If we were in a Marine Recon Unit we would pride ourselves as a “Lean Mean Fighting Machine”, and spend most of our time making sure we stayed that way. As project management professionals we need to be a “Lean Mean Listening Machine”. Listening is the one PM soft skill that you don’t have to be born with, yet you can still excell. As we all know, communications is between 80% and 95% of our time. And as good communicators we should spend most of that time LISTENING. Now how can we be most effective at listening? Requirements Definition - Project and Outcome Success Drivers
Abstract: A recurring challenge for projects is the delivery of outcomes that meet customer expectations. When project outcomes do not produce expected results, both the project and resulting outcome will likely be viewed unfavorably. Requirements definition is a well-known technique for specifying project outcomes that is recognized by PMI as a critical success driver. Using tools and techniques from PMBOK and the newly released Professional in Business Analysis (PMI-PBA) Practitioner’s Guide, a project manager can significantly improve the chances that outcomes will meet expectations, and the associated projects will be judged favorably.

Thought Leadership in Project Management
This month’s article describes the work performed by the authors Josh Iorio and John E. Taylor about the Precursors to
engage leaders in virtual project teams. Virtual teams are emerging as viable organizational structures to have specialized
knowledge geographically distributed for the execution of projects. This work aims to add knowledge to the process of recognition
and training of prospective candidates for effective leadership roles in virtual project teams, by investigating the relationship that
may exist between workers’ previous experiences and the likelihood that they will become engaged and effective leaders to support
project work and relationships.
In the literature, it can be found that one of the classifications of leadership styles is based on transactional and
transformational leadership. The first style gives attention to task-related exchange of actions and reward between follower and
leader. The second style supports a person-orientation by aligning followers’ needs with the organization’s tasks and goals. Project
managers can perform a variety of interaction that fell in either one of these leadership styles. In this regard, the authors propose
that besides engagement in transactional and transformational interactions, effective virtual project team leaders should also
engage in technological interactions (e.g. troubleshooting). These technological aspects become crucial when leaders aim to
manage the transfer of knowledge and information across different geographic areas. The authors spotlight five dependent
variables to analyze the engagement in transactional, transformational and technological interactions: rapport building, solidarity
building, task and role assignments, virtual situation awareness and troubleshooting. To analyze the interactions associated with
the dependent variables, the authors included three independent variables, based on the candidate’s prior experiences: leadership
training for traditional project teams, experience working in distributed teams and experience working through the technological
medium of interaction. The final dataset was based in 47 hours of interactions during four weeks between four networks of 20
individuals each. The virtual interactions were conducted in CyberGRID (Cyber-enabled Global Research Infrastructure for Design)
(Iorio et al., 2011). A multiple regression model was used to identify patterns.
At first, the authors found out that leaders’ previous experiences have an important influence in the level of engagement
in transformational, transactional and technological interactions in virtual project teams. The traditional leadership training showed
a positive effect on the engagement in interactions for rapport building, solidarity building and task/role assignment, and even more,
this effect was moderated by previous experience working in distributed teams. Also, it was found that leaders who have had prior
experience working in distributed teams are better equipped to create shared situation awareness, which will determine the team
members’ understanding of the environment and the common interpretation of the events. Furthermore, this effect is increased
when leaders have prior experience working through the specific technological medium of interaction, since it helps to build a
shared awareness of the virtual environment and allows the engagement in troubleshooting, often specific to a particular
technology. According to the authors, the technological experiences are crucial to effective leadership in virtual project teams, as
they help increase the interaction efficiency by reducing the noise of interaction triggered by technological mediation.
In conclusion, the authors demonstrate that leaders’ engagement in the interactions of virtual teams have variances
depending on their previous experiences. The authors propose that virtual team leaders should be selected taking into account
their previous experience working in distributed teams and experience with the technological medium or else, the candidates may
be provided with these experiences before receiving the virtual team leadership assignment.

This professional development scholarship will enable the chapter to support the continuing education of project management practitioners as well as to promote lifelong learning that advances knowledge of the field. The PMI Houston Chapter Milestone Scholarship is a professional development scholarship administered by the PMI Educational Foundation (PMIEF) Scholarships, Grants & Awards Program in honor of PMI chapters achieving certain anniversaries. PMIEF is a charitable nonprofit organization leveraging project management for social good®. Please find additional information below:
Applications are due by 31 July. In order to be considered eligible for a scholarship, applicants must specify a project management course that is either stand-alone or as part of a certificate or certification program. Applicants will be evaluated with the following order of priority:

