SAYINGS OF SRI RAMAKRISHNA PARAMAHAMSA
IMPORTANCE OF PRAYER AND MEDITATION
* If you believe in God without form, that is quiet all right. But never for a moment think that
this alone is true and all else false. Remember that God with form is just as true as God without
form. But hold fast to your own conviction.
* Even if the image is made of clay, there is need for that kind of worship to suit different men
and women in different stages of knowledge.
* Suppose there is an error in worshipping the clay image; Doesn’t God know that He alone
is being invoked? He will be pleased with that very worship. Why should you get a headache over
it?
* The mind cannot dwell on God
if it is immersed day and night in
worldliness, in worldly duties and
responsibilities; it is most necessary to
go into solitude now and then and think
of God. To fix the mind on God is very
difficult in the beginning, unless one
practices meditation in solitude. When
a tree is young, it should be fenced all
around; Otherwise, it may be destroyed
by cattle.
* There are three ways of
meditating. Think of God while doing
your duties or meditate on Him in a
secluded corner of your house or
contemplate Him in a forest. And you
should always discriminate between the
Real and the unreal; God alone is real,
the Eternal Substance; all else is unreal
and impermanent.. By discriminating
thus, one should shake off impermanent
objects from the mind.
* Do all your duties, but keep
your mind on God. Live with all – with
wife and children, father and mother –
and serve them. Treat them as if they
are very dear to you, but know in your
heart of hearts that they do not belong
to you.

Readers’ Forum
Dear Sir,
In most of the English TV channels, debates are becoming a platform for chaos only and the anchors do
not have the right potential, right temperament to host a show. They sometimes make foolish, irrelevant
comments. They only know to repeat a sentence in higher to highest pitch.
***** Puhabi Das
Dear Sir,
If TV anchors are noisy,we can switch off !!! That is that.
TV Channel survive on ads and that is why "breaking news " etc.
There are really good programmes on some channels. Music is there . Sports are very lifelike.
Kids programmes are good. UGC and Gyan are good. Let us be positive.

Pain of listening to English TV anchors
Dear Sir,
Please refer your article on the subject.
The news hour debate is like a fish market.
The anchor seems to think it is good entertainment if four
people talk at the same time.

Need for transparency in Padma awards
Dear Sir,
I welcome your article on the subject.
With so many award giving organisations in India? Government's awards can altogether be scrapped.
That can save public money.

The bribe giver is in fact more guilty than the demanding bribe taker. Both must be severely punished.

Member of Parliament Sharad Yadav made sexist comment on women from southern India in
Rajya Sabha. That the remark evoked laughter among some male members was even more
appalling.Yadav then commented on women from southern India and said, "The women of south are
dark but they are as beautiful as their bodies. We don't see it here. They know dance (too)."
After reading the above, do we need more proof that many politicians are sub standard people ?
Name withheld no request
Even educated persons are sometimes corrupt
Dear Sir,
The March'15 issue is full of important information on present day
conditions, with the first page of Swami Vivekananda's sayings.
Day in and day out , we see many news of cheating by unscrupulous
people , even by educated persons- who are prepared to resort to
any method- even illegal bribe offering etc., to get benefits.
Many politicians are sub standard
- No more proof needed
Dear Sir,
Bent on preventing the Kerala’s finance minister from presenting
his budget, for his alleged role in collecting bribes from bar
owners in the state, opposition members in Kerala assembly
stormed the speaker's dais, overturned his chair, damaged
furniture and engaged in violent scuffle with the watch and ward
staff. At the end of it all, nine legislators and 12 watch and ward
staff were hospitalized with injuries.

ANTI CORRUPTION DRIVE SHOULD BE TAKEN TO LOGICAL END
Modi government, which is in power now for more than 10 months, is already being criticized for not
keeping it’s promise to effectively fight against the corruption.
Under such circumstances, the decision of CBI court to summon Dr.Manmohan Singh to present
himself in the case relating to coal scam gives new hope to the people that anti corruption drive
would be taken to the logical end. While the court will give verdict based on merit of the case, the
very fact that the former Prime Minister of India has been summoned to the court on corruption
scandal gives hope for the people.
Common man who is facing the demand for bribe
money in several government offices and even in
private institutions in day to day life, is feeling
frustrated and unhappy. People want that the anti
corruption measures of the government should
make positive impact everywhere including at
government offices in small towns and rural areas,
in ration shops, educational institutions, hospitals
etc. . Such impact is yet to be seen and there is no
indication so far that the Modi government has
been able to put fear in the mind of corrupt people
at various levels.

