TIDBITS® OBSERVES
NOW, THAT’S CORNY!by Patricia L. Cook
This Tidbits examines corn, the No. 1 field crop in North America. Corn is grown on every continent in the world except Antarctica. • Corn originated in present-day Mexico and is known
also by the name “maize.” Botanically, corn is a member of the grass family. Cornstalks can grow from 2 to 20 feet (0.6 to 6.1 m) high, with the aver-age being about 8 feet (2.4 m).
• The ear or cob is the female part of the plant and houses up to 1,000 seeds called kernels. Each ear is en-veloped in a whorl of leaves called husks. Ears occur along the plant’s main stalk. The tassel is the male part of the plant and occurs at the top or end of a stalk. From the tassel comes pollen that fertilizes eggs in the ear that eventually produces the kernels. Wondering why they are called ears?• If you think “ears” of corn are called “ears” because they stick out like human ears, you are not alone. Many people think that, but it is wrong. The term “ear” comes from an old English measurement called an ear of grain. It is related to the Dutch word, “aar” and the German word, “aehre.” Also, the Gothic word for husk of corn is “ahs.” turn the page for more!

NOW, THAT’S CORNY! (continued):• About 40 percent of the world’s corn is grown in the United States. Over half of the U.S. corn grows in four states: Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska and Minnesota. The “Corn Belt” in the United States is typically defined as the above four states plus Ohio, Indiana, Missouri and Kansas. The corn-growing region has relatively level land, adequate rainfall and rich, fertile soil. • For the last two decades Iowa has produced the largest corn crop of any state. Actually Iowa pro-duces more corn than most countries. For example, Iowa grows about three times as much as corn as Mexico, even though the corn consumption per person there is almost three times higher than in the United States.• Approximately 90 percent of the corn in the United States is grown on family farms. Irrigation is usually unnecessary, with 87 percent of the corn grown using only natural rainfall. • There are five varieties of corn: 1) field corn, which is used for livestock feed, fuel and industrial products; 2) popcorn; 3) food-grade corn, used for numerous food products like corn bread and torti-llas; 4) sweet corn, the best to eat; and 5) seed corn, grown for kernels to be used for the next year’s crop. • Most things in nature that have rows or lines tend to grow in even numbers. This comes about with cell division; one cell dividing into two and continuing evenly. Corn kernels always grow in an even number of rows. An average ear of corn has 800 kernels in 16 rows.
• One of the primary uses of field corn is animal feed. Approximately 40 percent of the U. S. corn crop is used as livestock and poultry feed.
• Included in this 40 percent is the production of distiller’s grain, a co-product from ethanol produc-tion that is a great supplement for animal feed.
• Another use of field corn is ethanol production. In 2010, 36.5 percent of the U.S. corn crop was used to produce ethanol. Ethanol is a clean alterna-tive fuel that is blended with 70 percent of the gas-oline produced in the United States and comprises about 4.6 percent of total U.S. gasoline consump-tion.
• Lastly, field corn is used for a variety of indus-trial products, including bioplastics, fabrics, cray-ons, compostable tableware and food containers.
• Popcorn has been part of American cuisine since before the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492. In fact, research indicates that likely an-cestors of Native Americans enjoyed popcorn be-fore the birth of Christ.

Purring and Feline Meditation
Early in kittenhood purring becomes a mysterious part of your cat. About two days of age kittens purr in the presence of their mother and nursing. Early purring is a signal to mom that ‘things are good’ and kneading with the front paws stimulates milk let down. Mature kittens continue to purr around humans and this may be a transfer of a mother figure emotion to surrogate humans. Finally, the three related behaviors of purring, kneading and drooling show a link to nursing and feline contentment. Purring is communication, emotion and meditation all wrapped in one. Cats purr when they are comfortable and content, when they are anxious and fearful, when they are anxious or are in pain and when they are sick or injured. It appears that purring puts the domestic feline in a meditative state that can vibrate into his human friends. Petting cats and the resultant purr has been proven to bring down human blood pressure and reduce stress. Add laughter and play to the domestic feline equation and humans and cats have a win, win situation. How do cats purr? The sound comes from the larynx where the vocal folds vibrate at constant frequencies. Turbulent air flow during respiration is called “tonal buzz” by scientists but we know it as purring!Humans become more productive in the presence of cats. When college students were allowed feline roommates at five major universities, these students studied longer, had less stress and got a grade point higher than students who did not have a feline study buddy. Cats have also been shown to help autistic children focus on studies and living a more productive life. The ‘sacred bond’ between a purring cat and humans has spanned the years from the early Egyptians to the present.

