LAST GOOD-BUYby Blue Sullivan
There is something singularly satisfying about finding a really good price on something. Pawn stores and antique shops present opportunities to experience this joy. It’s surely why so many of us are drawn to them.• The old stereotype about pawn shops was that they were dirty places run by unscrupulous men and women looking for every chance they could find to cheat you out of a buck. Yet the massive success of reality shows such as “Pawn Stars” and “Hardcore Pawn” has done a lot to rebut that inaccurate image. • David Bakke of “Market Crashers” notes that while you, “probably look for ways to save money as often as you can… here’s one you may never have considered: shopping at a pawn shop. It’s actually a viable way to save money — and not just on guns.”• In his article, “7 Things You Should and Shouldn’t Buy from a Pawn Shop,” Bakke outlines the best things to buy.

LAST GOOD-BUY (continued):• Bakke says that perhaps the safest buys at any pawn shop are tools. He notes that the prices are often far superior to those of new tools. This is doubly true if you’re just looking for one or two specific tools for home renovation or repair. “It’s simply not worth it to pay full price for seldom-used tools,” says Bakke.• According to Bakke, the other great value found at almost any pawn shop is jewelry. He ex-plains that it’s typical to find prices that are half what they would be for new retail jewelry. Bakke chalks this up to people’s distrust of the idea of “used” jewelry. • “Some people may have an issue with buying ‘used’ jewelry, but isn’t almost all jewelry ‘used’ in some way, shape, or form?” Bakke argues. Since so much jewelry, even retail jewelry, is com-prised of items made from melted down gold from other sources and re-set diamonds, why not buy it “used” for a much better price?• As for items that are best left on the pawn-shop shelf, Bakke is emphatic. He advises to never buy electronics or home appliances with a lot of mov-ing parts. He singles out vacuum cleaners, com-puters, digital cameras and televisions as things to avoid. • Bakke thinks televisions are possibly the riski-est pawn-shop purchase. “There is an implied risk with purchasing anything from a pawn shop since it’s all used merchandise, but this risk goes up even farther with televisions, especially flat-screen LED TVs,” says Bakke.LAST GOOD-BUY (continued):• Bakke warns that almost no pawn shops al-low money back returns. The most they offer is in-store credit, so buyer beware. He advises, “Be sure to inquire specifically about all aspects of any return policy they may have.”• Though he mentions that he has experienced in-stances where something he bought at a pawn shop broke soon after, Bakke thinks that the positives easily outnumber the negatives. He says, “The overall money that I have saved over the years has far outweighed the replacement cost of the few things that did break down.”• The process of finding good value at antique shops requires a little more time and thought, but it’s just as rewarding. An advice column from the website Antique-Marks.com entitled “Buying an-tiques — how, where, when and why to buy” gives 10 sure-fire tips on how to make a wise purchase.• Most antique dealers are happy to haggle over their prices. The column strongly advises antique shoppers to ask for a discount on any item they are

Understanding Your Cat – Part 1
To many people cats are a mystery because they are like no other domestic animal. People train dogs, people train horses, people train other people but cats train people. It is amazing how cats in a household tend to control the social environment and teach others to serve them. Cats do not respond to negatives. Understanding your cat will enhance the human/feline bond.
The domestic cat is social and they form matriarchal groups in their territory. Households with a few cats differ from groups of outdoor barn cats and still larger differences exist from large feral colonies of cats. Population pressures affect each group. Household cats (1-5 in number) are social but interaction with humans many times causes a lot of stress and the physical environment can create many behavioral issues. Barn cats have the best of both worlds – to be free in a protected area, to hunt, to have free choice food, to have human interaction if they want it and to have a territory of their own – noting the risk from other predators. A good barn cat has a pleasurable job for life. Feral cats whether free living or in colonies continue to give us insights into pure feline social behavior. Mothers and daughters in a colony develop kitten rearing duties teaching cat hygiene, hunting, and social interaction. Surrounding the matriarchal core are related males, befriended unrelated males from outside the colony but rarely is an unrelated female ever accepted in the family group. Housing unrelated females in a household can be difficult, whereas neutered males tend to socialize much better.
Social groups can be as little as a one cat group. Three cats in a household could have 3 social groups of one cat each, 2 social groups of a one cat group and 2 cats in the other group. Cats in the same group tend to interact together well – sleeping together, playing together, communicating together (meows, chirps, body posturing and eye language) and grooming each other. Groups have a common characteristic in that grooming amongst cats usually defines members of that group.