GIRLS SHOULD BE CAREFUL TO PROTECT THEMSELVES
.
In today’s scenario, it is certainly very risky and unsafe for the girls to go out with boy friends,
particularly in the evening hours. Drunken men are all around and girls can easily become the target.
This is really what is happening.
In the interest of their own safety and welfare, the girls have to discipline themselves and subject
themselves to the family traditions. They have to necessarily keep their parents informed about their
activities and if objected to by the parents, they need to recognise that the parents know better in view
of their age, experience and the care for their children.
While dirty men who abuse the girls should be severely punished, this would not relieve the pain of the
suffering girls.
For a citizen, it is extremely agonising to read about the abuse and murder of the girls in rural and
urban areas which appear to be becoming the order of the day. It is for the girls themselves to protect
their interests by keeping their activities within the acceptable parameters of discipline.
Many of such incidents occur everyday. Please read the disturbing media news below.
The cinema culture and the media writings and TV shows often
give a wrong impression to the young girls about the so called
liberty and free living , which often means lack of value system
and absence of parental influence. While many girls have paid
heavily for such indisciplined behaviour and roaming with the so
called boy friends , lessons have not been learnt as news appear
of so many other girls meeting similar fate.
BPO executive kills girl friend after quarrel
An employee of software company in Chennai killed 22 year old
girl friend with a blow to the forehead with a flower vase.
An investigating officer said the man killed her in his second
floor apartment. The couple had been in a relationship for more
than four years.
The couple spent a couple of hours together in the apartment.
They apparently had an argument around 8.30pm and the man hit
her with a flower vase.
It is highly disturbing to read in the newspapers almost every day about the young girls being
murdered , abused, molested or acid sprayed on the face by men and in most cases, the men are
well known to the girls.
Obviously, the girls who become victims do not exercise adequate caution in their dealings with
men and perhaps, act without the knowledge and the consent of the parents. In many of such
instances, the parents know about the gruesome incidents only afterwards and realise that they
have been completely kept in the dark by their daughters.

MISGIVINGS ON MODI GOVERNMENT’S LAND ACQUISITION BILL JUSTIFIED
It is reported that in the last few decades, around 2% of agricultural land in the country have already
been lost to industrial , housing and other projects, leaving thousands of agricultural labourers in difficult
economic conditions, needing freebies from government to survive.
After much protest and realizing the mood of the country, the government has made modifications to
the land acquisition bill, conferring on state governments adequate power to decide on grant of
exemption for certain kinds of land acquisition from the provisions relating to social impact assessment
and food security. Moreover, it limited the acquisition of land for industrial corridors to within one km
on either side of designated railway line or road and limited the extent of acquisition to minimum
requirement. Other provisions include compensation by way of government job for at least one
member of the affected families. Further, the provision granting exemption for private educational
institutions and hospitals have been dropped.
There is the fundamental question as to
whether taking away the agricultural land
for setting up industry or housing projects
is appropriate in a country like India,
which is essentially an agriculture
oriented economy and particularly when
agriculture operations provide jobs to
millions of people at unskilled and semi
skilled level in the densely populated
country. More than 75% of country’s
population constitute peasants and tribals,
who have only traditional skill in
agricultural operations.
Modi government’s stand :
Modi government appears to think
that industrial activity is as important
as agricultural activity and converting
some agricultural land for industrial
projects is inevitable , if the country
were to sustain economic growth to
the desired level. Government further
argues that it has put several
safeguards to ensure that land
acquisition would be for appropriate
projects only and will not result in
undue benefit for corporate houses.
Modi government’s determined move to enact the Land Acquisition Bill has caused considerable
misgivings in the country, for which there appear to be justifiable reasons
Nandini Voice For The Deprived, April 2015 Page 9
MISGIVINGS ON MODI GOVERNMENT’S LAND ACQUISITION BILL JUSTIFIED
There are thousands of acres of industrial land presently occupied by many industries, where only a
portion of the land is utilized and other land remains unused. There are many sick projects which has
been remaining closed with hundreds of acres of land that are not presently put to any use. There are
many educational institutions with hundreds of acres of land , where only a few acres are utilized. There
are also land where the site is not suitable for agricultural operations. The government is not known to
have enumerated such unutilized land available in the country. The government cannot say today that
the country does not have such unutilized and wasted land.
The ground reality is that the promoters of many industrial projects ask for and get much more land
than what they need , only considering the appreciation of the land value in course of time.
Modi government has not given any indication that it is aware of such issues and it has not announced
any policy as to how much of land should be allotted for particular industrial project.
Amongst the existing industries and in special economic zones , the government should conduct a land
auditing to identify the unused land and force the industries to give up such land for setting up new
projects. This is possible.
The genuine question is why agricultural land should be taken away without putting the unutilized and
wasted land for use for setting up industrial projects.
Investment in agriculture can be more productive than in industry :
Should the interest of agriculture be sacrificed for the sake of industrial growth is a very valid question.
People cannot live without food but they can live without cosmetics and automobiles.
What about wasted and unutilized land ?:
The question is whether Modi government has
exhausted all the options for identifying the
available unutilized land for industrial and
development projects , that can avoid taking
away the land from agricultural operations. One
gets the impression that the government has not
done this exercise adequately so far.
Industrial growth should be complimentary
to the agricultural growth and it cannot be
allowed to become a substitute for
agricultural growth even to a limited extent.
Such move is bad in principle and contrary
to the sentiments of large section of the
country men.
Above all, the potentials for exploiting
agricultural operations for India’s economic
growth with equanimity is no less than what
industrial operations can achieve for the
country.

