    FAVOURITE FALCONETTEI TAKES LAKE RACE

The Pavel Vovcenko-trained FALCONETTEI has won one of the highlights of the German racing season on Tuesday, the Alpine Motorenöl-Seejagdrennen lake race at Hamburg on Tuesday evening. A type of steeplechase unique to Germany in which horses have to swim through a lake as part of the course, Falconettei, sent off the 28:10 favourite on the local tote, and jockey Cevin Chan came home unchallenged, with Swedish raider Force Group running a huge race to finish second under Irish-born Mark Quinlan. Veteran chaser Supervisor was third, with Italian-trained Collar an Tie under English rider Tom Garner back in fourth. A field of thirteen runners took part, one of the biggest ever fields assembled for a lake race, and all thirteen of them negotiated the lake successfully. PERFECT PROTECTIONIST IN GROUP 2 HAMBURG VICTORY

The 2014 Melbourne Cup winner PROTECTIONIST was a comfortable winner of the Group 2 www.pferdewetten. de Grosser Hansa-Preis, the big race of the day at Hamburg on Sunday.

Having won the corresponding race in 2014, Andreas Wöhler’s stable star, settled in mid-division by jockey Eddie Pedroza, moved to the head of affairs at the top of the straight, and pulled clear of his rivals for a 3¼ length victory from the Hans-Jürgen Gröschel-trained Iquitos under Scottish-born rider Ian Ferguson with Guignol a further four lengths back in third.

‘The ground wasn’t ideal for Protectionist’, said trainer Wöhler of the conditions, officially given as soft to heavy, ‘but he’s got lots of class, and he showed that today’.

    NINETEEN RUNNERS DECLARED GERMAN DERBY

This year’s German Derby Festival began last Saturday in Hamburg with the main event itself taking place on the last day of the festival, Sunday 10th July. A field of nineteen has been declared, however with rain and heavy ground forecast, organisers are bracing themselves for several possible withdrawals as several of the runners look better suited to a sound surface.

There are two overseas runners in the race. LANDOFHOPEANDGLORY has been supplemented by the all-conquering Coolmore operation as well as the top team of jockey Ryan Moore and trainer Aidan O’Brien. However, this High Chapparal colt hasn’t won in his last eight races, and was beaten favourite in his last two contests. The other overseas raider in Norwegian raider OUR LAST SUMMER, winner of the Norwegian 2000 Guineas before finishing second at Bremen last month. Ridden as he was in the Bremen race by Scottish jockey Robert Havlin, Our Last Summer, like Landofhopeandglory, is unproven on heavy ground, and it looks the prise will be staying at home this year.

WAI KEY STAR is the highest rated horse in the race on official figures, however the Andreas Wöhler-trained colt has never raced on anything other than good ground, the same of which could be said for LARRY, winner of both his starts for Berlin-based trainer Uwe Stech. BOSCACCIO on the other hand, who is unbeaten in all four of his races to date, has twice won on soft ground, giving the Christian Sprengel-trained colt a big chance here. Last time out, Boscaccio landed the Group 2 Union Rennen in Cologne, seen as one of the top Derby trials. Several of the Union Rennen field, EL LOCO (second), DSCHINGIS SECRET (third), BERGHAIN (fourth), SAVOIR VIVRE (fifth) and BORA ROCK (seventh) all re-oppose here, with the ultra-consistent El Loco and previous heavy ground winner Dschingis Secret probably the best on form.

ISFAHAN seemed to struggle with the heavy ground in May’s Italian derby at Rome, whilst as well as the aforementioned Bora Rock, top trainer Peter Schiergen relies of three runners here, NIMROD and LANDIN, both of whom look to be outsiders here. However, PARTHENIUS, who was a somewhat unlucky non-runner in the French Derby after a passport misunderstanding, could well be the one to be on here. A full brother to 2012 German Derby winner Pastorius, Parthenius, who like Pastorius is trained by Krefeld-based Mario Hofer, has yet to race beyond 1700 metres, but has won both his starts on soft ground. Fifth on his season reappearance at Krefeld, Parthenius will have to overcome a wide draw in stall 16, but has been given a similar preparation Pastorius, and in what looks an open race, could be worth chancing here.

PREDICTION: PARTHENIUS - BOSCACCIO - EL LOCO - DSCHINGIS SECRET

AUSTRIAN RIDER GOES TOP AFTER BUDAPEST VICTORY

Austrian rider HANA JURANKOVA went to the top of this year’s standings after winning the latest round of the Longines Fegentri World Championship for Lady Riders at the Kincsem Park course in Budapest on Sunday afternoon.