ParaibaTourmaline
Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. For more information on gemstones or jewelry of any kind call 303.841.2666
From the Federal Brazilian State of Paraiba comes this petite and precious gemstone with a blue to green hue of remarkable radiance not found in any other gemstone in the world Heitor Dimas Barbosa discovered Paraiba tourmaline after several years of digging in the 1980s. It all began in 1981 when he began his first preparations for excavations at an old, dilapidated opencast mine he knew about. He had one deep hole after another drilled in the hard ground, but with no luck. But after a long and tiring five and a half years of drilling and digging, it appeared that a tourmaline find was imminent. Finally, in the autumn of 1989, a handful of exceptional tourmaline crystals were brought up into the daylight and gemologists saw colors never previously observed. Unfortunately Barbosa was ill and not present at their discovery – and the raw crystals were sold before he had a chance to see them. Now, decades later, the hill that yielded the world’s first Paraiba tourmaline has likely yielded its last, as the mine appears to have been exhausted. Tour-malines with a similar hue have been discovered in Africa but the Paraiba tourmalines remain the most sought after.

Mineral Buildup Around Faucets
Q: I have a recurring problem with mineral deposits building up around my faucets. How can I reduce these, and is there an easier way to clean it off the
faucets and fixtures? -- Carl in Ocala, Fla.
A: Mineral buildup around faucets, also known as “scale,” is common in areas such as yours that have
hard water -- water containing high levels of minerals, particularly those containing calcium or magnesium. Hard water makes it difficult for soaps to lather up,
which is inconvenient for bathers. But more serious is the potential for scale buildup inside water heaters. The most effective way to reduce the prevalence of scale is to install a water softener where the water
enters the house. The size and type of water softener unit depends on how much water you use per day on average and the hardness of the water. You can bring in a professional to test the water, assess your needs and estimate the cost of the installation, or, if you’re experienced with plumbing, you can install the sof-
tener yourself. Some important points to remember are: Get more
than one estimate if possible, and don’t allow work to begin until you’ve approved it in writing. Make sure the installer locates the water softener unit at least 10 feet from the water heater, and that a remote bypass also is installed (this allows you to bypass the water-
softener unit if it shuts down for any reason so that the house still gets water).
Water softeners last for many years and operate with few problems, making them a good value for the
amount of money you’ll spend on parts and installa-tion.
In the meantime, clean scale buildup from faucets and showerheads by shutting off the water supply to the
affected faucets, and unscrewing the shower head and faucet aerators. Wash them in soapy water and rinse well. Then, place in a stainless steel or Teflon lined pan with a solution of half vinegar and half water.
Simmer the hardware for five minutes, cool, then scrub with a nylon brush to remove the deposits.
HOME TIP: To reduce mineral buildup and lengthen the life of your water heater, drain it twice a year via
the drain spigot.