PLIGHT OF VISUALLY CHALLENGED WOMEN
Visually challenged persons have been demanding implementation of 3% job reservation for them in
government schools and colleges. When police forcibly evicted them, several protestors were injured.
Such protests by visually impaired persons have been taking place frequently and obviously , the
government has not met their demands in a way that they would be satisfied. While there may be
difference of view as to whether visually impaired persons should indulge in such sort of protests
blocking traffic on the road, what one should realise is that they have been forced to resort to such
measures due to helpless conditions faced by them.
There are reported to be around ten lakh visually impaired persons living in Tamil Nadu alone , of which
around five lakh persons are women. The plight of the visually impaired women should be seen to be
believed. More than 90% of the visually impaired women who are well spread throughout Tamil Nadu ,
belong to lower income group families. While they are taken care of by their parents , (in some cases,
parents are also visually impaired) when they are young, they face extremely uncertain future when
their parents pass away.
It is very important that the government should adopt the unemployed visually impaired women by
giving them free boarding & lodging permanently. This is the bounden duty of the government.
When visually impaired women are forced to come to the streets to protest and are dragged by the
police personnel, it is a reflection on the conscience level of the government and the society.
While the government has not done enough to help the poor visually impaired women, what the
society has done is little and very few private sector organisations provide jobs to visually impaired
women. The most recent agitation of the visually impaired persons should sensitise the society and the
government, to ensure that there will not be any more need for such agitation in future.
While a small segment of the
visually impaired women
educate themselves and get
degree level qualifications to
get teaching jobs in
government owned
institutions, there are number
of them waiting for such jobs
for several years. Those who
cannot educate themselves
due to various reasons face
many hazards including
physical insecurity problems.
They have no place to go.
It is extremely distressing to know that visually challenged woman was injured during a
demonstration organised by visually impaired persons in Chennai recently, when police tried to
remove the agitators.

AMARTYASEN’S OUTBURST
AFTER BEING DENIED SECOND TERM
On being denied second term as Chancellor of Nalanda University, AmartsyaSen has criticised the
Modi government and accused it of threatening the academic freedom. Obviously, AmartyaSen
would not have said this if he has been given a second term. His reaction sounds like that of a typical
politician in India, who views any situation considering his personal interests.
AmartyaSen has completed his term as Chancellor of Nalanda University and his term has not been
disturbed in the middle. Certainly, the government has the duty, responsibility and authority to decide
as to who should be the next chancellor and the decision need not always go in favour of incumbent.
Person like AmartyaSen, a Nobel laureate who gets lot of publicity in the Indian media , should
understand this prerogative of the government.
By no stretch of imagination ,one
can say that not providing a
second term for the Chancellor
amount to threaten the academic
freedom. Certainly, there are
people in India who are equally
suitable or even may be more
suitable than AmartyaSen for the
job and the government is entitled
to examine such possibilities.
It is unfortunate that AmartyaSen
has viewed the issues relating to
academic freedom in India in such
a restricted way such as posting
of chancellor.
SHOULD JUDGES TALK LIKE THIS ?
When a judge, particularly the person who held position as Chief Justice of High Court and later on
judge in Supreme Court say something unbecoming of a judge, countrymen feel sad and frustrated.
Obviously, some retired people who do not occupy position of power and authority anymore,
want to be in the media glare. If they say something unusual or make strikingly absurd statement,
reporters immediately would flock to them and the attention of the whole country would be
turned towards them through the media.
This appears to be the expectation of Justice Markandey Katju.
This person is not new to controversy or to say some thing in public
that is obnoxious. Now, he has gone to the extreme level to state
that Mahatma Gandhi was agent of British.
It is high time that the country should learn to view persons like
Markandey Katju with the contempt that they deserve.

