. We saved our cookies to take on holiday to Norfolk.”

Staff in the spotlight. Hi all, My name is Andy Foulds, I am the Site Manager here at Lawn, I have been working here for 3 years. I enjoy working at Lawn as it is a friendly school, and I am always doing something different each day. Outside of Lawn I am a keen runner, I have completed a few half Marathons earlier this year, and look to do a full Marathon in the near future. I also like to play golf either at the driving range or on the golf course. I have two children both boys, one called Max who is 3 on Christmas Eve, and another new addition who was born on the 19th October, he is called Teddy. We have a family caravan in Wales which we enjoy going to a few times a year. The plus side to the caravan is it has a really nice Golf Course close by!

Join the Lawn Lottery for your chance to win. It’s only £2 per month and raises vital funds to help your child’s time at Lawn Primary be a happy one. Speak to anyone on the committee or email us for details. Letters will be going out in book bags soon, so look out for them and do join up.

LSA Noticeboard

forthcoming events for this school year – please come and have a read.

LSA - About Us

The Lawn School Association (“LSA”) is our school parent-teacher association (PTA). PTAs are best known for their fundraising work but they have a useful social function too as fundraising events provide an opportunity for parents, staff and pupils to get together. The money raised at our events (e.g. Christmas Fayre, Easter Bingo, School Discos, Summer Fayre, etc.) are intended to provide ‘extras’ not already provided by the school's main income – often 'fun things' that make learning more interesting and exciting.

The friendly LSA Committee for this year is

Ø Nicola Severn – Chair

Ø Claire Milne – Vice Chair

Ø Sam Adie – Secretary

Ø Kerry Tague – Treasurer

Meetings and emails

If there are any parents/carers who would like to help the committee with running of events, or if you have some great ideas for the future of the school, or would just be interested in what we do, then why don’t you come along to our next meeting?

If you would also like to be on our circular e-mailing list to be kept in the loop e.g. receiving the minutes of our meetings, then please send your email address to our Hotmail account below.