interested in. It notes that dealers usually assign a pri-vate code to each item advising how much of a discount they’re prepared to give (for instance, 25 percent off the sticker). Asking for a discount prompts the salesperson to investigate this. Simply ask, “What’s your best price on this item?”• Another potential option for getting a discount is pay-ing cash, but don’t offer to pay in hard currency up front. After negotiating a maximum discount under the auspic-es of paying by check or credit card, then (and only then) ask if there might any further cash discount. Not every seller will offer one, but some do.• Another essential tip when antique shopping is to thoroughly examine any item of interest before buying. Antique-marks advises you to, “Look at the bottom, the top, the sides. Look from odd angles and use a magnifier to look close.”• Examining each item of interest extensively is vital, as is inquiring about any damage or restoration the item might’ve undergone. As Antique-marks notes, “If you don’t ask, they don’t need to tell you.”• One of the best ways to find a good deal is to look for items that don’t fit the focus of the individual antique shop. If you’re in a shop that focuses on furniture, look for the odd bit of ceramics or jewelry. Items that don’t fit in will often be discounted much higher to get rid of them. • Check if the shop is a member of any trade associa-tions. As Antique-marks notes, this provides “a greater degree of security and protection” for your purchases. Fake antiques are not uncommon, and some are quite convincing.• When completing your antique purchase, make sure you a get a receipt. Make sure it lists specifics about the item, including age, damage or restoration, the material it’s made of and its value.• Finally, if you decide to purchase antiques at auction, do your homework! Know the rules of auction bidding and familiarize yourself with items shipped from outside the country. Valuable and antique items must be declared through customs.

A recent trip to Elkhart, Indiana, where 90% of mini-buses are built, helped me realize how different the bus business is from the car business. My previous 17 years of experience was in the retail car business, having worked in the dealership environment. The best analogy I can come up with is the very contrast of the Amish culture, which I witnessed in Elkhart, versus the typical American way of life that most of us live every day. The Amish horse and buggy compared to the automobile, the car business to the bus business is just as different.
This is all from a Sales Consultant view, as that is what I am most familiar with. What I have come to enjoy most, is the often repeated quote “if you can dream it, it can be built in a bus”. The car manufacturers restrict the consumer every step of the way. First, you must sort through all the different manufacturers and models, and there are way too many. Once you have narrowed it down to 2 or 3 different Manufacturers and the specific models, then comes the challenge of sorting through each one and selecting from the limited option packages that the manufacturer makes available. Each one is its own animal and is only available to be built with a few variations from how they are all built. This is the restriction I am referring to.
Although buses, also have several different manufacturers, and some build buses better than others, once the particular manufacturer has been selected, the rest is completely customizable. The consumer will select the size of the bus, the chassis, the engine size, and all of the options that go into the bus based on their specific application. Speaking of needs, that is the other great difference between the bus business and the car business. The majority of car purchases tend to become a “want” purchase. We all need transportation to go from home to work, but we choose the car to do it in based on styling, power, and what we desire. Most of our customers “need” a bus, as the bus is a tool of their particular business.
As a sales consultant, the relationship that is developed with the customer is what I have come to enjoy most. Essentially, I become a partner in their business, by helping them build the bus that is going to best suit their needs. If a bus is an integral part of your business, I welcome the opportunity to visit with you and assist in your success.