IS ANNA HAZARE ANY MORE THE ACTIVIST THAT WE KNOW OF?
Anna Hazare remained quiet for some time , helplessly seeing his “lieutenant “ Kejriwal becoming a full
fledged politician and later on the other “ lieutenant” Bedi also jumping into politics. Both these
“ lieutenants” ignored Anna Hazare for all practical purposes , after getting into the role of politicians.
Anna Hazare openly said that he disapproved the political role of his “lieutenants” but his “lieutenants”
did not seem to care.
It is unfortunate that it now appears that Anna Hazare is no more interested in his anti corruption
movement and has chosen alternate reason to launch agitation.
Now, Anna Hazare is trying to reinvent himself by launching a movement in support of what he calls as
the “anti farmer policies of Modi government.” As in the past, all sorts of people who have a score to
settle with Modi government are likely to jump into the band wagon , which Anna Hazare may well
assume is due to genuine respect for his leadership. Obviously, he has not learnt any lessons taught to
him by Kejriwal and Bedi.
When Anna Hazare announced that around 20000 poor farmers would join his agitation in Delhi from
other parts of the country, many wondered as to who finance the travel and stay expenses of these
farmers. Obviously, neither the poor farmers nor Anna Hazare can afford to bear their expenses for
travel to Delhi and stay in Delhi during the agitation.
Threat of agitation by Anna Hazare this time is
unlikely to generate the type of support that he
gained earlier.
Things have not improved yet as far as the
corruption conditions in the country are
concerned and by not focussing on anti
corruption movement anymore and switching
over to agitation against land acquisition,
Anna Hazare appears to be changing the horse
midstream.
In launching such agitation against land acquisition
and asking opposition parties to join the agitation,
Anna Hazare has unwittingly provided his
agitation against land acquisition a political
colour. Obviously, people like Kejriwal and
Rahul Gandhi will try to gain limelight under the
shadow of Anna Hazare.
When Anna Hazare, the Indian anti corruption activist , launched the anti corruption movement a
few years back, he received overwhelming support from the country men. However, Anna
Hazare’s anti corruption movement lost it’s steam after some time, as he associated all and sundry
with the movement and all sorts of statements were made by his “ lieutenants” like Kejriwal and
Bedi, which were political and venomous in tone.
Finally, when his anti corruption fast in Mumbai did not take off and he had to suspend it due to lack
of response from the people, Anna Hazare looked like a faded figure. This was unfortunate, as the
anti corruption movement is needed by the country then and now.
Nandini Voice For The Deprived, April 2015 Page 13
FACTION WAR IN AAP
At least some people thought that AAP will set new standards and emerge as role model for other
political parties in the country. In any case, this is what Kejriwal and his friends claimed and based on
such claims they campaigned during the Delhi poll.
Delhi voters ignored several complaints and allegations against the leadership of AAP such as collection
of tainted money from all and sundry for the election campaign and providing fictitious account for the
money collected. So far, AAP has conveniently ignored such allegations. It would have been appropriate
for the party to order an enquiry about the allegations against AAP after coming to power, if the party
were really true to it’s claim of having tall standards of probity and accountability.
The present squabble in AAP only provides more frustration and disappointment to Indians , who long
for emergence of patriotic, capable and unblemished people in power.
The present faction war in AAP clearly indicates that this party
is really no different from other political parties in the country,
with ego , prejudice and one upmanship becoming the
central factor in the relationship between the persons in the
leadership position of the party.
Even though Delhi voters responded to the campaign of AAP
and provided unmatched support for the party in the recent
Delhi election, it has not brought any sense of responsibility
amongst the party leaders but only created friction amongst
them, obviously due to the greed of dominating the party
leadership, to reap the benefits of power

