DIRECTOR OF SPORT REPORT Lauries Day Thank‐you to everyone in the community who assisted in making Lauries day at Runcorn so special. On numerous occasions throughout the day I was stopped by parents, staff and visiting St. Patrick’s community members acknowledging the positive nature of the day and that the atmosphere around the whole of Runcorn was particularly enjoyable. It was very pleasing to see the community come together. Seeing the younger boys remain behind and cheer on the senior teams was particularly pleasing. It was great to see a large number of people take the opportunity to support ‘Orange Sky Laundry’ that was present.
A huge thank‐you to all of the parents who assisted in the supporter’s canteens and BBQ’s. Thank‐you to all parents for getting boys to photos on time; this assisted greatly in the smooth running of the day. A massive thank‐you to the St. Laurence’s College ground staff who put in a monumental effort to ensure the fields were ready to play at the start of the day and huge amount of work in the clean‐up and pack up of the day. Thank‐you to the College’s sports administration team of Jane Fawcett and Nathan Burgess. The day would not have occurred without their coordination of the communication out and the logistics of the event.
Round 5 Review v St. Patrick’s College Last weekend’s overall results for rugby and football were very good. Both sports finished in front on aggregate games. Football recorded 10 wins and 2 losses and Rugby 7 wins and 5 losses. This shows the continued improvement in rugby with SLC only recording 5 wins against SPC in 2015. Just as impressive was the outstanding results of our non aggregate teams on the weekend. The Year 5 rugby teams recorded some very impressive victories playing some entertaining rugby and our junior footballers are showing some very good skills that will have Lauries football continuing to be dominant in the future. Unfortunately the long bus trip seemed to take its toll on our chess players with 1 win, 1 draw and 3 losses in aggregate competition. It will be important for our chess players to bounce back this week at home.
Round 6 Preview v St. Edmund’s College This weekend a large number of senior teams will be travelling to Ipswich to play St. Edmund’s. Historically this has always been a challenging round for our teams as the distance to travel to the games causes a number of boys to be late or on some occasions not to be able to play at all. Could I please ask that all families travelling to Ipswich look at the draw carefully and allow extra time so that boys arrive early to the venue. The majority of games will be played at the Tivoli Sports Complex (not at St. Edmund’s College).
St. Edmund’s is a fellow Christian Brothers school and always offers great competition. Unfortunately St. Edmund’s do not have Year 5 and 6 students. Therefore this weekend our Year 5 and 6 footballers will play games against Ambrose Treacy while our rugby students will play internal games. There are a number of supplementary games against numerous schools. Please check the schedules thoroughly.
Good Luck to all teams for this weekend.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING REPORT Change is a constant, trite but true! Ultimately your success or failure will depend on how well you manage change. Change by its very nature is uncomfortable. I maintain that those who are best at managing and leading change are comfortable with being uncomfortable all the time. If you can accept that then change is something that you do rather than something that happens to you. Successful athletes realise change is part of the process of continuous improvement. It is being proactive rather reactive. Be a change agent; lead don’t follow. Heed these lines from Bob Dylan’s “The Times They Are A Changing.”
The line it is drawn the curse it is cast The slow one now will later be fast As the present now will later be past
The order is rapidly fadin' And the first one now will later be last For the times they are a' changin'!

RUGBY REPORT Aggregate Update prior to SEC Round:
Current 2016 Aggregate Position: SLC – 4th, SEC – 7th 2015 Aggregate Position: SLC – 2nd, SEC – 6th
Rugby Review vs. St. Patrick’s College
Primary Rugby (contributed by Primary Coordinator Mr. Gavin Hosking) Primary rugby had a very successful weekend with games against SPC and Villanova College. Both the Year 6A and B team had wins in physical games, but with a great skill set these teams were able to move the ball to space and show their dominance out wide. The year 5 teams were the most successful of the weekend with the 5C’s winning a one sided battle 87‐0 whilst the 5B team had a strong win over SPC with Mitch Trenow leading the way. The 5A’s finished the dominance of the year 5 group with a 57‐0 win, with Sam Jones showing his brilliant skills. Well done to all Primary teams.
Secondary Rugby Laurie’s had another strong weekend of results against St Patrick’s, winning 7 of the 12 games in Aggregate. Special congratulations again go to the Second XV, 16A, 9A, 9B and 7A teams, for remaining undefeated in their Aggregate premierships, as we enter the final two weeks of the season.
First XV Review The Men in Black were left to rue a very slow first half, trailing 21 to nil at the break. In the Second Half, SLC fired up, scoring the first points of the half through Lachlan MacElroy charging down a kick and leading the charge to put Lauries on the board. St Pat’s responded with a try of their own, before Billy Rutherford used his vision to pounce for the final try in the final play of the game. The boys won the Second Half 12‐7, but need to put a 70‐minute performance together this week to knock off St Edmund’s, away. Laurie’s best player was the tireless Will Bailey!