Invest Early - and Wisely - for Col-
lege
School is back in session. If you have school-age children, you’re probably busy getting
them acclimated to another year of hit-ting the books. But the school years go by quickly, so it won’t be long before your kids are ready to head off to col-lege. Will you be financially prepared to help them?
It’s certainly a challenge, especially given rising costs of higher education. Consider these figures from the College Board: For the 2011-2012 school year, the average cost (including tuition, fees, room and board) was $17,131 per year for an in-state student attending a pub-
lic, four-year college or university. For a student attending a pri-vate four-year school, the comparable average cost was $38,589 annually. And these numbers are likely to increase in the years ahead.
So, what can you do to help meet the high costs of higher educa-tion? For starters, you need to save and invest — early and often. And you’ll also want to choose investments that are particularly well suited for college. Here are a few suggestions:
529 plan — When you invest in a 529 plan, all withdrawals will be free from federal income taxes, as long as the money is used for a qualified college expense for your child, or even your grandchild. (However, non-qualified withdrawals may be subject to federal, state and penalty taxes.) Contribution limits are quite high so, in all likelihood, you’ll be able to put as much as you want into a 529 plan; although you generally can’t exceed the an-nual gift tax exclusion, which is $13,000 per beneficiary in 2012. Furthermore, if you participate in your own state’s 529 plan, your contributions may be tax deductible on your state taxes. Coverdell Education Savings Account — Depending on your income level, you can contribute up to $2,000 annually to a Cov-erdell Education Savings Account (ESA) in 2012. Your Cover-dell earnings and withdrawals will be tax-free, provided you use the money for qualified education expenses. (Any non-education withdrawals from a Coverdell ESA may be subject to a 10 per-cent penalty.) Unlike a 529 Plan, in addition to college expenses, Coverdell funds can be used for kindergarten through 12th grade expenses and you can place Coverdell ESA contributions into virtually any investment you choose - stocks, bonds, certificates of deposit, etc. Zero coupon bonds — A zero coupon bond is priced at a dis-count to its principal or face value. You receive the principal value when the bond matures. So, you could purchase a zero coupon bond that matures in the year your child is ready to go to college. Although you won’t receive regular interest payments throughout the life of the zero coupon bond, you’ll still be liable for the taxes on this interest. So, before purchasing a zero coupon bond, consult with your tax advisor.
These investments have proven popular among many parents and grandparents. However, you’ll need to consult with your fi-nancial advisor to determine which college-savings vehicles are appropriate for your needs. But don’t wait too long — because, before you know it, today’s grade-schoolers will be packing for their college dorms.

¥ On Sept. 24, 1789, The Judiciary Act of 1789 is passed by Congress and signed by President George Washington, establishing the Supreme Court of the United States as a tribunal made up of six justices. By 1869 the number of justices was increased to nine.
¥ On Sept. 30, 1868, the first volume of Louisa May Alcott’s beloved children’s book “Little Women” is published. Alcott dedicated most of her life and writing to supporting her family after her father’s failure at run-ning Transcendentalist school. Her works include “Lit-tle Men” (1871) and “An Old-Fashioned Girl” (1870).
¥ On Sept. 28, 1901, Ed Sullivan, who would become the host of the long-running TV variety program “The Ed Sullivan Show,” is born in New York City. During the peak of its popularity in the 1950s and 1960s, Sulli-van’s program showcased a wide range of entertainers, including The Beatles and Elvis Presley.

LEGAL ADVICEBy: April Norton, Esq.Sitting on a bench, Forrest Gump once mused: "Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you're gonna get." I love this quote because the truth is life is never what we "plan" it to be. Instead it is full of twists and turns. We hold on and hope to learn as we go.I did not plan to become a bankruptcy attorney. Initially,I practiced family law and criminal defense. Still firmly attached to my desire of making things better for others, the prac-tice of bankruptcy actually found me. Nine years later, I feel I am exactly whereI am supposed to be: in a posi-tion to help my clients find a fresh start. When I left my home to start a career, I never thought I would give up the Florida beach-es for the mountains and fall in love with Colorado. Now, an avid hiker and dog lover, I can truly attest to the fact that you never really know what you are going to end up with in this life.We each have our own challenges. How we handle them speaks volumes of who we are.

AN EMAIL FROM BEYOND!
A Minnesota couple decided to vacation to Florida during the winter. They planned to stay at the very same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier. Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel schedules. So, the husband left Minnesota and flew to Florida on Thursday. His wife would fly down the following day.
The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an e-mail to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her e-mail address, and without real-izing his error, he sent the e-mail.
Meanwhile.....somewhere in Houston, a widow had just returned home from her husband's funeral. He was a minister of many years who was called home to glory following a sudden heart attack. The widow decided to check her e-mail, expecting messages from relatives and friends. After reading the first message, she fainted.
The widow's son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read:
To: My Loving WifeSubject: I've ArrivedDate: 16 May 2003I know you're surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you are allowed to send e-mails to your loved ones. I've just arrived and have been checked in. I see that everything has been pre-pared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then! Hope your journey is not as un-eventful as mine was.
P.S. Sure is hot down here!
