Yesterday saw 712 Brownies and Cubs from around Berkshire descend upon WINGS2014. The Brownies and Cubs excitedly gathered in The

Squircle for an Opening Ceremony, after which they were sent off to ‘Discover WINGS’ - a treasure hunt on a similar basis to the Wing It! challenge.

Abigail, Emily and Charlotte from 4th Ascot Brownies said: “We’re so excited to be here! We all have sisters in 2nd Ascot Guides and we wanted to come with them.” Abigail added: “At the next WINGS we will all be here with Guides but I’m not sure if it will be exciting or scary to be here without my Mum or Dad.”

Over lunch, the Brownies and Cubs gathered back in The Squircle for the Big Brownie Birthday Party to celebrate 100 years of Brownies. The Brownies are celebrating throughout 2014 - Berkshire Brownies have already attended ‘Starquest’, a county celebration and 8th Earley Brownies are having a party on a narrow boat on the Thames.

Bo, 9, 1st Earley, said: “I loved the birthday party as there was lots of cake - I love cake!” Iga and Rhiannon, 1st Cowpot Brownies, said: “The party was fantastic and we loved dancing!”

The Brownies are also working towards their Birthday Challenge badge where they have to complete a number of challenges based on the different years Brownies has existed.

Lucy from 1st Cold Ash Brownies said: “I love earning badges! I’ve got 32 so far and I’ve got another one today.”

During the afternoon the Brownies and Cubs visited; Perform It!, Fling It!, and the World Fair. Keavey from 1st Cold Ash Brownies said: “I’ve loved doing all the activities! I’ve loved meeting new people! I’ve loved spending time with my friends! In fact I’ve loved everything about today!”

The Brownies and Cubs were hosted for tea by groups around the site. Oliver from 1st Thatcham Scout Group said: “I enjoyed having our tea with the Scouts but when I come and stay at WINGS I don’t want to do the cooking!”

To finish off their day the Brownies and Cubs headed to the main arena to watch WINGS Got Talent before heading home.

When asked their favourite part of the day; Oliver from 1st Thatcham said: “I really loved the circus skills activity - I definitely liked the stilts!” Ella from 1st Hurst and Amy from 1st Twyford said: “We really loved WINGS Got Talent!” Matthew from 1st Thatcham said: “WINGS Got Talent was amazing I hope they have that next time so I can take part!”

It started as a twister board but became even more epic as it inspired the ‘Legendary Heart’! A wooden heart has

been created by Phil and his team to say thank you and to highlight the amazing work of all the volunteers and staff who make up the Legends sub camp. Anyone who is a volunteer with a yellow neckerchief is eligible to add their signature to this heart, which is being passed around the site throughout the week. Towards the end of WINGS2014 it is being put on display for everyone to see before being presented to a worthy individual.

this week. So much so that she has now signed her son up to join a local group.

Survive It!

A short coach trip away is Splash It! Two fantastic zones of watery adventure. A wet and wild experience of canoeing, water fights, bell boating, katakanoeing,

raft building and more.

“We started a water fight,” said Mari from Norway, “And the boys tried to join in”. Karen, 11, said: “We had loads of fun and there was lots of screaming as the boys tried to splash us.”

Further round the lake Alex, 12, from 1st Danebank Scouts has been strutting his dance moves afloat. “When bell boating I did the Macarena while the rest of my group carried on, there

were giggles from the girls,” said Alex. Becky, 12, from 1st Earley Guides said: “Bell boating was fun as we got to splash around, we all got wet as we crowded round each other.”

Chris, Jack and Owen from 1st Burghfield and Sullhampstead found themselves Katakanoeing and bellowed: “It’s awesome,” they exclaimed “we are so looking forward to being on the water.”

Will, 11, from 27th Plymouth Scouts and Explorers was out rafting with his ironing board doing some extreme Ironing.He detailed: “It’s lovely to be able to do housework and have fun at the same time.”

Live It! is a fantastic opportunity to try your hand at something new and explore new life skills. Plumbing, tiling, paving and car maintenance are all on offer.

The base also provides the opportunity for you to learn how to iron a shirt safely, a key skill for future job interviews. An activity focusing on personal protection and first aid is all about learning skills to not only help during an incident but to ensure your own safety is paramount too.

The Daily Brew caught up with Cameron from 10th Belfast as he was changing his first tyre. He was surprised at how easy

it was once he had been taught. Tesni, Kennet Vale Rangers, had her first experience of car maintenance and managed to pop the bonnet, check the oil and change a tyre. She was impressed that she managed to complete the tasks and how small things like checking oil take no time but could save your life.

Charlotte and Eleana, 39th Northampton Guides, have been thinking about household budgeting. Although they had a good idea of rent costs, they had underestimated on household bills and were surprised to be left with as little as £12 at the end of the month for socialising! "It's ridiculous, rent is so expensive and only leaves you with £60 for non essentials!"

Survive It! is a zone jam packed with adventurous activities such as shooting, archery, outdoor cooking, pioneering and shelter building and much more.