Rugby Assemblies
Last Friday Last Friday, 1995 First XV player and Head of Primary Mr. Cameron Wigan addressed the boys in relation to what the Black Jersey meant to him and still does to this day; offering insights to the boys about approaching challenges head on and embracing the opportunities to learn whilst supporting the teams of Lauries’ brothers. “Lauries Legends” was also introduced – a trivia that will commence in coming weeks on Sloodle based on current results and Lauries Rugby History – to be played for Rebel Sport vouchers.
Note: NO MORE MORNING TEA RUGBY ASSEMBLIES THIS TERM BECAUSE OF LIZID MUSIC FESTIVAL AND SENIOR BLOCK EXAMS. WE WILL HAVE A BUMPER ‘FINAL EDITION’ EARLY IN TERM 3

FOOTBALL REPORT Aggregate Update prior to SEC Round:
Current 2016 Aggregate Position: SLC – 1st, SEC – 5th 2015 Aggregate Position: SLC – 1st, SEC – 6th
What a great day out at Runcorn last Saturday proved to be, with not only a vibrant atmosphere around the grounds but plenty of positive results to reward our boys for their efforts.
The Primary School sector was a highly competitive affair with 3 wins, a draw and four losses on the day. Some memorable moments from the matches were a goal scored directly from a corner through Ned Naouri in the 6A game while Riley Falkner put in a superb effort in attack for the 6B’s. Will Davis was also outstanding for the 6C’s in defence.
All the planets aligned and the 7A’s recorded their first win of the season following two tightly fought draws in successive weeks. Oscar Zubeldia scored all four goals in their 4‐0 victory in what was an incredible individual effort, backed up by another clean sheet for the third game in a row.
The 8A’s continued their march towards the top of the table with a resounding 5‐0 win. A hat‐trick to Harrison Pegg and another brace to Ethan Lias ensured complacency didn’t strike as the team now eye off a potential top two spot in their highly competitive division. Likewise, their 8B counterparts are hitting form with another solid victory, courtesy of four goals from in‐form striker Collins James. After a slow start to the season, the B’s have rebounded strongly to come charging home for a late crack at the title.
A midweek match against Ambrose Treacy College for both the 7A and 8A sides will provide some further match practice before we welcome St Edmund’s to Runcorn this coming Saturday.
Our Year 9A and B teams continued their exceptional season winning 7‐0 and 7‐2 respectively. A huge game this weekend for our 9B team, if they draw the game, they could possibly end up tying the premiership, an outright win would secure the trophy – kick off is at 9:30am on field 2 at Tivoli, good luck gentleman and Mr Wilson.
The 10A’s unfortunately conceded a goal in the final kick of the first half to lose a competitive match against the likely premiership holders St. Patrick’s, the match ending 0‐1. Conversely, the 10B’s won their match with the final kick of the game when Jackson Underwood (also man of the match) was put through on goal to calmly place his shot with the outside of his right foot into the bottom right corner.
The Fourth XI need to win their final two matches of the season to guarantee the premiership and a win for the thirds this Saturday would see the team crowned champions – Third XI KO time is 11:45 on Field 2 at Tivoli. Both teams contain a number of boys from Year 11 which should put us in good stead for next year as well. The Second XI continued their revitalised second half of the season with a solid 4‐1 win against tough opposition.
We look forward to seeing as many of our students and supporters around the grounds in what will be the penultimate weekend of SLC football for 2016. For all in the SLC community out at Ipswich on Saturday, feel free to get behind our 9B’s and Third XI especially, as they aim to win an AIC premiership. We wish all students the very best as they continue their participation and enjoyment of the World Game.

St Laurence’s played against St Pat’s on Friday afternoon but unfortunately lost overall. The 1st IV’s were defeated. The Senior A team won and the Senior B’s drew. The intermediate teams also lost. Special mention to Callum Macfarlane and Bryan Tong for their persistence and skill in winning both of their games. Better luck for games in future competition.
This Friday we play St Edmund’s at home for round 6 of the competition. All boys are reminded they are to meet outside the Sport’s office at 3:05pm. Parents should be able to pick up their boys at approximately 6.00pm.

CROSS COUNTRY REPORT
Session Attendance and the ‘Fearful Plateau’: Session attendance is a key measure we’re using to monitor progress throughout this season. Although simple, it provides a useful indication for how the entire squad is tracking on a weekly basis. The Under 14s are leading the way with 131 sessions attended by their Age Group so far. This hard work deserves a pat on the back, however it’s the ‘fearful plateau’ sneaking up that our team needs to be mindful of. The ‘fearful plateau’ that creeps up slowly across exams. The ‘fearful plateau’ that encompasses the 3 weeks of holidays. It provides an easy excuse not to show up to training. You must look within, you must look to your team mates, you have a decision to make. You’ve had a good start, yes, but will you succumb? The ‘fearful plateau’ separates the contenders from the pretenders come AIC time.
Mt Coot‐tha next Wednesday 8th June: We’re taking a select group of 20 boys out to Mt Coot‐tha next Wednesday (8th June) to run around the ‘Brissy’ famous running loops. This will be a gruelling session we’ll start doing every 2 weeks and is a great addition to the program this year. A reminder, those boys who have returned permission forms need to meet down at the bus straight after school. The bus will depart at 3.05pm and return back to the College at 5.15pm (dependent on traffic). No Primary Cross Country Training this Friday 3rd June: There is no primary Cross Country training on this Friday 3rd of June due to other Year 5 and 6 school involvements. Look forward to seeing primary back at next Monday’s afternoon training. How can I get Involved? If boys are interested in becoming involved, come along to training and speak to your age group coordinator listed below. They will help your son set up his own training journal through which we can monitor his progression. The first couple of weeks have been a tough introduction to volume and hills.