Mandarin Garnet
Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. For more information on gemstones or jewelry of any kind call 303.841.2666
In 1991 the first mandarin garnets were discov-ered along the winding Kunene River on the border between Namibia and Angola in south-west Africa. It wasn’t long until the mines were depleted and though gemologists thought there was more to be found, the costs of mining forbade any further exploration in the area. Previous to their discovery in Namibia manda-rin garnets had been found in Sri Lanka, Upper Burma, Madagascar, Brazil, Australia, Kenya and Tanzania, and yet they were seldom used in jewelry, though gemstone lovers and collectors appreciated them. Jewelry designers ignored them because specimens with superior color and quality were seldom found. The fantastic crystals from Namibia, on the other hand, were of an unusually fine, intensely radiant orange. Then in 1994 more mandarin garnets with brilliance comparable to the Namibian stones appeared in the marketplace. This time they came from Nigeria and only a true specialist could discern the differences. A sparkling rich reddish-orange, a matchless luminosity, an exceptional hardness, and great rarity makes the mandarin garnet a preferred stone for free spirited individu-als with a flare for style.

THIS IS A HAMMERBy Samantha Mazzotta
Use Bolts to Anchor Pictures to Wall
Q: I have to hang some heavier pictures, and I’m a little confused by all the choices in different kinds of
bolts. What options do I have? -- Frank in Tuscon
A: Depending on the weight of the item you’re hang-ing on the wall, a variety of bolts are available -- but
the most common are expansion bolts or anchors (also known as Molly bolts, for some reason), and toggle bolts. Both kinds of bolts are helpful in anchoring
somewhat heavy objects to drywall when a stud can’t be located or used.
Expansion bolts have an exterior plastic sheath, which is straight when inserted into a hole drilled into the
wall, but expand behind the wall once placed. They’re designed for heavy objects like large framed pictures,
mirrors or shelves.Toggle bolts have metal wings that unfold once insert-ed on the other side of the drywall, providing a sturdy backing for much heavier objects like small cabinets. To use an expansion bolt, mark the spot on the wall
where you plan to hang a picture or heavy item. Drill a hole at the width specified to fit the expansion bolt. With the metal screw inserted fully into the expansion sheath, push the bolt through the hole or gently tap in with a hammer. Turn the screw head clockwise until
it’s tight -- this action expands the sheath so that it sits snug against the wall.
Unscrew the metal screw from the expansion bolt sheath and mount the picture by inserting the screw through the picture’s hanger or screw hole and back
into the expansion bolt.To use a toggle bolt, first drill a hole in the wall at the width specified. Unscrew the metal flange (the spring-loaded expansion unit) from the metal screw. Run the screw through the screw hole or the picture’s hanger,
then screw the metal flange back onto the screw, on the opposite side of the hanger or screw hole.
Pinch the flange closed with one hand and push it through the drilled hole while guiding the picture into position. Once the flange is all the way through, pull the metal screw until you can feel the flange pressing against the back side of the wall. Tighten the metal
screw until it and the picture are secure.
HOME TIP: Metal or wooden studs are located ap-proximately 16 inches apart on average.