In Survive It! Hannah really enjoyed the dodge ball with buckets and bean bags. Hannah’s friend Caitlin said, smiling: “We won against the English Scouts.” Afterwards Hannah went off to make paracord bracelets.

The Survive It! zone offers young people the chance to learn about firearms, their safe operation and application.

Caitlin, 17, from Fochabers in Scotland had the opportunity to use a firearm for the first time at the zone: “I tried shooting for the first time I was a bit shaky to start with, but eventually I got it,” she said.

On the way back to camp from the Survive It! zone, the Scouts bumped into a famous horse rider: “We met Mary King, one of the Olympic Horse Riders, en route to Survive It!, we said hi and started chatting to her about horses.”

It’s great to see our neigh...bours enjoying WINGS2014 too.

How will you Remember WINGS2014?

Frederika from the Legends sub camp has bought images from the first ever World Scout Jamboree. Her father’s photo album from the

1930’s show Scouts cycling to the camp and meeting Lord Baden Powell.

Eighty years after the event, Frederika’s photos show how Scouting and Guiding has both moved with the times and yet stayed true to its values of fun, challenge and adventure.

What will your memories from WINGS2014 look like in eighty years? How are you recording all your and new experiences, discoveries and friendships? Frederika looks at her father’s photo album and says: “Scouting is often timeless and these are my memories.”

Austrian Adventure

Chris Shaw, a Scout Leader from Austria is offering an amazing opportunity to connect your group with Scouts from Austria and to visit a Scout

campsite just a 20 minute drive from Salzburg.

Scout Camp Austria is situated at the gate of the Salzkammergut area full of breathtaking mountains and lakes. The 50,000 m2 site hosts three well-equipped buildings for indoor accommodation and offers on-site activities such as high ropes, archery and pioneering, as well as offsite water activities and bike hire.

WINGS Got Talent!With a strong crowd of 3000 including the Cubs and

Brownies from Wings on Wednesday the atmosphere was electric in front of the main stage. Excited fans

of the sub camp heats were out in force to support their favourite acts. Throughout the week hopefuls have been performing their hearts out so they could secure their place in the WINGS Got Talent final.

Ten acts staged a range of sensational performances and battled it out to take the coveted WINGS Got Talent 2014 crown, but only one act could be crowned the ultimate winner. Izzy, 12, wowed the crowd with Adele, ‘Make You Feel My Love’. The crowd went wild, screaming and cheering helping Izzy to win via the state of the art clap-o-meter.

Speaking after the show Izzy said: “I can’t believe it! I didn’t think I would win this as there were so many good acts. It’s been really fun seeing everyone up on stage”. Izzy enthused I’m completely over whelmed by how much everyone was screaming and shouting for me”. Asking how they will use their talent in the future Izzy continued: “I would love to be on Br `oadway.”

Really Inclusive?With society constantly adapting and growing to suit the

enormous variety of cultures, religions and classes around the world, are Guides and Scouts keeping up with the changes?

The Isle of Man Guides think that events like WINGS2014 are the best way to learn about different cultures: “We’ve made friends with so many international people here and now we realise that we’re all the same”, they said: “At events everyone can get involved equally”.

Wokingham District Explorers think that despite the widely held belief that Scouting and Guiding are predominately Christian based they said: “We as young people and leaders make it inclusive”. 1st Ventnor Guides told us how they have culture themed evenings to learn about the traditions and history of worldwide Guiding.

“We have recently tried origami for our Japanese evening, a fashion show of Guide uniforms in history and a French evening,” they said. Meeting

other international young people has allowed them to compare badges and uniforms and learn about how they live.

Harrison, Zac and Daniel from 2nd Crowthorne think that although Scouting is supposedly inclusive of everyone, it is mainly the richer countries that can afford to promote it. They therefore have a brilliant idea to encourage more young people from poverty stricken third world countries to join Scouts and Guides: “We would love to create a charity and fundraise to send poorer children to Scouts and Guides so they can have fun too”, they said.

Olivia and Marina from Spain have loved being at WINGS2014. They told us that although their culture and ways of Scouting and Guiding are completely different, they have felt included throughout their time in the UK so far.

Barbara and Nina from 2nd High Wycombe Trinity Guides, explained how in order to include all cultures and religions in their area they have two Scout

units, one of which is a successful Muslim group. Guides welcome young girls of any belief into their unit, although it is not as popular as the Scouts due to the idea of Muslim girls having many religious rules they must follow, which makes it harder for them to join in with meetings. All of their church parades are optional, so regardless of ethnic beliefs no young person is excluded.”

Nina went on to tell us how proud she was of the Muslim Scouts who attended the St. Georges Parade, “We said both promises which catered for everybody and made all feel welcome”. Moreover, Barbara described the idea of ‘Holiday Guiding’, a local grant-funded initiative in High Wycombe to give underprivileged kids the opportunity to experience Brownies and Guides during the school holidays and ultimately encourage them into Guiding. “We don’t want anyone to miss out on the fun!”

