Welcome to the latest Club Newsletter Firstly, as this is the last Newsletter of 2018 can I thank all those who have contributed to the Newsletter in 2018, especially for the photographs and articles. Wishing everyone a Happy Christmas. BUS DRIVER required for 2019 on RP1 Bus Service in Richmond Park: If you fancy volunteering in Richmond Park driving the free Minibus do let me know. I need a further driver for 2019. Only on a Wednesday and I need someone who can do 8 to 10 Wednesdays between Easter and end of October. If interested please speak to me or e-mail me at [email protected] Minibus Driving Training will be provided. Do remember that if the link in the email doesn’t work, you can obtain the Newsletter from our website under “Newsletters”. I am happy to receive photographs for this publication so don’t forget to take your cameras when out and about on MG events. Malcolm

Attendance at Events Two recent events organised for members, Architectural Plants and Kempton Steam Museum, had a high number of no shows which were greater than 25% of the numbers who elected to attend. Whilst the club did not suffer financially, we made arrangements for additional food to be available. I know that it is not always possible for people to attend for very good reasons, but I would ask members to let the organiser know should you be unable to attend a specific event so we know not to expect you. St Raphael’s Hospice - Light up a Life Service I wish to thank the 16 members who volunteered their help at this year’s Light up a Life Service at the Hospice. Also tonight is your last chance to purchase Christmas cards and novelties in support of the Hospice. 2019 Committee Election I am pleased to confirm that Nigel Taylor will be joining the Committee for 2019 and will take on responsibility for Natters and will also assist Margaret with her Social Secretary’s workload. 2018 Charity Donations This is your last opportunity to nominate a local charity to be considered for a small donation from the club. You should submit a written request giving details of the charity and how a donation would be used if they were successful. Please note that National Charities will not be considered. Nominations must be with Bryan Young by the close of tonight’s meeting. 2018 Dinner Dance and Annual Awards This will be held at the Kingswood Golf and Country Club on Saturday, 19 January 2019. The ticket price for members and guests will remain at £35 per person. There will be the usual choices for each course from the menu and dress will be black tie or lounge suit. J A Sounds will again provide music for dancing. Paul Coleman will be taking your booking, meal choices and seating arrangements. Please make payment with your booking in cash or by cheque, made payable to ‘EPSOM AREA MGOC’ and make known your seating preferences. This is always a popular event, so do please book early to avoid disappointment. The menu choices and booking form and a wine list can be found elsewhere in this newsletter. Year End Message Yet another year in the life of the Epsom Area comes to a close and I wish to thank the members and committee for their individual and collective contribution to club affairs and the excellent support for the programme of events, which I know is greatly appreciated by those who organise them. On behalf of Doreen and myself, I wish all members and their families a Happy Christmas and hope that you enjoy good health and happiness throughout the coming year. Safe motoring and NO DRINK DRIVING. With my best wishes, Eric

Alan Foot’s excellent MG Metro and his son’s (Karl Foot) superb RV8. A fitting reward for the way these two cars are maintained by their owners. Well done! Malcolm

