Thank you to everyone who showed up to fill sandbags early on a Saturday morning. We have since had a new survey done, and we will continue to monitor and adjust our plans as the water does whatever the water is going to do. (Fingers crossed.)

July brings more fun and excitement around the club with more sailing, the bouncy float, more sailing, and beach time-if the water EVER warms up! Be safe and keep an eye on the little ones. They may not know if they’ve been in the cold water too long. Good luck to our crews that may be off to travel this month; Chicago-Mac, Port Huron-Mac, Ugotta, and others. Fly that GTYC burgee high. We will be cheering you on.

The participation on Wednesday nights continues to grow, and competition is heating up. It is great to see so many boats out there.

Board nominations are fast approaching, so think about if you or someone you know may want a turn driving this ship. Please remember that our staff and volunteer board are working hard to keep the club enjoyable for all. As things get busy, be patient and try that outside bar.

Cheers,Liz

In My Free TimeLiz Zimmerman

So, lots of people ask me “What do you do when you aren’t at GTYC.” So, first of all, lately I’ve been at the club A LOT. But, yes I am not employed right now. My background is Elementary Education and I taught in many different capacities for several years. I’ve worked for a land conservancy, a book review service, a ski shop, ski coaching, several retail businesses, tutored, and in my early days several summers of restaurant work. For a few years I was a Quality Control Manager for a manufacturing business that Scot and I owned. I have spent much of my time volunteering for the ski and sailing programs around town, helping to organize ski races, regattas, fundraisers, and more. And about 4 times a year I have a book supplier that donates upwards of 600 children’s books and I distribute them all around the area to various schools, daycare, shelters, and other places a kid might like to read a book.

One of my favorite volunteer “jobs” is Wildflower Rescue. A group from the Leelanau Conservancy is invited to locations where landowners will be building, or putting in a driveway or logging trees, and we dig out any native wildflowers and ferns that we can and sell them for the benefit of the Leelanau Conservancy each spring. You may notice the GTYC landscaping has some Trillium, Jack-in-the-Pulpit, and Black-eyed-Susans. Several years ago I did a rescue dig and brought some plants back for the club. They have done very well, and have spread nicely. You may even notice there is a rare “Red Trillium” in there. And just to clarify, yes, Trillium are a protected Michigan wildflower. It is illegal to pick them or take them from park land, but transplanting them with permission from the landowner is legal.

PLEASE NOTE: Some of our members are anxious to help weed the garden, and we very much appreciate the participation. However, we currently have Common Milkweed growing along the path and this is a very important plant to the Monarch butterfly community. Please do not pull or cut the Milkweed.

Thank you, Chauncy.

Ask Aunt WauneenaAunt Wauneena

Dear Aunt Wauneena, Do you have any Greg Diehl links for us this month? Signed, What’s the Diehl.

Dear WTD, It’s kind of a Cherry Festival theme this month. We received one story from Greg about a boat rage incident on Lake St. Clair with a video of a drunk in an aluminum boat. Eric Lind sent us another one about a drunk homeless man making off with someone’s sailboat.https://wwjnewsradio.radio.com/articles/boat-rage-incident-captured-macomb-county-shocking-raw-video

Not to be confused with the previous stories, here are some Chicago-Mac/Bayview-Mac links to our GTYC yachts:

Eric also sent us a note on the passing of John Ball.

REAKING NEWS – from the IOR days (Invest Or Retire) of the late 70s and early 80s comes news that John Ball has crossed the bar. John was active in the Traverse City sailing scene, most notably as a member of the Reef Petroleum team sailing Gusher, Discovery, and Fast Half. He also helped organize the Sail Plan Symposiums in ’79, ’80, and ’81 which brought many top names in the sport to Traverse City. No obituary or details available at this time.

Thank-you past commodores. AW