• Nutritionally, popcorn is a good source of fiber and complex carbohydrates yet low in fat and calories, making it a great between-meal snack. Air-popped popcorn contains 31 calories per cup, oil-popped pop-corn contains 55 calories per cup, and lightly buttered popcorn contains 133 calories per cup. Three cups of popped popcorn equals one serving from the grain group.
• Reports in March 2012 from a study conducted at the University of Scranton indicated that the crunchy hull of popcorn is rich in polyphenols. Polyphenols are antioxidants that prevent damage to cells and may have disease-fighting properties.
• By the way, when popcorn pops, it forms two ba-sic shapes: snowflake and mushroom. Movie theater and ballpark popcorn are snowflake-shaped because this form looks and pops bigger. Mushroom popcorn is used more for candy because it doesn’t crumble.
• Sweet corn differs from other corn varieties in that it is genetically distinct and accumulates twice the amount of sugar as field corn. The sought-after taste of sweet corn is best experienced by eating it directly off the cob. The Papoon variety of sweet corn, the first variety acquired by European settlers in North America, can be traced back to the Iroquois tribe of Native Americans in 1779.
• Constantine, Michigan, proclaims itself the “Seed Corn Capital of the World.” Reportedly, 20 percent of the seed corn production in the United States occurs in greater Constantine and the surrounding counties.
• Food-grade corn comes generally as either white corn or yellow corn. Yellow corn is more prevalent, but with the swelling Latino population in the United States and the fact that white corn is preferred for Latino recipes (for example, Mexican tortillas), the demand for food-grade white corn is increasing.
• Corn is one of the most pervasive food ingredi-ents in the world today. Consider this list of corn-containing foods that is significant but far from complete: baking mixes, baking powders, cornbread, corn flakes, Fritos, grits, hominy, margarine, pop-corn, tortillas. Consider also the many non-food items that contain corn: aspirin, cough syrups, en-velopes, gelatin capsules, powders, stamps, starched clothing, talcums, toothpaste, soaps and vitamins. Corn is actually an ingredient in more than 3,000 grocery products!
• There are many corn festivals across the United States, mostly in August and September. There are even some corn festivals in Canada. Probably one of the biggest and longest-running annual festivals is the Mendota Sweet Corn Festival in Mendota, Illi-nois. In its 65th year, the festival serves free corn that has been cooked “with the help of a vintage steam engine.”

Athletes Take Out the Barbell !!!
I recently talked about “back to school” Mouthguards, and the need to wear one while participating in contact sports to help prevent knocked out or broken teeth, and fractured jaws. Well, there’s one more thing for parents (and dentists) to worry about: Now we have to tell athletes (and non-athletes) to get rid of the barbell. Hav-ing a “barbell” tongue piercing raises several concerns and questions:
Q. Are tongue piercings dangerous?
A. Yes! A growing number of young ath-letes are emulating their professional he-roes by adorning their bodies with oral piercings, such as the “tongue barbell”. According to the Academy of General Den-tistry (AGD), oral tongue jewelry puts the athlete at considerable risk for some seri-ous medical and dental problems. One of every five oral piercings results in infec-tion caused by oral bacteria in the punc-ture wound. In addition, a sudden blow or impact to the head can dislodge the barbell and cause it to be inhaled into the lungs, or swallowed and cause injury to the GI tract.
Q. Are athletes more susceptible to infection?
A. Yes! Vigorous exercise increases the heart and breathing rate, causing Infec-tion to spread more quickly. Bleeding from contact injury also increases the risk of in-fection.
Q. Can oral barbells damage the teeth and gums?
A. Yes! Clicking, tapping, or rubbing the barbell jewelry on the teeth has caused so many cracks and fractures of the teeth that the damage has a new name – the wrecking ball fracture!
Tongue jewelry also causes injury to the gums – rubbing the barbell against the gums can cause the gums to recede and bone loss around the teeth.
The Wise Owl’s Advice: Take out the barbell; leave the mouthguard!
KEEP YOUR TEETH AND GUMS HEALTHY FOR A LIFETIME