PMI Houston Offers Scholarships
PMI Houston Offers $40,000 in Scholarships to Project Management Students
For the second year in a row, the PMI Houston Chapter is offering $2000 scholarships to 20 Houston-area undergraduate and graduate students in fields emphasizing the importance of project management. These generous scholarships support students and are also one of the many ways that the organization fosters excellence in the project management profession.
Last year, PMI Houston awarded $40,000 in scholarships to celebrate the chapter’s 40th anniversary, and the scholarships were well received. Sam Houston State University student Devin McCullough expressed gratitude for the scholarship. “It is an honor to be recognized by PMI for the work I have been putting towards studying operations management, and I am very grateful for the opportunity that has been provided.” Johann Lane, a Finance student and military veteran added, “I am getting married in March and have 2 little girls. My family and I greatly appreciate everything!” Several students also expressed an interest in pursuing PMI certification.
The application process is competitive and selection is based on the student’s GPA, college transcript, resume, recommendation letter and an essay. In addition, students are required to study a subject related to project management and live and study within 100 miles of Houston. “We had given scholarships before, but never for such a large amount,” noted David Thomas. “The 2015 Board of Directors voted in January to award the same total amount this year and expect quite a few applications.”

New PMI Houston Downtown Venue
New PMI Houston Downtown Venue Offers Programs and Networking
Exciting news for the Downtown Venue come in the form of its recent
move from the Houston Downtown Library to a more centrally located
CenterPoint Energy Tower. Under the direction of Tim Powell and
through volunteering efforts of CenterPoint Energy’s Mitchell Crocker,
our Downtown venue was able to negotiate the use of CenterPoint’s
facilities, a move which has already showed great benefits in terms of
available services.
The first meeting was held at the new location on October 30th of last
year, an event at which its nearly 50 attendees had a chance to learn
about the ever-important Stakeholder Analysis and Management. In the venue’s ongoing efforts to provide a varied
meeting template and keep its attendees engaged, in the very next month, a panel discussion covering how the PMP
certification can help PMs in their PM careers was conducted and featured Mitchell Crocker, Lee Gay, and Nathan
Kranson of Shell. The panel discussion was moderated by the venue’s own director, Tim Powell. Although not all
speakers have been confirmed for future meetings, the venue looks forward to presenting more insightful topics such as
Communicating More Effectively as a PM, Stakeholder Buy-In, and Project Recovery. In addition, downtown venue’s
own Mitchell Crocker, a new(er) PMP, will be speaking at this year’s conference on the topic of a day in the life of a
new PMP so make sure you go and hear him share his experience in an area to which all PMPs can relate.
Located at the 13th floor – Room 1360/65 of the CenterPoint Energy Tower downtown on 1111 Louisiana Street, a few
blocks from the Theater District, the venue is a prime location for anyone working in the downtown district at
corporations such as Kinder Morgan, NRG, Shell, Hess Corporation, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and Chevron. Its
relative proximity to I-45 makes the location also accessible to those who wish to attend but are not within Houston’s
CBD.

PMI Houston Rebuilding Together
PMI Houston is once again partnering with Rebuilding Together Houston (RTH) in their Volunteer Home Repair Program (VHRP) this spring. Each year, in April and October, hundreds of sponsored crews work for two days (usually Saturdays) restoring the exteriors of homes selected by RTH. Qualified homes receive critical refurbishments as a result of this extraordinary outpouring of compassion from the RTH volunteers. Each sponsored VHRP crew (usually 20+ volunteers each) is matched, according to skill level, with the degree of difficulty of the home to be repaired. Repairs range from scrape and paint to siding replacement, window repair, energy efficiency upgrades, building handrails or wheelchair ramps. The PMI Houston Chapter RTH Volunteer Coordinator is Max Rodgers and can be contacted at

THE NEW WOODLANDS PROJECT MANAGEMENT TOASTMASTERS CLUB TO BEGIN IN MAY
The PMI-Houston Board of Directors has approved the sponsorship and funding for a new Project Management Toastmasters club that will meet in the Woodlands. There will be a Toastmasters demonstration meeting held at the Woodland’s PMI venue on Tuesday, April 21st. The Woodlands Project Management Toastmasters club’s meetings will align with the Woodland’s monthly PMI-H venue. The club will begin having meetings in May and will meet twice monthly on the 2nd & 4th Tuesday evenings of each month, starting at 6:15pm for networking and 6:30pm meeting start time. Meeting location is tentatively planned to be in the same meeting room where the monthly PMI meetings are held - Sam Houston State University – Woodlands campus. Project Management Toastmasters clubs are open to all, but members are predominately professional project managers. The clubs welcome people from all backgrounds and professions. Houston Area Project Management Toastmasters Clubs are sponsored by PMI Houston and aligned with the goals of PMI International.
