Issue: 8 09/11/18 In the last week of Term 1, 6S had the best attendance with 95.5%. All Year 6 classes had two lates or more lets see if we can get it back down to zero as a year group! Remember to bring a jumper and coat to school as the temperature is beginning to drop. Home reading is the main focus this week. Please make sure you are reading every night and recording it in your home reading journal. Maths home learning will help you practice the skills we learned in multiplication this week and help to prepare you for our division unit next week. We launched our new topic this week WWI. We have been learning all about womens roles in the war effort and why poppies are a symbol of remembrance. We have begun an exciting new unit of WWI poetry. We have been learning how to create atmosphere using metaphors and similes. 6R were the big winners with no lates.

Last week, 6V almost had perfect attendance with 99.7%. I wonder which year 6 class will have the best attendance next week.

The UK Safer Internet Centre has published guidance on using the social networking app Tik Tok. Guidance includes: how to enable privacy settings; using parental controls in the app; age requirements for using Tik Tok; how to report content and functionality to be aware of.

Home reading remains as the main focus this week. Please make sure you are reading every night and recording it in your home reading journal.

We are looking ahead to fractions in our Maths home learning.

This week, we studied what the poppy represents. We also put on our artist hats and made 3D poppies.

We were poets this week! Students worked on creating emotion and imagery in their battlefield poems.

This week we tackled some tricky division problems using the long division method. Students have been focusing on dividing three and four digit numbers by two digit numbers.

The poppy became a symbol for Remembrance Day following the famous poem In Flanders Fields, written by John McCrae during the First World War.

We have played different games this week to work on different hockey skills like shooting, passing and defending.

This week, students went on dictionary hunts for items of clothing. They then used the words to write sentences about what they wear.

The immunisation team from the NHS will be in school on Friday 7th December. They will be administering the flu vaccine to all children. Further information will be given over the next few weeks.

We have paid special attention to our core value of positivity this week.

6S were the big winners this week with nearly perfect attendance. They came in at 99.4%! Well done 6S.

6R only had one late last week for the win. We are still looking for the first class with no lates.

Coats! Coats! Coats!

This week’s Maths home learning is all about our times-tables. Please put extra practice into learning our 3’s, 6’s and 9’s ready for next week!

This week, we have begun to put group presentations together based on information we have learned about aviation during WWI.

We have begun our new unit of study on Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo. We have looked at the relationships between characters in the book.

We have tackled multiplication and division again this week with an extra focus on working out reasoning questions. Remember to keep practicing at home!

Did you know that an explosion on the battlefield in France was heard in London?

Hockey has continued to be the focus this term. We are beginning to move around while keeping control of the hockey ball.

We looked at different accommodations that can be stayed in during holidays. Students have then put these words into sentences.

Year 6 students have been sharing their work with many teachers around the school this week. It has been fantastic to see students taking pride in their learning and accomplishments!

We have paid special attention to our core value of honesty this week.

6S had no lates last week for the win. A big well done to 6S!

We are going to continue focusing on our times-tables this week. Please put extra practice into learning our 4’s, 6’s and 8’s ready for next week!

This week we have been looking at famous figures from WW1. We looked at their lives before the war, their experiences during the war and how they were affected after the war.

We have continued reading Private Peaceful in class. We have been looking at how characters develop over time and through experiences within the story.

Fractions were our new focus this week. We reviewed what a numerator and denominator is. We also practiced finding equivalent fractions.

Did you know that over 12 million letters were delivered to the front each week?

Students have been learning how to combine passing and dribbling skills this week in hockey.

We looked at different holiday activities and which we would like to do on holiday.

Year 6 students have really enjoyed learning about WWI through our Topic and English lessons and have engaged in interesting discussions!

We have paid special attention to our core value of aspiration this week.

6S were the big attendance winners this week with 98.7%.

6S continued their no lates streak last week for the win once again! A big well done to 6S – our double winners!

This week, in our home learning, we are preparing for our next Maths unit by looking at ordering decimals and converting them into fractions.

We had an exciting week in our topic lessons. Classes were able to design their own paper airplane based on research and had the chance to fly them outside.

We have continued reading Private Peaceful in class. We have practised our letter writing and focused on adventurous punctuation we could use.

We wrapped up our fraction unit this week by converting improper fractions into mixed numbers.

Ask your child for an example and let them show off their fraction skills!

Did you know that Generals were banned from going over the top of the trenches?

Students have been practising their shooting technique in hockey this week.

Students completed their exit pass in class which focused on reading and listening skills about topics that have been studied including countries, transport and holiday activities.

Christmas fridge dates came out this week. Students are reminded that Christmas cards should be put into the post boxes located around the school with student names and classes written on the front.

We have paid special attention to our core value of perseverance this week.

6R nearly had 100% attendance this week. At 99.2%, they were our big winners!

6R and 6S had two lates each this week. I wonder if any year 6 class can bring that number down to 0 next week.

Our class Christmas parties are on Monday. Make sure to bring in your holiday cheer and any food you would like to contribute!

We have Christmas home learning going home this week.

Please return it to your teacher during the first week of Term 3.

Classes completed their science write-up for their paper airplanes this week.

Results of the experiment were shared and discussed between partners.

Having read all of Private Peaceful, students put themselves in Tommo’s shoes and wrote a letter home describing the horrors of the trenches in WWI.

This week we have focused on ordering decimal numbers with digits in the tenths and hundredths columns.

Students have used place value headings and number lines to order decimals from smallest to greatest.

An unofficial truce took place on December 24, 1914, in the trenches around Ypres. It started with German soldiers putting decorations up around their trenches and singing Christmas carols, including Stille Nacht - Silent Night. The British soldiers responded

by singing O Come all ye Faithful.

Students continued to refine their hockey skills this week, playing a variety of different games and practising different drills.

This week, students were able to choose between different Christmas activities which helped them to review their colours.

We have had a busy week in the lead up to Christmas week! Students were able to share their learning at our open morning. They also had the opportunity to watch a Christmas film after school!

We have been recapping all of our core values this week.

Students continued to focus on their presentation skills through the creation of their posters that were based on their research into a famous person of their choice.