SENSITIVE FISHERMEN ISSUE IN SRI LANKA
SHOULD NOT BE HANDLED IN INSENSITIVE WAY
One should also keep in view that for the last several decades ,there have been healthy understanding
between the fisher men of India and Sri Lanka and significant segment of the Sri Lankan fisher men are
those of Tamil origin. The skirmishes between the fisher men of these two countries are of recent
origin and perhaps, whipped up by the politicians who always like to fish in troubled water.
One of the allegations is that some fishing entrepreneurs from India (particularly from Tamil Nadu)
operate giant fishing trawlers to catch fish in Indian waters, leaving the poor Indian fisher men who use
the conventional method of fishing , with little fish to catch . Therefore, such fisher men are forced to
cross into Sri Lankan waters for fishing. If this allegation were true, the Government of India and
Sri Lanka can take a decision to ban the operation of giant fishing trawlers in the sea between India and
Sri Lanka . This may be a tangible solution for the problem.
Instead of Mr.Wickramasinghe talking about using violent methods of shooting to terrorise and drive
away the Indian fisher men who cross into Sri Lankan water, the feasibility of constituting a peace
committee between the fishermen in Sri Lanka and India can be thought about. This may work and
evolve a mutual agreeable mechanism to avoid friction, as there would be fisher men in both the sides
with reasonable approach and peaceful intentions.
In any case, Mr.Wickramasinghe should avoid making such counter productive statement , which would
do more harm than good to the interest of fisher men in both the countries. Violent outburst are never
known to have solved problems but it can only aid in prolonging the problem. It is sad that
Mr.Wickramasinghe gives an impression that he has not appreciated this golden truth.
While one would certainly
agree that Indian fisher men
should not cross into Sri Lankan
water and vice versa, it is often
possible that the fisher men
from India would be crossing
into Sri Lankan water
inadvertently, particularly since
unlike the land area, the border
cannot be clearly demarcated in
the case of sea water.
Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mr.Ranil Wickramasinge is reported to have said in a media
interaction that Indian fisher men who cross into Sri Lankan waters for fishing would be shot.
This abrasive statement has sent shock waves among the fishermen community in Tamil Nadu.
One is surprised that such a seasoned politician with considerable experience and some
reputation in dealing with the foreign relations of Sri Lanka has made such an insensitive remark,
particularly in a matter concerning the poor fisher men.
Tamil fishermen on death row India to raise Lanka threat to fishermen

CHENNAI CORPORATION PROPOSED FINE OF RS. 25000/- ON THOSE WHO DUMP PLASTIC WASTE
WHO WILL PUNISH CHENNAI CORPORATION?
Overflowing sewage drains in Chennai city has become a common feature and mixing of drinking water
with sewage water due to leakage in sewer lines is reported too frequently. Is not Chennai corporation
responsible for this ?
The ground reality is that the administration of the Chennai Corporation has poor efficiency standards
and the supervisory mechanism does not function adequately. There are many complaints of corruption
and nepotism, which reflects on the standard of administration
People urinate in public places , though it is a
punishable offence. Chennai corporation is not
known to have punished anyone for urinating in
public place. Spitting on the road and begging in
public places are also prohibited by law but rarely
anyone is punished. Many complaints with regard
to sewage overflow and non clearance of
garbage are not even acknowledged by the
corporation on many occasions . Many areas
often go dark in the evenings as the street lights
do not burn. Any one who go through the
neighbourhood newspapers and city page in the
dailies know this readily.
One wonders as to who will punish the
functionaries in Chennai Corporation such as
commissioner, councillors and mayor who are
ultimately responsible for maintaining clean
conditions in the city.
Residents and traders and manufacturers in Chennai may soon have to pay a fine of Rs. 25,000
for illegal disposal of plastic waste.
Chennai Corporation will penalise violators to prevent accumulation of plastic waste with strict
enforcement of anti-littering rules.
Currently, anti littering initiatives in the city include a fine of Rs. 500 by the Corporation.
The penalties proposed for a first-time offence include a fine of Rs. 5,000. The fine is likely to be
Rs. 10,000 for the second offence. Persons who contravene the statutory provisions will be
imprisoned for up to three months or fined Rs. 25,000, or both.
Everyone know that the Chennai Corporation is the biggest offender in violating ecological norms
and clean conditions in the city in many ways . Punishing the common man for dumping plastic
waste without ensuring proper conditions for disposal of waste is a cruel joke on the citizens of
Chennai.
Nandini Voice For The Deprived, April 2015 Page 16
CHENNAI CORPORATION PROPOSED FINE OF RS. 25000/- ON THOSE WHO DUMP PLASTIC WASTE
The bitter truth is that the Chennai Corporation today is not equal to the challenge of keeping the city
clean. It is not even able to maintain Elliots beach in clean conditions, which can be the pride of
Chennai and pleasant place for people to relax.
While it is important that plastic waste should be disposed separately by the people without mixing with
other waste material, it is the duty of the corporation to ensure that such conditions would be possible.
More than imposing punishment upto Rs. 25,000/- Chennai Corporation should carry out high
proactive campaign about disposal of plastic waste and create appropriate disposal mechanism.