Finally, 2nd Newbury Senior Section concluded with the quote, “Let’s get everyone involved all over the world. Camps bring people together and we can learn from each other and take back experiences to tell others”.

Getting the YIST of it

Behind the scenes, thousands of staff and leaders have made WINGS2014 possible and the success it is.

But, did you know, there are nearly 50 young people aged between 14-18 who also help make the event possible, as part of the YIST (Young International Service Team) programme.

These volunteers have given up their time to experience being a staff member on an international camp, and are embedded in teams across the site - except cleaning the loos - we’ll forgive them for not wanting to do that!

Nicky, one of the YIST leaders, said: “We’ve had fantastic reports from everyone across the site. They’ve got on with everyone, and the feedback has been amazing.”

“Activities and teams have been so kind about the YIST and every single YIST has been extremely starfish.”

Nicky assures us they’ll know what that means - but it definitely sounds good to us. Brendan, another of the team, added: “They’ve done a brilliant job, and it’s great to have so many happy smiley people around WINGS2014.”

Невідомі люди - справедливо чи ні - борються за владу, домінування, і зверхність. WINGS ставить обличчя та імена невинних людей, що опинилися під перехресним вогнем війни далеко від них; дружба створюються без бар'єрів бою. "Ми дійсно не знаємо, що відбувається в Україні", говорить 12-річна Настя. "Ми маємо повернутися до школи у вересні, але наші вчителі кажуть, що це неможливо зробити до жовтня. І це якщо пощастить" Коли група знову летить в суботу, не всі з семи учасників будуть повертатися додому. 15-річна Ксенія пояснює: "Моя мати сказала мені залишитися з бабусею в більш безпечній центральній Україні, доки бойові дії не закінчаться. Це змушує мене плакати

EurobeatTonight, the cast of Eurobeat – Almost Eurovision,

will hit the stage of WINGS2014, fresh from their run at The Wilde Theatre in nearby Bracknell. Performing songs and dance from the show, which is a tribute to Europe’s premiere dodgy music competition, EBOS Musical Theatre are encouraging everyone to practice their flag waving, foot stomping, and toe tapping in preparation. Set in the city of Sarajevo, hosts Sergei and Boyka will lead you through a journey from mundane to extreme, and camp to cheesy, as the cast of eighteen entertain you. With audience participation aplenty, and an array of musical delights, and potentially disasters from across the Eurozone, you’ll be screaming at the stage, or rolling around on the floor with metaphorical delight.

Olga, a Guide leader from Alchevsk in south-eastern Ukraine, speaks with tenderness as she describes the troubles of the conflict back home.

“Half a year has passed and the fighting is staying the same.”

For many, the Ukraine crisis is just another war in another distant land. Anonymous individuals are – rightly or wrongly – contending for power, dominance, and supremacy. WINGS2014 puts faces and names to the innocent people caught in the crossfire of a war far out of their hands; friendships are formed without the barriers of battle.

“We don’t really know what is happening in Ukraine”, says 12-year-old Nastya. “We are meant to be going back to school in September, but our teachers say it will not start up again until October – and that is if we are lucky.”

When the group flies back on Saturday, not all of the seven Guides will be going home. Ksenya, 15, explains: “My mother has told me to stay with my grandmother [in safer

central Ukraine] until the fighting is finished.” Poignantly, the Guide adds: “It makes me want to cry sometimes.”Olga attended WINGS2009 where she met Jenny Miller, Group Scout Leader at 84th Reading (1st Earley St Peter’s) Scout Group. In the years that followed, the pair continued to communicate via email, and Jenny supported Olga in bringing her Guide group to this year’s camp.

Providing Home Hospitality before WINGS2014 began, the Scout Group took the Guides for an afternoon at Brighton Beach, on a coach visit to Stonehenge, and for a day to see the sights of London. Mary, 12, says animatedly that they saw “the London Eye, Big Ben, Tower Bridge, and St Paul’s”, and that they’re looking forward to seeing Windsor Castle when they do Hike It! tomorrow.

Olga underlined her thanks: “We’re very, very, very grateful to Reading for providing us with equipment, telling us so many stories, and taking us on various interesting excursions.” WINGS2014 has provided some extent of holiday for the Ukranian Guides, although they have

been in regular communication with London and Kiev. “Our Archaeology sub camp leader helps us a lot. She permits us free mobile-phone charging so we can call the Embassy.”

Ksenya appears to have gained the most from WINGS2014. “I have never seen any camp like this. I’ve never spoken to so many people from so many different countries. It is very useful to me... I want to work as a translator.” Her English is indeed exceptional; the result of working hard and taking lessons since nursery.

This is the true power of WINGS. It goes unnoticed by some but it’s obvious if one only looks for it. The camp gives young people the opportunity to develop their ambitions, foster their hopes, and realise their dreams. They don’t want the politics. They just want the peace. As the Reading–Alchevsk connection proves, the Scouting and Guiding movements can genuinely provide that.