Riding the four year old British-bred filly SONJA for top trainer Sandor Ribarszki, the pair eventually caught home rider Virginia Drexler aboard Navigalo, who at halfway in the 1200 metre contest, looked to have an unassailable lead. However, under top weight, Navigalo faded in the closing stages as Jurankova and Sonja surged clear to win from Birono under Danish rider Sabina Groenback, with Norwegian jockey Silja Storen third aboard Bandavezer.

HEAVY GROUND PREDICTED FOR FEGENTRI HAMBURG RACE

The latest round of the Longines Fegentri World Championship for Gentlemen Riders is due to take place at Hamburg on Saturday as part of the German Derby weekend. However, with heavy rain meaning the abandonment of the raceday at the course on Friday, it remains to be seen if Saturday’s race can go ahead.

If however the green light is given for the race, heavy conditions look to be guaranteed, which would appear to be a problem for several of the runners here. RONNIE ROCKCAKE, the mount of Frenchman Guilain Bertrand, was beaten a long way as odds-on favourite on heavy ground when trained in England, whilst Czech jockey Jindrich Fabris, who has been in excellent form recently, rides another English import, FAZIENDA’S GIRL, who won at Magdeburg in May, but has no good form on soft ground at all.

However, for some contenders, the ground is not the only issue. SPRINGTIME LOVE has some reasonable form of late including a fifrth over Saturday’s course and distance last week, but has to try and carry a mammoth 71 kilos here, whilst the best form of LAUDATION, ridden by Spanish jockey Ignacio Melgarejo Loring, is at shorter distances. MELORIA and LADY JACKIE, the latter of which is partnered here by Italian rider Antonio Ferramosca, are both out of form at present.

Although KIMARA’s three wins were all on good ground, this seven year old mare was a decent fourth over this course and distance on Tuesday in heavy ground. AUENSEE would be a popular winner for German Fegentri rider Vinzenz Schiergen, and has chances here along with OHNE TADEL, who will be ridden here by Philip Scott Sonsteby, and the Norwegian rider looks to be in for a good ride here on a horse with confirmed soft ground form.

However, ADEL VERPFLICHTET won over this course and distance last week in heavy ground proving he can handle these conditions, and can give his owner-trainer-rider Pavel Bradik victory here.

PREDICTION: ADEL VERPFLICHTET - OHNE TADEL - AUENSEE - KIMARA

NO LUCK FOR KAZZIO AS FRENCH RAIDER LANDS EUROPEAN NATIONAL

The Guillaume Macaire-trained LE COSTAUD won the Group 1 European Grand National, the Grande Steeple-Chase D'Europa, sponsored by sportforyou. net, at Merano in Italy on Sunday afternoon.

Having finished in the first two in all nine of his races, Le Costaud, settled in midfield by English jockey James Reveley, surged clear of his rivals in the closing stages for an easy victory ahead of German-trained Kazzio, with Czech raider Alcydon Fan back in third.

However, the result may have been different if Kazzio and jockey Cevin Chan hadn’t been badly impeded during the race. Local hope Little Bruv fell at one of the big hedges in the 4600 metre contest, and with Kazzio and Chan directly behind, it looked as if the pair would be brought down. However, Kazzio’s rider Chan performed nothing short of a minor miracle to keep the combination intact, but they were brought to a practical standstill and lost many lengths due to the incident. The pair somehow managed to run on for second, but whether they would have caught the runaway winner remains to be seen.

    HUNGARIAN DERBY SUCCESS

The Gabor Maronka-trained MERION and Italian jockey ALBERTO SANNA have won this year’s Hungarian Derby at the Kincsem Park course in Budapest today. In a terrific finish, the French-bred Merion, who had finished fifth in the Hungarian 2000 Guineas in May, just got the better of Sarkanyfu under Kazakhstan-born rider Bauyrzhan Murzabayev in a photo finish, with Merzad running on for third ahead of another Maronka-trained runner, favourite Rhodesien Storm.

'I couldn't believe I could win the race at my first attempt, but he's a nice horse', said winning jockey Sanna after the race. 'I rode him before in Budapest, and we got beaten a nose, but I know the horse now, and it was great to win the big race'.

FAVOURITE WINS POLISH DERBY AS BANK MAKES IT NINE

The Adam Wyrzyk-trained CACCINI produced an outstanding turn of foot to win this year’s Polish Derby at the Sluzewiec course in Warsaw this afternoon. Winner of his last four races, Caccini was sent off a hot favourite to make it five in a row, and the French-bred American Post colt didn’t disappoint, surging through the field under Czech jockey Tomas Lukasek to cross the line ahead of Lebowski and Serbian rider Djordje Perovic, with Design running on for third under Russian jockey Alexander Reznikov.

Earlier in the day, last year’s Polish Derby winner VA BANK made it nine wins from nine races when the Irish-bred colt landed the Nagroda Prezesa Totalizatora Sportowego, a Listed contest over 2600 metres.