Roth IRA: For Your Retirement ...
and Beyond If you’re somewhat fa-miliar with investing, you may know that the Roth IRA is a great
retirement-savings vehicle. But are you aware that some of its benefits can also pay off for the next generation of your family?
To understand why this is so, it’s nec-essary to be familiar with a Roth IRA’s features. For starters, when you contrib-ute to a Roth IRA, your earnings have the potential to grow tax free, provided you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re 59½ and you’ve had your ac-count at least five years. The amounts
you contributed aren’t taxed when withdrawn because you’ve already paid taxes on the money you put in. And the potential for tax-free earnings can continue even when your beneficiaries inherit your Roth IRA, though you’ll need to consult with your tax advisor on this issue.
A Roth IRA also offers other features that can help you build resources for retirement while possibly helping your surviving family members. For one thing, you can contribute to your Roth IRA for as long as you have some earned income, up to the con-tribution limits, and as long as you meet certain income limi-tations. Even if you’ve officially “retired,” you might do some consulting or part-time work. So you could put some of your earnings into your Roth IRA. This ability to keep funding your Roth IRA virtually indefinitely can give you more flexibility in managing your retirement income — and, depending on how you do manage that income and what your other objectives may be, you may also end up with more money that could be left to your beneficiaries.
Also, unlike a traditional IRA or a 401(k), a Roth IRA does not require you to start taking minimum distributions at age 70½. In fact, you are never required to withdraw money from your Roth IRA. And by leaving your account intact for as long as pos-sible, you’ll potentially have more money available for a variety of options — one of which may involve leaving sums to your beneficiaries. Your non-spouse beneficiaries must take annual required minimum distributions, but they have the option to take the distributions over their lifetime.
Keep in mind, though, that your Roth IRA is part of your estate for purposes of federal estate taxes. In 2012, your estate would be subject to these taxes if it were worth more than $5.12 million (or less, if you made certain gifts). In 2013, however, this amount is scheduled to drop to $1 million unless Congress acts on this issue. (Some states also have estate taxes that apply at amounts less than the federal amount.) In any case, if you have a sizable estate, you should consult with your tax and legal advisors.
When you invest in a Roth IRA, your goal, first and foremost, is to help fund your retirement. In fact, basically all your decisions regarding your Roth IRA — how much to contribute, where to invest the money and when to begin taking withdrawals — should be based on your own retirement goals. However, as a side benefit to investing in a Roth IRA, you may find that you could help out the next generation, or two, of your family.

¥ It was beloved American poet Robert Frost who made the following sage observation: “A bank is a place where they lend you an umbrella in fair weather and ask for it back when it begins to rain.”
¥ In 1938, Time magazine featured Adolph Hitler on the cover as its Man of the Year.
¥ You might be surprised at some of the amazing feats that can be accomplished with the aid of mod-ern medicine. In 2008, two women in India gave birth at the age of 70. With the aid of egg dona-tion and postmenopausal in vitro fertilization, Rajo Devi Lohan gave birth to her only child, a girl. Cha-ran Singh Panwar and his wife, Omkari Panwar, already had two daughters and five grandchildren, but they wanted a son. Using the same procedure, Omkari had twins, a boy and a girl.

¥ The most common name in the world is Mu-hammed.
¥ If you live in the South, home of huge roach-es, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that a cockroach can live for a week without a head. When the headless insect does finally die, it’s from starvation, not from the loss of its head.

¥ On Sept. 9, 1776, the Continental Congress formally declares the name of the new nation to be the “United States” of America. It replaced the term “United Colo-nies,” which had been in general use.
¥ On Sept. 3, 1783, the American Revolution officially comes to an end when representatives of the United States, Great Britain, Spain and France sign the Treaty of Paris. The signing signified America’s status as a free nation, as Britain formally recognized the inde-pendence of its 13 former American colonies.
¥ On Sept. 7, 1936, Charles Harden Holley is born in Lubbock, Texas. Writing and performing under the name Buddy Holly, he would have an influence on rock ‘n’ roll that would far outlast his tragically shortened career. He left behind a legacy that includes “That’ll Be The Day,” “Peggy Sue,” “Not Fade Away,” It’s So Easy,” “Everyday,” “Oh Boy!” and “Maybe Baby.”

¥ On Sept. 4, 1957, Ford Motor Company unveils the Edsel, the first new automobile brand produced by one of the Big Three car companies since 1938. One re-porter called it “an Oldsmobile sucking a lemon.” In addition, at highway speeds the famous hood ornament had a tendency to fly off and into the windshield.