OMMITTEE ELECTIONS 2lly. Membership Secretary - Responsible for registering and maintaining the do with the provision of - Responsible for the ordering, promotion andCOMMITTEE ELECTIONS 2019 As Eric has mentioned in Chairman’s Chatterings, at two recent events many members who had booked, failed to turn up and didn’t bother to let anyone know they couldn’t come, nor did they apologise afterwards for their absence. All contact details are published in every newsletter and also on our website, so there is really no excuse. One such event was the Kempton Steam Museum on Sunday 21st October 2018, which Paul and I were running in Margaret’s absence. She had worked hard to arrange this visit for the 54 members who booked and chose a specific Sunday when the big engines would be ‘’in steam’’ and the Runnymede Meccano Guild would be putting on their Marvels of Meccano Exhibition. Our show of MGs was published as an attraction on the Kempton Steam Museum website. Additionally, a discounted entry charge was negotiated because a large number of members had booked. Members started to arrive at 9.30 am, as requested, as the museum opened to the public at 10.30am and we didn’t want to shuffle the MGs around amongst the general public. Unfortunately, 22 members failed to attend! I feel that this reflects badly on the club as the Museum had gone out of their way to assist the Club, with extra staff, extra food and extra tours! I would, however, again like to thank the members who did attend and for the ones that brought their MGs – we all had a fabulous day. The same thing happened previously at the Architectural Plant Centre in Pulborough where many members didn’t turn up, again without notice, which also caused delays to the organised tours. I would like to thank all Epsom members for your continued faith in the existing committee; we are obviously getting it right and satisfying all your requirements. All the current members have agreed to re-stand for another year. We welcome Nigel Taylor to the committee who will be organizing and running the monthly Natters as well as assisting Margaret Billinge. There will not, therefore, need to be an election in January. I would like to thank my fellow committee members for all their hard work throughout the year and also all the club members for supporting our numerous events. A tremendous amount of work goes on behind the scenes in order to organize these events and it is very rewarding when attendances are so high. The December monthly meeting is the closing date for your nomination for a donation to your local charity. You should give some information about the charity, how you are involved with it, and how it might use a small donation from the Club. If you are unable to attend the meeting and wish to submit a nomination, I can accept your request by email or snail mail by Tuesday 11th December at the very latest. (My details are in the committee listings.) The charitable awards will be made at the annual Dinner Dance & Awards night on 19th January. Linda will be selling the St Raphael’s Christmas cards again tonight along with their seasonal toys, etc., so please dig deep and see if we can raise more money than we did last year. I am still collecting stamps for the Canine Partners Puppy Stamp appeal, so please keep them coming. I would like to thank Eric, Paul & Ted, for stepping in to organize the buffet and to run the darts night on 24th November in my absence. 33 people attended and I hope you all had a good evening. No doubt Eric will announce the results at the December meeting. I am seriously considering re-fitting the hardtop on my F (which is still awaiting its new headlining) but I do need to wait until the fabric hood is completely dry before folding it down. It is so nice to have a heated rear window that clears quickly, and the hardtop completely transforms the car, makes it much stiffer to drive and far more cosy. I must be getting old!!! The MoT is also due, so we will see if she throws up any nasty faults again this year. Might need a bottle of Catclean and an Italian tune-up to get it to pass the emissions this year. I would like to finish by wishing all members and their families a Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year. Kind regards, Bryan and Piggy

We should arrive for lunch at 12-12.15 so for those of you who are still finding it difficult to rise these dark mornings, we will be pleased to see you then. For those of you who intend to make the run, the start time will be 10.30am for departure at 11.am from ‘The Pheasant’ at Buckland, RH3 7BG, located on the A25 west of Reigate. Tea, coffee and toilets are available. Tin tops acceptable for this event! Names and lunch numbers to Derek Edwards (01737 765891) prior to the event please. More details to follow next month. MG & Triumph Show at Stoneleigh – Sunday 10th February 2019 This event is a good opportunity to meet old friends and to find those elusive spare parts from specialist traders and cars for sale etc. Hunt the Valentine Run – Sunday 17th February 2019 This year we are once again joining forces with the SE Centre of the MG Car Club. This is a good opportunity to dust down your car and partake with your valentine in some light- hearted fun in and around Surrey. Tin tops are again acceptable on this event. Full details to follow next month. Bruges/Blankenberge Tour Belgium – 3rd– 6th May 2019 Looking further ahead to next year’s events it is planned to visit Belgium over the early May Bank Holiday weekend. The current proposal is to stay on the coast in Blankenberge, just 13 minutes by train from Bruges. Further details will be available shortly once any Brexit implications have been clarified. Those interested should speak to me at the next meeting or by phone on 01737 765891. European Event of the Year 2019 – Barcelona, Spain – 1st – 4th August 2019 Next year’s European Event of the Year is being organised by the Spanish MG Car Club and will be held in Barcelona. Further information will be available by the end of the year. I hope you have enjoyed the various car events during 2018. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all. Derek Edwards

CHRISTMAS MESSAGES: Ted and Sue Oughton send Best Wishes to all Members for a Happy Christmas and healthy and prosperous New Year. They will not be sending cards but making a charitable donation to a worthy cause. Derek and Anne Edwards send Best Wishes to Members for Christmas and the New Year. They will be making a donation to Macmillan Nurses so will not be sending Christmas cards this year. Bryan and Linda Young wish all Members a Merry Christmas and will be making a donation to St Raphael’s instead of sending cards.
