Load-bearing precast concrete panels were specified to clad the

facade of the Condell Medical Centerin Libertyville, Illinois for severalreasons. By supporting their ownload, the panels reduced the slab loadand minimized interior columns, saving material costs on both the slabedging and interior. Also, designerswere unsure during which time of theyear the facade would be constructed.Using precast panels ensured that wecould do it in any weather. If you cangenerate repetition or have to build inwinter conditions, precast makesa lot of sense.

The original preliminary design scenario of metal deck and steeljoist for the AMC Theatre wasmodified to a precast frame employinga wide variety of precast components.By utilizing precast components madeunder controlled plant conditions, thisproject was able to be constructedduring harsh winter months, whichcould not have been achieved usingthe originally designed materials.

Further, the economic feasibility ofutilizing precast at the roof elevationwas not realized and therefore,Hollowcore Inc. included, under theirscope of work, the design, supply and

installation of the metal deck andjoist materials for the roof structure. This enabled Hollowcore Inc. toprovide the entire shell of thetheatre. This unique situationeliminated a lot of coordination andpotential conflicts that could havearisen by having multiple sub-trades on site simultaneously.
