The Lockdown Issue

Quarantine Haikus

The Lockdown Issue6Photography CompetitionsWe set our pupils, parents and staff weekly photography competitions with various themes. Inside this issue, we have included a small selection of the best submissions and we announce the winners.

10Haiku Challenge

Whilst we were unable to have all our pupils in school, we decided to

challenge them in creating Haikus to capture their experiences

throughout their time at home.

30#gettymuseumchallenge

In the early days of quarantine, the Getty Museum in LA challenged the world to

recreate their favourite artwork at home. This of course captured the imagination of

our pupils, and they did not disappoint.

Since writing the introduction to the last DesignEd at Easter, just at the point where we went into lockdown, our school communities have risen magnificently to the extraordinary challenges that the national emergency has presented. The logistical, emotional and cultural challenges have been immense, and we are proud as a Trust of the way our schools have supported our pupils and families in these unprecedented times. Many in our communities have suffered bereavement. May I express my sincere condolences to all those who have suffered loss.

Our staff and governors have proved resilient and agile in responding to what has had to be dealt with, and feedback from our parents has been overwhelmingly positive. Leaders have overseen the rapid closure of schools, moving rapidly to enable home learning. Our schools have remained open for key worker children throughout the period, including provision throughout the holidays as staff have committed to ‘doing their bit’ to support the response to the national emergency. We have responded to the government request for wider opening from June 1st wholeheartedly with, for instance, our secondary schools providing provision well beyond the request for Year 10 students to have at least one face-to-face interaction. Parents have shown faith in the efforts to do this safely, with nearly 90% of students at Arrow Vale, as one example, attending sessions. Leaders are now planning for full and safe re-opening of our schools in September, which we are on track to achieve. It will be wonderful to be able to welcome all of the children back.

This unique edition of DesignEd, ‘The Lockdown Issue’ celebrates the creativity of the young people in our schools during lockdown. There are also photographs submitted by parents and staff. Adversity sparks innovation and creativity. If a picture tells a thousand words, then there are many thousands of words within this edition, which is unusually word free. The Trust-wide photography competitions, poetry, journal keeping and art work are all showcased in this one-off edition. I hope you feel their wonderful work captures some of the mood of lockdown. These are dark times, but hopefully the contents of this edition will bring a ray of light.

Thank you to each and every member of our school communities for the support you have shown our schools. It has never been more needed and appreciated! Stay safe this summer.

A picture says a thousand words

We know how much our pupils, parents and staff like to take pictures on their phones. We thought that lockdown would be an excellent time for everyone to showcase their creativity and photographic skills. We set four challenges, each with a different theme; through the window, illusions, capture the moment and selfies. We asked each academy to submit their entries during quarantine. We have been blown away with the imagination and quality of the work, and privileged to be given a glimpse into their home lives.

“Take a photograph through a window, open or shut, from inside looking out, or from outside looking in. You can include objects on a windowsill or a person or even a pet. Use your imagination, be creative and have some fun!”

WEEK ONE WINNERS

First Place: Aishah, KS2

St Stephens CE RSA Academy

“This uplifting photograph

communicates the shared

experience of support for

the NHS during the Covid-19

lockdown. The beautifully painted

rainbow on the hand, a joyous

smile and a balanced composition

makes this a well-deserved first

prize winner.”

Third Place: Sophie, KS2 “Freedom”

Ipsley CE RSA Academy

“A sense of freedom is truly felt in this image. The

leaping figure photographed crossing the road through

a car window creates a strong composition and a

unique viewpoint. The selected colours and tones

remind us of the challenge of lockdown and creates a

powerful image. A striking third prize winner.”

Second Place: Layla, KS3

Church Hill Middle School RSA Academy

“Capturing this incredible sunset with its fiery colour

palette from inside a rainy window has created a

bold and striking photograph. The silhouette of

the landscape makes this a poetic reflection of the

lockdown experience. Using the pattern of raindrops

made this the leader of a very strong collection

of landscape photographs and a worthy 2nd prize

winner.”

“An illusion is something that tricks us into seeing something differently than it actually exists. Photography is often used to make illusions. The challenge for this week’s competition is to create your own illusion. You can use objects, buildings, toys, mirrors or even the weather. Play with scale, angles and close ups! There are no limits! Use your imagination and have lots of fun!”

The use of the dinosaur toy against

the pre-historic landscape and use

of the setting sun creates a prize

Second Place: Oliver KS4

Arrow Vale RSA Academy

“This talented photographer cleverly plays with scale to

create this fascinating landscape illusion. The textures,

composition and colour create interest and room for

interpretation.”

Third Place: Zofia KS2

St Stephens CE RSA Academy

“The striking viewpoint makes this a worthy prize

winner. The powerful composition and quiet colour

palette creates a wonderful image.”

“This week’s theme is ‘Capture the Moment’. A photograph allows you to instantly capture a moment in time. Over the next week, try to capture a poignant moment in time. This could involve: a celebration, a cooking mishap, a reflection of lockdown, what is going on outside your window, how you feel or a funny moment!”

Week Three Winners

First Place: Charlie, KS4

RSA Academy Tipton

“The prize-winning image demonstrates

skilful selection of colours, tones and

imagery to create this striking and

dramatic photograph. The maturity of

the composition and the intensity of the

image made this image stand out against

our other winners.”

Second Place: Kiera, KS2

Arrow Vale RSA Academy

“A strong composition of figures in the landscape

captures the moment of friends ‘social distancing’ in

the park. This second prize winner strongly reflects the

times we are in now.”

Third Place: Ella, KS4

Church Hill Middle School RSA Academy

“This emotive image cleverly captures the beautiful

sunset against the motion of travelling in the car. The

moment is poetically seen through the lens of the

camera.”

“There are many examples of photographic selfies in which the subject’s face is obscured. This effect is a special feature of photography that doesn’t occur so much in painting. The camera flattens three-dimensional space so that something in the foreground can appear to be on the same level as something else in the background. Using either make-up, costumes, props or objects, create a selfie with all or part of your face obscured. Be creative and have fun!”

The world is an ever-changing place; for some this pandemic and quarantine will be the most significant change they have ever experienced. We asked our pupils, parents and staff to reflect on the world and what it means to them and express their thoughts in the form of a Haiku.

The ancient form of Japanese poetry is made up of a simple structure based on the number of syllables in each line - 5,7,5 and limited to three lines. Rarely do they have a title and are often based around nature or a moment in time.

Here are just a few examples of the great work sent in. Well done to everyone who took part. Now you know how it’s done, maybe you could teach someone else and find out what the world means to them.

#GETTYMUSEUMCHALLENGEIf photography and poetry weren’t enough to challenge our community, we decided to test them further with our version of the #gettymuseumchallenge.

The Getty Museum in Los Angeles, USA created the hashtag #gettymuseumchallenge, and people from all over the world took to Twitter and Instagram with their version of classic artworks using items from around their homes.

We had some great pictures sent in from everyone, again here is just a small selection. Thank you for all your entries and great work!
