In the last 10 years, the TV set has gone from being big boxes full of outdated analogue technology to sleek slim panels. Doomsayers complained about the reliability of new technologies, but now companies like Panasonic are quoting return rates of 1 unit in 1000! In fact, in informal discussions, Panasonic recently claimed that the last dead pixel was in June or July 2008! So, plasma burn, dead pixels and dimming backlights are either a myth or a thing of the past. It’s fair to say that flat screen technology has matured, prices are low and we probably have never had it so good.

The Market in 20092009 will bring mixed results for the TV market. Unfortunately, we will have less choice. Many significant players pulled domestic TVs out of the Aussie market like Fujitsu (2008), Hitachi (2008), Philips (2008), NEC (2009), Pioneer (2009), while others are struggling, with Pebble (known for Conia, Hicon, Konka) going into administration. Many have speculated about the big 4 TV market, comprising of only LG, Samsung, Panasonic and Sony! These predictions are starting to look more credible!

WintalIs it farewell to Wintal LCD TVs? The short answer is no. With the withdrawal of NEC and with financially wobbly Chinese brands, Wintal TV sales are up nearly 80% in February. Through perhaps a stroke of luck, Wintal share many of the components with the NECs, which is good news for the commercial jobs. With Chinese brands offering such poor service levels, the market is once again paying a small premium for the superior product support. We expect continued demand for Wintal LCD panels.

PanasonicBy April, we’ll see Panasonic adopt energy rating on their TVs. The first TVs are rumoured to have 3 stars, which is a significant improvement on current models. This will be achieved through physically thinner panels that are perhaps half the thickness of current panels. They will also be made from

100% recyclable material. By November, Panasonic are even rumoured to halve the panel thickness again, reducing costs of materials, transport and price. They believe that plasma will continue for a good 7 years. Apparently the biggest performance breakthroughs on their panels will be ‘depth perception’. Panasonic claims that pictures will almost look 3 dimensional!

SamsungTalking about 3D, Samsung also recently displayed the ‘3D ready’ PAVV Cannes 42” and 50” plasmas. They are rumoured to be cooperating with Electronic Arts and Hollywood Studios for 3D computer games and movies. Samsung are also including the DLNA (digital living network alliance) port on many panels. Via windows media player, users will have access to the photos, videos and music that’s stored on their PCs. These TVs will also be able to display internet related material, like news and weather.

SonySony, like Panasonic, are achieving lower energy usage and better performance. While Panasonic are only managing to produce 37” LCD TVs in 2008 and a rumoured 42” LCD TV this year, Sony has backed LCD technology through and through. One significant change has been the backlight technology. Sony are now pursuing LED technology, which will be the backbone to improved energy efficiency and visual performance.

SD, HD, 3D?So, fast forward 5 to 10 years. People ask about Plasma TV, LCD, OLED, laser TV, and holographic TV! The nuts and bolts seem uncertain, but industry tends to agree, the next breakthrough is 3D TV. No glasses, just Star Wars like R2D2 3D viewing!
