Issue 8, 2013/14 This Week at Leytonstone... 25th October 2013 Well done to students, staff and families for reaching the end of a very busy and tiring half term. I would like to thank you for all of your hard work over the past 8 weeks and wish you all a well earned half term break. The Mock Ofsted gave us a strong foundation of elements to work on in preparation for our official inspection. Pupils and staff were praised for the harmonious environment and inspectors were pleased to see that our pupils enjoy coming to school and undertaking extensive opportunities for responsibility. They also commented that bullying is rare and our whole school attendance is excellent. The summer GCSE results were not high enough in some subjects. As such, we need to set higher targets to encourage development, work on improving reading and writing skills of students, and for more teaching to be rated good or outstanding. It was also noted that all pupils need to be more punctual to lessons to ensure learning starts swiftly with less disruption to teaching. As we enter the colder weeks of the school year it is important that students come to school dressed in appropriate clothing. As always, hoodies are a banned item and should not be worn unless part of the PE Kit (official Leytonstone hoody only). Students should have a suitable outdoor jacket for all weathers, particularly the rain and cold, along with smart leather shoes. Year 10 and 11 students will be given the opportunity to speak to local colleges and discuss further education opportunities during the first week back at the College Road Show taking place in our school hall on Thursday 7th November. Further details can be found further on in this issue. Congratulations to our ASDAN students for their very successful Halloween themed disco for Year 7, 8 and 9 students yesterday. It was a very spooky affair with excellent costumes and all money raised being donated to charity. Well done for your excellent work! Please ensure that any celebrations over the half term weekend are safe and secure, especially if they include fireworks. Finally, I wish Happy Diwali to all families celebrating on Sunday 3rd November. Issue 8, 2013/14 This Week at Leytonstone... 25th October 2013

Well done to students, staff and families for reaching the end of a very busy

and tiring half term. I would like to thank you for all of your hard work over

the past 8 weeks and wish you all a well earned half term break.

The Mock Ofsted gave us a strong foundation of elements to work on in

preparation for our official inspection. Pupils and staff were praised for the

harmonious environment and inspectors were pleased to see that our pupils

enjoy coming to school and undertaking extensive opportunities for

responsibility. They also commented that bullying is rare and our whole

school attendance is excellent.

The summer GCSE results were not high enough in some subjects. As such,

we need to set higher targets to encourage development, work on improving

reading and writing skills of students, and for more teaching to be rated good

or outstanding. It was also noted that all pupils need to be more punctual to

lessons to ensure learning starts swiftly with less disruption to teaching.

As we enter the colder weeks of the school year it is important that students

come to school dressed in appropriate clothing. As always, hoodies are a

banned item and should not be worn unless part of the PE Kit (official

Leytonstone hoody only). Students should have a suitable outdoor jacket for

all weathers, particularly the rain and cold, along with smart leather shoes.

Year 10 and 11 students will be given the opportunity to speak to local

colleges and discuss further education opportunities during the first week

back at the College Road Show taking place in our school hall on Thursday

7th November. Further details can be found further on in this issue.

Congratulations to our ASDAN students for their very successful Halloween

themed disco for Year 7, 8 and 9 students yesterday. It was a very spooky

affair with excellent costumes and all money raised being donated to charity.

Well done for your excellent work!

Please ensure that any celebrations over the half term

weekend are safe and secure, especially if they include

fireworks. Finally, I wish Happy Diwali to all families

celebrating on Sunday 3rd November.

If it’s good enough for Old Macdonald, Leytonstone is there!

On Wednesday Ms Mehmet, Ms Tanveer and Ms

Cole took 11 Year 7 and 8 students to Lea Valley

Parks Farm for a guided tour and learning session

on dairy farming, while also taking the time to

meet some of their other residents, like the turkeys

seen opposite!

It was a great opportunity for students to see a

farm in action and apply it to their studies. Well

done to all involved. We hope you had a

educational and exciting time!

Panto in a Hurry 2013 Update:

Call for Costumes and Props

Preparations for this year’s Panto in a Hurry are in full swing and it looks set to be our best performance yet!

In order to make sure we are prepared for our charity challenge, we are asking students and parents to please save all your Halloween

costume, decorations, bits and bobs!

We don’t want to give too much away but this year’s Panto definitely has a Halloween theme! Vampires, ghouls and zombie costumes or props will be gratefully received. Please bring all donated goods to the school reception marked for the drama department.
