Welcome to our latest edition of Kaba Connect. It is hard to believe that we have already passed the half-way point of 2013. We have spent the first half of this year busy with projects and events, making the year flash by. We have been involved in a number of interesting projects this year. With such a selection to choose from, we decided on sharing two of the most interesting, with Kaba products being involved in the construction of two data storage centres – Digital Realty in Melbourne and a centre currently under construction in Sydney. We have also been through the major part of the 2013 trade show season and you will find images and information on the events we have attended within the following pages.

In product news, we introduce the new Kaba Visitor and Contractor Management Kiosk and become acquainted with the fantastic Ilco Engrave It PRO. To round out this edition, our regular ‘Have you met…’ segment takes a closer look at the architectural side of the Kaba Australia business with an interview with Evan Williams, Architectural Sales Representative extraordinaire. We hope you enjoy our Kaba Connect magazine; we certainly enjoy bringing it to you.

Digital Realty entrusts Kaba with securing their latest facility

5KABA Connect Issue 7

Digital Realty is the world’s largest data storage provider, with over 1.9 million square metres of data centre space held across 110 properties.

Their latest addition is a new facility in Melbourne Victoria, which provides 3,480m2 of white space within a purpose-built 8,690m2 building. Situated 20 minutes for Melbourne’s central business district, the facility will cater to major Melbourne clients predominantly within the information technology and financial services sectors.

With clients including major banks, it is essential that Digital Realty have a high level of security for their building. Security measures include cameras, access control systems, onsite security personnel and Kaba Entrance Control Systems.

Kaba installed two PIL-C01 personal interlocks and a HSG-01E half height sensor gate to the facility. The half-height sensor gate is located in the foyer area, requiring visitors to register with security to gain access to the site, while also preventing unauthorised access. The two personal interlocks have been installed at the entranceways to each of the data halls to control the access to these high security areas.

The Kaba PIL-C01 is a SCEC endorsed, fully automatic personal interlock designed to meet the highest security demands and provide optimal protection for sensitive areas of a building, including data storage areas.

Restricted site access becomes a reality for Cockram Constructions

7KABA Connect Issue 7

Cockram Constructions has been part of the Australian building industry since 1861. For over 150 years, Cockram Constructions has been involved in the completion of landmark buildings across Australia.

With a rich history and strong reputation behind them, Cockram Construction has recently expanded operations into Asia and the Americas, making them a global construction business.

One of Cockram Constructions latest project is a 26,000 square metre data storage centre being built within close proximity to Sydney’s central business district. Given the sensitivity of such a site, and the size of Cockram’s workforce – 400 personnel and approximately 3,000 subcontractors – controlling site access was a critical factor in maintaining site safety and security.

To this end, Kaba installed two FTS- E03 Full Height Turnstiles, operated by Kaba’s Exos Access Control System. The result is a secure construction site, where access control credentials are required to gain access via the turnstiles. The Kaba Exos system is also online, giving full and real time visibility to live data on the activity of each turnstile and the ability

to control the time frames in which they will function as well as the ability to lock them down or allow free egress in the case of an emergency.

Kaba Australia’s new visitor and contractor management kiosk allows all visitors to digitally sign in at the company they are visiting. The kiosk has them enter their details, that is, name and company and then the details of who they are visiting. The kiosk then notifies the person responsible for the visitor via email and text message. Then kiosk then holds the visitor’s details as active until they sign out upon exit.

The kiosk is very simple to operate and steps a visitor through the process with clear instructions. The software needed to enable visitor management can be supplied by Kaba as part of our Kaba Kiosk package. As well as allowing for sign in and out, the software enables you to produce an audit trail to show who has been signing in and out and when.

To learn more about how the Kaba Visitor and Contract Management Kiosk can improve the efficiency of your reception area, please call 1300 728 088.

Security 2013The largest trade show for the security industry was held for the last time at its current venue in Darling Harbour. Running from 24th to 26th July, the event provided the perfect platform to show current and prospective customers our full range of products as well as giving us the opportunity to catch up with peers from within the industry.

As always, we found the event to be a worthwhile investment and we look forward to heading off to Melbourne next year for Security 2014.

Events

Security in Government 2013The annual Security in Government (SIG) Conference and Exhibition is hosted by the Australian Attorney-General’s Department and is held to bring together all of the government’s senior security advisors to discuss protective security issues and to have the opportunity to engage with security companies via the trade exhibition. The trade exhibition is open to service providers who work closely with the government, providing security solutions.

Kaba attends this event annually, and this year was no exception. We had a contingent of dedicated sales team members attend the event, showcasing government specific products, such as our entrance control systems, X-09 safe locks, high security master key systems, relevant door hardware and E-Plex push button locks.

We found SIG to be not only enjoyable but very worthwhile and look forward to attending next year’s event.

Total Facilities 2013We attended the Total Facilities trade show at the beginning of June this year. The event sees an array of different organisations come together to exhibit products specifically for those in professional facilities management. We focused our exhibited products to access control, entrance control and workforce management and received a good response from those attending.

We look forward to attending this event again next year when it is held in Melbourne.

LGA MeetingWe were fortunate enough to host an LGA meeting at our Sydney premises in June this year. It was great to see such an enthusiastic response from LGA members who turned out in force, despite the wintery weather.

We thank the members who took the time to attend the meeting and look forward to welcoming more of our valued customers to our premises in the future.

We sat down with Evan Williams, one of our NSW Architectural Representatives to learn a little more about his day to day activities and what he likes to do when not at Kaba.

This is what he had to say:

Q. How long have you been with Kaba?

A. Almost 4 years now

Q. Describe a typical day.

A. Predominately, my day involves meeting with designers and developers who are working on new, upcoming construction projects.

Q. Tell us a little about yourself. Your background and how you ended up working at Kaba Australia.

A. Originally I’m from an architectural drafting background. I worked for a door and frame company while I completed my studies, which entailed a bit of both design & sales. I enjoyed the sales aspect of the role and later found

myself working for a security key manufacturer in a full time sales role. I briefly worked for a door hardware distributor, and then made the move to KABA.

Q. You have been involved in many interesting projects. Do you have a favourite? And if so, what makes it so memorable?

A. The recent Garungula Art Gallery was a cool one. Although not like any of the larger projects, it was quiet complicated in parts and presented a number of interesting challenges and concepts to assist the architect in achieving what their client wanted. It turned out quite nicely while using a number of the new KABA products.

Q. What do you like to do when you are not at Kaba?

A. I’ve been riding bikes for some years now. Previously racing mountain bikes etc but I’ve found a new sport which I’m now learning; Para-gliding.
